lit·er·al·ly
/ˈlidərəlē,ˈlitrəlē/
adverb
in a literal manner or sense; exactly.
"the driver took it literally when asked to go straight across the traffic circle"
synonyms: verbatim, word for word, line for line, letter for letter, to the letter
INFORMAL
used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true.
"I was literally blown away by the response I got"
You’re either using the informal sense of the word or you’re lying. Either way, not a good look.
I'm struggling with this.bull·shit
/ˈbo͝olˌSHit/
vulgar slang
noun
noun: bullshit
1.
stupid or untrue talk or writing; nonsense.
verb
verb: bullshit; 3rd person present: bullshits; past tense: bullshitted; past participle: bullshitted; gerund or present participle: bullshitting
1.
talk nonsense to (someone), typically to be misleading or deceptive.
What part of the post is bullshit? Is it the quoting of the dictionary, the "either or statement," or G-Man's assessment of the latter?
From what I can tell, none of that can qualify as bullshit.
I mean, if I were a lie detector, which of those statements could I possibly check?

Re: Vanilla Mafia - Day 1
People are using the word "literally" to mean the exact opposite of what it means when we have plenty of other words in our vocabulary to serve as an intensifier. "Fucking" works well, I think.
And that's why it's a bad look. When people tell me their heads literally exploded, I look at them badly.

Re: Vanilla Mafia - Day 1
I agree with none of that.JaggedJimmyJay wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 10:17 pmI didn't say that anyone does that. I would rather argue about this than play Mafia frankly.
There is no need for a person to make a conscious decision at the moment of speech I am going to say "literally" in a context where it would not be accurate because I desire to add emphasis and levity to my commentary. Instead, it is a trend stemming from habit with origins in that purpose. I would wager that nearly everyone who uses the term incorrectly is well aware that the topic in question is not truly "literal" if pressed. To issue corrections is therefore a waste of everyone's time and serves no greater purpose. Yes, thank you for that, I don't give a shit, I said what I said, these commas are also incorrect, I don't give a shit about that either. "Could care less" is much the same phenomenon, and while that one drives me nuts, it's just as silly to cram corrections into a discussion when a proper interpretation was already achieved.
Linguistic precision is only useful in a world where communicators can interpret inflections, tones, and intentions.
Now, if the dialogue involves English as something other than a first language, then there's a purpose.
People who misuse words on a regular basis often cannot tell you what the word's literal meaning is. That's why they misuse words. If we want to throw "literally" into the trash can of slang, fine. It's in that bin that words often means the opposite of what they literally mean. Cool and hot can be synonymous in the trash bin of slang.
Not even James Joyce escapes my criticism:
My problem lies in people misusing words and being baffled that they were misunderstood. That's a big problem, and they often blame the other party for it, and in the worst scenarios, I've seen fights, simply because of linguistic ignorance. Hell, I've been accused of racism because I asked if anybody knew what "ignorant" meant, and someone said, "I don't know what that means, but I know it's something you do not call a black person." The irony.Lily, the caretaker's daughter, was literally run off her feet.
I can't tolerate that shit.
The danger in this should be apparent: If others can use words as they please and those who correct them are vilified, then the former remain ignorant, and have license to impose their definitions in other contexts.
Don't think this is a problem?
Read any English version of the Bible.

you have to judge someones character and make a read on them before they can be trustworthy or untrustworthy
If someone is not yet trustworthy, it means that person is not worthy of trust. Not trustworthy = Not worthy of trust = Untrustworthy
You cannot be neither trustworthy or untrustworthy. You will always be, by definition, one or the other.

If you go to the bank for a loan, and you have no credit history, the bank might tell you that you don't have creditworthiness.
"But I haven't done anything to have good or bad credit."
Correct. And for that reason, you lack creditworthiness in the eyes of the loan officer.

Re: Vanilla Mafia - Night 1
And MafiaMenace didn't even vote.
Hey new guys:
Vote for people. Civilians lose if civilians don't vote.

Re: Vanilla Mafia - Night 1
Could have been. Might have been. Was it a ploy?
Was there any serious Day 1 discussion I was fucking up? Did my linguistic debate really foil the civilian plan to thwart mafia right out of the gate?
Get out of the city.
Conspiring not to talk about reads? I didn't talk about them because I didn't have any.Sloonei wrote: ↑Sat Jan 12, 2019 2:03 am Then there was your general dismissiveness to my attempts to engage you afterwards. It seemed like you were, again, actively conspiring not to talk about reads. That’s something I consider to be bad. I could see you as a baddie trying to take advantage of the thread’s general lack of activity by throwing shade on a player or players who are trying to kickstart actual gameplay. I can see you doing that again in your response to my vote. You don’t seem to object to the vote itself, or at all concerned with my mindset when I made it. You’re just picking at the semantics of my post. I don’t think that’s what’s important about my post. If we’re going to talk about it, we should talk about why my “making things happen” statement is indicative of chocolate.
You asked me specifically about my JJJ vote.
I quoted myself: No reason.Epignosis wrote: ↑Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:22 pm
It was a place to put a vote.
Here I asked you a question and you gave my "answer" a thumbs down. I wasn't answering anything.
Then you called me chocolate ice cream or something.
You are bad. I would bet my spoon on it.
