Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day0]
Thank you.
I've played Mafia for over 10 years now, exclusively at HCRealms (where I've also run a few games here and there). Jack messaged me about the Mega Man game here, and since it's Mega Man (every realms avatar I've had since 2004 or so has been Mega Man-related), I figured I'd finally give a game here a try.
Syndicate games appear somewhat different from Realms games, but I don't think it will be anything too challenging to learn. I'm already familiar with the core rules. It's just learning the subtle nuances about how games are played here. And I recently played a game with several Syndicate members on the Realms where I saw just how radically different play styles can be.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 1]
I'll resist the urge to get into the technical definition of reploid (pings me a bit that it was used, but it's probably just an honest mistake).
Being completely frank, I have some gut feelings on a couple of players, but I admit that I am not familiar with most of the players here. There are a few standout interactions that are pinging me, though.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 1]
I meant in a pet peeve sense, with some slight legitimacy. At first I thought maybe there was some offhand mention about being reploids to the recruited robot masters, a simple mistake taking a term used only for Mega Man X series characters (Mega Man, which takes place before the X series, only refers to robot masters). The worst part about it is that none of the robot masters can technically be considered reploids, as it's a term referring to an android that is replicated as a human (Mega Man fits this description, as do Roll and Proto Man, but the term wasn't used until X came along).Kylemii wrote: ↑Sat Sep 22, 2018 10:03 amdo you mean ping in a legitimate sense or like in a pet peeve sense
reploids and mavericks seem like convenient words for defining good and bad robots in this game since the original games don't have any real provided terminology or plot (as far as I know?) and the definition at least loosely applies since reploids are defined by their free will and mavericks are defined by being robo-jerks
The reason I mostly shrug it off in the end is because Maverick would make more sense as villain nomenclature, but again, we're looking at an X term so even that wouldn't be expected to be used.
*really trying not to get bogged down into semantics this game, as that usually causes tunnel vision and leads to garbage plays on my end, but it's something to file in the back of my mind*

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 1]
My mafia background is strictly from HCRealms, meaning I know JackofHearts. I've played only one game with other players that are from here (sprityo, sloonei, and JaggedJimmyJay). My general playstyle is that I try to be helpful but usually just get in the way. I have difficulties trusting my own instincts and am susceptible to tunnel vision. I feel I'm a better moderator than a player.Kylemii wrote: ↑Sat Sep 22, 2018 2:28 pmfrom now on I will only refer to them as bad boy robots and good boy robots, to avoid any unnecessary confusionK-Ness wrote: ↑Sat Sep 22, 2018 2:10 pmI meant in a pet peeve sense, with some slight legitimacy. K-Ness, what is ur mafia background, who do you know already? how would you characterize your general play style? do you want to be friends?
I apologise if you already answered these

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 1]
The posts that seem to indicate not understanding how the game works (the recruitment). This is my first game here, so maybe I read the rules a bit more closely as to try to avoid something not allowed or that would make me feel stupid, but I knew that whoever got the role of Wily would be picking robot masters for their side.Jackofhearts2005 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 22, 2018 3:39 pm [mention]K-Ness[/mention]
You said earlier some things were pinging you. Tell us what those things are without fear. Please say exactly what is bothering you about those posts, even if it seems insignificant. Try to really drill down to a reason.
With the exception of a couple of roles, no one would know their alignment at the start. Anyone implying otherwise would stand out to me as not being a robot master.
Right now, my overall suspicions are with Jay, sloonei, and Long Con. Their posts stand out to me, but I'm wanting to make sure it's not just because I know of them from a past game.
It's about what I thought based on Pokemon Mafia. There's a lot of talking going on, which I'm not entirely used to. I'm trying to focus on who is actively contributing to meaningful discussion and who is just muddying the waters. While the high post count feels daunting, it's nothing that I can't deal with. I may need to go back to old tactics of keeping a handy notepad open to help keep my thoughts in one place (especially since I'm not familiar with most players here, so I've noted that I've been quickly forgetting who I have feelings on).
So far, I like the new experience and hope I can use it to try to actually become skilled at mafia.

Note to self: pay attention to the poll vote at the top of the page since voting doesn't take place in the thread.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Night 2]
To help maybe shed some light on the colors, in several of the Mega Man games, you collected letters to spell out things. Most notably, you would spell out Beat to gain him as a companion, but the letters here seem to indicate the spelling of "Mega Man V" in the game of the same name. Someone might have a role where they need to collect/reveal all of the letters we're seeing as orange, given that there's been two of them so far.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Night 2]
Day 1, Quin and Sloonei were probably the leading players pinging me hard. Jack, while giving me a town lean, has also been pinging me.
I find it really hard to believe that so many people wouldn't bother to read the rules.
Also, can I get an understanding as to why Elohcin was a viable lynch candidate?

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 3]
Jack's been referencing the recruitment part of the rules in a weird way, like he either didn't read the rules or is trying to bait people out (in a way, it feels like he's trying to be helpful without really adding anything). Additionally, there was the previous vote.
Needless to say, my intuition has always been bad, and I'm more of a late-game player anyway.

Those are just a couple of posts that give me cause to be suspicious. Yes, he references the mafia game on realms as his reason for being mixed up, but he also notes the use of outdated rules on the sign-up thread here. It's not an either/or for his reasoning, but his commentary still pings me. Also, the whole colin vote thing.
SLoonei is pinging me for similar reasons, mainly his focus on the lack of alignments during Day 0 and questioning how many baddies there are.

Wanting to know how many bad guys there would be when that answer was obvious from the rules thread. That was my first ping. The rest of the pings are how you're leading post count by a significant margin and yet going through your ISO reveals nothing of real value to me, just a bunch of talking (more like flailing). You've given me nothing to trust you at this point.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 3]
Feigning ignorance of the mafia count when it's explicitly stated can be a way to try to appear helpful while adding nothing of value to the discussion. Since we already know the number that we should be looking for, it begs the question why it would need to be asked at all.Sloonei wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 3:25 pmWhat is the motivation for a mafia member to feign ignorance and question the number of bad guys? I'll echo Quin's question when he faced the same criticism earlier: What is gained by that?K-Ness wrote: ↑Thu Sep 27, 2018 3:17 pmWanting to know how many bad guys there would be when that answer was obvious from the rules thread. Also your second criticism is something that I faced profusely in my most recent game on the Realms. "Just talking" is the name of the game for me. I talk about the game until I feel comfortable with it. Are there any specific questions you have for me that would help you to better understand my current position?
Do you have any additional reads to talk about?
Talking just for the sake of talking feels like clutter at best, obfuscation at worst. It makes it difficult to get an actual read on a player as one has to slug through a ton of irrelevant or nonsensical posts.

I appreciate that. I'm not used to relying so much on instinct. It makes me appreciate being able to ask people about their targets at night and threading together the facts. In this game, it's more about how the players are posting, which I've been trying to wrap my head around.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Night 3]
I've already explained that I'm too used to relying on night powers (reflected in the way I run my games since I tend to give players powerful roles, which makes balancing a pain in the butt). But fine. I'll put forth more of an effort to get my head in the game.Jackofhearts2005 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 28, 2018 10:20 amNah.
He’s doing what I was townreading him for not doing. That is, talking about being overwhelmed instead of pushing forward.
It’s fine to be overwhelmed moving from HCRealms to the Syndicate but to effectively town, moving past that stage is essential. Initial overwhelmed to effort ratios for Fredwood, CBob, Silver and Jack were all alignment indicative. That may be an unfair statement given the different player styles but I keep expecting Kness to start swimming and he hasn’t.
I had a read on sloonei not liking the way he was questioning the rules. I feel far more confident in his being town given the outcome on Lunalee.
Jack pinged me for similar reasons to sloonei, and he's one of the hardest players to read in a game. He also should be familiar enough with me as a mafia player to know when I'm scum, I do my best to slide by unnoticed. That means I tend to post as little as possible and just piggyback on people's hunches. His flopping opinion of me feels more like he's trying to set me up as an easy Day 4 lynch than a real assessment of my standings.
Quin was another early ping for me. Can't explain too much detail, just a vibe I was getting from the posts. Ditto for Bullzeye at this point.

Kyle was pretty vocal about wanting to know why people were voting for Luna. He was either erring on the side of caution or trying to find a way to help her wiggle out of it. Leaning neutral on him at the moment.Dyslexicon wrote: ↑Fri Sep 28, 2018 2:07 pmWhat do you make of the wagon on Luna and how it formed? Long Con gave no indication of his feelings towards Luna, only voting for her because he felt sloonei wasn't bad. He had the opportunity to push on sloonei if he wanted to try to bolster Luna's defenses and didn't take it. Makes me lean town on him. Especially when you factor in his mistake of thinking Elohcin was the first night kill. It's just a slip I don't see a mafia member making in the game.
Marmot feels off to me for some reason. Can't quite explain why.
Nutella is leaving me feeling pretty confident of towniness.
I have no opinion on Simon, so he's squarely in the neutral category for me at the moment. Though the post about how his mother was nightkilled meaning he can't be mafia is bogus for several reasons, one of which was explained in the Long Con summary.
Bullzeye's remark about someone being absent Day 2 was odd considering there wasn't a Day 2. But the overall feel from his ISO leaves me leaning town on him.
I've been enjoying reading your posts. There's something delightful about them, and the avatar is fabulous! The posts give me a town feel for you.

Considering the post was made after Luna was revealed, not at all. If you're cognizant enough to know you missed the day, you should at least be able to check who was lynched and the results there of. It sounds more like making a lame excuse for not being around and then trying to pepper it to make it seem more palatable.

Why does Luna feel the need to do that? If I’m bad and a train forms out of nowhere, I don’t jump on it regardless of it being a teammate or a townie.
But relatively new players might feel the need to be on a teammate’s wagon. If it was a townie, shouldn’t she stay off and let Nova get lynched? She doesn’t give a hoot about lynching any 1 of the 3 townies and the case on Nova was the weakest.
I could see this move as teammate indicative.

Please help a guy new to this site out. What exactly should I be able to do? I'm trying to get a feel for everyone here. I come from a place where claiming and powers are used to help figure things out, but here we can't claim, and powers don't seem to be as helpful in determining who is mafia (partly because we can't claim). I want to be helpful. I want us to win, but I don't know what I'm supposed to do other than read other peoples' posts to get a "feel" for them and then apparently post a lot of back and forth banter (which honestly seems like it just ends up being a tool used against players later on for lynches that either make so no sense or are just an angry mob looking to lash out).
Seriously, I'm struggling here.

I came from a site like that too. It took me a few games to get used to the new playstyle. More than once I messed up and semi-claimed or got myself lynched. My winrate (especially as scum) has gone up since then, and I'm getting to like the new playstyle more. It has to do more with analyzing motivations, player interactions, playstyles, and other such things instead of 'solving' the game with roles.
Less logic, more reads. Which are hard to do when you're new.
Just give us as many thoughts as possible regarding the posts made by other players. Don't worry if they don't make full sense or if you aren't confident. Act like you are. We'll use your contributions, keeping in mind that you're new, and try to figure out the rest.
As an aside, Marmot was on the chopping block and spoke very little to try to save himself. The only reason he wasn't lynched was because of Gemini Man tying up the lynch vote. On one hand, I think "It's mafia trying to save him." On the other, I think "That was a really risky gamble, as ties are likely determined at random." Also, this reveals what Gemini Man can do in a way, which doesn't seem like it would be smart for the mafia to reveal on a chance saving.
Also, if this place's mafia players are anything like on the realms, Mafia tend to beg moderators to replace low post/inactive players. We've only one replacement, and it wasn't the one I would have expected.

Who are the other replacements?DharmaHelper wrote: ↑Tue Oct 02, 2018 11:15 amWaitAlso, if this place's mafia players are anything like on the realms, Mafia tend to beg moderators to replace low post/inactive players. We've only one replacement, and it wasn't the one I would have expected.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 5]
Oh... and early replacement. Like, super early. And I just noticed the mod doesn't list replacements in the player list on the front page.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 5]
You just replaced Alien, which I knew because I read the opening of the day phase. Forgive me for forgetting Dyslexicon was also a replacement, since it was a rather long while ago.DharmaHelper wrote: ↑Tue Oct 02, 2018 11:20 amK-Ness wrote: ↑Tue Oct 02, 2018 11:19 amWho are the other replacements?DharmaHelper wrote: ↑Tue Oct 02, 2018 11:15 amWaitAlso, if this place's mafia players are anything like on the realms, Mafia tend to beg moderators to replace low post/inactive players. I'm still Town. *sigh*
Also, anyone even considering Gemini Man is Town needs to be looked at deeply. There is no way that Gemini Man is one of Light's.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 5]
Dharma, why would you suspect Marmot was town? What led you to think that he was after the previous phase?
*also noticed the subtitle is that this is still Day 5, which threw me for a moment*

No, but you had to have had some doubt in your mind that he was mafia, right?

Trying to figure out why he was discussing the reasoning for lynching Marmot, but whatever.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Day 6]
Not at all. I was trying to figure out why Dharma wasn't sure about Marmot given the previous day phase's antics. It felt more like looking for a reason to help Marmot wiggle out of a tough spot instead of an earnest attempt to gather information. If he had doubts on Marmot being mafia (therefore asking why we were lynching him), it would cement him as town, but I just don't buy that he working towards a greater good in his line of questioning.Jackofhearts2005 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 04, 2018 9:06 pm “some doubt in your mind that he was mafia, right?”
The mafia doesn’t have doubt that Marmot is mafia. If you actually had doubts, that would make you town.
So is Kness slipping?
He's also responding in a really annoying way, answering questions with questions.

With Dharma and Bullz going after Jack, that makes me less suspect of Jack.

Re: Mega Man Mafia [Night 6]
He doesn't. He's just being annoying for the sake of it. It's like those Hybridity games where after I was found out, I went ham on the entire town until they were finally able to off me. The only difference here being I doubt he has any real immunity.Jackofhearts2005 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:11 pmYou can’t possibly actually believe this.DharmaHelper wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:05 pm"Oh boy, people are suspicious of DH, I better jump on this mob so he'll leave me and my teammate K-Ness alone."Jackofhearts2005 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:03 pmRight? You do you, and I'll just decide where my vote goes when I can, I guess.
