Re: All Things NFL

Sloonei wrote: Sun Jul 12, 2020 11:43 pm Names like the Chiefs/Braves/Blackhawks do not bother me because they’re respectful, tasteful, celebrations of positive aspects of Native American iconography (if not also culture. Idk what the relationship is like between any of these franchises and the local Native American communities). “Redskins” is at best a distasteful informal term of mild mockery. At worst, it’s... much worse than that.

The Cleveland Indians are the real tricky one to me, and they’re apparently moving toward a name change as well. “Indian”, while a pretty ludicrous name for these particular people etymologically speaking, is not necessarily divisive today. But the franchise’s depiction and implementation of the imagery has historically been not-good, and the name as a sort of blunt and vague descriptor isn’t really drawing any positive inspiration from the source.
I can't speak for everyone, but I live in an area with a high Native American population (and I have Native American blood on both sides of my family). So many of them are Washington Redskins or KC Chiefs fans, but mostly Washington fans (including my uncle). My neighbor up the street is Native American and he has a huge Washington Redskins banner hanging over his garage (next to a Philadelphia Eagles banner- his wife's team of choice).

I'm sure there are Native Americans who don't like the name, but I can't think of ever meeting one in person who ever made that opinion known to me.

juliets wrote: Wed Sep 27, 2017 6:09 am I agree with both of you. The coverage needs to focus on what the original message was because I think thats been lost. And thats one reason I agree with Epi that it is not accomplishing anything.
I've had numerous conversations with others about this subject (including a huge Cowboys fan who used to idolize Jerry Jones until recently). Here is my full view:

"Disrespecting" the anthem or flag is going to

1) Piss off at least half of the people you (presumably) want to reach, and
2) Make the issue(s) about disrespecting the anthem or the flag.

I think a smarter protester would pick the battleground and realize this one isn't it.

The "taking a knee" movement is starting to balloon into a gesture that can be and has been assumed by anyone who holds a grievance. Colin Kaepernick sat originally to protest the US oppression "of black people and people of color," which in context was about controversial police interventions.

Now people are kneeling because of what Trump says on Twitter (and Trump wasn't President when Colin K. originally took a knee).

My point is that vague demonstrations such as this will only be blurred by being commandeered by others for their own reasons and grievances, it will become trendy, temporarily sensational, and eventually pointless.

Off topic, I work with Jadeveon Clowney's cousin.

Re: All Things NFL

I don't like the sudden death OT rules. Never have. I think you award a huge advantage to whichever team wins the coin toss.

And I didn't care for the halftime show, but that has more to do with my taste in musical performance.

Re: All Things NFL

The Panthers coaching staff wanted Cam Newton to refrain from running so much. In doing so, they removed one of their biggest weapons from play. It was, "It's 1st and 10? Let's have Jonathan Stewart run it up the middle."

Really bad offensive coordinating in this one.
