This game is based on a movie which is a prequel/spin-off/continuation of the TV show Twin Peaks. Yes, I know that's overly complicated. Twin Peaks is kind of the progenitor of serialized, mystery-based television (if you like LOST, The Leftovers, or any weird television show made in the last 25 years, you have Twin Peaks to thank), while also being utterly and bizarrely idiosyncratic. The original show is a mixture of police procedural, soap opera parody, and avant garde surrealism centered around the police (and FBI) investigation of the murder of Laura Palmer.

The movie that this game is based on, Fire Walk With Me, is essentially a deeply empathetic and surreal horror movie about Laura Palmer's last week alive, functioning as a prequel to the show. So, the movie can't really be fully understood without the show, but the movie's tone and style is so different from the show that a large chunk of fans were completely turned off. This all meant that when FWWM first hit theatres, almost everyone absolutely hated it. In recent years, though, the film has been re-evaluated and deemed the messy masterpiece I believe it to be. There's certainly a degree of difficulty in fully appreciating it. If not for INLAND EMPIRE, which is a three-hour-long movie with no plot filmed on shitty camcorders, it'd be director David Lynch's least accessible film. But for those willing to put in the time and effort, it's really quite rewarding. Sheryl Lee, who did nothing before this, and not much else after, gives one of my favorite performances in anything ever, and the Byzantine mythos about the various interdimesional beings is endlessly fascinating to me.

Also, David Bowie is in one scene and it's possibly the most goddamn insane scene in movie history. Seriously, if nothing else, watch this shit:

Unfortunately, I might have to resort to begging you to join just so I can have a single person who has actually seen Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and can appreciate all the sick-ass references. Otherwise, it'll just be extensive theming apropos of nothing.

Plus, this is a spin-off movie from a TV show, so I can't tell people to just watch the movie to understand all the uber-bizarre shit. Instead I've gotta implore them to watch the Twin Peaks television show (ideally just season 1 and the Lynch-directed episodes of season 2) first in order to get them to watch a movie that gleefully goes against the show in spectacular, rawly empathetic fashion.

For those of you who have not seen Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, (i.e. everyone except me, Rico, [mention]a2thezebra[/mention] (where did she go, anyway?), and maybe [mention]Dyslexicon[/mention]) I have to warn you not to look up the plot summary of the movie, as it will completely spoil not only the movie, but also Twin Peaks the television show.

I have heard reports that it does actually make some sense to people who haven't seen the show, so a person could theoretically watch the movie first, so I guess that's an option for people wondering why I'm babbling on about interdimensional beings, incest, David Bowie, and paintings of doorways.

Totally understand. I'm forcing myself to be a replacement in the LC/BR game for similar reasons, despite how kickass it looks.

I would like to stress how quick this game is going to be. It'll take a grand total of fifteen days from start to finish, so it's not a huge time investment.

The telegram was mostly gibberish, but it did mention a "Theresa Banks," and how she'd be found in a town named "Deer Meadow."
