He only shows up in irc about once every 6 months if that often. Last time he did he said he was very busy between his graduate degree and working. He seems to have moved on from mafia. What is being called "role madness" here is something that has been the practice at LP mafia, the Piano and Revolution mafia even prior to the Syndicate. I played mafia for years on those sites without ever knowing there could be a such thing as a "vanilla" role. When I first encountered vanilla roles in fact I thought "ew, what is this?". "Role madness" is par for the course in my experience.
