Re: All Things NFL
There is a fairly new (Feb. 2020) poll out from UC Berkely and the University of Michigan that disputes The Washington Post poll from 2016 which said that relatively few Native Americans take offense to the name. The new poll is described in the attached article but its bottom line was over half of 1000 Native Americans surveyed take offense to the name and other caricatures (tomahawk chop of the KS Chiefs for example) of their culture. Here is the article:Epignosis wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 4:50 pmI can't speak for everyone, but I live in an area with a high Native American population (and I have Native American blood on both sides of my family). So many of them are Washington Redskins or KC Chiefs fans, but mostly Washington fans (including my uncle). My neighbor up the street is Native American and he has a huge Washington Redskins banner hanging over his garage (next to a Philadelphia Eagles banner- his wife's team of choice).Sloonei wrote: ↑Sun Jul 12, 2020 11:43 pm Names like the Chiefs/Braves/Blackhawks do not bother me because they’re respectful, tasteful, celebrations of positive aspects of Native American iconography (if not also culture. Idk what the relationship is like between any of these franchises and the local Native American communities). “Redskins” is at best a distasteful informal term of mild mockery. At worst, it’s... much worse than that.
The Cleveland Indians are the real tricky one to me, and they’re apparently moving toward a name change as well. “Indian”, while a pretty ludicrous name for these particular people etymologically speaking, is not necessarily divisive today. But the franchise’s depiction and implementation of the imagery has historically been not-good, and the name as a sort of blunt and vague descriptor isn’t really drawing any positive inspiration from the source.
I'm sure there are Native Americans who don't like the name, but I can't think of ever meeting one in person who ever made that opinion known to me.

And one more thing to celebrate in Tampa - Rob Gronkowski! Sure hope we have a season even if we're all watching from home.

Don't tell that to our fans in Tampa -JaggedJimmyJay wrote: ↑Tue Mar 24, 2020 8:06 am My interest in the entire league is lessened at the moment. I think there's a very real chance there won't even be a 2020 NFL season. Fans in the stands are almost definitely out.

And now the game is exciting. Also I didn't mind a little lip synching because of the dancing. But where was Pit Bull...?

Re: All Things NFL
Mahomes is a thrill to watch I agree but I'm a John Lynch fan girl - totally great guy, he was a hero when he played here - so I'm torn. Maybe I won't pick a team and just watch it hoping for a good game.

Re: All Things NFL
Yes, I may have said this already but my feeling this last weekend was they were protesting Trump, not racial injustice. Did the Green Bay fans link arms last night? I heard the team asked them to but there was a lot of resistance.

I agree with both of you. The coverage needs to focus on what the original message was because I think thats been lost. And thats one reason I agree with Epi that it is not accomplishing anything.

Re: All Things NFL
So...whats everyone's opinion about the flag controversy? I stand on the side that says people have a right to protest but my fb is blowing up with people saying they are going to boycott the NFL (like my aunt who I'm sure has never watched an NFL game in her life), or one meme showing a picture of Tebow saying liberals protested when he prayed on the field but they don't care that people won't stand up for their nation. People are really rabid about this. Personally, I'm more wondering how we're going to stave off a nuclear war with Korea and save Puerto Rico from starving and dying from disease. Oh, and health care.

Re: All Things NFL
I also think the U2 half-time show after 9/11 was the best one I've ever seen. I watched it again just to remember it recently.G-Man wrote:Good defensive first quarter. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were pretty meh from a competitive standpoint. Fourth quarter comeback was wild but overtime was disappointing because Atlanta barely put up a fight. They didn't just roll over and die but it was close enough to that. If not for the comeback, the game would have been a dud.MovingPictures07 wrote:So I didn't end up watching it (shocker, right?), but the hubbub is all over the internet. How would you all rank this Super Bowl in terms of enjoyment and/or excitement compared to past outings?
The halftime show was very good. Gaga toned down her antics a bit but still put on a heck of a show. For me, the best halftime show will always be U2 and the 9/11 victims tribute in 2002 but this could land pretty high when I finally get around to watching more of the past halftime shows again on YouTube. Lady Gaga isn't normally my cup of tea and she certainly had some bizarre in her performance but she sang live (and well) and worked hard to put on a good show. I think it highlights how much better the halftime show can be when it's just one performer instead of a headline act and a few guest performers.
Honestly, the most unexpected and noteworthy thing that happened for me was an Amber Alert for Central Pennsylvania cutting off much of the post-halftime show banter between the analysts. Thankfully though the Amber Alert was a false alarm. I checked our local news this morning. Turns out a little girl crawled into her mother's car during the first half of the Super Bowl. The mother forgot to put the car in park, so the child's added weight caused the car to roll back out of the driveway and down into some woods across the street. The mom thought the car and the kid were stolen but they found the car and the kid around midnight. Not exactly mother of the year material but at least the kid was okay.

Re: All Things NFL
I thought it was a totally boring game. Guess that's what happens when it's almost all defense. I'm glad Peyton got that last? win even though i was rooting for Carolina.
