Re: Death Note Mafia [END]

Good question, Rico! I had one planned for the day that MM called you out to suicide. I ended up incorporating part of it until the actual post for that day, but my first draft went something like this:

Day 9: Ricochet's Last Words

The players debated lynching FZ. Again.

METALMARSH89: (reflection) This is so boring. I wish I had an apple to eat. I love apples.

The players kept debating lynching FZ. Metalmarsh89 couldn't take it anymore.

METALMARSH89: MIKAMI! You know who you are, and I know who you are. Your time has come. You learned something valuable yesterday, and it would be quite the boon to Master Light for you to play your part now.

The players stared at Metalmarsh89 in amazement.

METALMARSH89: How's that, DH?

BANG!!!

Suddenly, Ricochet fell to the ground, blood pouring all over the floor.

FZ.: What the hell?!?! He just shot himself in the head?! Why??
TURNIP HEAD: This is not good...

Ricochet has committed suicide. He was Teru Mikami (X Kira).

It is now Night 9.

You have 24 hours to send in your night actions.

Anyway, I always believed, considering his abilities, that Mello would have a better shot at ending the game than Near - which is an ironic twist on the canon.
Indeed. And yep, that is true, Mello was definitely the more dangerous one in this game.

Yes! I'm so glad you brought this up. Can't believe I forgot about it.

In the event that Near found the active Kira but that the conditions for detective win were not meant, here is the formula that would have decided whether detectives or Light and crew won:

Win / Lose = [Number of Living Detectives x 1.05] - [Number of Living Kiras x 1.45]

If the number was positive, detectives would have won. If it was negative, Light and co.

That's gotta be some sort of goddamn record. Easy to talk a lot when you can't be killed and you have to be lynched to win :P
Indeed. It is definitely a record on The Syndicate. I would venture to say it's a record total... but I'm not sure.

I am pretty sure the original Recruitment Mafia by LC and BR had 9,000 and some change posts on The Piano, and I am also pretty sure that it's the longest mafia game since I've started playing (mid-2010), if not before then.
I thought we broke 10 or it was close. I don't think it's record was ever broken on TP though. We had 40+ players to start. The good ol' days when that was possible. Maybe we can get up near 40 for Recruitment 4.
You may be right, I couldn't remember if it ended up breaking 10,000 or not. And I'm pretty sure it never got broken on TP or elsewhere, but I'm not positive. Indeed, that'd be fantastic, and I think we can do it. :noble:

No problem. I was a civ during one of my family deaths, and mafia during the other 2. It was equally hard and frustrating to deal with ppl's posts no matter which alignment I was. The only real difference is when you're bad, you are also letting down teammates so there is extra pressure to try and defend yourself. I reached a point once where I wanted to say 'fuck it, just lynch me' but I don't know if I said it or not. :p probably did.

Once again, thank you MP, this game was so much fun to play, even if it took me half-way through to even begin to understand it.
I understand as well. My grandma died at the beginning of Spacedaisy's Homestar Runner game, and it completely affected the way I played that game, especially since I was under constant suspicion in a way very similar to FZ. was that game. It was a huge rollercoaster of emotions, that's for sure.

And no problem. I'm really glad you and so many others enjoyed it, even though I know it was a taxing experience for us all. Haha. And you performed excellently; I was so insanely happy to have you, boo, and Aces in it for your comeback games.

Re: Death Note Mafia [END]

I think that's a very good approach to RL situations. It's a tough call, as either a civilian or a baddie, because it's inevitable that RL will affect your mafia behavior in so many ways, but especially more in especially crazy RL situations. Nonetheless, I think the approach you outlined there, TH, is a good one.

Re: Death Note Mafia [END]

Wow, Rico, that's outstanding analysis, especially the .pdf representing the spreadsheet where you summarized what everyone said up until D9. That's truly amazing. I can totally see why you'd need to take a break, especially since you have pulled off some crazy baddie wins... and with how intense this game was. :P

FZ., I'm really glad you never gave up, and you kept fighting regardless. I felt SO BAD for you, though, especially since I know you weren't finding your footing amid all the crazy mechanics and that's why people were finding you bad... and if you did get lynched, you would have survived, and people would likely think you were still bad. It was a vicious cycle. But I'm glad you kept playing and enjoyed it in the end.

I appreciate the comments and feedback, guys, I really do. Thank you so much for not only playing up to the level of intensity that my game design required but for taking it in stride and offering me the feedback about your experience thereafter.

My Naruto game that I'll be submitting into the next queue and hosting with Bass_the_Clever will sort of be a brain twin sequel to this game, although the mechanics will work very differently inevitably, and the game structure will inevitably be different, and the themes are different (but both are anime). The biggest difference is that every civilian will have multiple night actions that they can perform every night. That said, a few of the ways that mechanics worked out here will inevitably influence some similar mechanics and thus how Bass and I run that game, so I really appreciate the commentary, and I do apologize for the frustration this game not only for detectives but all around. I knew the unlynchable aspects could create a really frustrating environment this game, especially for civilians, so I tried to take that in mind when I crafted the game structure and stuck with it anyway because I felt I could balance it out through mechanics. In the end, I took the risk of staying more representative of theme and more unconventional, which I will admit took some creative thinking from all parties in approaching the game (seeing Daisy and her group, as well as TH and DH, BTS constantly coming up with their schemes was truly something else).

Well look at that dodge of a bullet.

What I still don't get is that his secrets were revealed Day 5, I think and he got killed Day 6. How did he get so many extra checks in this short interval?
The 9th check was due to his secret secrets. The 48-hour intervals started immediately (hence why he didn't post Day 0). I could go back and double check the exact time frames, but I'm a bit too tired to do that tonight, so if Russ doesn't do that and you folks are interested, I'll take a look at it tomorrow and get back to you.

Re: Death Note Mafia [END]

It's interesting to note that Llama almost received the most votes on Day 2, which could have altered the game significantly.

Here is the post I had ready in case he did get "lynched":

-------------------------------------------------------------

Day 2: Boomslang's Plan B

THELLAMA73: Seriously?!? Why can't anyone understand that I'm doing my best to catch Kira?!! Anyone with a brain can see that. Look at Snowman! He's done NOTHING!

Snowman quietly chuckles as Sockface begins writing down thellama73's name in the Lynch Note.

Meanwhile, Boomslang had slipped away from the crowd, with a clear agenda in mind. He had taken his sniper rifle and waited for the perfect moment...

BANG!

SOCKFACE: Ouch!!!!!!

Sockface shook his right hand in pain. Players gasped. Many of them turned around to see... nothing.

Boomslang had rushed steathily right next to Sockface, catching his pen right before it hit the ground. He held his rifle to Sockface's head.

BOOMSLANG: Hand me the Lynch Note. Now.

The players, frozen, watched in awe. Sockface grinned, handing over the note. Boomslang started writing down a name in the notebook. None of the players could say a word, as they were too fearful and shocked.

Boomslang handed the notebook back to Sockface.

BOOMSLANG: It is done.

Forty seconds later, Boomslang collapsed, dying of a heart attack.

Boomslang has been lynched. He was Watari.

It is now Day 3.

You have 48 hours to catch and find Kira (again).

-------------------------------------------------------------

But then BWT received momentum out of nowhere and I had to come up with a new post... and I never got to use this one.

Re: Death Note Mafia [END]

Mechanics of the DN:

Your kills work typically (you send in the name of the player you want to kill) and you may elect to kill nightly.

With that said, there are added dimensions to your killing which you are free to use to your advantage. You may control the time of death, as well as conditions triggering death, for each of your victims. However, the soonest that your kill can occur is typical (that night). The latest it can occur is as long as you wish. So, for example, there are three broad routes you can take with your kill:

1) Standard - Player dies at end of night - ex) It's Night 3. You say "I want to kill MP" and the N3 post says "MP has been killed by Kira", assuming your kill is successful.
2) Delayed time - Player dies at different time specified by you - ex) It's Night 3. You say "I want to kill MP" and add that you want him to die at the end of D5. Then the N3 post will say "No one has been killed" and instead I will create a post at the end of D5 with "MP has been killed by Kira"
3) Conditional - Player dies at specified trigger event - ex) It's Night 3. You say "I want to kill MP" and add that you want him to die when he votes for Dom. Then the N3 post will say "No one has been killed" and instead whenever MP votes for DoM I will kill him instantaneously and say "MP has been killed by Kira"

Now, a caveat regarding the options 2 and 3. Obviously, RL takes precedent, and although I do have a very flexible schedule I do keep pretty busy. So, you may ask me ahead of time if you are considering an option (though this is impossible to predict for option 3, and applies to option 2), and I can give you an idea if I may be available at that time. Regardless, these options may receive a delayed post, but I promise I will make them as absolutely instantaneous and timely as I can.

You should note that just because you may be killing using option 2 or 3 instead of 1, if your kill was going to fail due to whatever reason, it still will fail, even if the reason for it failing was N3 and your kill is taking place later.

In addition, in my host post killing your target, you may "control the victim's actions before death", so you may request a certain content to the host post. I am willing to work with and negotiate with you on this matter if you are willing to take advantage of it, but you do not have to.

So did you really think fz was light or what was the deal there? I was so convinced you knew who I was from early on.
All right, here goes:

First, I don't believe I have *ever* seen you lynched. You're like juliets in that respect for me: Someone who just never gets lynched (I got juliets lynched one time though, I'm proud to say, even though I was wrong about her :p ).

Therefore, I knew going after you was going to be impossible, especially since you were posting so seldom. You had what, 50 posts in this game?

So I gave up pursuing you.

However, FZ. fit the criteria of a bad guy (88%, if you'll recall). While I'm at it: Russ you ass, why did you vote FZ.? :noble:

I pushed it hard. Then she outed herself as unlynchable.

At that point, I decided pressing her was win-win-win for me. If she was Light or Misa, super. If she wasn't, I had someone to go after until Higuchi got his death note. If she was Near, maybe she would get Night killed.
I was wondering about this too. Makes sense.

I was really intrigued to see the mafia game within the mafia game that was Yotsuba. At some point, I thought maybe I shouldn't have made Higuchi unkillable before he had his DN, but I didn't want both Higuchi and Mikami being killed by Kira or lynched early on, since that would have given Light very little protection.

Then Bass started coming under a TON of heat and, right on time, he received the DN. I thought for sure he was going to lose, but then Daisy got TH lynched instead. Lol.

Mata -- gained DN Day 3 -- relinquished DN Day 8
Sidoh -- gained DN Day 4
Rem -- relinquished DN Day 10
Bass -- gained 2DN Day 10 -- relinquished 2DN Day 12

I have to admit, I loved the tension between Ryuk and Sidoh, that was awesome. Especially since Sidoh clearly had incentive to align himself with the detectives (and he certainly did!).

Oh yeah, that was the funniest thing ever. :)

I asked Eloh what role she was in chat, and she immediately outed herself. Then she asked me who I was and I was like "Um, you just role claimed a Kira sympathizer. I'm not telling you." That's when she realized L was not the same role as Light. :haha:

She was so pissed off.
:haha:

This was the funniest thing all game. I wish I had saved the dialogue.

And it's why I "allowed" the role outing of Elo by L without him saying exactly what her role was... because her outing to L was essentially the same as if Elo had outed herself in thread. XD

Also Dharma what was that gibberish that epi kept saying was Henry V, Act 2.
Some monologue I found from Henry V Act 2 that I just ran through an encoder.
LOL, what was that about, by the way?

Spacedaisy wrote:DH, maybe you couldn't use your powers but I couldn't kill you with L alive either. And I didn't know it until TH chose to reveal it.

Frankly if so much time had not been wasted on yotsuba lunches and lynching people who were clearly unlynchable, the game may have been drastically different. Plus I didn't know who my team even was, I had a good chance of killing my own teammates. Mikami was important, andI didn't discover him until late in the game. We constantly had to balance our kills trying to decide who might be mikami.

Linki @Llama, I had so much fun in chat with you, especially since it was longer than expected. And I already had you figured out before you told me. Also, my gut had told me for a while that DH was mello and you were L, but for some reason I doubted myself. Then it became clear to me later I was right.
And...

TH never chose to reveal Mello/Near's secrets.

Right MP? :P
Ha, indeed. I figured that would happen once both of you were working on the additional secrets, and I knew that Kira and his team were working hard to get rid of Mello and Near before L... It was so hard not to say anything!

Re: Death Note Mafia [END]

Epi, duly noted. I didn't mean to come across as defensive; I appreciate the feedback from you and everyone else, constructive criticism and otherwise. And yeah, I know, boo won :P , but I didn't intend on that when I wrote the roles. I decided to give him an exception on a specific basis.

zeek, and everyone else, I understand both the frustration associated with failed lynches as well as the insane amount of detail that went into the game (and how it was unconventional). Both were risks I took with the game design, so I understand that frustration could be a byproduct of it. I considered many, many different angles to this game, but in the end, decided on what you saw unfold here, and I'm sure it wasn't perfect. But I certainly had a lot of fun. :feb: And I'm glad that many of you did too. :)

I certainly don't intend on reusing many of the mechanics employed this game again, since they were really manifestations of the theme.

Llama, you have to tell everyone about what happened with Elo. :haha:

I think MP did a great job capturing the essence of the show in this game. My only regret is that I didn't last long enough to fully use my role.

P.S Who killed me?
Spacedaisy did, I think because she thought you were a detective. She can confirm (or deny) that.

Re: Death Note Mafia [END]

Epignosis wrote:MP: "Me against my brother, my brother and I against my cousin, and all of us against the stranger."

Most Kira group needed the detectives dead to win. My assertion was that the detectives were not going to win. Ryuk might as well want to kill detectives with Light. That's just my view though. I wasn't a detective (and never pretended to be one), so someone else might think differently.
But the fact that the Sympathizers went all game with so many events working in their favor, as well as the fact that boo sacrificed his own win con, among other factors, but most importantly the fact that the detectives could have won in the final hour convinces me otherwise. But you're entitled to your opinion. I just finally feel I came up with the most balance game I ever have, and I had my doubts before the game ran, and even while it was running, but the way it progressed and ended convinced me that the integrity was upheld.
