Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - GAME OVER

Long Con wrote:    Wow, okay. I guess it really is just a pipe dream that people would just read my posts and understand what I am saying in them, and analyze the correctness of the intended communication. That is so frustrating, I didn't think my communications were so complex.
It's not that readers may not understand what you're posting, it's really a matter of whether or not they believe you're telling the truth. For example, going with Drumbeats' sortie plan made you uneasy, because he could have been manipulating everything to come out for his good and our bad (our = civs). As you know, the same thing could have been true about what you were saying in the thread. (As it turned out, his plan was solid, truthful and without malice, yet it's impossible to know that during game play.) So just like Drumbeats' plan, what you are communicating may also be a manipulation designed to come out for your good and our bad.

I can hear you are extremely frustrated, and I appreciate that. I am also extremely frustrated with what happened to me in the game. So I'm not saying what I'm saying to make your frustration seem wrong or out of place, because I don't think it is wrong or out of place, my goal here is just to explain where my head is at in a mafia game, and where I think other peoples' (or other civs') heads may be at in a game context.

You happened to be telling the truth, at the same time, since no one can read your mind, no one knew this. I have not seen in recent memory a role design where it automatically dies at a certain point in the game. So that role mechanic would not have even entered my mind, no matter how much you were indirectly or directly hinting at it, I just never would have come up with that idea unless and until it was 100% spelled out for me. (In fact, I have to say that I really respect the fact that you went ahead and played your role, knowing you wouldn't last long from the get go.) It's just that no one else knew that, and couldn't take what you said at face value... because, well, mafia. There are lots of unknowns when you're civ. You yourself even said you were as surprised as anybody that Cain flipped "civ". So I think many other civs felt the same way, and since we didn't know you'd self-destruct, you were taken out just in case, to make our win cons easier.

Does that make sense and help at all? :hugs:

I agree with this, Glorf. I enjoyed watching you play, and I enjoyed your posts. I hope you'll stick around, sometimes things can get heated and people can get a bit worked up in a game, but someone with your ability to remain polite and dispassionate while playing will be a big asset round these parts!!!

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - GAME OVER

Interesting!

So it was in my role pm. I must have overlooked it? :haha: How sad. Of course, I wouldn't have used it (more than likely) so quickly in the game anyway.

I was wondering about attacks on the Galactica. Cool!! Glad that didn't have to happen.

Also, 1 of the laws that I submitted to be put in the pool of laws was The Patriot Act - where any player could offer themselves to die in place of Kat or Hot Dog on a sortie mission during any day. Since the sorties didn't last the whole game (thank goodness!) it wouldn't have worked out, but it still seemed like a good idea.

Did any other presidents submit any other laws of their own?

Also, I know I won the very first contest (couldn't use the prize tho), who won the other contests? Did Bea ever use her Sam power to win or get a duplicate award?

~Linki~ I also passed the Ika Conscription Act the first night. Poor ika.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - GAME OVER

As I said I was really disappointed. I had been sooooo excited about this game for months for a variety of reasons, it was hard to barely get started, and then be out and have to watch from the sidelines. This was probably my favorite game I've ever seen or played in, due to topic and game design/execution (and I knew that would likely be the case as soon as I signed up for it).

Thanks again Golden, this was beyond epic! :noble: I will say again - I will definitely watch for your games in the future, this one was phenomenal! :nicenod: I liked how the momentum kept changing, and things kept seeming to get flipped around.

Rico, one of my Wills was getting planned out just to be a pep talk for you when you were getting frustrated. I really felt for you, because I imagined how I might have felt if I were still playing. I ended up needing my 25 words for something else, but I was definitely sending you good vibes! I think it happens to all civs - uninformed majority can be a hard row to hoe.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - GAME OVER

It was killing me how as soon as I was gone, the sorties fell apart. :fist: But then Dex subbed in, and got them going again, and I felt much better. I was literally cheering from the sidelines seeing them going again. Once that mission was finally over, I felt like we (including myself for some strange reason - deadie) could finally gain some traction. That was probably one of the luckiest strikes of the game!

And I really wanted to say RIP Juliets. I almost used one of my Wills to say that, but ended up running out of words. :pout: So, RIP Juliets, you were 100% willing to go through with all the sorties, knowing what the outcome might be for you. That's awesome!

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - GAME OVER

All this talk makes me even sadder I didn't get to play the game longer. :puppy:

Golden, those prophecies were great! They would have been really helpful!

Also, (I think) sig - thanks for passing that Wills of the Dead Act. It was awesome to be able to participate, even if it was only 25 words every 72 hours or so!!!

When I was passing laws, I basically chose all the laws I thought would actually affect the game the most. I got the Haiku act, one about giving compliments, and a couple other ones that were kind of "silly", so each time (all 2 of them lol) I just picked whichever law I thought would have the most impact on game play. I looked at it from a host point of view... and as a host I like to impact game play. That was an awesome role power! But it looks like the 2 airlocks were taken away from my role power before I got the role. Bummer, I would have loved to shove a couple people out an airlock. :dark:

I also finally figured out JJJ was The Admiral, after the admiral started asking people to get more involved and all that. Total 3J - Your mascot status remains fully intact, my friend!

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day 12

Also, oops - my Will was incorrect! Scotty = Apollo, not Marmot. :puppy: I mistakenly assumed the Will that outed me as Roslin came from Marmot... when it obviously actually came from Scotty! Thanks Scotty! I really wasn't sure what to do with that first Will, but then you kind of paved the way showing what kind of useful info could be shared. I'm not sure anyone actually read them or paid attention to them, but that's another matter altogether. :haha:

Also, HELLS yeah on those Rezz Ships!! That is bad ass, especially now to find out that each ship WAS tied to a specific Cylon. Very interesting!

Also, also (see how much I've been holding in since my death???? it was actual torture following along and not being able to post!!!) Golden, this game was AWESOME! As I told you in PM, there wasn't a part of it that didn't seem absolutely polished and well thought-out. I'm sorry I got taken out so early, I would have loved to continue playing it! Thanks for an awesome game about one of my favorite shows! And I really was so very pleased to be Roslin, one of my favorite characters from the series. Thanks, thanks, thanks!!!

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day 12

Also - sorry to those who did not like the Cylon Amensty Act. After my win conditions changed from "All Cylons must be dead" to "Cavil Faction Cylons must be dead" (due to something I said in the thread), I thought that law might help some other human/civs get similar win cons. And it seems a lot easier to only have to kill a few cylons rather than all the cylons. It was interesting to watch it play out (without being able to involve myself)... my intention was to engage in some discussion after passing that law. Sorry for those who didn't like it, I thought it had a pretty good impact on the game... but easy to say from the sidelines.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day 12

Wow, AWESOME!!! I am sorry I died and can't enjoy the well-earned civ victory here.

The night the Wills of the Dead law got repealed I had an awesome will to share... basically outing the Cavil team as I understood it (and happened to be right)... but then I couldn't post it. :pout:

Golden, will you be posting what happened with Night Actions, etc? I know you had said my death was a run of MAJORLY bad luck... which now seems super sad because if ika hadn't been NKed straight away, I might still have been in the game. But I'm super curious to see what other bad luck passed my way.

I've been NKed early as a civ in both games I've played recently. This one hurt more because of how much I LOOOOVED this show, and because of how much I REALLYYYYYYY wanted to play this game, and was really enjoying it. But, I'll take it as a compliment anyway... even though it sucked. I was seriously so disappointed to be out so early, especially when so many people who never even watched the show were still playing. Anyway, I still followed the game every single day, and read every single post.

[secret role] Might be human. Might be cylon. Might be stationed on Galactica. Might not. Who really knows.
Is there anything we can derive from looking at the role list this way? Lore people- can you tell us about any factions or interplay between these two groups that Golden the Coward ;) might have brought over into the game?
Here it is.

As far as the humans go, the lists make perfect sense. Since there was a fleet, and certain people were on different ships. So I haven't analyzed each human on the Galactica and each human elsewhere, but in general that makes sense.

Beyond that, here is what I've found on each of the cylons, relating to their currently assigned locations. (Yes, this contains spoilers, read at your own risk if you haven't watched the show and want to watch it still.)

On Galactica
Spoiler: show
Cavil - One of the Number Ones, prior to being discovered among the Fleet, posed as Brother Cavil, a member of the Colonial clergy. However, contrary to his assumed role, he did not share the other Cylons' religious beliefs and frequently mocked them.

Doral - "Number Five", known to the humans as Aaron Doral, appears to be a man in his mid-thirties. He is initially encountered aboard Galactica, where he is operating as a public relations executive. Later he is active both within the fleeing Colonial fleet and on Caprica. He seems designed to network, almost to the point of being the sleazy used-car salesman type, but with a sadistic, violent side.

But Doral is a humanoid Cylon in reality. The Doral model's purpose is to attempt to sow the seeds of discontent or confusion, particularly during crucial life-threatening situations. Doral models endeavor to undermine authority that threatens his objectives. Doral models are more covert than the dazzling Sixes, assuming an ordinary "everyman" appearance blended in what may seem to be insignificant behind-the-scenes issues (such as converting Galactica into a museum).

Boomer - Sharon "Boomer" Valerii is a copy of the humanoid Cylon model Number Eight who is initially planted as a "sleeper" agent in the Colonial Fleet. She is unaware of her Cylon nature and serves for two years as Lieutenant Valerii on Galactica, where she is assigned as a Raptor pilot and also engaged in a secret relationship with Chief Tyrol. After the Cylon attack, her underlying programming repeatedly emerges which leads her to unconscious acts of sabotage. Growing confusion about her true self result in a deep depression and a failed suicide attempt. After Valerii returns from a successful mission to destroy a Cylon basestar, she shoots Commander William Adama in the chest, wounding him critically. She is incarcerated in the brig and soon afterward is killed by Cally Henderson.

Athena - The Cylon who eventually comes to be known as Sharon "Athena" Agathon is a Number Eight humanoid Cylon copy.

She is first encountered by Karl "Helo" Agathon when he is stranded on Caprica. Initially assigned to seduce him by impersonating Lieutenant Sharon "Boomer" Valerii, as part of a Cylon cross-breeding experiment, she turns against her people and helps him escape the planet. Pregnant with Helo's child, Helo is shocked by her true nature but ultimately accepts her lovingly as the mother of his child.

Once on Galactica, she is imprisoned and long seen as a mere object.

Not aboard:
Spoiler: show
Leoben - Number Two is first encountered at the Ragnar Anchorage, where he poses as an arms dealer and calls himself Leoben Conoy. It is likely that he was assigned with the monitoring of this depot station as the war began, gaining intelligence on battlestars that visited there. Alternatively, he may have been tasked with stealing away or destroying the ammunition (or the station itself) to prevent its use by the Colonials.

D'Anna - "Number Three" is a model of humanoid Cylon, female, blonde, and marked by a religious curiosity—notably surrounding the verboten Final Five—that sets her against the other Cylon models, notably the Number Ones.

The model was first introduced in "Final Cut" as an infiltrator in the Fleet under the alias "D'Anna Biers" posing as a reporter for the Fleet News Service. She appears to be more of a tabloid rumor-and-innuendo format news journalist and less of the conventional Fleet journalist types such as James McManus.

O'Neill - "Number Four", also referred to by his human name Simon O'Neill, is a humanoid Cylon that speaks calmly and purposefully, and tends to use logic as a means for his operation or resolving issues (TRS: "Torn"), and is not as religious as his counterparts.[2] This model appears to be the medical specialist of the Cylons and also takes on the role of a doctor or medic when functioning as an infiltrator (TRS: "The Farm", "Six of One", "The Plan"). Apparently the infiltrators of this type are more likely to use their medical skills subversively than to engage in direct combat.

A Four captured on an infected basestar near the Lion's Head Nebula is interrogated on Galactica. He reveals information about the ship and the Cylons' motives for abandoning it, in exchange for a cure promised by the humans. However, there is no cure, only a treatment.

Caprica Six - For two years, Caprica-Six lived on Caprica. Seducing the ambitious, self-obsessed, arrogant Gaius Baltar, she fools him into believing she was a corporate spy, seeking to gain advantage over her competitors in order to secure a lucrative defense contract. Over the course of two years, she used Baltar to gain access to his work -- even to the extent of re-writing many of his own algorithms -- in order to subvert his own Command Navigation Program for use in the forthcoming Cylon attack to cripple Colonial forces with no warning. (Never appears on Galactica in the flesh.)
As far as gleaning anything about alignment based on their location, I don't see it. To me, the alignment (based on lore) would likely look like:

Cavil vs D'Anna

Cavil Faction: ones (Cavil), fours (O'Neill), fives (Doral) and Boomer (Cavil also hated the Final 5, wanting them dead and/or boxed), the Hybrid (if it exists) may be in this faction, or work as an indy

D'Anna's Group: twos (Leoben), threes (D'Anna), and Athena, Caprica Six may be in this faction, or work as an indy

So it looks like they're all just all over the place. And I'm just doing this after lots of reading. So I could of course be wrong, but I think if the factions/groups follow show lore, this is the way it will look. Hybrid and C Six are an unknown, afaik. Though I do know that D'Anna angered the Hybrid at one point with her actions, so that's why I would put it with Cavil, or as an indy.

I'd love to hear more input from other show watchers, or wiki readers.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Night Two

One other thing. I mentioned this in passing earlier, but it may have gotten lost in a barrage of other posts.

Other show lore peeps - I remember there was a specific thing that 4 of the Final 5 kept hearing. It flipped them, they started having secret meetings about it, because it was confusing. I have not mentioned that specific thing, just in case it would trigger the Final 5. Is this something that we may want to try to go ahead and trigger? Or try to avoid saying precisely just in case it triggers it? (And, indeed, saying this thing may not trigger them. The trigger time may already be built into the game.) Am I being too vague here? I want to talk about it, without actually saying it, if it seems to be a bad thing to trigger?

And, just to other players - do you all think we should come out and say the trigger thing? To see if it does something? Or try to stay away from that entirely?

Somebody else asked a lore question relating to where folks are stationed. Let me go back and look for that too.

Anyone notice a pattern? Do we think it would be silly to finish out that 2 column, in case there are more there?

Also, in case of being silenced, or something awful happening to me, I'm going to post again my equation for sussing out our new sortie schedule.

Where X = Goldama's posting of EoN

(12:34 am EST - X) ÷ 2 = New sortie time, and a return to every 6 hours

Also, according to my figures, our 48 hour night will end May 13 at 11:24 pm EST. I believe, at that point it will be approximately 11 our hours (5.5 regular hours) since our last sortie by G-Man at 12:34 pm EST. Based on that, I believe our next sortie (if time goes back to normal) will be allowed 30 minutes after End of Night (rather than 1 hour).

That means our next sortie will be at 12:04 am EST on May 14. If we then return to 6 hour intervals, the adjusted schedule above will be correct.

I have been using this extra long night to rest my brain. I think figuring all that out probably broke it again. Also, anyone else who has followed this bizarre ramble and math experiment, please to double check all the things.

Another thought - depending on exactly when end of night happens, and time goes back to normal, we may need to adjust the 30 minutes a bit. So, we'll just see exactly when EoN is tomorrow, and then use this formula: whatever time is left until the next 12 hour sortie ÷ 2 = exact new sortie time (if nothing else, this is a note to self so I don't have to rethink it tomorrow.)

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Night Two

I thought that was an interesting find by Marms too. I'm not sure who to correlate it to, but it's interesting to note that this is the only game she's ever said it in. That has to mean something. Right?

Also, I think this last time was the first time JJJ missed "So say we all". It was my first time missing it (which, I didn't really miss it, as I posted at the exact same time as Goldama, but my post did show up after his, and did not have "So say we all" in it - so going by the letter of the law, I guess I flubbed it) and I am pretty certain it was JJJ's first time missing it too. I'm not sure if I can say more about that. Just trust me. (Ha, that's funny in a mafia game, isn't it?)

I stopped trying to figure out SW in Turf Wars. But if anyone else can, please do so. :nicenod:

Also, before the end of night, I'm going to post the complete sortie schedule, from beginning to end, and the updated sector map. I've decided to start doing that before the end of each night, that way, if I happen to die, it will be easy to find in the thread for someone else to take care of. :noble:

Nutella died as a Toaster instead of being rezzed like Epi. If we're still hunting rezz ships, why did Nutella die? I had wondered earlier about the possibility that some Toaster models are linked with a certain rezz ship (assuming that Golden the Coward ;) isn't just trolling us by allowing the grid search to continue needlessly).

Looking at the roles, Epi flipped as...
Sharon ‘Athena’ Agathon (number eight)
...and Nutella flipped as...
Simon O’Neill (number four)
Different colors, different locations, different lynch results? I can't remember what color goes with which location. Can someone refresh my memory please?
Got you for 12:12 pm tomorrow, thanks!

Also, ah, I wonder if that is the difference? Here's what the host post says Re: colors/locations:
Location: Those whose names are written in teal are stationed aboard the Battlestar Galactica. Those whose names are written in peach are not. This may change during the course of the game.
Maybe because Athena was on BSG, she was close enough to a Rezz Ship to be rezzed. (Also, can we just take a minute to enjoy the fact that I can call Epi a she? :shifty: )

And maybe because Simon wasn't, he was too far?

There has to be a reason Epi was rezzed and Simon wasn't. So it's either location of the cylon OR the fact that we had destroyed a Rezz ship during the night.

Do you think by end game we'll know which it was?

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day Two

There was 1 post in particular of SD's that had caught my eye quite a while ago when reading it. I found it here. It may not be much, but it stood out when I originally read it. Here's a link to it, if anyone wants to get context: http://www.mafiathesyndicate.com/viewto ... 04#p275104

She had spent most of her posts up to this point being confused and excusing herself, and so forth, then I find this post interesting. She talks briefly about being confused about searching for res ships, but not really understanding the mechanics of it or anything.

And then later, she talks in detail about how LC could have been sabotaging our plan, because he's done that in the past as a baddie. But... I thought she didn't understand the whole res ship thing at all? (Also there were at least 2 times she mentioned something about me being "in charge of" or "directing" the sorties. Which didn't sit right either, because I feel I'm neither of those things. :shrug2: )

(Peachy pink color is what I used to highlight the sections that struck me as slightly disingenuous)
Spacedaisy wrote:I have basically been able to read the last ten to fifteen pages or so, nothing really before that and I have t gotten to even reading Golden's posts.

Here are some quick thoughts:

Silver for someone who seemed pretty upset at not getting understanding from others about their RL interfering with their ability to playthegame you seem hell bent on painting me as bad. I would ask you to consider the fact that I started this game by missing like the first 40 pages of posts. I a, struggling to understand a lot and trying to keep upwiththe current stuff alone is hindering me from being able to get a handle on the stuff that has happened before I was able to actually play which is informing a lot of the opinions flying around. Additionally, I don't get what is going onwiththis mission.

I understand that we are searching for res ships, I don't understand how. I take it I did is in charge, but is she always and why? Also, different people are slotted into times to announce a sector in a grid, why those times? Does this require to post it at an exact time or something? Golden mentioned Kat and Hot Dog coming back alive, does this mean there is a chance they will not come back alive? Aren't they roles that are actively being occupied by players?

Linki @ Lorab: I didn't play either of those, but it seems to me Scocub had a game chock full of secret events at one point... Can't remember though. Either that or Jason Maher's Mystery Mafia, which I didn't play either, sadly, I wanted to but couldn't.

Anyway
, I would really ask you cut a bit of slack here, I'm not laying low to hide, I'm not a non-contributor type. I'm really trying to get my feet under me. If you can't respect that, then whatever.

Regarding LC, I could absolutely see him trying to move us away from a ship by using a weakness in the plan as an excuse to choose somewhere else. I've seen him do it before in Fight Club. He tried to deter us from using a plan to protect us from our actions getting messed with by a member who had been recruited. He had already been recruited. That said though, I can also say I think as a cov he would do exactly what he has done. And him sidetracking us for one sortie can't explain the whole thing derailing for a few searches. He could have no idea what the person after him would do, right? I could see him doing this as a bad ploy, or I could see him doing it as a concerned civ. hard to say which it actually is.

Now I am going to grocery shop and when I come back I'm going to try to actually read all the stuff I missed earlier... Try being the operative word.

I don't know, something about this just didn't sit right. Partly about the layout of the post too. I remember talking about post layout as a baddie before in BTSC. How couching something with some OT can be helpful when you need to slip in a nefarious morsel. And that's exactly what happened when she started actually talking in detail about the sorties and LC.

In fact, speaking of what I do or do not know, I am trying to figure out WTFrak is going on with our sortie times. Naughty Goldama. I'm thinking, that he has merely amended our time frame for sorties to every 12 hours, instead of every 6 - to equalize the fact that this is a 48 hour night period. Was this the night period he said would be 48 hours due to Lady Goldama's birthday?

That's how I understand this: While one hour appears to pass to those of you in the fleet, two hours is passing in the outside world. And we need to go by "outside world" hours, rather than "fleet hours". Does this seem right to anyone else? My mind is in knots from it.
