The Syndicate

Dante pondered what Uncle Jim Bob had said, and the more he thought about it, he was certain he was NOT pleased at all.

"My dear boy," Uncle Jim Bob sat down on the couch next to Dante, laying his dark, steady hand on Dante's shoulder, "those were code names for two of our best agents over there."

Jim Bob blinked slowly, his hands remained steady, "Oh, you remember that, do you?"

The man walked up to Dante, and shook his hand warmly, "I wasn't sure I'd ever see you again, this is a wonderful surprise."

They finally entered a large, brightly lit, white room and looked around in awe at all the people, also wearing white, working at tables silently. "What is this place?" Nadine asked.

Nadine's hand went to cover her open mouth, and someone somewhere heard a voice that very softly whispered, "Polar bears moved the island."

Nadine touched the mosaic, and the dancing figures, only to realize it was actually an amazingly clear high definition display screen.

The tunnel was not as cramped as Nadine had imagined; it was air conditioned, had electric lights lighting the way, and pretty colorful mosaics decorating the walls.

"I'm not sure yet," Dante said, "I mostly just grabbed it out of instinct."

Peter began rethinking his sudden reappearance, and seriously considered slinking away back into the forest.

Just then, a bright spotlight shone through the hole that was blown in the ceiling, and a loud voice boomed over a speaker from a hovering helicopter, "Stop, we are DEA agents, and we're here to pick up the bear in the jet pack!"

"What was that?" Peter asked, as all three took cover under the closest piece of furniture.

Nadine wondered if it had secretly been Peter dressed as a more realistic bear wearing a jet pack, but she didn't dare say anything.

He aimed his robotic cannon arm at the floor, and blew a hole big enough for him and Nadine to drop through, maybe they could escape this crazy, talking bear with opposable thumbs and jet pack yet!

As the bear asked that question, he immediately remembered why Dante wouldn't remember him; Dante's memory had been wiped the last time they had been in the lab together.

"Not really, no," Dante blinked at the bear.

"If you're looking for Mongo, he doesn't live here anymore," Dante spoke in an exaggerated fashion, thinking it would be easier for the bear to understand him through the door.

Nadine had a puzzled look on her face, and asked the bear (through the door), "So, are you nice, and just asking to come in, or what?"

They leaned against the locked door breathing hard, when they slowly turned their heads to see the bear's face looking in at them from a window in the hallway.

"RUN!" shouted Dante, as they slammed the window shut, and ran out of the room and into the hallway, locking the door behind them.

"Does that bear have opposable thumbs?" Dante asked Nadine, "How is it climbing the sheet rope?"

Suddenly, Dante and Nadine heard a loud rustling in some nearby bushes, they looked at each other, and then back towards the sound.

Nadine rolled her eyes with irritation, but Dante was just not going to quit, as he took off the bear gloves he said, "Look Nadine, bare hands!"

Dante held his arms and hands up in front of him, and gave them a long look before saying, "It was dark in that old shed, I thought this was a bio-hazard suit!"

As her camera lens focused on the large furry creature in front of her, she realized this was not a bear at all, it was a costume!

Very punny!

She slapped her cheeks a couple of times, "Snap out of it, Nadine," she whispered softly to herself, "you're losing your mind."

She studied her reflection carefully, eyes tracing every line her life had written on her face, and brushed away a single tear.

Or was it???

She held her hand up in an attempt to shade her eyes slightly, and squinted to see if she could make anything out.

The paratroopers glanced at one another, they could read each other very well, and were all thinking the same thing.

"I forgot I put these here", said Nadine, as she pulled three chicken tenderloins out of her pocket, before taking a bite out of one.
