Mongoose, Kate was the other one insanifying people. If you two had ended up on the same team, you could have been really efficient at it.

Re: The Shining: Night 6

Also, a couple of other things.

The night polls, starting on night two, had an insanity level assigned to each answer. If your vote matched your insanity level, you got -1 lynch votes the next day. This never had an impact because no one was ever lynched by a single vote or a tie after day 2.

On the first night poll, anyone who said they had no coat would have received extra lynch votes from the cold if the Overlook ever burned down. Again, it didn't come into play.

Finally, the easter egg was that if someone ever cast the second, third and seventh votes (room 237) in consecutive polls, they would have received a rez they could use on anyone. No one even got close, though.

Okay I'll stop now. :|

Seriously, I think it's hilarious that MP led the charge to get me lynched (and much less so that I tried to get him lynched). You must have been laughing your tail off from behind the scenes, Logan!

Since I didn't get to participate much, what was the purpose of the insanity points? How did that work out?
Yes, it was very amusing, but I got pretty nervous when the only two people capable of killing were gone on the first two days.

The insanity points were how people joined Lloyd's team, and also one of the ways in which The Overlook could win. Of course, so few night kills made it hard for both of them.

We searched everyone but Mongoose and Snow, and then Mongoose went and led the charge against us. We just tried to lynch people we knew weren't Lloyd hence the hasty argument to lynch Kate. Also, the calling out of time at the last 10 minutes I totally didn't get until after the lynch, but figured out what Kate was saying.
You had two insanity points at the end and would have joined Lloyd's team the next day, causing Mongoose and MP (and yourself) to win. The fact that Mongoose got you lynched was most unfortunate for all involved.

The long night is finally over. The sun is out, the snow is melting, and coming up the road from sidewinder are a distant line of snow plows and police cars. Congratulations, you made it. Although you may have some explaining to do when the cops arrive...

I hope you all had a nice July 4th Ball.

Thank you all for a wonderful game! You wee all amazing participants and I couldn't be happier with the way things unfolded. Congratulations also to the four winners, S~V~S, Bullzeye, Snow Dog and Nevinera. I will be happy to answer any questions about the game (a list of all the roles, secrets and win conditions follows,) but for now, please enjoy this post-game analysis by Gene Shalit.

Re: The Shining: Night 6

As the day wore on into night again, things began to get weird. It was as if all the vague, imagined threats in the hotel had gotten sick and tired of subtlety and decided to come out to play instead.

Naturally, this was terrifying, and even the most stalwart of the remaining guests had difficulty keeping their composure. Finally, S~V~S snapped.

"I can't take it anymore!" she shrieked, and promptly started stabbing Hedgeowl with a kitchen knife she had picked up somewhere.

"What did I do?" asked Hedgeowl between stabs, in what most would view as an underreaction to her present situation.

The others, like sharks sensing blood in the water, came to S~VS's aid and soon, Hedgowl was no more.

"Man," said Bullzeye. "I really don't like this hotel. Let's not stay here next year."

Hedgeowl has been Lynched. She was the other Grady Girl. It is now Night 6, the final night. You have 24 hours to send in PMs if you think they will continue to do you any good at this point.

Re: The Shining: Day 6

Room 237 appears, anticlimactically, to be empty. A normal hotel room like all the others.

"Well, that was disappointing," said S~V~S.

"I told you so," said Snow Dog.

Others are not so blasé. It is obvious that the fear and paranoia of this place was wearing heavily on the sanity of the guests. They glanced about frantically, as though certain that an axe wielding maniac were about to jump out from behind every corner. Whose nerves would be the first to snap, drawing blood yet another time under the influence of the Overlook and its sinister ghostly inhabitants?

For a long time it looked as if no one had the stomach for any more killing. The remaining guests just stared at one another, suspicious but unwilling to make a move. Then, suddenly, someone pointed at Vompatti who barely had time to say "Who, me?" before being torn limb from limb. Poor Vompatti.

"Say, what's that?" asked Kate. Looking up, they noticed the door to one of the hotel rooms was ajar.

"Did you open that?" asked Bullzeye.

"Not me, Vompatti is the only one who stayed in one of the rooms last night. Maybe he left it open."

"Too bad we can't ask him," said Mongoose.

"Do you suppose someone's inside? Someone else, I mean?" asked Hedgeowl.

"I don't know, but I'm willing to bet something's in there." said S~V~S, her voice shaking with nerves as she spoke.

After a good night's sleep all the guests felt refreshed and ready for more killing! The events of the night led them to be even more certain that there were evil spirits in their midst, and that they would have to be exorcized (brutally) if any of them were going to get down from that mountain alive, or at least with their sanity intact.

Regrettably, it had snowed more during the night and the roads were just as impassible as ever.

I love Verdi, but I don't love his Joan of Arc opera.

And what about Mitriade, K87 by Mozart? The crazy string of neverending arias.
I generally like Glass' instrumental works better than his vocal ones (except when the voices just go lalalalala or sing solfege or something) but Akhnaten is okay. It's a little long and tedious, but it has its moments. It's probably better to see it than to just listen to a CD. I much prefer Einstein on the Beach or The Photographer though. I haven't heard the Mozart opera you mention, so I can't comment.

For some reason, MovingPictures thought this would be a good time to mention that he intended to kill other people. He barely made it through the sentence before his head was bashed right in by the others.

"Woo," said SVS. "That was tiring work."

"Yes," agreed Snow Dog. "And it's getting late. I think we could all do with a nice rest after all this fear and killing."

"Good idea," said Kate. "I don't know if I trust any of you enough to sleep though."

"I don't know if I trust any of you enough not to sleep," was Vompatti's typically surreal retort.

"But if we're going to sleep, the obvious question is where?" asked Mongoose.

"This is a hotel, dummy!" Said Bullzeye. "Why you so dumb?"

"No, that's a good point," added Hedgeowl. "Should we split up or stay in the same place? Either way, I'm scared."

Re: The Shining: Day 4

As the guests sipped their drinks, beginning to feel slightly better, they gradually became aware of soft music playing throughout the ballroom, although try as they might they could not trace the sound.

"Golly, I do believe this place is hainted!" exclaimed MovingPictures07.

"That's racist," said Hedgeowl.

"How is that racist?" protested Bullzeye, and just like that, the squabbling resumed.

After a while, Kate had the following insight. "Well, if this place really is hainted..."

"Haunted," corrected Snow Dog.

"If this place really is haunted, then any one of us could be an evil ghost, or worse an evil non-ghost!"

"Should we continue our policy of randomly killing off members of our group then?" asked Vompatti.

"I don't see that we have any choice," was Mongoose's sensible reply.

S~V~S had misgivings about this approach, but she had to confess that the logic behind it was inescapable.

Re: The Shining: Night 3

The bickering continued until someone noticed that Nevinera was missing. This was unsettling to everyone, and they decided to put their squabbles on hold until he could be found. The thought of anyone unaccounted for in this terrifying place was enough to put anyone on edge.

They wandered the hallways, calling his name, but answer came there none, until Hedgeowl saw something moving out of the corner of her eye as they passed the Ballroom. Nevinera was inside alright, dangling from a rope affixed to one of the chandeliers. Whether it was guilt over the previous killings or simply the hotel's malevolent atmosphere, no one could be sure, but something had driven Nevinera to hang himself.

"Jesus..." said Vompatti. "This is too heavy. I need a drink."

"Yeah, too bad they didn't leave any booze behind for the winter," lamented Kate.

"Looks like they didn't take all of it," Mongoose said, pointing. Sure enough, behind them was a fully stocked bar, ripe for the picking.

"I could swear that wasn't there before," said Snow Dog. However, everyone was shaken up enough not to care too much about where the liquor had come from. They just needed something to steady their nerves.

Nevinera has been lynched. He was Dick Hallorann.

Re: The Shining: Day 3

It took a while, but eventually everyone managed to find their way out of the hedge maze. Cold and tired, they retired back into the hotel. There was something disconcerting about the place, however, and although it was eerily quiet, some of the guests thought they saw flashes of movement, coming from abandoned rooms, out of the corners of their eyes.

"Well, now what?" asked MovingPictures. "We've got the killer, but we're still trapped up here until they can clear the roads."

"How do you know that Dex was really the killer?" asked Hedgeowl suspiciously. "Or that he was the only one?"

"Why would you assume that?" countered Bullzeye. "Do you know something you're not telling?"

And just like that, the squabbling began again. The hotel was making people more and more paranoid and distrustful as time went on.

Snow Dog once again stood up as the voice of pacifism, but not all were satisfied with this sort of talk.

"That's exactly the kind of false sense of security you would want us to feel if you were bad," exclaimed SVS, and the bickering continued.

Maybe Danny is sort of an info role and 'Tony' is just a game mechanic/storytelling thing? If we don't have an actual Tony role then I'm not sure what else might be the case.
Sorry for not making this clear. Bullz is correct. Tony is just the name I give myself when handing out info to Danny.

Grady twins, Delbert, Lloyd, Stuart?
I've never read or seen The Shining so I'm not actually familiar with the characters or plot, are we now basically looking for the 'baddie' characters? The whole secret win conditions thing makes it hard to tell who we actually need to get rid of.
I just sent this in a PM to someone, so it seems only fair to post it in the thread. There are no good or bad characters. There is only your win condition, and those who stand in the way of your achieving it.
besides Stephen King. he was a killer.
Which is only bad depending on your point of view.

In case anyone is wondering, tied lynch votes are decided randomly.

Re: The Shining: Day 2

Snow Dog folded his arms and stubbornly refused to participate in acts of vigilante justice. Naturally, this enraged everyone else, and he was about to be torn to bits when suddenly, Dex raised his voice.

"I'm not going to wait around to be killed like the rest of you," he announced. "I'm going to hide in the hedge maze!" And he ran outside and into the topiary labyrinth. The snow had stopped for the time being and it was starting to look almost pleasant outdoors.

"Stop him! He's getting away!" shouted Mongoose, and all of a sudden Snow Dog was forgotten. The group chased after Dex, madly pursuing him into the maze. At last, Nevinera caught him and pushed him down. Upon falling, his head struck a rock and split open like a Hawaiian coconut. "Whoops," said Nevinera.

Zany Dex has been lynched. He was Stephen King.

"Oh, well yay," Nevinera amended. Of course, now they were all stuck in the hedge maze with no clear memory of the route they had taken.

Without commenting on whether your lynch would be erroneous or not, I think I will extend the voting for another two hours. Since I ended the night early yesterday, I'm worried that people forgot when the poll closes. Four missed votes is unacceptable with so few players.

You have until 3:25 Eastern to vote.

How was the museum?
It was okay. I thought the new exhibits were less interesting then the ones I've seen there before. They did have a cool film about the Kennedy assassination though. It featured the live radio broadcast from the day, with black and white footage of various things like bullfights and bullets going through lightbulbs in slow motion.

I think I might go to the museum. It's been a while since I've been and they tend t be nice and air conditioned. I'm working from home these days, and I get all my work done before noon usually, so it leaves the afternoons free for whatever.

I am so jealous. All we really have here is the Dali Museum. Which is great, don't get me wrong, but there's not a lot of rotating exhibits in such an artist-specific site.

One thing I'll say for DC is that the museums are fantastic. My favorite is the modern art one, but they are all good.

I've seen the made for TV version endorsed by King. It is embarrassingly bad.
It certainly ain't as good as the film.
Sample dialogue:

Wendy: "Red rum? That sounds like something a pirate would drink!"
