Well, I never saw her again in any context. But I can't confirm that no one else did.

Re: What do you be readin'?

I'm not a big Tolstoy fan, which didn't make my Russian and East European Studies degree any easier. War and Peace caused one of classmates to bust out in tears in the middle of a class. She was never seen again.

Sloonei wrote:That's encouraging. I've spent the last 6 months absorbing everything Joseph Campbell ever said, and he mentions Joyce as one of his favorite writers a lot so I'm motivated to get through it. I could have probably picked something more accessible to start, but where's the fun in that? Also Ulysses is all I've got.
I largely read it because Stephen Fry did a documentary about how much he loves Joyce. I regret to disagree with the good Mr. Fry.

It doesn't get easier after the first three chapters.

I love the Iliad. I like the Odyssey. I didn't like Ulysses. I hope you do, though!

I didn't know about this project until now. I just read all your entries. Most interesting!

The Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James. I knew I would like it based on the negative Amazon reviews complaining that it was hard to read and used too much Latin.

Sloonei wrote:I need help, Syndicate! I just got back from a wonderful two week vacation during which I did no reading at all. Before I left, I had just finished book 6 of Paradise Lost. While I was on vacation, however, I found in a book store "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" by JRR Tolkien, and obscure piece of nerdity that I've been wanting to get my hands on for a number of years. It's a lovely day outside and something needs to be read. Do I continue with Milton, or do I indulge in my Tolkien excitement?
Finish Milton first. The Adventures of Tom Bombadll is okay, but it is far from Tolkien's most interesting work. Personally, I regard Paradise Lost as the finest poem in the English language.

I just finished the little-known Herman Melville novel "Pierre." Possibly the weirdest book I've ever read, including House of Leaves.

It is pretty much only used in Choose Your Own Adventure books. "You open a door and behold a gleaming hoard of treasure. The very sight of it dazzles your eyes. Do you a) leave it alone b) grab as much as you can carry c) search for one really special item?"

Spacedaisy wrote:Just realized I never answer Bea's question! It is hard to put my finger on the why. I think perhaps because I feel like the author is forcing a connection on me perhaps, or that by writing in the first person I feel like I should be putting myself as the reader into that character's shoes, but I don't even know them yet. I much prefer third person narrative, though obviously it is not make or break for me, it just runs a greater risk of losing my interest because it takes me longer to get into the first person narrative.
How do you feel about a 2nd person narrative?

bea wrote:@ daisy - that's odd to me that you don't enjoy books in the first person so much as books in the third person. I know most writers make the decision to write in the first person because a) they are telling THAT character's story and b) because it does tend to draw in the wider audience. People tend to like things that are written in "I" and "me" because they can replace their own selves in "I" and "me." I'd love to hear more about what it is about books written that way that make it more difficult for you to enjoy. Even if it's a soley personal thing.
I find this odd, becasue I also dislike first person narrative, it seems limiting. I tend to dislike things written in the "I" because it is making presumptions about my viewpoint; I tend to automatically disagree with first person protagonists becasue i am curmudgeony that way.

Taste is so very personal.
It seems you two are not alone, because I tend to write a lot of short stories in first person (the influence of Poe and Lovecraft, I think) and a lot of magazines I submit to say they don't like it. I do think the first person is harder to sustain over a whole novel, though.

I'm reading that too! It's very good, and it's nice to have the annotations by Waite to point out when Levi is making up nonsense (which he does with alarming frequency)
