A lot of mafia, especially in endgame, is just a series of puzzles, and we can't all do every puzzle but everyone has different and complementary strengths. You essentially puzzled out the Fred and Speed lynches and it was beautiful to watch.

I don't mean to seem demeaning or anything about you not figuring stuff about because I was in a biased position and can't say how I would have done in your position. I will say that I puzzled out the double busdrive thing on my own after MP's claim but before reading the spoilers, but other than that there's a reason I said I was being uncharitable, lol. You played amazingly given the stressful circumstances, and pulled through at the end.

Well, LC specifically used the term "forge" which would have been weird for him to make up imo, and he claimed it was used on Golden but he was obviously lying, just not about the ability itself.

I thought that your role activation combined with LC's jokey hint at the Forge ability would be enough, even before Fred's flip. Frustrating, that is. I've been silently screaming at the thread (and not so silently screaming in the spoiler chat) for the last week. I got rather excessively and uncharitably annoyed that (a) juliets didn't piece together that Quin was good and (b) nobody puzzled out how the night 1 busdrive worked (for those of you who haven't read the spoilers yet: neither MP nor Golden lied. Marmot switched JJJ and Golden. Hence JJJ -> Golden -> Fredwood.)

I'm really glad town won and I wish I had been alive a little longer but nonetheless I enjoyed this game a TON. Like, really a lot. It's rekindled my mafia addiction. That may be because my ego was rather inflated by being seen as a super-civ who helped the game when really I was mostly just lucky :p But also it was a fantastically constructed game. Actually yeah you're right. The alternative explanation is rather simple:

Marmot redirected you (and him targeting you on N1 sounds believable by default), and Elohcin targeted Fredwood with whatever. If Elohcin is Marmot's teammate though this'd mean that two baddies targeted Fredwood simultaneously. That'd be weird.

I dunno, I don't think Eloh looks like a civilian at face value.
No no no. Marmot's role targets the two targets that are switched (in this case that would be you and Fredwood). If this happened, then Eloh would have targeted you originally and been switched to Fred, but presumably Marmot's busdrive would also be seen as targeting Fred.
What Golden and Fred are trying to tell you is that Golden's target could have been redirected by something other than a busdrive (Fred has lots of fancy words for different things I don't understand, but one possibility is that someone has a role that allows them to be like "If Golden targets someone, switch that target to [either someone random or specifically Fredwood]"

What I just said in the previous sentence. He had been defending/townreading Marmot for so strongly for the whole game that (especially combined with his strongly pushing the Dys case against marmot's lynch) would have been incredibly brazen of him to act that way as Marmot's teammate. I would be amazed if he was, but maybe he's the type to pull that. One point that others have brought up that may nudge me back toward thinking that is the fact that he's pretty much disappeared today with his tail tucked between his legs and has not made any effort to redeem himself.

Sorry, there was a post from JJJ that I thought was from Sloonei (the one about Jack easily going with popular opinions, which he's now responded to). But I think Sloonei's interaction review posts were also good.

The original case from JJJ is older, I believe it's actually back from early d2 (his analysis of the sig lynch + nacho kill). But that was weaker compared to the stuff from today.

Sloonei wrote:So what changed between your PoE list and your "no reason to town read" list?
Time passed. In the immediate aftermath of the map claims I gave Marmot a bit of a berth, and then as his posts went nowhere from that point I progressively cared less about that. Marmot was in my PoE originally anyway, I deliberately didn't list him because of said map. That's what I was trying to nudge to Nacho when he asked me.

Anyway, that one point where I gave the "nullest of null" reads on Marmot should clue y'all in that I am not his teammate. I am literally the guy who analyzes the hell out of dead scum interactions in every game I play, and that means I am very well-versed in what sells and what does not. I don't give you a useless waffle on my teammate because that does nothing to benefit me or my team -- it only leaves me open to answering questions like this later. I know better. Take it or leave it I guess.

I don't follow Jack at all in the bus driver discussion. I don't see why there's any reason to assume anything about either Fred's or my alignment. The most basic value of a re-directing role is that it prevents the civilians from handling the night phase the way they want to -- it promotes a chaotic information environment. There are a ton of different theories one could apply to Marmot's purported actions, assuming he is responsible for the target discrepancy Golden has reported, that work out for three of the four possible alignment arrangements between Fredwood and I. Town-Town, Mafia-Town, and Town-Mafia. The only one that I'd struggle to see a scenario for is Mafia-Mafia, not counting my own inherent knowledge of my alignment. Because I am me, I am generally a likely target for whatever. Doctors love to protect me, jailers love to jail me, cops love to ID me, watchers love to watch me, etc. Shit, in recent memory even vigilantes love to shoot me. Bus driving me with anyone is by default a near-sure means of making certain the role has value that night, because someone's JJJ target will get screwed up.

Even if you're discussing the matter of a cop, the idea still holds in a Town-Town scenario. The scum would stand to lose a lot if I am confirmed town by a cop, because I am a much more potent threat when I am not hindered by accusations (see: Turf Wars, Mad Max, and the latter half of ROTTK). By swapping me with a different townie a less threatening ID is assured. And that's only for a cop, which is already a speculative thing.

At the end of the day we're still talking about Marmot, perhaps the player on this roster least inclined toward actual strategy. He does whatever he wants on a whim.
Was this post supposed to make me feel better about you? Because it didn't. Especially the highlighted paragraph.

Dang. Interesting.

Tbh I have still been tempted to townread Scotty though. Partially because of the role claim, even though he conveniently claimed to be blocked and couldn't prove it. The fact that he was hinting at something from the very beginning of the game makes me want to believe him. And I've had other towny feelings from him in general. So the null marmot interaction is not enough to sway me on him.

I'll have to look into him more because there were some solid reasons I've kept a town read on him (one that comes to mind is the not wanting to kill Nacho thing, even for WIFOM, but  )

I'm a watcher. I watched Jay. If marmot did what you guys are suggesting and swapped fred and jay, I should have gotten 'golden targeted fred' but I didn't. I wasn't showing as watching fred, despite the fact the results I got were for Fred. I got that no-one was targeting Fred.

It should be noted that last night I was showing as targeting the player I watched. So I've since had that confirmation.

It was a baffling result for me. I still haven't figured it out. But it isn't entirely explained by the marmot role, even if that is part of what happened.
Golden wrote:"As the Busdriver, you may target two targets, actions affecting each targets are switched"

OK, I've checked with sprit, but looking at this again, I can see how I might be still seen as 'targeting jay' as it's just my action that is switched and not my target. That makes sense.

Huh. This is bizarre and confusing but ok.
Jackofhearts2005 wrote: If you didn't get MM, he didn't busdrive Fred with JJJ. You were misdirected by someone targeting you or JJJ was nexused.
But wait. I was confused about this as well. I was wondering why you wouldn't have seen that MM targeted Fred. But then I thought it might be justified by the nature of the busdriver role. Like, picking two targets to switch wouldn't show up as targeting, because its purpose is to switch who's targeted. It operates on a different level. Maybe? Idk, it could make sense to me as being like this. A "host intricacy" as LC says.

This requires a bit of a leap and I'm not willing to conclude anything from it, but I see it as enough reason to at least begin to speculate about Freddy.

Alternatively, Marmot redirected night actions away from ScummedScummyScay so that he couldn't be ID'd by any cops.
What about investigations? Pretty key role you left out.
read the sentence at the bottom.
No, this is still along the lines of a town 3J. If I'm the cop, 3J is among one of the highest priorities for a cop check. Redirecting said investigation to a scum Fredwood would be a big dumdum.
Good point. I suppose I just have a hard time understanding why scum metalmarsh redirects things from town Jay onto another townie.

Yeah. I don't see any good reason why Marmot would target two townies, one of them being Fredwood who doesn't stand out much/isn't widely read as town. I can't really see him picking Fred to be a target if he wasn't his teammate. So, barring the possibility that this switch was the work of another switching role, I think this is actually pretty damning for Fred. Occam's Razor tells me Fred is MM's teammate.

Pfft, searching is for the weak. I just skim every post in each iso for mentions of him. :p (To be fair I usually skim just to look for anything notable, not necessarily just marmot mentions, but I feel better knowing I'm not missing anything)

I'm inclined to agree with this (the hypothesis that Marmot wanted things intended for JJJ to go to his teamie Fred and vice versa).

juliets wrote:nutella, when you are finished with your speedchuck research could you talk about your suspicion of LC? I am a notoriously bad reader of him - I once handed him the game when I was a civ and he was a baddie. I did skim through his posts and saw he changed to Marmot seemingly on your recommendation which I thought was a good thing but obviously you are seeing something else in him.
A lot of it has to do with connections to other players, including Marmot. When I looked at LC's ISO I got the feeling he's a likely teammate of Marmot's based a few things, and JJJ got the same feeling from Marmot's mentions of LC. I could look back and see if I can pull up specific places that support this feeling, but it's also kind of a general vibe, and also has a lot to do with connections I see to other players who I think could be marmot buddies -- there are several I have considered, but sketchy interactional reads re: LC have been the common denominator between all of them. To be fair, I flip-flopped on LC a fair amount for the first couple days as well, so it might just be that he looks ambiguous and so people have ambiguous feelings toward him, but that's easy for a teammate to hide in, so in my mind it increases the likelihood that I'm right about at least one or two of these possible connections I'm seeing.

Re: Phenon Mafia: Day 3 - Karma

Just finished looking through speedchuck's posts and I am seeing some of the same things that Scotty mentions above. Definitely some weird waffling on MM. He quickly follows me in voting for him, only to switch back to Scotty. Then comes a lot of confusing flip-flopping: before those votes, he had done his Scotty ISO and then a quick one on MM, after which he seemed to have a pretty null read on MM. After he follows my vote, he says Marmot and INH are tied for his second-place scum read/lynch preference after Scotty, and puts them as red in his rainbow. He then switches his vote back to Scotty, says he likes INH's criticism of the MM train, and then suddenly makes that weird post saying he thinks MM and INH are town out of almost nowhere, and says he thinks it's very unlikely that MM and INH are scum. But then at the last minute he puts the finishing vote on MM. I don't really understand what happened in his mind there.

Part of me wants to feel the same way about him that I feel about Sloonei, that he was honestly changing his mind and was flip-flopping with good intentions. But part of me finds it pretty suspicious -- and it goes along with his flip-flopping in reads of LC as well. Early in the game he mentions several times how he could see LC as bad but leans slight town on him nonetheless. Then he goes back to a slight scumread of him after Strawhenge posts a case, but never follows that up. On Day 2 he says "LC gradually made more sense" and later that he's "looking better" and "I'm at a slight town read on him where I was once light scum." Next mention of LC is in the orange section of a rainbow with no explanation. WTF?? Like, I understand having trouble making up your mind on LC because that's how I felt for a while too, but saying you have a town read of him and then suddenly placing him at a solid orange without explaining why... that's textbook teammate behavior. :suspish:

Why have you felt good about him?
In general I have really liked and agreed with a lot of his contributions, and got pretty strong town vibes.

Scotty wrote:Ok. So I went back through speedchuck's posts.

He makes a statement where he looks to go over a myriad of names, focusing on me and MM. he then posts a complete breakdown of my posts at that point, with comments of what he'd like to see to improve my standing in his eyes, which included a general comment of posting more and backing up statements.

After my giant "case" he then says he's moving on to MM and posts this:
speedchuck wrote:http://www.mafiathesyndicate.com/viewto ... 78#p335178

This post is interesting because it contradicts itself? It, at the beginning of the post, says that logic points to Dizzy doing an on-purpose fakeslip.
Then says later in the thread that it is an accident.
Then I think they ended the day on Dizzy, despite saying they felt good about Diz in the same post.

Maybe Marmot just didn't want to be on SIG?

I don't know. Most of what bothers me about marmot's posts probably have to do with their playstyle/his low activity thanks to other games. Nothing particularly useful, I think. Would lynch scotty over marmot. Unless contradicting themselves in order to seem agreeable and unsure is a Meta-Marmot-Metal-Marsh-Mafia-Move.
Wait, that's it? You linked to one post, and said it was "interesting"? With a Question Mark??

A brief questioning of his possible motive for not voting sig, but chalks up the entire history of marmot with his suspicion hinging on his "playstyle/his low actively due to other games." :suspish: Where was I? Not in other games? Oh right, marmot and I were in the same game of champions and both of us had stuff on our plates. But why does he get a pass? Did you even ISO his post history?

This is like putting some chicken in the oven, forgetting about it, coming back to find your house has burned down, and the first thing you think is, "oh I forgot to start on the broccoli. Oh well"

Compared to the case on me, you shrugged off MM as if you never really suspected him to begin with, and never looked back the entire rest of the day.

Dude, you bad.

VOTE SPEEDCHUCK

Dang. I like this. I'm gonna iso him myself.

Re: Phenon Mafia: Day 3 - Karma

Like she admitted that she only signed up because nobody else was and she felt bad that it wasn't getting filled up, but knew she wouldn't be able to participate much. That pisses me off tbh. Don't sign up for a game you don't intend to play. She could have easily contacted other people who might have been interested in signing up who just hadn't seen it (as I expressed in the sign up thread, it took way too long for a general PM to go out asking for signups). Really nothing irks me more than when people sign up for a game and don't even try to read the thread. When I sign up for a mafia game I take it seriously as a commitment to keep up as well as I can. I have no respect for people who don't view it this way. She needs to be replaced.

Re: Phenon Mafia: Day 3 - Karma

Eh, I think it's pretty obvious that Eloh has just not read any of the game at all and was just popping in to vote, and presumably she felt like Quin was someone she could trust for some arbitrary reason. I don't think we can read much into anything she's done because she literally has not read the thread, and I kind of doubt she would openly express that trust of Quin if they were teammates. Honestly I'm kind of annoyed that she hasn't asked to be replaced at this point. She could be bad and not participating, or she could be town and not participating, and we have pretty much nothing to indicate which is the case.
