What a bizarre movie. It seems just bizarre enough to elude a Best Picture nom for the next Oscars, but also is grounded. I don’t know how. I saw it a few days ago and I’m still processing it. Things that made me audibly go ‘what the fuck am I watching’ had me actually tearing up when reintroduced later in the movie. I can’t describe how that is possible but this film does it well.
It just…you should see it. It’s a dark comedy but also sci-fi action but also heartfelt and emotional? I can’t describe this genre.
mindblowingly stunning experience, moving and trippy and utterly unlike anything else.

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
I recently watched Jupiter Ascending for the first time (with housemates who had seen it before). While I largely appreciate how extra/campy the Wachowski sisters' projects can be (the Speed Racer movie was an absolute fucking trip lol), I found this one mostly to the point of cringe tbh. Amusing and entertaining but I wouldn't say it's high art.

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
Just watched it and yeah, it was pretty fun. Very enjoyable and definitely lots of really cool stuff they did with sound synchronization etc. Wouldn't say it totally blew me away as much as it apparently did to you, I could name plenty of other films with just as impressive or more impressive cinematographic flourishes. But it totally made me want to do cool shit in time with music, lol.DharmaHelper wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2017 5:51 pm
I like Baby Driver on a more technical, official level. Seriously if you haven't seen it the fucking editing and music and all that shit is so next level.

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
I just watched it and loved it, humor very much included -- I thought all the funny lines were done quite well. Overall I found the movie to be a pretty awesome experience.DharmaHelper wrote:Stunning visuals and effects, decent story, compelling characters for the most part, humor kind of feels out of place, sometimes doesn't land, feels rushed in parts.DharmaHelper wrote:Dr Strange 7/10

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
I went to see Crimson Peak the other night and it was quite good. Lots of cool visual motifs and stuff, excellent Victorian gothic aesthetic. I'd recommend it as long as you're okay with blood/gore/ghosts/creepy stuff (there weren't really jump scares, just some more generally disturbing things). I'm really not big on horror but this was an impressive piece of cinema.

Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
I loved The Martian. I had read the book, which was quite good, and the movie was totally true to it and brought the story to life in a terrifying, awe-inspiring way that brought me to tears more than once. Definitely recommend it.RadicalFuzz wrote:Martian was pretty good. Lots of the monologues felt appropriate, he would be creating a video log as opposed to just talking to himself, and the movie wasn't bogged down with crazy amounts of "I'm the only man on Mars dear god why" depression. A few characters were introduced by name for the five minutes they affected the story and then promptly forgotten about. The characters the movie spends time on, however, feel pretty complete. Really solid, you feel empathy for Damon, and that's what sells the movie.
