Nerd alert. Yes this song is about the Necromancer from Lord of the Rings lore (as mentioned in the Hobbit).
I was wondering what you'd sub for this cat, and this one totally makes sense. The opening sequence (and most of the song) is definitely a catfit. I don't believe they had keyboards yet, so they did all of this with guitars and percussions which is amazing. It's too bad they hadn't gotten better at writing multi-part songs, and figuring out how to write transitions, as that always seemed to be Rush's bane, despite how excellent they were at nearly other part of music-writing. (I was also reminded of how bad the spoken narrative parts of this song are
)
That said! There's some really excellent parts. Particulaly the guitar around 6:30, and the full instrumental section at 7:00. I do think they captured the mood of the different parts of the song just fine (like in that part, it is very obviously a battle scene). Also the soft closing segment I always found kinda hype. One of the highlights of this album for me (and better than all the short songs at the beginning).
