I'm not sure I understand the mindset between needing to love your image before you can change it. Usually people change because whatever they had before wasn't working for them.

The climbing gym I work at, kids can be as young as 4 or 5 to harness up. We have special little full-body harnesses for them, so they don't slip out of the normal ones. But the safety reasons are certainly something to consider.

Btw Alison, if we are ever in the same city, we must go rock climbing together.

Climbing is the best, I hope you stick with it! For me, climbing is the perfect mix of physicality, mental puzzle, strength, grace, and thrill. Also, because of your reliance on a belayer, it's also an inherently social activity, which is a plus....not to mention the fact that some of the best crags around are conveniently located in some of the most gorgeous camping/hiking areas in the world.
