In the end the fact three vig shots hit them (when you had no guarantee of having more than one), you had four saves, marmot didn't use his day stop, and you lynched at a high percentage correctly all made this look like it was a walk in the park for the town, but the reality is the town slayed. No-one should think you won this because the odds were in your favour.

It's like a recruitment mechanic - I've always said that in some circumstances with recruitment I'd sabotage my new team for my old one, so don't recruit me! But then, when it happened to me in A World Reborn, it was actually rather fun. On the whole, though, I agree that it's a cruel mechanic.

Oh, and Scotty just reminded me. DH wasn't double targeted. Wilgy's ability randomised their first one from their actual target and then they were still able to target DH on their next kill, so DH would probably have won if not for that bad luck.

Also...

The host posts told you that there were two mafia teams within two night posts, which I expected people to pick up on. They also noted Marmot's power use and Wilgy's power use. One thing they didn't do was tell you whether a kill was missed or not, despite the flavour.

Not randomised, no. But I wrote many deliberately alignment-ambiguous roles and then sorted them into alignments afterwards.

In addition, "Role 1" included a lot of the more whimsical roles, "role 2" was where the serious business happened. So the cops and forgers, for instance, all came along in role 2.

And as many people realised, I wrote some town roles that sounded very bad and some bad roles that sounded very civ, for role 1 in particular.

The other thing I was hoping for/expected but never eventuated was people posting in haiku that weren't targeted, just to avoid taking votes.

One of the most interesting things to me was how hard it was to get people to believe the word 'random'.

The first post literally said they were randomised.

So yes, all the Strex ended up on one tribe. Bad luck, but I also never expected LoRab to sit on the button for as long as she did, even though she didn't know what it did.

You also were only able to get the benefit of one shot roles once, but jack reloaded you after you used a vig shot.

Kyle your message to scotty you way overestimated the impact. I think the best thing you could have done was just imagine you were civilian and use the role in that way. You still managed some really fun messages though.

Most of the thanks need to go to juliets, who is just an amazing cohost. This can’t be understated. I created the setup, but she did most of the work.

Oh yes, that also definitely favoured the civs epi, but that aspect i was sure of its impact on balance. The two life thing I wasn’t as sure of the level of impact.

There was a point in the game where if you had been able to get scotty lynched it really could have turned the tide. But somehow he kept making it through...

The thing I was most surprised about is that neither baddie team ever even attempted to kill sloonei.

It was not.

I included the rule because I was a little concerned that the two-life set-up favoured civilians quite heavily, and I wanted it to create doubt. In the end I don't think the setup was too badly favouring civilians, although people were better than I expected at assessing whether roles were better for town or mafia and correctly placing them as a result.

Congratulations in particular to Scotty - I don't think I've ever seen a doctor hit four times in a game before.

And Epignosis had a pretty blistering games in terms of his reads. He had the game correctly solved very early.

Well done to everyone, though. It was a game in which people tried really hard.

Independent win cons:

Scotty (role 1) was independent - he would have been the sole winner had he survived until the game was otherwise one (reaping everyone else alive)
DharmaHelper - You will win if: a) you voted for the person who was successfully lynched in at least 7 lynches; b) you took votes in at least 7 lynches; and c) you are dead at the end of the game. He was something like one or two lynches with votes off winning.
Spacedaisy (role 1) - she could recruit one player, which was Sloonei, and they were both independent, survive to win.
Spacedaisy (role 2) - also survive to win.

Other than scotty who went from independent to town, all other players had the same affiliation in both lives.

Coloniabob

You are 38: Punch buggy (Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3). Once per day, you may post a picture of a Volkswagen. The first person to say "punch buggy" and post the colour of the car will lose their vote, and the value of that vote will be added to yours. The player losing their vote will not be informed.

Quin

You are 21: Quin, finding himself (The Search for Quin). Poor Quin is having an existential crisis and is trying to find himself, but he is looking in all the wrong places. Each odd-numbered night you will investigate someone to see if they are Quin (which, of course, they are not, since Quin is you). You will, however, receive the number of their role and their affiliation.

Dragon D. Luffy

You are 32: Venusaur (Pokemon). Starting from 0, each day that you remain in the game, you will begin that day phase with 1 fewer vote (eg on day two you will start with -1 vote, on day three you will start with -2 vote etc). Each night, you will choose a player to evolve - the value of that player's vote will increase by one. You may not target the same player twice any closer than four nights apart.

Sloonei

You are 100: Negan (Survivor). On each even day, you must post a gif of Negan and threaten a specific living player with it. At the end of the following night phase, you will learn their role number and affiliation.

Epignosis

Role 1

You are 91: Chun Li (Street Fighter II). You are so fast, you'll see assassins coming. Factional mafia nightkills will not affect you.

Role 2 (unused)

You are 69: The Sun (Elemental). Each night, you will PM one element to the hosts (Light, Darkness, Gas or Dust) and one player to be targeted with any effect the element may have. If the Moon is in the game, they will also choose one element out of Light, Darkness, Gas or Dust. When you and the Moon are both in the game, your element choices will combine to form one effect. Each combined effect may only be triggered once. Your target will get the benefit of any positive effect, while the Moon's target will suffer any negative effect. You may not choose the same element or the same target on consecutive days. You will not be informed of the effects of your elements.

Scotty

You are 87: John H. Watson, backup doctor (Phenon). If Levi Strauss is dead, then each night you will choose one player to protect from all nightkills. You may not target the same player two nights in a row.

Spacedaisy

Role 1

You are 76: Thomas Paine (Chicka Chicka 1, 2, 3). *SECRETS*

This role will appear as a *secret* when you die. Each night, you may invite one player of your choice to abandon all of their other alliances and join you in the Brothers of the Revolution. If anyone accepts your offer, you will gain BTSC with them and they will lose their existing win condition and gain yours for the duration of their lifespan in that role. You may not invite the same player twice. Once a player has accepted, you may no longer send any invites.

Role 2 (unused)

You are 24: Meyers Wolfsheim (The Great Gatsby). You will choose a player each night. That player's vote will be worth one additional vote the following day, and you will be permanently immune from any night actions (positive or negative, including kills) from that player. You may not target the same player twice.

Boomslang

Role 1

You are 9: Justice Strauss (A Mafia of Unfortunate Events). You must provide a list of all living players to the hosts, which you may update at any time. This list will be used to break all ties (players higher on the list will obtain any benefit, players lower on the list will incur any negative effect).

Role 2 (unused)

You are 84: John Orr, arsonist (Phenon). You will douse a player in petrol each night. That player will not be able to benefit from any positive abilities or effects that night.

It was the worst decision he should have made. MacDougall himself would never have failed on such a scale. But he was too preoccupied to notice.

Night 16 has ended. No-one has died.

It is now day 17. It will last for 48 hours.

"You think I'm steering?" asked S~V~S, as the Normandy listed to one side "I don't steer anything, elf!"

"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille" sang Epignosis, who had been regularly taking a baseball bat to anything and anyone he could find.

"I just want a turn" said Sloonei, who had wrested Lucille from Epignosis' grasp "I died yesterday, surely this is the least you could give me."

"No" said Epignosis "Just because I was on spring break and momentarily put the bat down, doesn't mean you get a turn. Give it back."

"I'm talking to you, Epignósis", said S~V~S

"Who is Epignósis?" asked colonialbob

"Oops" said S~V~S "Excuse me, that's a verbal tic I picked up recently. It's Dóm's fault."

"Pika2" said insertnamehere. "Excuse me, I seem to be uncontrollably dramatically allergic to something. Pika2.

"TWO ADVERBS" screamed Epignosis. Epignósis was also disturbed, albeit on a separate plane of reality.

Suddenly, Epignosis manged to wrest Lucille from Sloonei's grasp, but it happened so suddenly that he let go. The bat hit Kyle in the head, who immediately fell over, dead.

"Just another one heading to the reanimation factory" said Dragon D. Luffy "and I'm just fine with that."

Day 16 has ended. Kylemii has been lynched. He was:

88: Violet Baudelaire (A Mafia of Unfortunate Events). Each night, you may send a message to a player of your choice through the hosts. You may not target the same player on consecutive nights.

The Citadel Council were tiring of keeping the same generic space setting for so long.

Suddenly, the remaining champions found themselves on the bridge of the Normandy. The corpse of Long Con was sitting in the captains chair. As the players looked around, they realised that all of the chairs of command contained the corpses of other champions. Sig was in the communications chair. Speedchuck was the pilot. LoRab had her finger poised above some kind of button, but no-one was quite sure what it did. Ninja was monitoring...

The champions gasped! Ninja was alive when they had last seen her. The Council had taken the opportunity to reduce their numbers yet again. A morbid pall fell over the champions. If ever there was a place that reinforced just how important it was to avoid the fate of death, this bridge was it.

Night 15 has ended. Nijuukyugou has died. She was:

5: The Gunslinger (All Fall Down). Once, during a day phase, you may kill a player (by sending a PM to the hosts).

It is now day 16. It will last for 48 hours.

Boomslang and Colonialbob were having an air-lightsabre-duel. Boomslang attempted a flip, but it didn’t go well. Colonialbob laughed at him.

S~V~S was taking selfies of her in her tinfoil hat. “I can post these to Instagram when I get home” she said.

“Nice tinfoil hat” said Spacedaisy.

“Just remember, just because I’m wearing a tinfoil hat doesn’t mean I’m using it” said S~V~S. “It’s purely a fashion accessory.”

For clarity, yes I did answer to say that the game will end if town have eliminated all anti-town based on the roles people are currently in.

Epignosis was giving a lecture to various sets of aliens, explaining to them earth concepts.

"This is garbage" said Epignosis, pointing at one of the slides.

"Bosh'tet" said one of them.

"I don't have an exact translation of that" said sprityo "but Urban Dictionary suggests one interpretation is bastard."

"ROLE CLAIMING" shouted colonialbob.

"INFODUMPING" yelled boomslang, who was hugging a tree.

"I'm hungry and I need a nap" said ninja.

"I just remembered how much better the Jeopardy think music used to be in the old days." said S~V~S "why did they ditch the orchestral version, it's way better!" she went off and hummed it to herself on loop.

"I know it's challenging when we only have 5 choices" said Sloonei "but if you just do whatever I say we'll be fine. And I think we should vote for... err.. umm...."

It was a challenging day for all concerned. In the end it seemed that no-one was entirely satisfied.

"Don't worry" said sprityo "I'll take one for the team. You've got this!"

Day 14 has ended. Sprityo has been lynched. He was:

53: The Mountaineer (Mountain). You’re so famous you’re on money. Each night, you will choose a player and "buy them off", taking their ability use for yourself. That player will not receive anything in exchange or be aware that their ability has been taken. If their ability is targeted and positive, you will be targeted instead. You will also name a target for any negative abilities or effects. These two people must be different, and you may not choose any person on two consecutive nights. You are TOWN.

I'm not worried about talk of a 'bastard role'. For me it's no different to saying something like 'my role is really strong, dont' lynch me' or 'lynch me, I want to see my second role'. They're towards the line but on the right side of it, because they give no actual info and can be used tactically true or false.

However, saying things akin to 'lynching me won't give you insight into other players' is infodumping - whether true or false. For this reason, sprityo is taking two penalty votes in this lynch. Any future infringement will risk modkill.

Everyone had been busy listing their greatest hits. Well, not quite everybody. Most people. It certainly occupied a lot of everybody's time. So much that people barely noticed when dawn rose and everyone was still alive.

Nevertheless, Jacob had spoken (through Ben Linus), and what they discovered was that, oddly, many of them now couldn't be hurt, at all. It wasn't clear how temporary the effect was, but it was clear that more people should have been following the word of sock Ben.

"Well, why wouldn't people take Ben seriously" said Scotty "I did murder my father for this after all. And then I find out that all I get for being protector of the island is this stupid t-shirt. You know what I say,
though. Sometimes life hands you limes, but if you put them in your sock and turn it into a slingshot, you'll be able to jump to Warp Factor 3."

No-one has died. It is now day 14. You have 48 hours to lynch someone.

Im sorry you feel that way, LoRab. I also know how frustrating it is to be suspected and not have the time to properly defend yourself in general. But a new game will emerge, and every game is a fresh start. I look forward to playing with you again!
In the original culture that many of us came from, like Daisy, Golden, Juliets, LC, LoRab and myself, we had a lot of social norms. We did not lynch people who could not defend. It was considered common courtesy. Whether that meant because they were silenced, or whether they were out of thread for real life (LoRab is a Rabbi, and it is Passover, even if she was a low poster anyhow). Some things about the melding of cultures have been good for us, some perhaps less so. We play a more aggressive win-focused game than we used to and are conforming more to the norms of the wider Mafia world, but we have given up some of our charm and kindness in the process, imo.

Taking the win that way just didn't happen. It would have been considered very low. But of course, if someone took advantage like that, they would lose the courtesy afforded to everyone else in the future. People got a pass when cursed, silenced, or they had RL issues. They didn't get phase after phase, but often they did get a full phase grace period.

There are positives and negatives to that kind of culture, but one of the great positives is it really did create real friends for life kinds of friends, and once you have that bond, abusing the cultural norm just wasn't done. I was just rereading a couple of the games I hosted there to get role ideas for my matrix, and remembering how different it actually was - it evolved in it's own bubble. There's definitely elements of this game that derive from my background there.
