Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

If Jay wins after I mentioned the BAFTAs we should declare the whole thing null and void lol. Would I have beaten Rico in the guilds?

I’m in trouble in round four. I somehow need jay and dunya to go out in round 3 and try to stay ahead of Rico...

Pretty happy with my performance even if I bow out here though. I do think anyone who plays again should get to keep one actor/actress from their current roster.

Some thoughts post-TIFF... Golden has probably got 3 of the eventual Best Lead Actress nominees on his roster. DH has the favorite to win Best Picture, and Supporting Actor. Dunya has a potential Best Pic spoiler and a lot of possible nominees...
I could have more than three.

A couple more days for BO money to get in there. *And* I've got Lin-Manuel so "Supporting Actor in a Comedy/Musical" is like...mine.
That latter part is probably true.

But I have Mary Poppins, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Lady Gaga so I'm feeling fairly decent about my chances in the Comedy/Musical categories too.

One more week of the box office there is pretty significant for me. Now if they could just move it forward another week again... or two.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

Like literally fan reactions to Star Wars make zero sense to me. Rogue One is the worst of the four and the Last Jedi the best, both my a mile, in my opinion. Both in terms of artistic merit and Star Wars merit.

JaggedJimmyJay wrote: Tue May 29, 2018 3:35 pm I thought Solo was close to awful, and I’d consider it a valid candidate for being the worst Star Wars movie.
Spoiler: show
Rogue One was soooooo much worse. I spent about two weeks afterwards trying to rewrite the first hour in my head. It made no sense, and what's worse it undermined Episodes IV-VI on so many occasions (the Death Star blows up planets slowly? Darth Vader and Leia literally saw each other but later the ship claims to be a consular ship? And many more things beside).

The Prequels are also terrible in comparison.

I'd say Solo fits in neatly at 6th out of 10.

While it was mostly fan service, I found it did it well. It was actually fun, the script was decent, the various set pieces all worked (particular the Kessel sequence, which had basically no weak parts at all), and the characters were all consistent. Even the actor Han himself, who I assumed I would come out seeing as extremely weak, I felt like didn't do nearly as bad a job as I expected. Best of all, it left me wanting to know more about Qi'ra... and that wasn't the only one of the new characters that was actually interesting. It made me see the potential in the stand alone movies where before I was cynical.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

I do not understand how this is grim - it's probably on track to $700-800m, not at all bad. If it was a Marvel movie or a Pixar movie this would hardly be called grim.

For my part though, I thought Solo was a massive improvement over Rogue One. It actually made me believe in stand alone movies, and I want another one based on the ending. However, I'm still more interested in time periods far removed from the existing saga.

Re: Fantasy Movie Thread - In-Season Thread

I can't even understand how this is a debate. The rules are what the rules are. Terry Crews was clearly credited in the cast before the movie came out, so DH made an informed decision based on that.

Timmer's 'cameo' rule obviously came about to prevent people unexpectedly nicking off with part of a pot that wasn't anticipated. It's about allowing for transparency. DH wouldn't have picked Crews if he wasn't on the imdb page for Deadpool 2, most likely. Why should he be punished for that?

I mean, the reason it's completely predictable is the same as when you steal something and the judge says 'why did you steal it' and you say 'because it only cost 5 cents so it's not really stealing anyway' and then you get convicted for 17 years manual labour.

I think your rule would be subjective to apply, but even if it was able to be expressed objectively it wasn't a rule at the time the draft occurred, so it would be wholly unreasonable to change the rules on someone now. And I say this as someone whose box office take is being directly affected.

timmer wrote: Sun May 13, 2018 7:23 pm It would definitely add an interesting element to the game... once the contest is fully finished and discussions starts for a potential season 2, let's see where we are at at that time...

Just looking at the current numbers, there would be a crazy layer of scheming involved... a movie like Operation Red Sea has made only $1.5 million in the USA, but $579 million total worldwide...
Yeah, chinese films would be the death of us all lol!

But I have to say that it would make British films a lot more viable and it would even the playing field for those of us who have, our entire lives, lived by the global metric not the US metric. Which frankly should be the much more relevant metric anyway...
