Re: G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football

Hey all, sorry I forgot to post this on time. Game summaries here.

WEEK 4 MATCH-UPS:
DharmaHelper (2-1) v. Epignosis (0-3)
G-Man (2-1) v. Golden (1-2)
Leggyorlyb (2-1) v. MovingPictures07 (1-2)
Metalmarsh89 (3-0) v. TurnipHead (1-2)

Also, I have to draft a one-week supplemental team this week because the Patriots are on bye-week. The undrafted Tennessee Titans are also on bye-week, so I have to pick an offense from the following list:

Atlanta Falcons
Cleveland Browns
Jacksonville Jaguars
Miami Dolphins
Oakland Raiders
San Francisco 49ers
Washington Redskins

I know Arizona has a better offense this year, but I didn't expect them to lead the league in scoring thus far.
True that but then again, they've only played the Saints, the Bears, and the 49ers. All three of those teams look to be bottom-feeders this season. Their next few games should be considerably more challenging. Even so, I don't look forward to playing against you one bit. :puppy:

I have to draft a bye-week replacement for New England next week. Now I have to decide whether I want to try to win or tank it to possibly get a better team in a later bye-week draft. We'll see how the rest of Week 3 turns out before I make that call.

But you have to keep in mind that Philly is playing the Jets and the Chiefs are playing the Packers. I'm pretty sure the Chiefs are going to cost me a lot more points than the Eagles score. New England should kill the Jags but they'll have to dig me out of a hole. DH will probably get enough combined points to edge me by a touchdown or more.

Re: G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football

Predictions:

DH v. G-Man
Both of DH's offenses have tough opponents this week. My Eagles offense also plays his Jets defense. That doesn't inspire much confidence in my ability to cost him a lot of points and me gaining them at the same time. The Eagles are a wreck right now and I don't trust the Chiefs defense to do any better this week against Green Bay. New England might bail me out against the Jaguars but I'll need a 50+ point game from them to make up for the Eagles and the Chiefs. I just don't see that happening, so DH gets the win.

Epi v. Golden
Epi's defense plays one of his offenses (Carolina v. New Orleans) so that leaves him dependent upon Minnesota to win the week for him. Golden has Green Bay against Kansas City (who just choked all over the Broncos, who aren't looking all that sharp on offense), the Giants against the Redskins (hard to predict the outcome there), and the Bills defense going up against Miami, who haven't shown any indications of being the offensive threat they were branded as in the pre-season. A lot is up in the air for Golden, but the fact that Epi is relying entirely on the Vikings means Golden should walk away the winner.

MP v. TH
Man, this one has toss-up written all over it. Both of them have two teams cancelling each other out. MP has his Houston D going against his Tampa offense. TH has his Pittsburgh offense against the St. Louis D. That means it boils down to whoever scores more points on their remaining offense. MP has Dallas, who parted ways with their best RB in the off-season and are now down their starting QB and their #1 WR. They're also taking on the Falcons who might actually be pretty good this year. TH has Indy, who plays Tennessee. Which Titans team shows up? If I had to pick a winner, I'd lean toward TH only because the Titans looked bad Week 2.

Leggy v. MM
Leggy's Detroit D plays her Denver offense, leaving her with Seattle to win the game for her. Seattle plays the inept Bears, so she might have a chance if the Seahawks get their crap together. MM has San Diego offense against Minnesota and the Arizona offense against the 49ers. Both of those are favorable for MM. His Cincy defense would have to get blown out by the Ravens to keep this one close. MM by a mile.

MP07 wins by three points. Golden needs Green Bay score a ton of points on Seattle tonight while holding Seattle to almost no points in tonight's game to win. DH v. TH will conclude on Monday night. If Indy can score 19 points tomorrow night, TH will win.

Epi lost. Even though two of MM's teams canceled each other out, MM had Arizona, who scored 48 points. I am stunned.

I also see that my match against MP boils down to the final score of the Dallas-Philly game. If Dallas wins by a touchdown, we tie. Any more, MP wins. Any less or is Dallas loses, I win.

Re: G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football

Another prediction:

DH v. TH
OFFENSE:
Baltimore has a soft opponent this week, which should help DH considerably. However, Chicago faces another solid defense in Arizona, so DH will rely heavily on Baltimore blowing Oakland out in order to put up good numbers. Unless Chicago shakes the sloppy play, DH is effectively handicapped to 1.5 offenses instead of 2. On the other side, TH has Indy, which is looking to rebound in a big way. They're more than capable of rebounding here because they're up against the Jets, who may struggle to keep their offense on the field against a better team. Pittsburgh is up against the 49ers, which is hard to predict. It depends on whether you think San Fran's takedown of the Vikings says more about the strengths of San Fran or the weaknesses of Minnesota. I see Pittsburgh putting up about the same number of points as last week.

Slight advantage to TH.

DEFENSE:
TH's Rams play the Redskins. Major plus for TH there. DH has the Jets who looked great last week but that's because they were playing the hapless Cleveland Browns. On top of it, DH's Jets defense takes on TH's Indy offense, so for every point scored by Indy for TH, DH is losing the same number of points. I say big advantage for TH.

OVERALL:
Baltimore needs to light Oakland up like Las Vegas at night in order for DH to win. Seeing as Flacco is overrated, I'm inclined to favor Turnip Head in Week 2.

PREDICTION:
Turnip Head by a touchdown or more.

Re: G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football

Prediction- I will win a fairly close match against MP07 this week.

I think New England will have enough to overpower Buffalo's defense and put up a fair amount of points. Philadelphia-Dallas should be pretty tight but Dallas being without their best receiver will hold them back because their running game is underdeveloped. Kansas City v. Denver may hurt me if the Chiefs still aren't ready to content with the elites of the league.

MP also has skin in the game between Philly and Dallas. I think his Houston defense will shine brighter this week against Carolina, who only scored 20 points and only gained 263 yard against the Jaguars. In the words of Charles Barkley, "That's turrible." You would think that would put me behind the 8-ball but I have a hard time seeing Tampa Bay accomplish much even though New Orleans doesn't have a great defense.

Final score: G-Man wins by 5 or fewer

You scored about what I expected for your roster. Had MP's defense (Houston) played to last year's form against the Chiefs and their mediocre offense, he could easily have been in striking distance. He needs 40 points which isn't impossible if the Giants play as bad as they did last year.
He should have listened to me and picked the Titans. Marcus Mariota man.
Yeah, but how is he going to look when he's got a top-rate defense coming after him? Specifically, how wide will Mariota's eyes get when he sees J.J. Watt burst through his offensive line at top speed? I think the only thing this game told us is that last year's second-worst team in the league re-tooled better than last year's worst team in the league.

Tennessee's defense was actually ranked #16 in 2013 and their offense was ranked #19, so maybe they got back a few players that were hurt in 2014.

Here are the scores heading into tonight's game.

Image

Golden needs the Giants to score 35 points to win. MP needs a pretty big showing from Dallas to win as well. Both teams play tonight.

I am already assured a win over Turnip Head despite my other offense not playing until tomorrow night. Epi has a great chance of winning over Leggy due to the Baltimore-Denver game being such a low-scoring affair and her defense erased all the points her Seattle offense scored and then some.

Re: G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football

My predictions:
G-Man wrote:DharmaHelper v. MovingPictures07
Epignosis v. Leggyorlyb
G-Man v. Turnip Head
Golden v. Metalmarsh89
While I think DH's roster looks solid, I think the Baltimore-Denver game is going to a tight one. Both defenses seem ready to make statements this year, which will hold the Ravens back a little for DH. I expect Chicago to be a shaky to middle-of-the-pack team this year, so I don't see them fairing well against one of the league's best in Green Bay. DH's defense should do well though. MP's offenses are taking on weak teams, so he should have a nice lead when all is said and done.

Smart money is on Leggy but I still think Denver may be stifled by Baltimore's defense. St. Louis was no slouch last year on defense and they could keep the Seahawks contained for one or two quarters. Not sure how her defense will do against San Diego. Detroit lost some defensive prowess with Suh departing for Miami. Epi could pull out the upset though because his defense is up against the Jaguars. If they're still the joke they were last year, he could even post a shutout. I don't see the Saints racking up tons of point against the Cardinals defense but is San Francisco is as big a mess as everyone thinks it is, the Vikings could clinch the win for Epi now that they've got Peterson back.

This week could be a perfect storm against TH because his offenses are both playing teams with very good defenses and his defense plays a strong offense. I think my defense will benefit from the Texans being mediocre offensively and the Eagles-Falcons game could get ugly for the Falcons and pretty for me. I'll be cheering against both of my offenses all season long but I think I'll win this one by double digits.

Gotta go with MM over Golden. I can see Green Bay clobbering the Bears but I think the Giants are serious underdogs against the Cowboys. Buffalo will have a tough task in containing Luck and the Colts but they continue to beef up their D, so who knows. MM has San Diego, who could have an average game against the Lions but I think Arizona will probably run away with the game over the Saints. His defense (Cincinnati) has a softball match-up against the Raiders and that makes all the difference.

This is what I'd like to do. I don't even care that I get last pick, losing automatically isn't very fun :meany:
The only problem with simply doing one more draft round is that it won't prevent everyone from being down a team. Epi, Leggy, and MP07 will all be down two teams at some point, so one more draft round doesn't take care of the whole problem.

I like the idea of using the damaged goods that nobody wanted to draft. Since I'm running the show, here's what I propose:

Each BYE week, the players who are down one or more team will have a mini-draft, where they get to select a team from the eight that were left over from the draft. We'll make a rule where you can only use a non-drafted team once, forcing us to use a few different teams to supplement our BYE week needs.

How would you prefer we handle the mini-drafts- random selection or by record (worst to best) ?
What if, if you have an offense and defense both on bye, then you just use both the O and D of your replacement team? Does anyone have two offenses on bye the same week? That's the only problem I can see with doing it this way.

I'd prefer to not have a draft every week there's byes... it takes the EZ out of EZ Fantasy :P If it must be done, I don't really have a preference for whether it's random or by standings.

And yeah, I suppose this does require attention to detail... attention to BYE weeks, which is generally the least fun part of fantasy football! :fist:
Here's a break-down of the BYE weeks and how they affect us:

WEEK 4:
G-Man (1 offense off)

WEEK 5:
DharmaHelper (defense off)
Epignosis (1 offense off AND defense off)

WEEK 6:
MovingPictures07 (BOTH offenses off)
Turnip Head (defense off)

WEEK 7:
DharmaHelper (1 offense off)
Golden (1 offense off)
Leggyorlyb (1 offense off)
Metalmarsh89 (defense off)

WEEK 8:
G-Man (offense off)
Golden (defense off)

WEEK 9:
DharmaHelper (1 offense off)
G-Man (defense off)
Leggyorlyb (1 offense off AND defense off)
Metalmarsh89 (1 offense off)
Moving Pictures07 (defense off)

WEEK 10:
Metalmarsh89 (1 offense off)
Turnip Head (1 offense off)

WEEK 11:
Epignosis (1 offense off)
Golden (1 offense off)
Turnip Head (1 offense off)

So MP07 does fall victim to having both of his offenses off during the same week. I still lean in favor of the mini-draft during BYE weeks because each of us only has to deal with it three times (some of us only twice). I can send out PM's right after the Monday night game or first thing Tuesday morning so we can get the mini-draft over with before the Thursday night game (if none of the 8 undrafted teams are in the Thursday night game, then we can let the draft run longer).

I guess for next year we can do one of three things:

1) Repeat a mini-draft or supplemental draft to help players cover their BYE weeks
2) Add a safeguard that disallows people from drafting two teams that share a BYE week
3) Be cold and unfeeling people and make people lie down in the bed they've made

Turnip Head wrote:So essentially you're taking a loss if you have a team on BYE and your opponent is at full strength.
Typically, yes. But you'd be surprised. If your opponent's defense has a crappy game and costs them a lot of points, you could conceivably still win if your defense posts a shutout and your offense is amazing. If your defense is on BYE, then you're actually better off than your opponent. There are so many variables each week because the teams on our rosters play games of varying difficulty throughout the NFL season. There is no such thing as a sure thing.

Looks like Epi, MP, and Leggy each picked two teams that are on BYE week at the same time. Epi is an extra-special case because he also picked an offense and a defense from the same NFL division. Any time those two teams play each other, they wash each other out and he has to rely on his other offense entirely.

It's called EZ Fantasy Football, but it still requires some attention to detail.

The NFL tweaked the scheduling in recent years to keep a few division games at the end of the season so those games matter if divisions are close. Hopefully that's the case this year. I also don't want to shorten the season too much because bye weeks can be a major factor in the middle of the season. Taking a bad loss because one of your teams is on bye week and dominating someone with a team on a bye week isn't an accurate reflection of how good your team really is. Then again, our teams depend on the strength of schedule of the NFL teams we picked. That's one reason I stayed away from Pittsburgh. They have the hardest schedule based on combined opponent records from last season.

I think we're just going to run it the way I did before and we can discuss changes for next year when all is said and done.

Conferences have been established. I will post the season schedule at lunch today.

BADDIE CONFERENCE:
DharmaHelper
G-Man
MovingPictures07
Turnip Head

CIVVIE CONFERENCE:
Epignosis
Golden
Leggyorlyb
MetalMarsh89

Teams play each of their conference opponents three times. Six of your nine conference games will be Weeks 1-3 and Weeks 12-14 because that helps a majority of conference games avoid being skewed by bye week shenanigans. Conference records will be our tie-breaker, making those games more important.

You play each non-conference opponent once plus there will be one non-conference "random rematch" to give us 14 weeks. Weeks 15-17 of the NFL season will be our playoffs. Since there are so few of us this year, we all get in.

Re: G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football

Alright, I'll randomize the conferences (I'm thinking the Civvie Conference and the Baddie Conference to go with the theme of the site) and work up a schedule for our season. I'll have everything finalized before Thursday night's game!

Re: G-Man's EZ Fantasy Football

Wow. I'm surprised none of you picked Miami's offense. They're considered a wildcard contender at the very least. I almost went for it but I decided to get a little crazy. I wouldn't mind their defense either but they play against both of my offenses.

Ha. I'm pretty sure he wants New Orleans but I want to get confirmation first. Then Golden can pick. Golden, you can PM me your top two choices if you want. This way, if Epi takes a while getting back to us I can post your choice and we can roll right along.

Nice. I was tempted but I can't help but feel they're a little too one-dimensional without Murray.
You're not giving that offensive line enough credit.
They'll still have a run game but they didn't fill the void left by Murray. It's getting harder and harder to find elite running backs, especially as the game has become more pass-oriented.

Alright, while I'm picking teams that I can't stand, I'll go ahead and pick Philadelphia for my second offense. If the Chip Kelly experiment works, then my offenses will be like Iggy Pop- raw power baby!

Done!

Now hopefully my final pick will come after all the Week 1 games are played.
Wow. Those are two very bold picks. Are you playing mind games with me? Because now I don't know what to think or who to pick. :omg:

MovingPictures07 wrote:How accurate are offense/defense rankings at this stage typically in predicting how well teams do throughout the season in either regard?
Sports statistics are tough to use as predictive data. It helps more to know which teams had the most turnover or injuries in the offseason. Past results do not indicate future results but good teams tend to stay good (whether on offense or defense) for a few years at a time. There's always the great equalizer called injury though.

I pick New England for offense. I hate Tom Brady and the Patriots but for this, I'll mooch off their offensive prowess.

Heh, now we're back to MM again. I'll give him until breakfast to make his choice or one will be made for him (or two really, he gets to pick back-to-back).

Damn you! You stole my idea. :fist: :P

Now I gotta think about my choice some more. Do I try to snatch two good offenses early and hope a decent defense is left at the end or do I pick a good offense and a good defense early and hope that my second offense can hold its own?
