Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [TOWN WINS!]

HOST NOTES:

I do this with just about every one of my games. There's a lot of little details that I try to put into the mix. Now I shall reveal what I can remember off the top of my head...

1) Yes, this game was inspired by the Warren Zevon song "Lawyers, Guns and Money." I went through a phase where I listened to his Excitable Boy album several times a week. One night it clicked and I started to try to piece together a story from the lyrics of the song. It mentions both gambling in Havana and hiding in Honduras, so I had to come up with a reason the main character of the flavor got from one place to the other.

2) This post in the sign-up thread, where Robbie explains to his dad about what happened to land him in Honduras includes lines lifted and interpolated from the song.

3) In the song, Zevon sings as a sort of protagonist, claiming to be an "innocent bystander." For the game, I decided to flip that around and make the bad guys the ones trying to help the guy out of a jam and the good guys the locals who just want peace restored to their town.

4) The game takes place in mid- to late-March of 1978. I worked in some historical details that point to that, if you can find them.

5) All of the songs that I included with my chop and night posts are songs that were either released as singles or were on albums released during the first three months of 1978. Some of the songs were released earlier than that ("Disco Inferno" for example) but were in the weekly Top 40 charts in late February or early March of '78.

6) All of the night post titles and the final chop post title are Cold War terms.

7) Puerto Cortes is a real city in Honduras. It was the closest port town in Honduras to Cuba, so I researched it and ran with it as my setting. I used Google Maps to identify the different regions of the city that the CIA team was searching through in the flavor. I have no idea how much of the city existed in 1978 though. It's now home to the 36th largest seaport in the world, according to Wikipedia.

8) In the 1970s, both the USA and USSR were investing in Central American countries like Honduras. That made it possible for the Russians to be moving about so easily in the flavor. The USSR contributed millions in infrastructure funding to Honduras, much of which probably benefited port cities like Puerto Cortes.

I'll add more to this later if anything else comes to me.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [DAY 6- TOWN WINS!]

MISSILE GAP

Robbie wasn’t much of a morning person, but opening your eyes to find a grinning man pointing a gun in your face has a way of waking you up rather quickly.

“Well,” the man said, “don’t you have a question to ask me?”

Robbie swallowed hard and racked his brain. After a week that changed his life forever, this was like asking him to search through an ancient life. Suddenly it came to him.

“What’s the passcode?” he asked.

“Lawyers, Guns and Money,” Lawyers responded.

“Oh, thank God!” Robbie wailed. Despite enjoying much of the last few days, Robbie began to weep for joy at the thought of returning to his upper-class, privileged life.

“Get your shit together, kid,” Lawyers barked. “We’ve got to get moving.”

“Where to?”

“Someplace with a phone and an understanding owner of that phone. Once call and we’ll be out of here in 24 hours or less.”

“Perfect. I know a gal at the market. She’s sweet. I bet I can talk her into letting us use her phone.”

“Good. We leave now.”

“Why the hurry?”

“Because the Russians are looking for you, a bunch of locals are looking for me, and the police are looking for both of us.”

“I would say we found you, señor,” a voice said from the doorway. It was the chief of police. He strode into the room with confidence and two Russians toting AK-47’s.

“Very good, my friend,” a third Russian said as he walked in behind the rest. “It seems we have what we call a mutually beneficial arrangement. We have the American boy that caused problems for us, and you have the American terrorist who has caused problems for you.”

Robbie and Lawyers exchanged uncertain glances.

“Tough break, kid,” Lawyers said.

“You mean I’m not going home?” he whined.

“Oh,” the Russian leader said. “I’m sure that we can come to an agreement with your government. Eventually.” He chuckled as his men handcuffed Robbie and put a bag over his head.

“You, my friend,” the police chief said to Lawyers, “will soon wish that you were going with the Russians.”

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [NIGHT 5]

MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION

Like rats from a sinking ship, people fled from the doctor’s office as it suddenly went up in flames. As the last light of day sank beyond the mountains of the mainland, a raging blaze lit up the night. The Oranges and reds of the fire cast a hellish glow on everything around it for blocks.

Once again, a haphazard fire crew arrived on the scene and did what they could to fight the conflagration. There were no car bombs this time. Just pure, unadulterated heat and a shower of embers that threatened to spread the calamity.

Lawyers observed his dirty work from the south. It brought him joy to exact such a costly revenge for the life of his friends. After the previous night, people knew trouble was present, so why bother hiding that reality tonight? He would do this every night until he was caught or he chose to end it his cruelty on his own terms.

Through his binoculars, he scanned the crowd. Like congregants at a cultic ritual, the town folk came in droves; some to wail at the horror of it all, but most just to stare at the unimaginable sight before them. It wasn’t just the locals though.

Sweeping left to right and back again over and over, Lawyers was getting a good sense of who lived in this section of town. There was the rat bastard snitches who sold his team out. Good to know; he’d deal with them at some point. There was also a glimpse of a man looking very out of place. His hair was trimmed high and tight; too conformist to be a tourist. The Russians were based near here it seemed. Lawyers tried to note the general direction the godless Red headed in as he tried to fade back into the shadows of the night.

Suddenly, the crowd erupted in terror. A man emerged from the doctor’s office fully engulfed in flames. He collapsed in the street just feet away from those rushing to help him. Women shielded their children’s eyes while men gawked at the shock of it all.

Let that sink in, folks, Lawyers thought to himself.

Then he saw something else that intrigued him. Another man, this one looking every bit as white as the Russian, but far more concerned. Lawyers squinted through the binoculars to get a better glimpse as the light of the fire danced across the man’s face. Yes- it was him! After days of searching, Lawyers scored his first glimpse of Robbie.

Much as he would have loved to stay and watch another block razed by his handiwork, he needed to move on his target. With the Russians so close, he couldn’t afford to yield them an inch in the next phase of the hunt.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [DAY 5]

ONE OF THOSE DAYS

Despite being found out by the locals and torching the police outpost the evening before, Lawyers and Guns followed through with their plan to canvas 3rd Avenida for any fresh leads on their target. While it certainly moved them closer to completing their mission, it would also be the undoing of Guns.

Block by block, they move east along the Avenida. They met a few locals who thought they had seen Robbie the last few days. Promising stuff, but something seemed off to Lawyers. Everyone’s tale seemed a little too consistent- coached even, perhaps?

Lawyers tried to put this worry out of his mind as he and Guns brokered an afternoon meeting with a merchant who supposedly knew where Robbie was staying. They would have preferred to meet on their terms, but Lawyers and Guns had to concede the location. It was an oddly specific request, stoking that worry again.

The plan was simple- Guns would take part in the meeting, while Lawyers scoped things out from a distance. If something smelled off, Lawyers would use a few methods to signal to Guns to get the hell out of there. If shit went sour, he could shoot his way in to rescue guns if the situation looked promising, or he could disappear into the shadows altogether if there was no leverage or advantage to be had.

Guns knew the risk. He was a CIA lifer, recruited for this kind of work after a stint in the Marines. He knew how to disavow anything anyone thought he might know, and fake a story in the moment when necessary. He was no snitch. Up to now, he had only been interrogated once by a low-level goon in Biafra. His teams had been that good.

When Guns was in position, Lawyers analyzed the scene. He saw two of the men they had spoke to earlier that afternoon. They spoke to Guns briefly before heading inside. As Lawyers panned with his binoculars, his blood ran cold. Heading inside the back door to the same building Guns was being led into, was the tell-tale sign of bad news. He didn’t have time to signal Guns, and doing so would have brought a storm of hellfire straight toward himself.

“Good luck, solider,” Lawyers groaned under his breath.

-------------------

Guns knew something was off as soon as he entered the building. Instinctively, he went to draw his pistol. Halfway through the motion, however, he felt the cool touch of the business end of a Marakov semi-automatic on the back of his neck. He slowly raised his hands to show compliance and to prevent his brains from being ejected all over the wall opposite of his face.

“Greetings, comrade,” a thick-accented voice spoke from behind him. “Come sit, please. I would like to talk to you about this American boy we both want to find.”

I like the thread to reflect the truth. Nons is the unvote option.
Negative: Arsonists and Two-Hand Tapping Guitarists (host/mods/dead/non-players) - we are not hosts, mods, dead or non players. We are players. We must vote. If the Host wanted us to unvote or sleep he would have included the option in the poll. At this point in the thread Dennis is as good an unvote option as SVS
Everything I hate about this post is because I’m neurodiverse but let’s just say I could not disagree more strenuously.
@G-Man can players use the bottom option as an unvote or is a vote mandatory?
S~V~S wrote: Sat Dec 10, 2022 12:30 pm Lets ask!

@G-Man is it OK for players to unvote onto the "NON PLAYER" option, or do you frown on this?

I would say that players should not use the non-player option as a place to park their vote or to 'unvote.' There isn't a No Vote option in this game, so using the non-player option is a bit of a cheat. Roxy was allowed to use it the day she was being punished after self-voting.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [NIGHT 4]

MASSIVE RETALIATION

Lawyers and Guns were not about to be pushed around by some third-world locals. Sure, they had been sold out, and they were hopelessly outnumbered, but they had to respond. Not just any kind of response would do, though. It had to be big and it had to be bold. It had to send a message.

That message came in the form of burning the local police outpost to the ground. It wasn’t where Money was being held. No, he had all but certainly been taken south to the city proper, where the actual police station and jail were located. Lawyers and Guns didn’t dare go that deep into the hornets’ nest. They had a job to do and that meant staying as close to the ports as possible.

They hot-wired a car, loaded it up with explosives, and parked it right on the doorstep of the police outpost. It was two blocks down from the park, so right smack dab in the middle of everything along the main drag. The damage would be visible for weeks to come and intimidate most of the locals away from joining the hunt for the Americans.

First came the Molotov cocktails through the front and back windows. Then they took their positions on nearby rooftops and waited for a crowd to gather. Like moths to a light source, people crept out of their homes, cried out in disbelief, and filled the street around the outpost.

After a few minutes passed, a crude fire crew arrived, as well as an ambulance. The medics treated the officers who had fled their burning base, while the fire fighters fumbled around with their outdated equipment. Just as the fire crew seemed poised to make progress on the blaze, Guns detonated the car.

The initial explosion sent shrapnel striking out in a 100-foot radius. Windows shattered for blocks, while nearby building walls cracked and collapsed from the force. Those who hadn’t been mowed down with the blast and all that came with it scattered in a frenzy.

People were dead. People were wounded. People were frightened. By morning, people would be angry and motivated to hunt down the perpetrators like dogs. Until then, Lawyers and Guns were pleased. They slept well that night.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [DAY 4]

MUY PICANTE

Lawyers, Guns, and Money were eating dinner and reviewing their maps. Another day without locating their target, but Lawyers was very upbeat about their prospects.

“He’s definitely east of the park,” he said. We didn’t cover all of the central sector, but I’d be willing to bet he’s holed up somewhere in the south end of San Ramon, over here.”

“What makes you so sure he’s in the south end?” Guns asked.

“If Dilcia at the market has spotted our boy,” Lawyers explained, “then the south end makes sense. She says that she’s seen him coming down 3rd Avenida the last two days. The south end of San Ramon touches 3rd Avenida. This kid isn’t smart, so he probably headed south from his foxhole and had to hang a left onto 3rd when he ran out of road. I’m willing to bet he followed the same route today.”

“So, we set ourselves up along 3rd in the morning to scope him out?” Money asked.

“That’s probably our smartest play,” Lawyers replied. “There’s always the chance that he stocked up and lays low tomorrow, but we at least have an idea of where to look in general. We work our way, block by block, up 3rd tomorrow and see if we get any more hits or leads on the kid’s whereabouts.”

“Guys,” Guns interrupted from the window of their hideout. “Did we forget to pay Francisco and Javier this afternoon?”

“No,” Money said. “I paid both of them; a little more than yesterday too, since we got good information.”

“What’s your point?” Lawyers asked.

“Well, I see both of those bastards up the street waving in our direction.”

“What the hell?” Lawyers muttered as he and Money hustled over for a peak.

Sure enough, the two men they thought they had bribed into compliance days before were leading a pack of angry local men down the street right towards them. Some were carrying pieces of wood and metal pipes.

“Plan B, boys” Lawyers groaned. The others started stashing the maps and other sensitive documents into backpacks. They traveled light, so their work was swift. Which was necessary with an angry mob descending upon them.

“Lock and load, ladies,” Guns gruffed.

Pistols were drawn, clips were checked, watches were examined, and positions were taken.

“On my mark, we go,” Lawyers ordered. “You know your routes to our backup roost. Keep a low profile if you can and keep them guessing if you must. Anyone not reporting in at Site B in two hours will be presumed compromised at best. Remember your alibis and disavow everything.”

“This little punk is officially on my shit list- we got cops!” Guns hissed. Sure enough, trailing about a block behind the mob were two police cars.

“Remember your training,” Lawyers barked. “Our mission is about to get a good deal more difficult. Now roll out!”

Guns burst out the door first, a pistol in each hand. He fired a few shots indiscriminately toward the mob, but just slightly over their heads. It worked well enough, as most of the group flinched or scattered at the first sign of danger. It was enough time for Lawyers and Money to take off in different directions behind him. Another pair of blasts marked his turning departure into the night.

It was as clean a getaway as they could have hoped for, but it wasn’t perfect. One of them wouldn’t be able to shake their pursuers, though, as night fell on Puerto Cortes once more.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [NIGHT 3]

RESIDENTURA

Robbie couldn’t help but have an extra skip in his step when he hit the town for breakfast. He had a great night sleep, and the food he ate the day before left him energized and feeling great. Surely one more day on the town wouldn’t be too much. After all, there were thousands of people in Puerto Cortes, and enough white tourists to keep the bad guys guessing.

What Robbie didn’t know was that Diego at the market had a cousin who was on the local police force. Rosa, the girl he flirted with yesterday and hopefully today as well, had a very watchful older brother who had heard some rumors from the guys he worked with at a construction site. Just yesterday, there were some Russian guys doing a walkthrough as part of the financing arrangement. They were most interested in anything that anyone might know about an American fellow milling about for no more than the last week.

Yes, Robbie felt like he was on top of the world. The problem with being on top of the world is that everyone can see you. Being visible was the last thing he was supposed to be doing, and yet there he was, walking around like one of those ‘wherever I go, there I am’ fools.

There were others around town who Robbie failed to notice were noticing him. He was too enraptured in his blissful ignorance. He would enjoy the day quite a bit, but shit was about to get very real for him.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [DAY 3]

STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND

A day on the town did wonders for Robbie’s disposition and his hangover as well. At first, he only meant to go out for breakfast and hit the market for more provisions. It turned into a full-on excursion.

As it turned out, Puerto Cortes was rather a lovely place. Robbie quite enjoyed it. The bustling streets and markets were lively and full of amazing smells. He wished he had paid more attention in his Spanish classes so he could be more familiar with the names of some of the food that looked drop-dead amazing. He still would have paid his tutor to take his mid-terms and finals for him though; he wasn’t about to become ambitious or anything crazy like that.

At dinner, it began to dawn on him that perhaps he had been a bit too brazen spending the whole day out in the open. He could feel the eyes watching him as he left the restaurant. As he passed, he swear he saw a few people turn to each other and whisper. Were they the CIA guys in disguise? Or perhaps just locals wondering who the handsome American fellow was. Yeah, it was more likely that they were wondering if he was the person the town seemed to be buzzing about.

At the end of the day, Robbie went back to his hotel room empty-handed but full in stomach and in heart. If it weren’t for the possibility that the Russians and a few locals were looking for him, he could see himself settling down in a place like this.

He sighed a happy sigh as he stood in his doorway, sipping his booze and taking in one last glance at the city life. Tomorrow he would go to the market for breakfast and buy supplies so he could lay low again for a while. For now, he just wanted to take in this moment.

CONTAINMENT

Robbie woke up to the sounds of morning life on the street. The light gradually crept into and spread across the room as he nursed his hangover with bananas and coffee. He stretched for a few minutes to work out the kinks from another night on a mattress that wouldn’t even cut it at a Motel 6 back home.

Once his head stopped pounding enough, he collected himself, took a piss, and pulled his money out of the nightstand. A good breakfast would do him wonders. It felt safe enough to venture out. Despite the hangover, the night was uneventful. That had to be a good sign, right?

He tied his shoes, put on his sunglasses, and opened the door. He couldn’t wait to get out of this place, but right now fresh air and a warm meal was all that was on the menu.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [DAY 2]

CHEAP HOLIDAYS IN OTHER PEOPLES’ MISERY

Having finished off the baleada the night before, Robbie wasted the day on pan de coco and cheap liquor. He was hungry, but all he had left were a few rosquillas, and the thought of eating them made him a bit queasy. Too much fried and too much sugar. He wanted to get out of Honduras, not become a diabetic.

Tomorrow he would have to venture outside for food. Which would be more conspicuous- stockpiling at the local shops, hitting up street food vendors and markets for every meal, or sitting down in restaurants? It was tough to know for sure. He could think about it more, but he took another swig of liquid forgetfulness instead, just for the hell of it. There would be plenty of time to think tomorrow.

Once again, he heard a scuffle outside late in the day. Robbie staggered over to the window to scope it out. The locals were pushing someone around, pointing their fingers and waving their arms. They sure were mad at this person.

Just as the target turned to try to dash away, someone in the mob swung and connected with their jaw. When they cried out, Robbie knew the locals had made a mistake. Sure, white people may all look alike to these folks, but there are clear-cut differences. The crowd may have thought they found Robbie or one of the CIA guys coming to save his ass, but it was just a Canadian tourist. The accent gave them away.

“Tough break, eh?” Robbie said to himself. He chuckled at his own joke, took another swig and let apathy win the day.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [NIGHT 1]

BRINKMANSHIP

“What’s the play now?” Money asked.

“Guns is going to stay in La Curva tomorrow,” Lawyers replied, “just in case junior gets any bright ideas about heading south. Our safe house has a pretty good view of anything and anyone trying to get by. You and I are going to cover Buenos Aires. It’s a lot of ground to cover, but if we can find a few more kind and helpful locals, it shouldn’t be a problem.” He said this last part slowly and over-annunciated while motioning to the two men they were walking with.

Manuel and Francisco looked uneasy. The American men paid well, but something seemed off. The trio kept a low profile and made both of them do most of the talking. They also seemed to try to hide in a crowd whenever local police were present. They were hiding something.

“No mas,” Manuel said, stopping in the street. “No mas, por favor.”

“But Manuel,” Lawyers said slowly, “what about our deal? Acuerdo?”

“Por favor señor, no más acuerdo. No quiero tu dinero.”

“That’s too bad,” Money said.

Guns grabbed Manuel from behind and choked him in the crook of his elbow.

“You want this?” Lawyers asked Francisco.

“No señor,” Francisco muttered.

“Then play ball, okay? Haz lo que decimos.”

“Sí, sí.”

“Finish this one off so Francisco understands just what’s at stake here,” Lawyers growled.

Guns snapped Manuel's neck. Francisco got the message. So did the locals who found Manuel’s body in the alley at daybreak.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [NIGHT 1]

Just a few housekeeping notes to alert you fine folks to:

1) I will add ISO links to each player's name in the OP shortly. I apologize for not remembering to take care of that as Night 0 and Day 1 progressed.

2) This is a good time to explain a little bit about the flavor posts you will read during the course of the game. Flavor makes the game experience more interesting, but the narrative fleshed out in day and night phase posts will only ever speak to the person being eliminated or killed. There will be nothing for you to glean about other players from these posts. In this Day 1 post, for example, the only player that the flavor actually speaks to is DrWilgy, aka the guy taken away by the cop. The cop is just a narrative device used to remove the dying player; you should not read anything into it about any of the players on DrWilgy's vote train. Some of you who know me from long ago might remember that I used to include game-relevant information into my flavor posts, but this is not something that I do anymore. Flavor should not and will not help you solve the game. Only your efforts can do that.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [DAY 1]

FISH OUT OF WATER

Robbie spent the day trying very hard to refrain from peeking out his hotel window. He also spent the day failing miserably at that goal.

In his rush to escape from his hotel room in Havana, Robbie had the bare minimum of smarts enough to grab as much of his winnings from the casino as possible. In Honduras, this set him up handsomely in a rather unassuming hotel.

Going out for food would be the most dangerous part of his day, but he had at least picked up a few things at a market the day he spoke to his father. It was far from the Michelin-star restaurants he was used to dining in with his father’s circle of elite friends, but it would get the job done for at least the next two days. If those CIA guys didn’t find him in the next 48 hours, however, Robbie would have to literally stick his neck out there.

Every time he heard a commotion outside, adrenaline made his heart rate redline. Today, none of that racket amounted to anything, and he was able to drink some cheap liquor to steady his nerves each time. It was far from the champagne at black-tie events, but it served its purpose.

Late in the day he watched as what he assumed was a police officer swooped in on a guy who never saw it coming. He dragged the guy over to his car and tossed him in the back seat. With the windows down, Robbie could hear both of them yelling at each other in Spanish. It was too fast for him to understand any of it.

Robbie missed clean water; he missed air conditioning; but he was still safe for now.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [NIGHT 0]

PORT-SIDE PLANS

The three Americans sat in an empty rail car and walked through their plan for the first day of their search.

“Assuming junior is smart- and there is no guarantee that he is, mind you- he should have stayed north of the bay,” Lawyers said, pointing to a map. “That’s where his boat came in and the pinch points on these straights here to get South to Puerto Cortes proper or East to Travesia hopefully felt too exposed for him to attempt. There’s enough going on here north of the bay to keep him and us busy.”

“What if he sprang South or East instead of staying put?” Guns asked.

“If he went South, then it will just extend our search. We’ll start poking around here in El Copen and La Curva tomorrow morning. Once we’ve talked to enough locals here, we should have a good idea if they’ve seen a gringo lurking around, and if he headed South. If he hasn’t, we find someone trustworthy enough and line their pockets to keep an eye on that southern straight while we expand into other sectors of the town.”

“And what if he took that Eastern pinch point toward Travesia?” Money inquired.

“Then he’s fucked six ways from Sunday,” Lawyers chuckled. “All I can see on these aerials past Travesia looks like small towns, banana plantations, and prime real estate for cocaine lords. If he’s dumb enough to go that far off the beaten path, then we go as far as Travesia, make up a nice little story for the folks back home, and we get the hell out of there.”

---------------------

Across town, the mayor got off the phone with Tegucigalpa. It confirmed the rumors that the local police passed along to him. General Melgar Castro spoke with him directly, a rare honor, but also a chilling omen. Rumor had it that he was on ever-fraying relations with his own military that had installed him a few years prior, but that was beside the point.

The point was that contacts from the USSR were interested in locating an American man who caused problems for the Soviets and Cubans alike in Havana three nights prior. After he failed to turn up in Cuba, they suspected that he got on a ship to evade capture, and the only ship leaving around the right time that evening was currently docked in Puerto Cortes.

The mayor called each of his high-ranking police force personnel. He wanted this young man found before any other foreign interlopers could get in the way.

The hunt would begin at dawn.

Kate wrote: Sat Nov 26, 2022 10:04 pm I take it we are not locking the thread for night 0? And no poll?
No, Night 0 is like Day 0 if you ever encountered them before. It's so people have a full day to check into the game. Locking the thread would obviously not be very helpful for people trying to check in. ;) As of right now, a few people still have not viewed their role card PM. I couldn't think of a poll option for Day 0 on the fly, so we're going without one.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [Night 0]

THIS IS HOW RUMORS GET STARTED

Luis Alvarado rushed home to his father. He wasn't one to exaggerate, so his father took him at his word when Luis told him about the strange men he overheard at the station.

Hector Alvarado had studied abroad in his days as a young man. He was exceptionally gifted as a boy and his studies took him far from his rural village in the mountains of Honduras. Hector absorbed enough English during his two years in California to thrive, and he taught all that he remembered to his precious boy Luis. They lived a modest life in Puerto Cortes; Hector worked for the government as a city planner, and Puerto Cortes was to receive quite the overhaul in the coming years.

Luis knew very little about America, but his father had taught him how to recognize the particular dialect Americans were prone to adopt when they tried to speak Spanish. That's what he recognized at the station this afternoon. Three men trying to blend in, but speaking in a very American-sounding Spanish. They spoke of dangerous things that confused Luis.

Hector had a run-in or two as a student in California to know that the United States government was never to be trusted too far. This talk about finding a young American man at any cost struck a chord with Hector. He asked around to see if any of his colleagues had heard of any Americans nosing about, but no one had heard anything. Yet.

Regardless of how crazy it may have sounded, Hector reached out to the local police. If Americans were milling about, it was probably best for someone to keep an eye on them.

Re: Lawyers, Guns and Money- [PRE-GAME CONTENT]

IMPORTANT STUFF THAT YOU SHOULD READ
Remember that the premier rules in any Syndicate Mafia game come straight from the site rules. Review those rules below, and direct any concerns you may have to the host or moderator(s) on duty.

[Link] Rules and Guidelines on The Syndicate

Also always be mindful of the culture of respect that must be maintained in all Syndicate spaces at all times, to include this game thread and any external communication spaces relating to the game. Players must be respectful to one another, to the game host, to the members of the staff overseeing the game, to the game itself by way of its rules and spirit, to the Syndicate community in general, and ideally also to themselves. Respect is never optional. See our full manifesto on our culture of respect below.

[Link] A Syndicate Mafia Culture of Respect

GAMEPLAY:
1. Days are 48 hours long. I will do everything in my power to keep poll deadlines consistent.
2. Nights are 24 hours long. Per current site norms, night phases will locked during this game.
3. Only those players who have BTSC may communicate with each other outside of the game thread but ONLY in designated BTSC threads or chat rooms. For everyone else, no game-related discussion is permitted outside the game thread.
4. Votes in the poll are the only votes that count. It's helpful but not mandatory that you declare your vote in the thread in a way that stands out to the host.
5. All votes are changeable all the way up to the deadline.
6. A tied day poll will result in no death. Votes matter. There will be no coin flips to determine poll results.
7. Standard alignment wincons are in effect.
8. Dead is dead; you don't get to come back from that. Dead players will have their BTSC rights removed.
9. Alignments will be revealed upon death.
10. I will probably end phases between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. EST for this game. Any earlier is a challenge for me with getting the kids to bed.
11. The game thread will be locked during night phases.

RULES:
1) Be kind to everyone.
2) If you feel like another player is out of line or making/taking things personal/ly, contact our delightful game mod, sabie12.
3) No BTSC regarding the game outside of the game thread(s). Players are told in their rolecard if they have BTSC. If you don't have it, don't engage in it. Violating this rule will result in a modkill.
4) Role-claiming and info-dumping are prohibited in this game unless otherwise specified in the roles..
5) No editing or deleting posts.
6) Self-voting is prohibited.
7) Double-targeting is prohibited.
7) Off-topic posts should be in OT Green.
8) Dead players are to post in Dead Red.
9) Non-Players should post in Non-Player Blue.
10) This is the host's color. Do not post in this color.
11) Participation is polite and respectful to everyone involved. If I feel you may not be paying attention to the game, I will reach out to you. Replacements may be employed if necessary. If you sign up, please play. If you can't play, request replacement.
12) No modkills in this game for inactivity. If you abandon your slot, then your slot will remain empty until a replacement can be found, which hurts your team. If you cannot play, request a replacement.
13) Additional rules will be added/revealed on an as-needed basis.

ROLES:
1) This game is a 17-player Heist, featuring 14 town and 3 mafia.
2) Twelve roles (eleven town and one mafia) are vanilla.
3) Five roles (three town and two mafia) have powers.

Everyone playing the game received one of the following role cards:

TOWN ROLES:
You are vanilla town. You have no special abilities and all members of the mafia must be eliminated for you to win.
You are the Town Cop. Each night, you may alignment check one other player. You may roleclaim and infodump only once during the game. When you infodump, you may reveal the alignment of no more than two other players. Once you infodump, you will become vanilla for the remainder of the game. You must infodump before the mafia is down to their last living player or you will not be allowed to reveal their alignment if you know it.
You are the Town Deputy. Each night, you may alignment check one other player. You only receive information if the Town Cop is blocked, protected, or killed during the night phase. If the Town Cop is chopped or killed, the Deputy becomes a regular Town Cop and will receive their alignment check results each night. Because you are a deputy and still learning your craft, you may never roleclaim or infodump during the game, even if the Town Cop is eliminated. Any and all information that you receive must be worked into cases built for or against other players.
You are the Town Doctor. Each night, you may protect one player of your choice. This will protect that player from all powers as well as the kill during the night phase. Self-protection is limited to once all game.

MAFIA ROLES:
You are Lawyers, the Mafia's conditional vote blocker. Let's face it, lawyers are only effective in these situations when guns and money are around to back them up. If both of your teammates, Guns and Money, are still alive, you can select two players each night and their votes will be secretly voided the following day phase. If only one of your teammates are still alive, you can select only one player each night and their vote will be secretly voided the following day. If both of your teammates are dead, this role becomes vanilla.
You are Guns, the Mafia power blocker. Each night you may block any player of your choice from using a night power. This blocking power is trumped by the Town Doctor's protection power.
You are Money, a vanilla member of the Mafia.
