His Electric period had some interesting parts to it but it ended up being equal parts interesting and Weather Channel music.
Also, no offense to the late Mr. Davis, but after listening to all these albums, I've determined that I prefer jazz saxophone to jazz trumpet. Sax is just a more colorful instrument to me.

It took me a month and a half but I finished listening to Miles Davis' albums- 62 in all. If I missed any, blame Wikipedia. It was very inconsistent about the chronology of his albums and which ones counted as studio as opposed to compilations. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, though I found out early that there's only so much jazz music I can listen to in one day. Listening to Miles Davis did force me to reevaluate my scoring. Now I'm have to listen through everyone but Chuck Berry again to ensure the scores are still accurate. Some will change a little I'm sure.

My latest batch is for one of the architects of rock n' roll- Chuck Berry. Thanks to YouTube, I was able to check out all but one of his albums. He was great early on but he never managed to grow as a musician (my opinion). His later stuff felt mostly like retreads where he'd write new lyrics to his older songs or start tunes off with the same riffs but it was all still very listenable. Few of his bluesy tunes registered much with me either. The man is still alive (and turning 90 in October), so kudos to him for longevity.

I worked up a spreadsheet for all the artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and sorted them all by the date their first album was released (or first single/work published for the few who never recorded full albums). I'm going to go back to the earliest careers. For example, today I'm listening to a mix of Charlie Christian tunes. He never recorded any albums as a solo act or as a band leader. Mostly some good big band music. Next week I'm going to tackle an odd entry to the HoF- Miles Davis. He put out a lot of albums, so it might take me a while. I've found I can only listen to three or four albums a day and maintain adequate productivity at work because splitting focus on work and music requires me to replay tracks now and then.
I've also got a good list going for notable bands not in the Hall of Fame despite being eligible for a few years. I'll post that in another thread.

Since I'm working off the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's member list, I went back to the early days of rock and listened to the works of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Buddy Holly only had two albums of his own (plus one with the Crickets, which I've included in my list). Valens never released a full album while he was alive. Three albums of recorded material were released posthumously. Six albums made for two easy lists to work up:

I fell out of the habit for a bit but I'm making up for it by posting three sets today.
Bob Dylan's first nine albums (including most of his critically acclaimed work) were easy to find on YouTube. After that it was hit or miss. Some playlists had all but two or three songs and some albums are completely blocked. Very odd for a record label to keep the less successful albums off the internet but keep his famous stuff available. Anyway, here are the Dylan albums I was able to listen to:

One thing I did notice is that a lot of Dylan's early stuff was covered by The Byrds. I knew they made a few covers (all inferior in my opinion) but I didn't realize just how repackaged they were.

I've gotten good about not bashing movie genres that aren't my cup of tea thanks to my movie reviews but it seems I'm still a loose cannon when it comes to my musical preferences.

I got through Blonde on Blonde today and can fully agree with you. The only album other than greatest hits is Highway 61 Revisited. I was pleasantly surprised that he never went softer than "Blowin' in the Wind." I was worried it would be Peter, Paul, and Mary type wussy folk nonsense but Dylan's sneer cuts through the accoustic stuff.

I rate each track from 0 to 1 using a quarter-point scale. 0 are songs I hate and never care to hear again. A .25 song may have something going for it but there's something more potent in it that makes me say 'no thanks.' A .50 song is one that is adequate enough for me to listen to casually but I may be willing to switch stations for a better tune. A .75 song is a really good song that I can get into and I most likely not turn it off if I came across it on the radio. That's a rhetorical question,obviously. Taste in music, film, everything, really, is intensely personal.
It's a very imperfect system, grading an album solely by the sum of its parts and several albums are actually tied on my combined list but you cant see the actual scores. I'm finding that shorter albums have an advantage if they contains some 1's and .75's. The more tracks on an album, the more likely you are to have a few .5's or worse, which drags down the overall score. It's creatting some interesting results for even myself but I wanted a simple system, unlike my movie rating system.
As for the White Album, the second half of that double album starts to falter a bit. The first half is great and I listen to it on a semi-regular basis. The Christmas album only had 12 tracks and many were quite good. I'd easily listen to White Album again before the Christmas Album but the scores don't show that.
As for Smiley Smile, I listened to it once and don't remember it now but they had some real lame-o stuff after Pet Sounds. I have very populist musical tastes for the most part but I have some eccentricities. It'll probably take a while to reach them though.

Okay, here we go with my rainbow rankings for The Beach Boys' albums. I picked them because their first album came out before the British Invasion and they've always been some kind of assumed American institution. I was surprised at not only how many albums they recorded (29 plus as EP that came with an album) but also by how unremarkable many of them were. Even in their heyday, their albums seemed stuffed with filler and covers that pale in comparison to the originals.
Pet Sounds is held up by music critics and audiophiles as this amazing, near perfect album. I remember hating most of it the first time I listened to it. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is devastatingly beautiful and all but I just don't notice the kinds of things that music snobs rave over with the album. It's one of their best, but it didn't even reach either blue category for me.
Oddly enough, the only Beach Boys album to hit the blue categories was their Christmas album. I have this policy about not listening to Christmas music outside of Christmastime, so good job Beach Boys, you made me violate my standards.
After Pet Sounds, it got rough. A few gems here and there but it mostly teetered back and forth between relying on the same old kitschy girls-surfing-cars tunes, which were beyond tired by then, or they tried to be too different with their sound and got to socially conscious with their lyrics (a major pet peeve of mine). Basically, they never figured out how to find a way to adapt their sound to their age through much of the 70s and 80s. They tried changing it but adapting works better.

I've only listened to Animals maybe three times in my life. My take on it is that there are really only three full tracks and the two Pigs on the Wing snippets. Sheep is the only song on the album that I loved. The other two main tracks just rambled on for too long for me.Ricochet wrote:I'm actually more than ok with your list, G. Time to kiss any musical credibility you folks may see in me by posting my Pink Floyd discography rainbow. I have Ummagumma as a combined album but also scored and positioned for the live record and the studio record on their own. I wasn't sure how others were scoring them. Nothing fell into the "Good" range, which surprised me. This is a very crude scoring system that I'm using though to evaluate each track on its own and then averaging them together. I'm curious to see how some of my favorite artists fair in this system.
For the record, in using MP's color scale, I'm operating such that point level he listed is the maximum value for the cateogry (in other words, anything between a 4.5001 and a 5 is in the 5.0 color. You can figure it out from there.) Animals and Obscured by Clouds are the only two albums that have the exact same score. I think my spreadsheet put Obscured ahead of Animals because it has an earlier release year. Maybe I'll alphabetized tied album scores in the future.

Rating scale question- Say I have an album I feel is worth a 4.25 (again, I'm grading each song and taking an average for my album score)... Do I color it in Awesome Green (4.0) or in Almost Perfect Blue (4.5)? Would you say that a perfect album is strictly 5-stars or anything 4.6 stars and up? Somewhat Poor -- 2.5
Poor -- 2.0
Abysmal -- 1.5
Anti-Music -- 1.0

I concur. I once heard someone say that the early Beatles albums are the soundtrack to young people falling in love. Ah, Radiohead. I think my rainbow list for their albums might be in stark contrast to the opinions of many. They were one of those 90s bands that I simply never got into. on you, sir. To be accurate and hold myself accountable and consistent through all of my future discography rainbows, I created a spreadsheet and a rating system for grading each song individually, thereby allowing me to give each album a sum-of-its-parts average score. I will then attempt to adapt said score to the rating system you are using here. I will then be able to step back and ultimately rank every album on every rainbow list I make by their score.

Sheesh, MP! One band/artist at a time. I'm working my way through Pink Floyd for the other thread right now but maybe I'll tackle Bowie next week.
