Re: Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Mafia Game [AMERICA RISES]

Overall I’m extremely pleased with how the game went. Despite all of my attempts to project directions the game could go, I wasn’t super confident that it’d meet the standard of balance I aspire to. Go figure it goes to final three.

Both teams had great moments. Mafia dominated early. Town had an incredible Night 5 to turn the tide. Poor Vault City. Enclave and town also both made many mistakes. That imperfection was endearing and true to the Fallout spirit — nothing ever comes easy in the wasteland.

Re: Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Mafia Game [AMERICA RISES]

Anyway long story short on falcon and Alison:

falcon was not allowed to claim his role or information from it. I should have given him a fake claim or just scrapped that restriction. It left him in an unfair no-win situation when Grogu and the mafia team (who had role copped him) kinda exploited things. When folks started demanding falcon claim, eventually the Alison information was forced out of him. It was unfair to him and to town who couldn’t know. So I killed him to allow town to chop someone else (and the role had technically been violated).

Alison was thus outed illegally. When she died I decided they’d both be honorary winners.

Re: Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Mafia Game [AMERICA RISES]

Alison was very unlikely to still have a kill in her pocket that late in the game when she’d already been outed for most of it.

I don’t think that was a wise elimination. It did help Arroyo at least — they were the last town faction to cover their non-Enclave win conditions.

Thanks @Made for joining the game under extremely difficult conditions and fighting your ass off. You did my game honor.

Thanks @sprityo for stepping in and being proactive with my prods. You shot a bad guy in the arse!

Thanks @Kylemii for stepping in early and ensuring my game could have a Chosen One. :srsnod:

Thanks @Syn for taking on the game later and giving it a strong effort while you could.

Thanks @Seanzie for taking on the game latest (I was going to start modkilling after that phase). You played hard and you played well. At least for content in the game thread, you were among the most critical town voices while you were in the game. You told me you’d try your best, and you did better than that.

Somehow the developing conflict across the northern California wastes had left the primitive village of Arroyo untouched for all this time. It was a blessing given the other problems they already faced with drought and famine. They could only hope their Chosen was still out there making good on their pledge to return with the G.E.C.K. One villager had driven the rest to madness, however, with her constant insistence that the Chosen would fail. Their aunt Morlis had never liked that child, and nobody can be sure why. I suspect it was because her spirits were not in alignment with the Earth Mother, and that if she'd just partake in some of Hakunin's herbs she might finally chill the fuck out. She never did though. She wandered a bit too far from the village for the hunt recently and was ambushed by wasters from the west. They didn't even take anything from her; they just murdered her and left her to rot. The Chosen One had better hurry.

Image

Some of Fallout 2's constant assault of dopey humor has inevitably become dated. It was a game of its time, and political jokes of 1998 are just not going to resonate with younger video/computer game audiences of 2021. I am barely old enough myself to get the joke sometimes. In the case of Daniel Bird, Vice President of the United States at the Enclave oil rig, the joke is not remotely subtle. He can be seen in his office working hard to learn how to spell words such as "potato". This is directly extracted from the misadventures of Vice President Dan Quayle of the Bush Sr. administration, famed utterer of nonsense and misspeller of "potato". Daniel Bird. Dan Quayle. Get it? :goofp:

???

Day 7 is underway. You have 48 hours to place your votes.

Also, you have picked up a new radio signal emitting a broadcast:

A report from the EPI Institute:

Alison: Confirmed Slaver. Must eliminate. 100%

Grogu: Possible religious nut. Possible Enclave. Upon review of the Hubologists, we have determined that Grogu can only truly be AHS-7 or The Enlightened One. Vikki Goldman is deceased, and AHS-9 and Juan Cruz would have produced nightly observable phenomenon. Both possibilities are viable fake identities Enclave can use to skate by undetected. Separate from this, Grogu’s activity level has been suppressed, averaging only 26.17 transmissions per day. We place the chance that Grogu serves Enclave at 70%

JackofHearts2005: We are repeatedly concerned about our inability to recall any positive momentum from this individual. We place the chance that JackofHearts2005 is aligned with Enclave at 78%.

Long Con: Claims to be an honest villager with no special skillset. We cannot confirm or deny that claim. We place the chance that Long Con is lying at 50%.
[10:22 AM]
Marmot: The report we acquired dated March 8, 2162 and timestamped at 0052 is a strong indication that Marmot is not in a league with Enclave. Separately, we understand that Marmot is a self-proclaimed expert tracker, but we are unable to deduce the source of those capabilities. We place the chance that Marmot provides support to Enclave at 39%.

MartinGG99: Alias “Louis.” This alias could reasonably be cover for Enclave. Apart from this, we observe that the analytics MartinGG99 has engaged in have been conducted in good faith. We place the chance that MartinGG99 is in the service of Enclave at 34%.

Seanzie: Likely an ally from Redding. We place the chance that this is false at 18%.
[10:22 AM]
Kylemii: Confirmed ally. 0%

sprityo: Under the alias “Spacedaisy,” allegedly received a communication from Enclave and the reaction to its contents and the responses others made seem genuine enough. We place the chance that this is an elaborate scheme between two members of the Enclave faction at 29%.

TonyStarkPrime: Enclave theatrics would have to be in play for us to regard TonyStarkPrime as an enemy. It is not impossible, but the leadership qualities and high activity cannot be denied. We place the chance that TonyStarkPrime is allied with Enclave at 32%.

Urist: Claimed to have protected our agent the Night there was no death. This is the most likely scenario given the logical targeting of our agent and given the number of protective abilities in play. We place the chance that Enclave opted to forgo murderous activity in order to facilitate an Enclave Urist sleeper agent at 22%.

Re: Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Mafia Game [Day 5]

Does procrastinated flavor-by-obligation still count as honorable host effort?

Spoiler: show
Image

Across the extensive Fallout lore, bridging the gaps between the Black Isle classics, the Obsidian tribute, and the Bethesda mediocrity, there exists only one true mainstay. Dogmeat appears in every Fallout game, and this tradition is one that I honestly find kind of dumb. Even in this, Fallout 2, my absolute favorite, it's comic self-reference that I think they could have done without. The real Dogmeat walked alongside the Vault Dweller of the very first Fallout, and all ensuing Dogs-meat can just be named in his honor. This one though, per the lore of the game, IS Dogmeat. At the Cafe of Broken Dreams where discarded Vault Dweller protagonists air their grievances with their idiot users, Dogmeat lies in wait for the Chosen One to appear in their grandsire's Vault 13 jumpsuit. Just as was the case in Fallout, keeping Dogmeat alive in Fallout 2 is just about as impossible as it proved to be in Fallout 2 Mafia.

Image

Tandi is another seminal character of the classic Fallout games. She is one of very few to appear in both of them. She lies at the center of one of the franchise's best-known setting elements, the New California Republic. Even the fans of the newer Fallout games will recognize this nation via Fallout: New Vegas, and that all begins with Tandi. The Vault Dweller meets her when she is just a young woman in a tiny village "Shady Sands" struggling for survival in the harsh wastes. The Chosen One meets her 80 years later, when that village has ascended to a dominant regional power thanks both to the Vault Dweller's inspiration and to Tandi's own leadership.

Image

The eternal isolationist stagnation of Vault City would prove to be their downfall, and it was not unexpected by those outside their walls. Despite their best efforts to cocoon the city safely from the influence of the mutated masses outside, they would eventually succumb to the tiniest of violations of that ideology. The citizens of Vault City, ever arrogant in their mock-utopia, had one miserable, fatal flaw: boredom. Without the ability to exercise their curiosity beyond the bounds of a single city, the introduction of a single interesting new "experience" proved irresistible. I couldn't say how the first canister of jet made it into the city, but it might as well have been a nuclear warhead. Once the local chemistry geeks got their hands on it and could synthesize more, the city fell into total addiction within weeks. Dr. Troy, head physician within Vault 8, devoted nearly all of his time recently to creating an antidote... but somehow in the effort he apparently broke a jet canister on the floor himself and inhaled the fumes. That was all it took to lose him too, and now he's dead from an overdose.

Image

The legend of Vault 13 was a rallying inspiration for the people of the NCR capital city. The mythical origin of the Vault Dweller who had saved them decades before was described by parents of young children with almost religious reverence. Everyone shared a common understanding about the vault though: that it did not exist. It was a tale woven for the sake of binding a people together with a notion of national history, but it wasn't a real place. But don't tell old Saltbeef that. The guy is still insisting to anyone who will listen that he's been there himself, that he saw the damned vault door with his own eyes with that massive "13" emblazoned upon it like some overly literal cartoon rendering. It's a matter of time before someone finds him too annoying to live.

There are no new game events depicted in this post. It's just flavor associated with all deaths not yet written.

@sprityo is replacing @Spacedaisy. You may still vote for this slot if you wish by voting the Spacedaisy space in the poll. You can call your vote in the thread with either "sprityo" or "Spacedaisy" or a portmanteau if you're feeling saucy.

Re: Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Mafia Game [Night 3]

Flavor text arrives slowly by way of wasteland couriers.

Image

She was one of the first to set the trend. Now in her wake, numerous more New Reno celebrities have flocked to the San Francisco bay to dedicate themselves fully to the Hub. With her neurodynes fully purified, she and her former pornographic playmate Juan Cruz would be able to lead the way in the Great Mission for Quetzel. At the rank of AHS-5 she could even enjoy some of the more exclusive benefits available at the compound and wield her new recruits as servants to whatever her whims decided. She needed her luxuries. Even as a celebrity in the service of the Star Father, she was still a celebrity, and she would suffer nobody treating her like the idiots walking through the force walls nowadays.

Well anyway, she's dead now. One of those Shi agents from the Imperial city at San Fran probably capped her. It's a wonder these people have been in the same city this long without completely destroying each other.

Image

She'd laid dormant, quiet, and waiting for over a century. The United States of America, land of the Lady Liberty, land of the free and home of the brave, had not gone forever into the cold dark night of atomic devastation. She lived on in secret, centrally commanded from the Poseidon Oil Rig in the central Pacific that had been the cause of much of the initial conflict with the Chinese in the mid-to-late 21st century. Through their elite and advanced military force known as the "Enclave", they gradually forged their way back into the mainland consciousness... though only barely. Most of the disgusting mutants populating the countryside were unaware of their presence or even that their technological prowess was possible. The fledging Brotherhood of Steel had reigned for decades there on far inferior outfits,. The time was near to put an end to the infestation of genetically near-but-non-human "peoples" of the wasteland. Sitting President Dick Richardson held the terrible responsibility of guiding his vulnerable, unmuted human population through life off-land and clearing the way for their safe return. Thankfully he had the smartest minds in America putting a plan into action that would not only achieve this incredible ambition, but would do so at no threat at all to American citizens. All it would take was a modified strain of the forced evolutionary virus and some convenient atmospheric guidance from the jet streams.

So it was an utter shock to the American people when their champion was found dead, seemingly injected with a massive overdose of hypodermic super-stimpacks, as though someone had forcibly applied them while the President slept. He succumbed quietly and peacefully, but the same peace was unlikely to exist for those who had relied on him for their salvation.
