Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [GAME OVER]

I have thoughts:

As others have said, some sort of software that keeps track of post counts per phase makes a game like this much easier for everyone involved.
Lack of such software is the reason I did not lift the post cap in the final hour of phases. I agree that that would have been preferable, but trying to keep track of everything with that mechanic in place would have been a nightmare. That was my thinking, at least.
A nice round number would probably be easier if we all are responsible for keeping track of our own post counts. I had no idea what number to set it at. I only registered one occasion on which a player hit their cap this game.

With regards to balance and setup and everything, it is difficult for me to gauge how well this game worked for a couple of reasons:
1) As I just said, there was only one occasion of a player hitting the 45-post limit in a phase. There were plenty more occasions where players came close to the limit, but even more where players did not end up near 40 posts. A few of you remarked that, without a system to keep track of posts automatically, the safest way to avoid violations was to simply stay far away from the cap. That was an unintended aspect of the setup that served to dampen conversation a little more than expected (like I said a few times before, the intention of this game was not to silence players, but to facilitate a more manageable game environment for everyone). I think it also hurt this game a little that another Full Game started up right around the same time as this one with many players double dipping in both games. The game without post restrictions is obviously going to receive more attention.
2) Town received absolutely nothing from their roles. Maybe that means they should have been given more role advantages. Or maybe it was just awful luck: The watcher and tracker, which were supposed to be the two most advantageous roles in the game, were both dead before Night 2. The doctor died quickly after that. The sane cop’s first target died on the same night she investigated him. The insane cop got a guilty read on his only shot of the game. The dual cop mechanic is just one that I’ve always been interested in and thought it could serve as an advantage in this setup if things went right for town. They did not. (That should not take away from the Mafia team’s performance. They were actively aware of the roles and all their potential uses and locations throughout the game.)

So I guess if we’re going to run more light games in the future, we’d want to focus on making the post cap more visible to players in real time so that they can easily assess when they’re likely to bump up against it. Balancing games like this is still a bit of a mystery to me. The setup should favor town slightly, but not too much. This was a single game in which the mafia caught more breaks than the town, but on paper the opposite could have been true.

sprityo wrote: Tue Aug 06, 2019 11:41 pm Does this mean I’m Warden Golden forever now? :grin:
Yes.

Fun fact: I named that role after the Warden role in Turf Wars. Everyone suspected that [mention]Golden[/mention] had the role for the longest time and so “Golden is the Warden” became a popular refrain. Meanwhile he and I were civilian BTSC partners and I was onto Epi as the true warden from like Day 2 on.

Also no one seemed to comment on the fact that I literally named a role after Long Con.

We had role cooped Nova and figured out who Mac was.

That left a vig and a joat (with a protection and double vote) as the powers that could stop us.

Dom would have shot Mac if he was the vig or maybe voted Mac if he was the joat.

Sig was basically inactive.

Between you and Sabie, figured you’d be harder to lynch and more likely to be holding the double vote for lylo.

Figured I’d already be dead if you were the vig tbh. :phew:
Live and learn. Next time I will do it. But seriously you guys did a great job.
vig is my least favorite town role to hold for the exact reasons you held onto your shot. It feels selfish to take matters entirely into your own hands like that unless you’re 99% certain about your shot.

Dom was the Odd-night cop and was insane (making sabie the sane cop).
nova was the voyeur
sig was the jack of all trades.

jack was the ninja
rej was the strongman/roleblocker

Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [DAY 5]

Night 5

It was over before it began. For one bright shining moment the inmates thought they would be the first ever to break free from Sockville's walls. But the Warden and his men systematically rooted them out, one by one, until there was nobody left. Any thought of escape was buried in fear and anxiety. Too many of their brothers had been displayed, bloodied and bruised in their cells or in the yard, a clear show of power by the Warden's goons. Maybe that was a better fate than wasting away behind bars anyway, in this infernal hell. But for the Warden it was a clean victory, a reaffirmation of his power. That Warden of the Year plaque was his for sure this time.

sabie12 has been killed. She was Danny Tightpants, even night cop.

Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [DAY 5]

Day 5

By now the Warden and his men had got the prisoners so paranoid that they were too busy fighting among themselves to resist their oppression. If the dream of freedom, fresh hair, and a new start was not completely dead by now, it was very nearly there. Any cracks in the Warden's stranglehold over Sockville had been patched in recent weeks. It was no thing at all for his guards to rough up Danny Peanuts in his cell. They didn't even bother to make it look like an accident. It didn't matter at this point.

Macdougall has been lynched. He was Danny Peanuts, civilian Mason.

Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [DAY 5]

Day 5

Nobody was prepared for quite so strong a show of force from the Warden and his men. Once they got their claws in, they weren't going to let go. Life in the slammer was growing bleaker by the day, and it was an eerie sign that morning when the day started with one conspicuously empty cell. It was assuredly occupied the day before, but today there was absolutely no sign of life whatsoever. It was as if no one had ever been there at all. What were the inmates to do in the face of such total obliteration?

juliets has been killed. She was ???

Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [DAY 4]

Day 4

The Warden was growing in confidence every day. Order, he felt, was being restored to his kingdom, one lowlife at a time. The unrest among the inmates was growing, and it was becoming easier to spot the ones nervous ones, those who had something to hide. He didn't even bother to make Johnny Tightlips' death look like an accident. Butchered in his own cell by some nameless guard. Maximum security indeed.

Long Con has been lynched. He was Johnny Tightlips, civilian jailkeeper.

The guards had noticed something was up with Mike for a while now. He always seemed a little jumpy, but lately he was scared of his own shadow's shadow. It was obvious he was hiding something. Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [NIGHT 2]

Day 3

"You're sure?"
I'm sure," Richie nodded.
He knew the Warden trusted him, but it was far too clear that he did not respect his so-called "informant." That's not the word Richie used to describe himself: he was a snitch, a rat. That's what a man like him is called on the inside, so why should he make believe otherwise? He made a deal to make his own life easier and he was committed to it. And that is why he was almost a little excited, if he pushed his conscience far enough out of sight, to bring this particular update to his boss.

Richie had found the leader of the jailbreak crew. The reward for this information would be hefty for sure. Could he even get that parole hearing pushed forward...

The Warden did not care about Richard's fate at this moment. He smelled blood and he was hungry. He whispered the order to one of his guards, but even the hushed tone could not conceal his wild excitement over the removal of the troublesome Fitzroy from his prison.

Epignosis has been killed. He was Seamus Fitzroy, civilian doctor.

Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [DAY 2]

Night 1

A reliable informant was hard to come by, but the Warden trusted Richie's intel more than anything else these days. As far as the Warden could tell, his cover had not been blown and his position was uncompromised. So when word got back to him that the crook known as Jimmy Hotfingers was one of the villains spearheading the jailbreak conspiracy, it was an easy enough task for the Warden's men to stage an accident in his cell that night.

Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [NIGHT 1]

Day 1

The Warden's men were on the hunt, but all that did was drive the breakout crew further underground. They'd already taken extreme caution not to let anything slip, but today all communication was severed. A slight nod of the head or a wave of the hand was all anyone, even the most perceptive observer, could pick up. The inmates wanted to be sure that the Warden's goons would have nothing to report back at the end of the day.

There was, of course, more to worry about than just the uniformed guard. The crew had long suspected that the Warden would try to place a rat in their midst. The first name on everyone's list was Charlie. Having a wildcard like him in the gang was of no benefit to anyone: he was liable to cause more harm than good even if he was on their side, and, if we're being honest, there was only a 50/50 shot at that to begin with. Hell, a guy like Charlie was viable to get got for any number of reasons, so it's not like it would even trip any alarms to take him out that day. That's why it came as no surprise to anyone when Charlie's body was found outside the showers with a shiv in his gut. But he wasn't the rat they were looking for.

TonyStarkPrime has been lynched. He was Charlie Hustle, civilian redirector.

Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [DAY 0]

Day 0: Cracks in the Walls

"We need to remind them who's in charge."

The Warden spoke straight through his guards as though his words carried with them the authority of the universe itself. This was his domain, after all, his kingdom. So what if his subjects were criminals and lowlifes? If anything that just meant his rule needed to be all the more strong, more infallible. It had fallen to him to bring order to a population of the most heinous and sinister men in the greater Sockville Metropolitan area.

But now word had got back to him that a small group of inmates were mere days away from carrying out a mass jailbreak scheme of theirs. Richie, his informant, broke the news to him, and now the Warden felt threatened. Insecurity began to set in; how could an insecure man run a prison? The Warden didn't have time to ruminate over the cracks in his fragile ego. Now was the time for action, for a show of strength and a return to order. That started with him.

Sgt. Harrison understood his task. The rest of the guards were a bunch of hired goons, but Harrison possessed at least half a brain in the Warden's estimation. He trusted him to strike down the breakout before any of those degenerates could get a whiff of freedom.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It looked like business as usual in the yard at Sockville Penitentiary that afternoon, but beneath the surface was a palpable tension to those in the know. The guards were on edge but trying not to look it, while a small band of inmates made sure not to let it slip that they knew the secret those guards were after...
Re: Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [DAY 0]
Mechanics
-Day phases will be 48 hours. Night phases will be 24 hours.
-The game thread will be locked during Night phases.
-All votes will be changeable.
-Plurality voting; the player with the most votes at the end of the Day is lynched.
Rules
-As this is an open setup, all roleclaiming and info-dumping is prohibited.
-Do not look for or attempt to exploit loopholes ("angle-shooting").
-Any questions about the game, mechanics, rules, etc. should be directed to the host IN PRIVATE.
-As stipulated above, players are restricted to 45 posts per phase unless specifically instructed otherwise. More details on this can be found at the top of the first post.
-Have fun and be respectful. This is a fun game, but sometimes emotions get involved. Remember that the Mod on Duty is always available if you have any grievances during the game.
-I will always look for replacements before modkills in the event of inactivity. Players will be replaced in the order that they request replacements, or based on the severity of their inactivity. Replacement priority has absolutely nothing to do with a player's role or alignment. Modkills are always a last resort.
-This is the host color. Try not to use it.
-Non-players should post in NP blue and should refrain from on-topic discussion. Note how ever so slightly different from the host color it is.
-Dead players should keep their posts in dead red and should avoid on-topic contributions.
-Off-topic content by active players should be in OT green.
Escape From Sockville Penitentiary [GAME OVER]
Escape From Sockville Penitentiary
16 players
GAME TYPE: Light Game
Important Gameplay/Posting Rules (PLEASE READ):
This is a Light Game. That means that all players have a limit on how many times they are allowed to post during each phase. This is otherwise a straightforward mafia game.
  • The general post limit will be 45 posts per phase. No player should exceed their 45-post limit during any Day phase unless given explicit permission to do so.
  • In the event that a player exceeds their allowed post-limit during any phase:
    • First violation - Player receives 1 additional vote in the poll the following day for every 5 posts above their limit, starting with the first extra post.
    • Second violation - Player is silenced for the first 24 hours of the following Day and has their post limit cut in half, in addition to receiving extra votes.
    • Third violation - Player is modkilled.
The Game
In the maximum security wing of Sockville Penitentiary there's a group of restless inmates that have had enough with the Warden's tyrannical control over their lives on here. Are they reformed? Well, what does that word even mean anyway? They'll be the first to tell you that words like that lose all meaning on the inside. All they know is this ain't the life they want, and if they can get out they'll be sure as hell to keep as much distance between themselves and any prison cell as they possibly can. That's for damn sure.
Word of a breakout conspiracy has made it back to the Warden and his staff -- you didn't think the warden would let those degenerates run free without eyes and ears on the ground, did you? If there's one thing the Warden can't tolerate it's a bruise to his ego. He has made it his personal goal to root out and snuff the breakout attempt before anyone slip through his grasp. The only problem is he's got no clue who's involved, who the ringleaders are, or what the plan is. Can he crack down before the inmates escape, or will they achieve their hard earned freedom after all?
Roles
Inmates (Town) (13):
  • Eagle Eyes Phil* - Former head of security for one of the largest gangs in the metropolitan area, Phil knows how to spot a rat. On odd nights, he can check a player's alignment.
  • Danny Tightpants* - No one's brave enough to ask Daniel how he got his nickname, and frankly no one wants to know. All they need to know is that he's on their side; and he feels the same about them. On even nights, he can check a player's alignment.
  • Sammy the Lookout - Sammy's always known how to track his targets without leaving a trace, and things are no different on the inside. Three times during the game at night, Sammy can track a player to find out who, if anyone, they targeted that night.
  • Jimmy Hot Fingers - If you need something done, Jimmy Hot Fingers is the man for you. No one knows quite what he's up to, but you better believe he's up to something. Two times during the game at night Jimmy can watch a player to learn who, if anyone, targeted them that night.
  • Peepin' Tom - Poor Tom couldn't resist living up to his namesake, and those old habits have landed him in Sockville. But he's not without his uses on the inside! Three times during the game, Tom can target a player to learn what actions were performed on them, but not who performed those actions.
  • Charlie Hustle - Every gang needs a wildcard! It helps to thwart the Warden's plans if not even the rest of the breakout crew knows for sure what's going on, and that's where Charlie comes into play. Twice during the game, Charlie can target two players, redirecting all night actions from one target to the other and vice versa.
  • Lonnie the Conman - Lonnie's the best conman in the game, to the extent that most folks just assume he got himself locked up on purpose. But now he's trying to help spring his fellow inmates, and he does so with his trademark deft touch. Each day, Lonnie can distract the guards, freeing up one other player to exceed the standard 45-post limit for the phase. *secrets*
  • Prison Mike - Mike's not cut out for prison. He thought it would be a step up from his demeaning 9-5 office job, but boy was he wrong. His only solace is the friend he made in his cellmate, Danny Peanuts. Mike shares BTSC with Danny throughout the game.
  • Danny Peanuts - Danny's a good guy at heart. He knows he's made mistakes, but he thinks he's ready to start a new life on the outside. He's included his cellmate Mike in the breakout scheme out of pity, but all he can really do is make sure Mike doesn't crack and squeal to the Warden. Danny shares BTSC with Prison Mike throughout the game.
  • Seamus Fitzroy - The ringleader of the whole operation, and the man with all the connections. Two times during the game, Seamus can have a player of his choice transferred to the infirmary for a night, protecting them from fatal night actions. In addition, *secrets*
  • Hairpin Pete - Pete's a bit of a loose trigger, but everyone was too afraid to exclude him from the plot once he found out about it. Pete's liable to fly off the handle at any moment, though. Once during the game, he can nightkill a player of his choice.
  • Tricky Jack - Jack's no expert at anything in particular, but he knows how to be useful in a number of ways. Jack has three 1-shot abilities to be used on any separate night phases during the game. They are: 1-shot double vote, 1-shot protection, 1-shot track/watch (player decides which is used).
  • Johnny Tightlips - Ain't nobody squealing on Johnny's watch, that's for sure. Twice during the game, Johnny can force one player to stay in his cell with him at night. This will both roleblock and protect that player.
*At the beginning of the game, one cop will be randomly selected to become insane. The other will be sane. Players will not be alerted to their sanities.
Prison Guard (Mafia) (3):
  • Snitching Richie - The Warden's man on the inside. Richie reports back to the Warden with any information he can glean from his fellow inmates. Twice during the game, he can perform an undetectable game at the Warden's behest. Alternatively, he can forego one of these untraceable kills to learn a specific player's role.
  • Sgt. Harrison - The Warden's second in command and head of the prison guard, no one power trips quite like Sgt. Harrison. Once during the game, Harrison can show his power by taking out a player regardless of any protective actions which might be used on them that night. Twice during the game, Harrison can toss a prisoner's cell at night, preventing them from performing any night actions.
  • Warden Golden - Let no one forget that Sockville Penitentiary is Warden Golden's domain. The inmates may think they run this place, but they're dead wrong. Once during the game, the Warden can dispose of a player without a trace. No role will be displayed upon this player's death. In addition, *secrets*
