Re: Radiohead Mafia [GAME OVER]

I went a little overboard and made banners for each winning album. The original idea was that everyone could have a different banner based on their role, but y'all can also just pick whichever one you want. It's all groovy. The world is your oyster. Enjoy, and thanks for the game.

Re: Radiohead Mafia [GAME OVER]

nutella, dyachei/logic, and sprityo's roles all had built-in fake claims.
All non-civilian players could have elected to say they were unable to claim. I was surprised that none of them took that route.

Re: Radiohead Mafia [GAME OVER]

I never posted all the unrevealed info in this thread.

nutella's full rolecard:
Spoiler: show

You are A Wolf At the Door
Album: Hail to the Thief

‘Walking like giant cranes and with my X-ray eyes I strip you naked, in a tight little world and are you on the list?’
Each Night you may submit up to 3 guesses to match a player with a specific role/song. If you correctly identify a player’s role, they are added to your list. If you submit 3 incorrect guesses in one Night, you lose the ability to guess the following Night. Guesses do not count as Night actions: they are unblockable and cannot be detected.

'I keep the wolf from the door but he calls me up, calls me on the phone, tells me all the ways that he's gonna mess me up.'
Each Night you may roleblock one player on your list. Each night you may reduce the vote of one player on your list to 0 for the following Day.
You may not target the same player twice in one night, or twice in a row with the same ability. If you have only one player on your list, you must alternate between the abilities until a second player is added.
Once during the game, your team can perform an additional unblockable nightkill against a player on your list. As this is a team ability, you do not need to be alive for this action to be carried out. A member of your team must be assigned to carry out the kill, however.
If a member of your team is eliminated during the Day, only able to submit up to one guess.
If you have no players on your list at any time, you can protect a player of your choice at night.

You are Mafia. Your teammates are Justplayingitcool, dyachei, Samusamu, and sprityo. You win when your team achieves parity.
Parts of it were kept secret because I did not want town to have that much information about what the mafia team's capabilities were.

And the roles which were restricted from claiming:
Mr Magpie (SPF)
Spoiler: show

You are Morning Mr Magpie
Album: The King of Limbs

‘You’ve got some nerve coming here.’
Each Night you will randomly target a player (you do not choose your target). Your target will be given the option to wish you a Good Morning in the thread the ensuing Day.

'Now you've stolen all the magic.'
If your target wishes you a Good Morning, they will have one vote subtracted from their total in the poll that Day. However, if you vote for them that Day then your vote will be doubled.
If they do not wish you a Good Morning, you will receive a role check on them the ensuing Night.

Note that the host will never inform you of your target under any circumstances, including upon receiving a role check. Your targets may not reveal themselves in any way other than by wishing you a Good Morning and they will not know the consequences of their decision. It is up to you to locate your target if they do identify themselves.
You cannot roleclaim.

You are a Civilian. You win when all threats are eliminated.
Restricted because allowing this role to claim would make it very easy to abuse, and for the player to confirm themselves and their targets as whatever roles they had. This is also why their targets could not make any mention of it other than by responding to the direct prompt. This was one of three roles (along with Herm and sometimes Wilgy) that had the potential to randomly target each night, which was put in as slight deterrent against mass claiming: having people randomly targeting at night makes trackers/watchers/voyeurs more vulnerable to confusing results. I wanted that.

Reckoner (Mac)
Spoiler: show

You are Reckoner.
Album: In Rainbows

'Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore.’
If a civilian is eliminated during the Day, you will be informed of any actions performed on you during the ensuing Night phase. If a non-civilian is eliminated, you can target another player with this ability.
You cannot roleclaim.

You are a Civilian. You win when all threats are eliminated.
Restricted because just fuck Mac in particular tbh, honestly no real reason other than to slightly nerf the town's power arsenal. Roles that gather information but can't claim or reveal that information force players to make interesting strategic descisions. This role had nothing mechanical in it that would have made it overpowered if it could claim.

Knives Out (Oddmerta)
Spoiler: show

You are Knives Out.
Album: Amnesiac

'So knives out, catch the mouse, don’t look down, shove it in your mouth.’
Once during the game, you can trigger a double-voting phase; everybody will be able to vote for two players in the poll that Day. This will still only result in one player being eliminated that day.
If a non-civilian role is eliminated on this day, the thread will remain open for the duration of the ensuing night.
If a civilian is eliminated, you will receive a 1-shot alignment check to be used that night on a player of your choice.
You cannot roleclaim.

You are a Civilian. You win when all threats are eliminated.
Restricted because the double-voting phase is a very public, very conspicuous action. Being able to take credit for it and then potentially also getting an alignment check out of it as a mechanically-confirmed player (even if the alignment of this role is not necessarily mechanically confirmed) is overpowered.

Everything In Its Right Place (Hally)
Spoiler: show

You are Everything In Its Right Place.
Album: Kid A

'Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon.’
Each Night you can watch a player of your choice to find out who, if anyone, targets them that Night. You cannot roleclaim.

You are a Civilian. You win when all threats are eliminated.
Restricted because a watcher that can target every night and then dump all its information is stupidly overpowered.

Re: Radiohead Mafia [GAME OVER]

I said most of this in spec chat, but I'll put it here now as well.

RE: the setup -
The Syndicate has traditionally favored games with no infodumping/roleclaiming at all. I like playing this way. Many of the longtime regulars like playing this way too, I think. That's not to say it's the only way we like to play, but it's a fun variant to have.
But, as we've opened up and had more and more experienced players come in from elsewhere, it's become obvious that "no roleclaiming" is not a rule that most people are comfortable with. Playing in and hosting games with this rule when people do not like it or feel comfortable with it is a headache.

This setup was my attempt to design a game somewhere in the middle of "no roleclaiming at all" and "role madness where everybody claims and solves off mechanics." The biggest flaw in the design is that I put too much of the anti-town power in one role, and you jerks made it the very first role to be eliminated. :p I do not like soup kills, so I was never going to include anything like that in this game (that's too much power, and too difficult to balance, and far too heavy of a deterrent against claiming). I wanted there to be a real claim deterrent, but I did not want it to be overwhelming. I also didn't want it to be possible for the mafia team to become overpowered by simply getting lucky and correctly guessing a few roles at random.
The Rogue was designed to be more of a threat (to each faction) in a game that was less one-sided than this one ended up being (3 dead mafia by the end of Night 2 is not something I anticipated. Above all else, town just played great in this game). It ended up being mostly passive in this game. I could have built in more aggressive mechanics/abilities for it. Originally I had it as a limited shot serial killer, but that felt like it could have swung the balance of the game in either direction too easily.

For much of the game I felt like the setup was town-sided. I still feel as though that was the case, although not by as much as I feared at the time. This game was never designed for a mass claim: both in the sense that the anti-town roles could directly benefit from that, and because there were just so many roles doing things every night that it would not ever be clear what was going on (and I think we definitely saw the latter play out). A couple small tweaks to one or two town roles, and a more even distribution of the powers across the mafia team's roles could have solved these problems.

I'm saying all of this in case anyone here wants to attempt to design a game along these lines in the future. The key takeaway for me is that the mafia team's claim-deterring powers need to be distributed more evenly and not so heavily invested in any single role. I'd be interested in feedback from others as well.

I hope everyone enjoyed the game as best they could.

Long Con wrote: Tue Sep 22, 2020 12:34 pm So how did Poison get all the roles?
Well, some people just claimed to her face. That helped. She also had a condition where she received a copy of a role card every night as long as she did not receive a vote the day before. She received 1 vote all game, on Day 8. By that point everyone had claimed and she had a lot of the roles stockpiled.

My favorite moment was when she got the role card for There There and knew the last mafia role was a tracker, but didn’t say a word about it in here as far as I could tell.

Sorry for those last few phases. Town had essentially locked up the win in 99.9% of possible realities, but Poison's role was unresolved.

Also big news that probably only I was excited about all game long! This is the second biggest game in Syndicate history in terms of post count. Only the monstrosity known as Inception is bigger. Way to go, and thank you for making it memorable.

I'll have more to say about the game and my setup later. It was as experimental as I'll ever get and there were definite flaws. But my first goal any time I host a game is for the players to have fun playing it. I hope that that was the case for everyone.

On 3 separate Nights, you can target a player and they will be protected from all impediments including fatal actions. However, any report they would have received that Night is delayed until the end of the following Day phase.

You are a Civilian. You win when all threats are eliminated.

It is Night 6. Players have 23 hours to submit night actions.

Re: Radiohead Mafia [DAY 5]

A question has been asked about the role Nude:
Spoiler: show
‘Don’t get any big ideas. They’re not gonna happen.’
On 4 separate Nights, you can receive a full copy of the rolecard of a role of your choice, but you will not be told which player has this role.
Additionally you inherit a nightly roleblock ability if A Wolf at the Door dies before you.
The first of these two abilities specifically does not target players and thus does not count as a visit/target to detection roles.

Roles that are x-shot will be notified of a roleblock if and when they would have otherwise exhausted their shots.

Album: OK Computer

'You look so tired and unhappy. Bring down the government. They don’t speak for us.’
If you do not receive any votes during the Day, you will self-watch the ensuing Night; you will be informed of any players targeting you.
If you do receive votes, you will passively receive a random report from elsewhere in the Night.
If a non-civilian is eliminated and you voted for them, you will receive a random 1-shot ability to be used that Night instead of your other abilities.

You are a Civilian. You win when all threats are eliminated.

It is Day 6. The majority of players voted in favor of shortening Day phases. Players will have 24 hours to eliminate somebody.

Players may now vote (privately) on whether they would like to shorten Day phases to 24 hours, or stay at the current 48/24 format. Please DO NOT discuss this vote in the thread. Simply PM me with your preference. If a majority favor a change, we will switch to a 24/24 format for the remainder of the game.

'And now I'll set you free.'

Lotus Flower
Album: The King of Limbs

'Slowly we unfurl as lotus flowers.’
Each Night you will identify a Radiohead album. If there is a song from that album associated with a non-civilian role in the game, you will be given a glimpse of that song’s role card. There is no guarantee that you will receive a complete role card, but you will never receive a false role. In the event that an album features multiple non-civilian songs, you will only receive a report from one song/role at a time.
If there is no non-civilian role associated with that album, a random civilian role from that album (if there are any) will be notified of your search (you will not be identified in this message.)
If you do not receive a vote in the final poll on Day 1, you gain a bulletproof vest for Night 1 only.
Upon your death, you may reveal the description of a mafia role of your choice.

You are a Civilian. You win when all threats are eliminated.

It is Night 4. Players have 24 hours to submit their night actions.
Note: The start of the next Day phase may be delayed ~1 hour.

You may assume an ability from a dead role each Night. You may only access each role once, and may only access one ability from roles featuring multiple abilities.
Upon your death, you may select a player. That player will have a 50% chance of receiving a 1-shot version of your role.

(Civilian)

'One day I am going to grow wings, a chemical reaction, hysterical and useless.’
Your ability is determined by the ratio of civilian to non-civilian roles alive at the start of each Night:
50-59.9% civilian roles: 1-shot bulletproof
60-69.9%: Motion detector
70-79.9%: Roleblocker
80%+: Doublevoter
You will be informed of your ability at the start of each Night phase.

Re: Radiohead Mafia [DAY 3]

Additionally, on two separate nights, you can target a player to falsify any reports they might receive. You may not target the same player twice with this ability.
I have been asked to clarify this role ability belonging to Burn the Witch (sprityo):
Falsified reports are randomized (by the Host) according to the action(s) and target(s) of the targeted player. I cannot specify any further than that.

Re: Radiohead Mafia [DAY 3]

Answering several privately asked questions all at once:

A roleblocked player does not perform any action and would not appear as performing an action as part of any reports.

A player will only be notified of a roleblock against them if they were supposed to have received a report that same night. Players performing a roleblock are not informed whether or not their action was successful.

I am not currently aware of any Host errors occurring on Night 2.
