Apologies if this has already been asked and answered:
What is something you wish you had known before becoming a new parent?

2. What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?
3. Would you rather fight 3 marmot-sized humans or 1 human-sized marmot?
4. Shower in the morning or night?
5. If someone offered you $5 million to let a wild bat bite you, and you weren’t allowed to treat it, would you take the gamble?

so hi i’m trochilidae but you can call me any form of that you like, it’s a fun word to shorten
i’m a 20 year old trans guy (most of the time, it’s complicated) who’s been playing mafia on and off for about two years!

my homesite is originally fol, and i’ve played on MU a fair bit too, but i’ve been wanting to expand my communities recently and i’m always looking to improve and learn more
id absolutely love to play a few games here once i learn the site setup and culture a bit more!

so yeah
that’s me
Welcome!

What’s your favorite season?
What is your favorite animal that you wish you could pet RIGHT NOW?
Do you play any boardgames? Video games? If so, which?
Anywhere you’ve always wanted to visit?

“mafia is so much effort sometimes and it’s painful to go iso-diving intensely when you’re not really in the mood but know you have to
and then i catch myself thinking about the game constantly and keep having to take breaks at work because i had another thought and it lives in my mind rent free nonstop until the game is over”
Holy shit are you me

So you say you are trans ‘most’ of the time- what’s your backstory here if you wouldn’t mind me asking?
favorite season is winter! i live in such a hot area that’s it’s nice to finally get some nicer weather

i wish i could pet specifically a baby ocelot which i call ocelittles
i love ocelots so much it’s unreal
they’re beautiful little creatures

so i’m actually disabled (mild ataxic cerebral palsy) which tldr means my fine motor skills, balance, and muscle tone are absolutely shit and as such i suck at most video games
but i do have a special fondness for skyrim because my dad always used to play it with me and we could add enough mods that my motor skills weren’t that much of an issue

and honestly i’ve always wanted to go somewhere i can see the northern lights
to be somewhere that cold, snowy, and special and to look up and see these shining neon ribbons in the sky
it sounds like a dream come true

and okay here’s where the afterlife question comes in, and the trans most of the time question
it’s common knowledge on my homesite, and some people on MU know as well but i have DID, more specifically OSDD-1b which is the same condition, but with less severe amnesia (and before anyone says anything yes i sadly, *actually* have the condition, i’m working with a therapist for it, it’s not by any means all sunshine and rainbows and imaginary friends in your head it’s a horrible debilitating condition that affects my entire life) soapbox over but i DESPISE the fact that my serious mental condition has become a tiktok trend as you can tell
there are technically 4 “people” that make up Trochilidae, i’m just the one most often around so to speak, and i am a trans man (thus me being a trans man *most* of the time

as for the afterlife…i believe in Something but i don’t know what it might be or look like
i know that part of me doesn’t though which sent me into a massive existential crisis about what happens when i die, if my soul is split apart along those lines, if it would let me finally have peace or be eternally painful and isolating, etc
scary shit to think about for me

(and yes this condition throws a curveball playing mafia but i just think of it as being a hydra, a lot of the times i’m called an illegal hydra lmao)
i function as best i can and there are obviously tonal differences when i play, but i make up for this by trying to make details notes so whenever a different trochi takes the wheel they’re never out of the loop
i’m very open to questions about this ftr
This is SO interesting! Thank you for sharing that.

Thanks for putting that into words. I can’t begin to try and relate. And I’m pretty ignorant in the sense that I haven’t knowingly or personally met anyone with any of your conditions IRL.

I’d like to play with you one of these days to get a sense of this illegahydra

Also I just talked with my mom and she wants to make it up north this year to catch the northern lights. What I told her- if you are in an area that you can successfully see it, that’s probably also all you’ll be doing since it’ll be so dark most the time to do anything else productive lol

I wonder if this implies you like randomness more than skill? (That's what i like.)
I always here about love letter. Probably should go ahead and buy it. My problem is I'm a kickstarter junkie. Probably have backed about 50 games and only have played half.
I like both to change it up- I feel like if I play two games of Castles of Burgundy, my mind will explode and I need some ameritrash game to clear the cobwebs like Betrayal at House on the Hill, which is a terribly unbalanced game but if you go into with the idea of it being a journey and not get caught up on the whole winning thing, it’s a great time with the right people.

Here’s the thing with love letter- it’s a basic enough game that you don’t even need to buy the game and can play with just a normal deck of cards. All you’ll need is a reference sheet when you’re starting out.

Here, I’ll explain what I do.
From a deck, grab the Ace, King & Queen of hearts.
Grab both Red Jacks, 4’s, 3’s and 2’s. Grab 5 random number cards. You should have 16 total cards.
Cards are ranked on a scale from 1-8. Here’s the reference sheet to write out:
  • Black cards = Guard, Rank 1 > When played, pick a player and guess a card type other than Guard. If correct, that player is eliminated.
  • Red 2’s = Priest, Rank 2 > When played, pick a player. They must privately show you their card.
  • Red 3’s = Baron, Rank 3 > pick a player. Both of you reveal the card in your hand. The lower rank is eliminated (*ties resolved by cumulative points of played cards in front of each player)
  • Red 4’s = Handmaiden, Rank 4 > you are unaffected by all players until your next turn.
  • Red Jacks = Prince, Rank 5 > you may force another player (or yourself) to discard their card and draw another
  • King of Hearts= King, Rank 6 > trade hands with another player
  • Queen of Hearts = Countess, Rank 7 > if holding the king or prince, this card must be played, otherwise it does nothing
  • Ace of Hearts = Princess, Rank 8 > if a player discards this card, they are eliminated

    Gameplay:
Each player starts with a card. On your turn, draw a card and play one of your 2 cards into a discard pile in front of you. If a player draws the last card of the deck, the game ends that turn and the non-eliminated player with the highest rank in hand wins. (Ties go to highest cumulative total in discard)

That’s it! Give it a try. 2 player works too

Do you ever watch tv/streaming services? If so, favorite shows up to 5:
>Favorite books:
Honestly, I haven’t been on a reading binge very recently, but my favorite series I’ve been involved with is The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson. Epic fantasy, he’s currently on book 4 of 5, 5th will come out in a couple years. Would highly recommend. fantastic world building, and what he lacks in realistic dialogue (I was reading and no lie I was like ‘is this guy Mormon or something? His dialogue is a little stilted when writing romance. Looked it up, he is Mormon. No offense if anyone is Mormon, just made me chuckle). Again, highly recommend.

I remember reading Executive Orders, written in 1998 talking of hijacking planes and an Ebola scare. When I read it, there was that worldwide Ebola scare and I was tripping out. Nice little political drama in the Jack Reacher series I think.

This is one of those questions that I know the answer to until you ask me.
In no particular order as I remember them:
-Whiplash- EXCELLENT movie
-Ex Machina
-LOTR all of ‘em
-Children of Men
-Ocean’s Eleven
-Being John Malkovich
-That was 8 I’m sorry

>Favorite shows
-Lost
-Survivor
-Dexter (haven’t started the new season)
-I’ve been liking The Boys.

Syn wrote: Thu Mar 17, 2022 5:22 pm Do you like to camp?
Yes! I can’t remember where I’ve answered this, but my wife introduced me to camping 5 years ago.
I hated the outdoors as a kid, and I think I only just became cognizant of why: I grew up in the South with muggy, buggy climates and no real challenge or views.
Then my wife had me do a 24 day backpacking trip in the Sierras on the John Muir Trail (~220 miles). It was grueling in parts but also the challenge brought us closer together and me closer to nature. It’s really cliche to see me type it out, but I really did connect with nature. I don’t mind sleeping in my own sweat and dirt for days on end. The natural world is so beautiful and now that I’ve seen the west coast, everything pales in comparison

We did the Wonderland trail around Mt. Rainier a couple years ago and that was also magnificent.

Best overall game that I feel good playing regardless of player count- tie between ‘Castles of Burgundy’ and ‘Great Western Trail’. I can’t recommend those 2 enough.

juliets wrote: Thu Mar 17, 2022 12:23 am @Scotty you're one of the most spontaneously funny people I've ever known. Do you perform comedy, like improv comedy maybe? Your quips come so fast I'm amazed.
Wow thanks juliets!

Not particularly. IRL I’m more self deprecating in public, which seems to brighten up the spirits of those around me. When I was younger I would often go out with my uncle to public places and we’d just feed off of each other and create banter in a running improv skit of sorts, which has helped me in todayland, and has kept me from turning into a frog.

More importantly tho, I’m in the performing arts and I like creating. My mind is always whirring..which is a blessing and a curse. This means I’m never bored because in the downtime I’m always crafting something in my head. But lately I’m also less grounded and up in the clouds in day to day life.

I have several friends that I think of as the funniest people I know. And they never show it, but they’re tormented inside based on BTSC. I think this is overgeneralizing but I feel those that constantly use humor in their everyday life are distracting from deep seated issues they’ve chosen to ignore. I’d like to think I don’t have those sort of issues IRL and have the awareness of not hiding behind the yuckyucks. Online I can have a degree of obscurity so I do tend to have more of a bizarro or biting humor all the time, if that makes sense?

I consider myself of the core view that women should all have the basic civil rights as men. And I feel it’s so important for every man to have a woman in their life that they care about and can better understand their viewpoints (that isn’t their mother). That’s how empathetic bonds form between the genders.
Women still get paid less for doing the same work. That ain’t cool. Every time a man catcalls or makes a patronizing remark, an angel loses their wings, as they say. There’s still so much work to be done.

Dunno if that makes me a feminist or not.

Syn wrote: Wed Mar 16, 2022 3:41 am Have you ever played any online video games?
The MMORPG I played for like 10 years through my childhood was Asheron’s Call. 12 year old me had many vassals and most of the time we would just hang out at my monarch’s mansion and talk about life. I think all of my friends were like 40. Kinda weird now that I think of it.

Nowadays I can’t play online games for fear that I’ll get lost in them. Played Path of Exile back in 2013 and would start questing at dinner time and I’d look back at the clock and it’d be 8 in the morning. I have no discipline for that shit and don’t need the ‘pull’ in my life any more. :sigh:

Pancakes, crepes, or waffles?
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and I could have it for every meal. Bacon egg and cheese bagel like I said earlier is my favorite.
But chocolate chip pancakes, some a salmon Benedict, some fresh berries.
Eggs in a hole, baked apple turnovers (it’s a breakfast thing), sausages, toast, bacon, hard boiled egg.

Pick any combination of the above.

Pancakes all the way. Waffles are just shittier pancakes. Crepes are also a food that exists.

I have terrible wide flat feet. Makes dancing difficult. Im a 12.5Wide. Always hard to find the right shoe size.

> Have you ever seen the Northern Lights?
Yep! I tried seeing them in Norway in the summer. Not a good time.
Finally saw them on a cruise up to Alaska. I dunno, it wasn’t as impressive as I was hoping. They were mostly imperceptible to the naked eye, but were vivid through a professional camera at like 2 in the morning.

> Would you rather live secluded from the rest of the world or close to relatives?
Oh, secluded for sure. My relatives are great to see every soooo often (some of them) but I don’t need to see them all that often. Like, I’ll go to a real fancy restaurant once a year. I only need to see my tornado incarnate great aunt once every decade.

Idk if your wife is into games but if she is there are some pretty decent modern split screen options
She’s not exactly a video gamer, but I wouldn’t mind pulling in some games for the switch like Overcooked. She’s not into the FPS or racing games really. Definitely not Rocket League.

I miss some good ole 4 player Perfect Dark or Goldeneye or Halo. Oh man, I used to be so good at sniping with a pistol in the original Halo. I’m too uncoordinated for those kinds games now tho :ninja:

Y know, I got into theater as a kid because I often felt like an oddball that didn’t fit in with the rest of my “normal” peers, so this tracks. I’ve never been incredibly self-reflective and it’s only dawning on me that performing gave me the outlet where I could feel the most personal and vulnerable. I’ve always been pretty in touch with my emotional side and that’s probably why.

I have a lot of friends that are struggling, and I think this industry both attracts those people with open arms and is a safe space for it too

Re: Interrogation Room - Scotty

Syn wrote: Mon Mar 14, 2022 11:47 pm What would you recommend someone check out if they visit New York City?
There’s something for everyone here, so unless there’s something specific, I know what I always used to recommend.
  • you simply must walk through Times Square. It’s a rite of passage if you’ve never done it before. Once you’ve done it once, and experienced the magic of it, you can safely avoid it like the plague like the rest of the locals. Don’t take pictures with the creepy Elmos and Spider-Man knockoffs.
  • if you want a good view from midtown, don’t do the Empire State Building. Go to Rockefeller Plaza. Better price, better view.
  • hit up One World Trade. Don’t need to say a lot more about this one. It’s very reflective and hits you like a ton of bricks. There’s a 9/11 Memorial and Museum that you should walk through too.
  • Walk around Central Park. Really anywhere you can enter, if you go far enough in, you can forget you’re even in a city. We explore the park almost every day and still find places we’ve never been to
  • Broadway show(s). I can give lots of recommendations on shows to see. Hamilton is a must. If you’ve already seen Hamilton, I’d recommend Come from Away. It should have won Best Musical but was overshadowed by the overrated Dear Evan Hansen (I’m not bitter). The most heart in a musical you’ll see. Wicked is a mainstay. Phantom, Chicago are just tired at this point. Hadestown won best musical last year- have a few friends in that one.
  • Lower East Side has a great nightlife bar scene, if you’re into that. Just wandering around the Bowery you’ll see many great locales
  • FOOD.
-Gotta hit up a Ray’s “Original” Pizza. There’s like 20 of them, and they all claim to the the original location. It doesn’t matter. Get a cheap slice and go to town, especially if you already had some beer.
-Chinatown is amazing. I used to recommend a few places I know of but I think all of them closed down during the pandemic, which is a right bummer. Still a lot of authentic cuisine strolling the streets.
Anyway, I’ve lived here since 2008 so if anyone is ever planning a trip, hit me up for recommendations

I always thought you as like 40. Huh.

Anyway, this is gonna sound like a kitschy answer but I always wanted to find my soulmate. And I did! And it is incredibly fulfilling. 10/10 would recommend. I try not to flaunt it or brag about it, however, because I engage with so many couples that any lay observer can see are not exactly compatible. It’s been 7 years knowing each other and I still feel like I’m in my honeymoon phase, so the answer is that has exceeded my expectations

I was pretty lazy. Even though I had a 4.0 average I never took any AP or advanced level classes in HS.
When I wasn’t actually doing acting in drama class (yep I was a drama kid), I was sneaking out to do coffee runs for my drama teacher. Was really able to practice coordination driving with coffee.

Were you ever contracted with the Carnival Fascination?
>Where and what is home to you?

I’m based out of NYC, where I am now. But ideally we’d like to move to a place with forests and mountains. Home is where my wife and dog are, and if they’re not with me, I’m a homebody and can settle in wherever. I’m used to living out of a suitcase after years on the road.

>What’s your Bucket List destination?

Switzerland! We were supposed to get married there for our elopement/honeymoon but pandemic happened. Ce le vie! One day. Will probably make a thruhike out of it when we go. We love hiking.

>How challenging is it to make lasting friendships doing the cruise contract scene?

We have plenty of downtime, so any coworkers on the ship we connect to we can hang out with as much as we can. Usually we’ll find 2-3 friends that we’ll form bonds with after contract. It’s easy to do since we’re around each other 24/7 in a dorm-like situation. As far as continuing friendships with those on land? It’s difficult, for sure. Texting was free on the ship which is nice. But yeah, I’m not having dinner parties from my friends in Brooklyn while I’m in the Bahamas

>Were you ever contracted with the Carnival Fascination?
Nope! But we docked with them every so often. I think. Carnival has like 30 ships.

What's the last thing you binged on Netflix?

Where is the most exciting place a cruise has taken you? Have you ever had a scary cruise experience (like bad weather scary)
> How do you deal with motion sickness?

Luckily, I don’t get motion sick. My wife, who was also on the cruise with me, isn’t usually so lucky. You get used to the rocking after being on for so long, but we definitely have our moments during storms that I have felt slightly queasy. They give free Dramamine for everyone, and we see lots of guests with those little dots put behind their ears. Seems to work. Night time rocking is great for sleep. Also, if you’re ever seasick, head towards the very middle of the ship- it’s usually the least rocky.

> Have you ever sent a family member an awkwardly worded autocorrected text?

Yeah, last year I texted my mom “happy bitch dad”
Though it doesn’t happen IRL as often as it does on here, I think because I tend to type fast and don’t proofread as often

> What's the last thing you binged on Netflix?

Need to look through my history, hold on.
Oh, ‘Pieces of Her’. We like Toni Collette. The premise was nice, and I liked the first half, but I didn’t like the rest of it. I can’t put my finger on it, but it was meh.

2nd season of Upload on Prime was pretty good tho. Had some questionable plot decisions but great humor in the writing

> Where is the most exciting place a cruise has taken you?

Most exciting is what you make of it- the appeal, to me, of the destinations is how far you can get from the port itself. There’s always cruise line-sponsored excursions that are fun if you’ve never, like, snorkeled or been in a dune buggy or just want a guided tour of the nearby town, but my wife and I are much more adventurous.
A few years ago, St Maarten was a stop- we left the port with all the touristy shops and such, and took a taxi to the other side of the island (it’s one big island). Got off at this little resort nestled between some mountains. Beautiful. Did a zip line tour with just my wife and a guide, who handed us self-application gear, some beat up gloves, told us how to brake, and peaced out. Super unsafe! But no waiting for slow people, we could zoom zoom all the way to the tree on each line. Got some bad burns accidentally brushing my hand, but it’s all good. Ended with a hike around the ridge, and booked it back to the ship to perform that night!
Another one- Cabo. Went on a camel ride, then went bungie jumping into a canyon.
Another one- St. Lucia. Took a 2 hour bus ride to a pointy craggy mountain, one of the hardest hikes of my life. The back 1/4 was just climbing ropes up vertical faces. Beautiful views, totally worth it.

Man I could go on.

> Have you ever had a scary cruise experience (like bad weather scary)
We’ve had, just last contract, cruises where we had 12-14 foot waves licking the 4th deck. Thing is, as a crew member, we’re never worried. And unless you’re on, say, the Costa Concordia out of Italy (look it up), cruise ships are extremely safe.
But performing during those swells? Kill me. When you have guests come up to you around the ship later on saying ‘I don’t know how you could balance or dance during that storm last night’ my response is something like ‘YEAH ME NEITHER’.
This one time I was getting off a lift in the stage that started to come back up to stage level from 10 feet down, and the swinging was so violent that it pushed the side of the steel base structure and created a large mountain. Broke a few things. Don’t worry, we had ushers doing trivia or some shit to the horrified audience for about 45 minutes while the techs fixed it. Then we somehow restarted the show.

Well, I’m an actor by trade. I just ended my 3rd cruise contract, and honestly probably won’t do it again. Just odd jobs until the next gig. Im actually interested in tabletop games to the extent that I’m taking steps creating my own Publishing company. Working on about 6 different prototypes to get something up this year. Hopefully.

> Have you ever ended a contract outside the US and stayed abroad for a while?
So far, all my contracts began and ended in the US. Could have done a Mediterranean cruise contract, but turned it down because it was just not the right timing.

I did a tour that went to Tokyo and Seoul for some months which was kickass. Would love to go back there. My wife and I love exploring so we try and make time to see things between our contracts in other countries and around the US.

How do you stay in shape while working on a cruise?
>Why Scotty?
The real answer that isn’t Star Wars or dog related- I once had a childhood acquaintance named Scotty who was the biggest piece of shit that I knew and so I did what everyone would do and use it as my screen name in the MMROPG I was playing at the time. So if I died or something, it wouldn’t be me, it would be Scotty.

Damn, that’s kinda morbid and petty now that I have it in writing.

Anyway, I adapted the name over the years when I made characters to be related to the Star Wars guy and the dog. But them’s the origin.

>Favorite Dish to have on a cruise?
Well, whatever they’re offering, I guess. When we had privileges to eat in the buffets, we’d get a special corner every day in the back. Indian was always my favorite, next to seafood corner.

Otherwise, it was just anything edible that wasn’t Swai or uncooked chicken bones. And there were lots of that..

>How do you stay in shape while working on a cruise?
Our department had a lot more downtime than other departments, so I was able to go to the crew gym pretty frequently. It’s just we had to find times where Dining wasn’t there. I dunno what it was with the Dining team, but there were always a shitton of alpha aggro yelling douchebags between food service. Never wanted to go to the gym during the day because of that reason

No, It’s refreshing to hear that you do have a favoritism towards one of your kids. Like, I’m sure every parent would want to be equal in their treatment of each child. But what you said makes sense.

1. What’s your view on pets in the household?
2. What’s your favorite alcohol and or cocktail?
3. What’s your least favorite type of rock?
4. Would you rather fight 4 marmot-sized humans or 1 human-sized marmot?
5. What is the worst trouble you’ve been in (criminal or otherwise)
