Re: What do you be readin'?

lapluie Oh,sorry I was not clear. I wasn't talking about a series of books, but a series of women :)

I ordered this, it is about the Queen of Romania, who was a fascinating person. She used a literary pseudonym, Carmen Sylva. She was a fairly prolific writer in several genres. Very unusual and independant for her time and position in society.

This book looks like a good read, I look forward to it.

Which Elisabeth; Carmen Sylva or or her greatniece, E.of R.who went on to be Queen of the Hellenes? Whichever one, I shall have to look for this because I have always had a fascination for the woman who came between them, Marie of Edinburgh.

One of the best things I've read in a while.
This has been popular here as well. I have a friend who is a librarian, and she said it was starting to get on local HS reading lists.

Re: What do you be readin'?

War And Peace was hard for me, Anna Karenina was easier.

I have not read Slaughterhouse 5 in a really long time. That needs to be remedied I think.

Don't really read too much, just stuff like Bukowski and the like.
I am currently rereading the series myself. I do it every year in the vain hope that I will have the story fresh in my mind should GRRM will finally bring out the next book :sigh:

Re: What do you be readin'?

Oh wow, I haven't read Raymond Carver since college. Whenever I come to a pivot point, I think to myself, "My life is going to change, I can feel it" which was how one of the stories ended in the collection we read for a Minimalism class. I still have my annotated copy of that book somewhere.

No, when I read that, I thought alot of it was funny too. It is written that way.

Although you could be right, we could BOTH be sick :)

I did that when I was a teenager, I was grounded so much. After I ran out of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, I moved on to Websters.

I am going to be starting the Book of the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe later this week. Anyone read it? I am kind of surprised I never have before.

Re: What do you be readin'?

bea wrote:@ daisy - that's odd to me that you don't enjoy books in the first person so much as books in the third person. I know most writers make the decision to write in the first person because a) they are telling THAT character's story and b) because it does tend to draw in the wider audience. People tend to like things that are written in "I" and "me" because they can replace their own selves in "I" and "me." I'd love to hear more about what it is about books written that way that make it more difficult for you to enjoy. Even if it's a soley personal thing.
I find this odd, becasue I also dislike first person narrative, it seems limiting. I tend to dislike things written in the "I" because it is making presumptions about my viewpoint; I tend to automatically disagree with first person protagonists becasue i am curmudgeony that way.

Taste is so very personal.

Re: What do you be readin'?

I never read Infinite Jest, but i will say that Anna Karenina is the most accessible Tolstoy. It is really the most accessible srs bsns Russian novel except perhaps the Brothers Karamazov. Anna K is a bit less harsh on women then Madame Bovary, with a somewhat similar plot. I would never in a zillion years call it "feminist" , but it is more balanced that way than many 19th century novels.

I just reread Larry Nivens Footfall ( I <3 Sci Fi) and am about to start Stephen Kings Dreamcatcher. I lost touch with King around the time he wrote that book about the giant alien ship buried in someones yard in Maine, but I was told I might like this. So i will try it.
