Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

To answer a question asked in private: votes are locked in FX. If there is a game situation where a sleep or wrongful execution would lead to the mafia winning, then the poll will no longer be used, and players will be required to post their votes in thread. These votes will be locked and unchangeable once made.

Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

The two women were greeted at dawn by the call of countless birds, taking to the air to begin their day as they squawked and screeched. And... something more. There was a single note amongst them that was discordant, that felt eerily human and yet inhuman, like the mad laugh of a clown twisted into a horrid echo by the vocal cords of a monster. Polly looked puzzled, but Liz's eyes widened.

"What's wrong?" asked Polly. "Do you know what that sound could be?"

"It's... oh, right, you always focused on the scientific end of explorer's research, didn't you?" said Liz. "This is... more of a myth. A legend. Something that was always claimed to be a hoax..."

"Well, whatever it is, it's clearly no myth," said Polly. "You'd better tell me about it, and quick, before we get attacked again."

"Remember when we found Macdougall's corpse, back in the valley?" said Liz. "Well, a few hundred years ago, the famed explorer Jimmy 'Jagged' Jay made a very similar discovery - the body of a dead explorer, with a book of notes documenting everything they'd encountered. He was the president of MOD at the time, so there was a lot of interest in the corpse."

MOD, or Monitoring Overseas Domiciles, was an organization set up to keep an eye on strange and exotic lands, like the one that Polly and Liz were lost in, and had evolved into the world's largest explorer's organization. As the president of the MOD - not to mention his own reputation for exploring the most treacherous of places - Jimmy Jay would have his discoveries taken very seriously indeed.

"So why haven't I heard about this?" asked Polly.

"Because it was largely dismissed as a hoax," said Liz. "The book of notes wasn't a proper notebook like a real explorer would use. It was supposed to be recording their observations, but the very first page just had notes about a chess opening. c4 e5 c3 d5, if I remember the story correctly."

"Ha!" said Polly. "So it was an amateur who repurposed a chess book into a makeshift notebook. Still, that doesn't mean their eyes don't work. Why weren't their observations taken seriously?"

"Well, for another," said Liz, "The book was written in a cryptic cipher, which doesn't really make sense for an amateur to do. Then there's the stuff they claimed to see - and the creature making that mating call, like a jester's giggle, is one of them. The cipher was only partially broken, so it still isn't clear what this unnamed explorer meant to call the creature - it was either Jack-off Arts or Jack of Hearts, although most people agree to call it the latter, just for decency's sake."

"That all sounds very strange," said Polly. "I see why people never really took this seriously. It sounds too odd to be true, even for these lands. Jimmy Jay would never lie about a discovery, but perhaps someone planted a fake body in the plains as a prank of some sort."

"And one other thing," said Liz. "The notebook claimed that the Jack of Hearts was completely immune to being cut - that it was unchoppable."

Just as Liz finished her story, something the two explorers had never seen before and would never see again burst out of a thicket of trees to their left. It looked like a grinning clown, with a perpetual sneer on its face, bouncing on a single, coiled tail. The two women tensed, preparing to defend themselves. Before anyone could react, the earth shook like thunder, and loud hoofbeats filled the air.

The Jack of Hearts squealed, turning to flee, but a flash of steel came down, and the strange little creature was cleaved from shoulder to knee, the two halves of its body simply falling apart onto the unforgiving sands. "I guess it was a hoax after all," gasped Liz. "Looks like the Jack of Hearts wasn't unchoppable."

"We have bigger things to worry about right now, Liz..." mumbled Polly. "Like the beast that just killed it."

The ground rumbled, and a stark black shadow fell over the world.

Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

After facing so many dangers, it came as a relief to the explorers when they found an oasis - a real one, this time - and were able to rest in the shade of a palm tree, with a deep pool of water at their feet. But their relief was short lived, for as they bent down to take a sip of water from the pool, an orange fish the size of a man burst forward from the waves, its oversized fins flapping furiously as it launched itself at them.

The explorers screamed and scrambled back, but the fish advanced, its fins curled into makeshift legs as it viciously defended its territory. Between its eyes was a large, vicious looking horn, wrapped in a cone of what looked like tinfoil, shimmering under the light of the stars. Liz ran forward, using one of Macdougall's sharpened bones as a weapon, but the fish dodged with surprising speed, rippling to the side to let her stumble past it as though she wasn't even there. Her momentum carried her past the fish, and she stumbled to her knees, even as it advanced on Polly.

"That speed's not natural!" called out Liz. "That's a Tinfoil Achromatic!"

It was an apt name for the deadly beast, for the tinfoil around its horn was sharpened to a razor point and had been known to gore many brave explorers to death. Fortunately, this was one of the dangers of the Gamethrower territories that they had studied before coming here, and so Polly knew what to do. The weakness of this fish was that it struck with such momentous force that once it started forward, it had no way of stopping or reversing momentum. A glance at Liz showed that the other explorer shared her thought, and as one, the two of them began circling warily around the fish, forcing it to split its attention between the both of them.

When the moment was right, Polly gave Liz a hand signal, and Liz turned her cautious circling into a sudden run forward, fingertips scraping against toughened scales as she yanked the tinfoil right off the Achromatic's horn. It bellowed in rage, turning to face her completely, and charged straight at her without thinking, causing Liz to yelp out as she hurled herself to the ground, rolling to one side.

They had timed the moment just right. That massive horn skewered the base of the palm tree they had rested under, and with a loud creaking sound, the wood splintered and fell, smashing down the Achromatic under its weight and ending its life.

"That was a close call," breathed Liz. "Let's settle down here for the night. If this was an Achromatic's territory, nothing else in the wastes will dare to approach it. We can drink the water here, and make filet from its carcass."

Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

Polly and Liz searched the surrounding hills with thorough care, but they never managed to find the Quickhammerer hiding in those dusty slopes. They would have to watch their step from now on, lest they return to haunt the intrepid explorers.

Suddenly, Liz yelps as she trips over a root hidden in the ground. No, not a root, but...

"Is that a skeleton?" she said incredulously.

"Not just any skeleton. Look!" Polly fished a notebook out of the dirt. It was too weathered to read the notes inside - the only whole page was cryptically marked "My Wolf Buddies", but the two lines below it had been firmly rubbed out.

Yet there was no mistaking what this was. This was the accounts ledger of the legendary explorer, Accountability MacDougall, one of the few things around here not of Gamethrower stock.

"So he hasn't been missing all these years. He met an untimely end here," said Polly, astonished. "I guess the rumors he'd changed his identity and moved to Australia weren't true after all."

The discovery, although morbid, cheered the two explorers up. They would get quite a lot of fame if they brought back proof of Macdougall's remains. So they continued on their way with a spring in their step.

Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

Just as Polly and Liz reached the bottom of a snowy hill, a powerful rumbling shook them to their core. From the top of the hill crested a rickety wagon, hurtling down at them with blinding speed. And lying within the confines of the wagon, gleaming teeth bared and sharpened, was a ferocious looking werewolf.

With fur of abyssal black, and claws stained with the blood of its victims, the werewolf was easy to identify - this was an Outed Wolf, one of the apex predators of the Gamethrower Lands, so named for its inability to shift back into human form.

The two explorers let out terrified screams, and the wolf leaned forward, eager for a juicy meal, but a split second before its wagon reached them, a massive hammer dropped out of the sky and pulverized it, sending splinters of wood everywhere and leaving the Outed Wolf a bloody smear on the ground.

"A Quickhammer!" gasped Polly. "This is the work of dark magic. It must have been summoned by one of the great Gamethrower Sages."

But the explorers' relief was short-lived, as more hammers started raining from the sky, like waves of hail. They needed to find the Quickhammerer, and fast, or they'd meet the same fate as the Outed Wolf.

Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

The wind rose and the scuffing of rock and dust was the only warning that Polly and Liz had before the Gamethrower was upon them. He was a young boy, dressed in a futuristic-looking space suit, and he carried a matte-black pistol in his right hand.

Polly juked to the right, dodging the shot aimed at her head, while Liz crashed into the young Gamethrower from behind, tackling him to the ground and pinning him down. As the boy struggled, Polly grabbed a large boulder and slammed it down on his head, killing him instantly.

"Jesus," said Liz. "He was just a kid."

"A kid who was planning to kill us," said Polly. She fished out a red capsule from his satchel. "This is one of the smoke flares that Gamethrowers use to fake red checks."

A solemn quiet descended upon the exploring duo. They scavenged through the rest of the Gamethrower's belongings, finding a name tag that read "Ender Wiggin" and enough supplies to let them continue on their way.

And so the explorers forged on, leaving their would-be assailant buried in a shallow grave.

Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

It was a cold and windy day in September, and the famed explorers, Polly C. X. and Elizabeth "Liz" Black, were traversing the strange and tumultous wilderness of the Syndicate. Through the lands they roamed, from the Burglary to the Hustle, and even to the Don's Hideout. But before they knew it, they found themselves in the territory of the Gamethrowers. This was a desolate, forsaken land, and the explorers soon found themselves lost without any food or water.

"Look there!" said Polly. In the sky, floating just above the horizon, was a giant red checkmark. This was well known as a sign of a nearby oasis, for they were known to produce gaseous crimson fumes that billowed into the air.

The explorers hurried towards it, but as they neared the oasis, they found it dry and empty, with only the dessicated skeleton of a cat lying in the pit of what had once been a pool of water. As they stared up at the checkmark, they saw it dissolve before their very eyes.

"An illusion!" gasped Liz. "The Gamethrowers that inhabit this region often create mirages of red checks to lure their prey. If we can find the person who faked this one, we might be able to take their supplies of food and water to sustain ourselves."

"But if they find us first," said Polly grimly, "We'll be their food, instead."

Re: Mafia Misplay Mafia

Read the rules carefully, particularly the "special rules" section, and the parts about EOD ties, conceding, and voting in the poll, as those may differ from where you are used to playing.

IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED A LINK TO THE MAFIA CHAT, YOU ARE TOWN. Every game where town does not receive a role PM, someone will try to angleshoot themselves town by going "hey, I never received a role PM, what alignment am I?" I am making this as clear as possible so this does not happen. It's stupid and it doesn't work. Stop making me and other spectators read through 3 pages of debate about whether or not the derpclear is real. People signed up to play mafia, not engage in that nonsense.

Mafia Misplay Mafia

Setup: 12 Vanilla Townies, 3 Mafia Goons.

Deadlines: 48 hour days, 24 hour nights. The thread is closed during the night phase. Days/nights end at 8PM EST.

Special rules: Appeals to emotion that do not violate site rules are permitted. Speculating into the alignment-indicative nature of replacements is permitted. Speculating into the alignment-indicative nature of people's online statuses is permitted. No other forms of angleshooting are permitted. If you are uncertain if something is permitted, contact me. A guide to hiding your online status can be found here.

Boilerplate respect reminder:
Remember that the premier rules in any Syndicate Mafia game come straight from the site rules. Review those rules below, and direct any concerns you may have to the host or moderator(s) on duty.

Also always be mindful of the culture of respect that must be maintained in all Syndicate spaces at all times, to include this game thread and any external communication spaces relating to the game. Players must be respectful to one another, to the game host, to the members of the staff overseeing the game, to the game itself by way of its rules and spirit, to the Syndicate community in general, and ideally also to themselves. Respect is never optional. See our full manifesto on our culture of respect below.
Game rules:
1) None of you know your flavor except the mafia. Anyone who says they do is either lying or mafia. Your flavor will be revealed upon death.

2) The vote in the poll is the official vote. Any votes in-thread will be disregarded in favor of the vote in the poll. You do not have to vote in-thread when you make a vote in the poll; as per the theme of the game, it is the responsibility of the players to hold you accountable for any shenanigans.

3) There are no hammers. At EOD, the player with the most votes will be eliminated.

4) If there is a tie between two players at EOD, nobody will be executed. Remember, this game's theme is mafia misplays and how to hold them accountable. Don't let ties happen or you will suffer the consequences.

5) You can vote sleep if you want. Mafia have to kill each night; if they do not, the kill will be randed. I prefer to let the mafia no-kill, but in this case it leads to weird situations where neither alignment wants to kill someone at F4.

6) There is no postcap. There is no minimum post requirement. The game's theme is mafia misplays and holding them accountable... so players are responsible for holding lowposters accountable. Or finding them town off the 2 posts they made and clearing them anyway. Props to you if you can do that.

7) Do not falsely concede the game in thread. I am a very lenient host this game, but I don't want to have to deal with this shit and for some reason it has been gaining popularity lately. If you try to concede or pretend to concede, I will immediately replace you out regardless of your alignment. You can still concede in private, and you can still discuss concessions (eg. "if the wolf team were so and so, they would have conceded already"), but you may not publicly concede or pretend to concede.

8) I won't bother you with the rest of the standard stuff about not talking outside of the game thread or editing posts. You guys are all experienced mafia players. You know how this works. If you want to do anything remotely sketchy that isn't explicitly permitted, ask me first.
