So say we all.
Any other fans of The Office think of this gem when signing up? Having never watched Battlestar Galactica, this was the first thing that crossed my mind. :P
I will catch up later today when my wife is out shopping for Mother's Day gifts for her mom.

So say we all.
As long as I'm playing catch-up, I'm just going to post that line every time I post just in case.
Sorry for not helping with the cipher puzzle. I made my fake-out Joker meme post and then my wife wanted to watch another episode of The People v. OJ Simpson while we still get it On Demand. After OJ, our four-year-old woke up crying because she peed the bed. After dealing with that, we were both tired. With tired eyes, tired minds, tired souls, we slept.
I'm up to page 8 but the baby needs her bottle. This game starting on a weekend means I'm going to be a ghost for the most part. The admiral jumping the fleet mechanic is going to drive my spreadsheet crazy but I shall persevere.

Ah, but it is not a fake claim. The G in G-Man stands for Galen, which is my name.Ricochet wrote:Not sure if I should say the salute, after SVS said it. Then again, she didn't salute properly Admiral Goldama herself, so it's prolly nothing to follow protocol.
G-Man, outing is forbidden, so there's not much to discuss about your fake claim, except if a modkill happens to come up next.
Whoever has the Galen Tyrol role is now automatically cooler than they were before because they are now a Galen like me.

All this back-and-forth reminds me of my tinnitius-it's distracting and even annoying at times but there's no avoiding it so you just have to work through it. I've got notes on only about 1/3 of the players so far. I'm in no position to judge because my participation has been minimal up to now but sheesh. Big game is big and quiet players are quiet.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day One
As long as me posting my notes gets me at least a mild town read from the mighty JJJ, I'll gladly share.JaggedJimmyJay wrote:If you're willing to share those notes, assuming they're about reads alone, then that'd be swell. It'd be something substantive to discuss instead of whatever we've had for the last 600 posts.G-Man wrote:All this back-and-forth reminds me of my tinnitius-it's distracting and even annoying at times but there's no avoiding it so you just have to work through it. DrumBeats stood out initially for jumping right in and requesting a letter without any discussion. It was a rush to judgement that was poor but, given that nobody (I assume) knew the puzzle was ciphered, it's far from indicative. Being helpful on a puzzle is neither here nor there, really. At least he picked what is normally a high-frequency letter.
Epignosis also jumped right in an declared a letter for the puzzle. He picked E, which I assume served a dual purpose- his name begins with E and it's the highest-frequency letter (not just vowel) in the English language. He tried a few guesses and we haven't head from him since. It's Epi, so I'm resisting the natural impulse to assume he's up to no good.
Ika said someone silenced him but for how long? I assume that it had something to do with not following the rules. He seemed willfully defiant of the voting rules, which is odd, given that votes are not changeable. And a loving eye-roll for the heated discussion of how he knows Silverwolf on an ESP kind of level. I remember that from E.S.T. Mafia and I've come to know quite quickly just to not get caught up in that. Smile and nod.
JaggedJimmyJay got some kudos in my book for not handing out town cred just for helping on the puzzle. I had an eyebrow twitch when he said he wasn't going to do the usual JJJ ISO rallies of awesomeness that he is loved/hated for but that hasn't crossed over into concern yet. I thought your early Toaster Reads on DrumBeats and Silverwolf were intriguing but I will have to go back at some point to remember why (I wrote that note hours ago and this game is proceeding too fast for me to remember much of anything).
LoRab shared my notice of Ika's voting noncompliance but I thought she may have been a little too quick to jab at him with it in the thread. Full disclosure- I am always prone to suspecting her. For some reason my suspiciometer (pronounced suh-spish-E-ah-mi-ter) has always been hardwired against her. She was the first person I noticed that suggested the Toasters might not have BTSC. At first I thought it was a strange point to throw out there but the more others have discussed the potential for atypical setup structure, the more I try to see this as honest conjecture. She fell into the Ika-knows-Silverwolf trap too.
Metalmarsh89 seemed initially silly but that Epi vote out of nowhere for no reason has me scratching my head. His posts haven't bore much substance but I feel like that's not out of the ordinary for him. That barking marmot gif he posted felt a little passive-aggressive though.
Matt is an enigma to me. I've played very few games (possibly only one?) with him and I believe I've been wrong about him every time. His early suggestion of Scotty doing the puzzle as a cred grab is bold and probably a little too Keyser Soze for Day 1 (and believe me, I know Keyser Soze). His opinion that some humans might be on the mafia team also seems far-fetched. Maybe I'm reading the separation between Humans and Toasters too literally but it's a convenient way to read the roles for me for now. To his credit, he's not afraid to throw some crazy ideas out there that might make people look at him like he's got two heads (or maybe just a robotic head). It would be easier to keep those crazy ideas to himself but perhaps Matt is known for that by now and people would be suspicious of him for not doing so.
Polo seemed to be very adept at solving the cipher. He also threw out civ cred a little quickly for those helping on the cipher. There was a brief back-and-forth with ObscureAllure (who I remember from a forum long long ago as a confident and headstrong player with a lot of grit and spit) but I don't know how much to read into that, if at all.
Ricochet is a developing read. I would have thought he'd have noted from hosting E.S.T. that arguing with Ika about Silverwolf is a fools errand. He rejected the notion that humans could be mafia from the start but he thinks it's possible that there could be two BTSC groups amidst Team Toaster. The latter is an interesting theory based off of the name colors in the role list. Has anyone split those names out yet between red and green?
Silverwolf said she was suspicious of S~V~S and I for not helping with the puzzle. That's all I have for her. I just like to keep tabs on who suspects me.
That's all the notes I have for now. Other players have posted but nothing gave me a noteworthy impression just yet. I'll start back a few pages tonight if I can and see if anything else jumps out at me.

Astute note-taking on suspicions can be helpful. I've called a few people out in games past for suspecting me early and then buddying up to me later or vice versa. They aren't always baddies but it's nice to call people out on BS from time to time.JaggedJimmyJay wrote:Why is that?G-Man wrote:I just like to keep tabs on who suspects me.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day One
At home again but still busy. Sorry for being so nonparticipatory Day 1. I have to get caught up on the thead before voting. I'll address the concerns against me tomorrow when I'll have more time.
The last thing I saw was Rico voting for S~V~S. Wow. Even though she's taking issue with my notes post (they were just observations and feelings-sorry they didn't lead to hard reads but I've always said I'm not a good people reader and I am not very good at civvie detective work until I can chew on a few days of vote data), I feel that she is genuine. In Spirited Away, she put some pressure on me to produce and clarify. I feel the same vibe coming from her now. I don't understand the vote for her at all.
Lemme go get more caught up and maybe it will make more sense. No odea who to vote for yet.

Alright you guys are posting too fast for me to catch up. I'm only back up to page 22 and it's bedtime. The only thing that still has me feeling uneasy is MM because I'm reading in a hurry and almost nothing is sinking in. I'm sorry that this vote is probably lame and wrong but I have to vote somewhere.
vote: Marmot

Are you folks ever going to slow down with these posts? I went back to fill in my notes and now I'm 10 pages behind again. I found where Epi's tone turned the thread on him and a few other minor points worth noting. If I can catch up tonight (doubtful), I'll update my notes now that I have at least had a fleeting thought on just about everyone.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Night One
Agreed. I'm not trying to stifle discussion but I'd like to get caught up. I realize that I don't commit as much time to mafia as most of you but I'd like to spend what time I can commit to the game's present and not its past.sig wrote:Yeah I agree with Gman here 41 pages +1600 posts for only night 1 is alot. Can we slow them down a bit? And no I'm not trying to silent anyone or stop discussions, but when about half the players have under 50 posts then I think the higher posters need to cool down a bit. I think this actually helps the mafia members more.
Kthanksbye!

Active game continues to be active. I'm on page 41. I'll see if I can knock out three or four more pages over lunch.
For the record, if we haven't already found the rezz ship, I can cover the 11:49 a.m.-ish shift on any given weekday but weekends are out for me.
*deep breath before diving back in*
linki- I see we haven't gotten lucky yet. Feel free to add me to the schedule somewhere down the line.

Im entertaining the idea that JJJ might be bad. He seems to strive to look P50, but it feels forced. Thats only tone though, I can barely remember anything he has said. Although that might be a point in itself. Im feeling good about Rico though.
What does everyone think of JJJ?
No, I'm definitely not playing as hard as I did in Turf Wars, where I fininished with 1,100 posts in only about 6 cycles of play. I don't have the energy to be that guy in every single game. The "imitation" you're talking about is bunk, I am imitating myself. I'm me. This is how I talk, and this is how I play. What about it strikes you as insincere?
A song for JJJ:

Adding my notes into my spreadsheet at the moment. When I used to play Battleship as a kid, I always liked to put them vertically in the first column. With that in mind, I was eyeing up E1 to stay on the grid. If we think that's too close to the first rezz ship, I could go for D6 too. I always liked keeping my ships out of the middle.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day Two
A few thoughts on sector selection:
We have two sections of the grid that are void of sorties- C1:F2 and B4:C6. I think I'd honestly like to strike in one of those clusters unless we feel like we should move to a sweeping pattern to clear out a corner first. I like the ninja random jumping method because whether Golden picked the placement or the Toasters did, there is an element of randomness to it all. Random question selection worked really well for a guy on Jeopardy one time because it rattled his opponents. If we keep hopping around the grid, the Toasters can't really take comfort like they could if we started in one corner and they know we won't reach a ship for a while.
I ran the math too. A 6x6 grid has 36 sectors. At a max of four sectors per day, we'll hit all sectors in 9 real-time days. That's three game days and nights unless we get lucky and find however many are left before exhausting the grid.
If the placement is truly random, then thinking too much about it won't help us. If there was placement involved, strategy would be based on how many rezz ships there are. Is there any lore on something like that? If two ships, it's hard to tell where the second would be. Reverse psychology would put it close to the first one we blew up. If three, I'd think some kind of evenly spaced triangle formation. Four or more- who knows.
Thoughts?

I did that before. I found it quite disconcerting. Someone will be along to clean it up shortly, I imagine.
Speaking of nostalgia I have to say I giggled when Silver said LC's posts were "fluffy."
That was my first game on The Piano but you guys had played two before that. Maybe Lost and Buffy? Or was At the Hellmouth an LP game? I played ZOMG Zombies and I don't recall it having secret events. I did not play Computer Lab. I was thinking maybe Matrix Mafia or, if SD is correct about it being a Scocub game, perhaps Mafia 2099- that was a futuristic sci-fi based game with a lot of weird stuff in it.

To have an extra ship jumping around would make it almost impossible for the humans/civvies/whateveryouthinkthegoodguysshouldbecalled to win.

Let me know if you want any specifics on a particular player and I'll look through my notes on them again and post some details. At this point, I think I'm inclined most toward voting for Nutella because she's giving off the most Lazy Rotten Debra vibes.
Linki: Nice find Scotty. Hopefully the Hub isn't involved because it's bad enough that it might take three game days and nights to clear the grid and make the Toasters killable. To have an extra ship jumping around would make it almost impossible for the humans/civvies/whateveryouthinkthegoodguysshouldbecalled to win.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day Two
And now a few other points I jotted down during my catch-up reading:
No joke, without fail my brain reads the phrase 'null scum' as 'numskull.' I don't know why my brain does it but I giggle every time it happens.
Early on I struggled with the concept of the sortie grid. It seemed a little too unfair that we would have to go through such a long search period to make the Toasters killable. I'm curious if any BSG lore people can answer this- are certain Toaster models reanimated to specific rezz ships? In other words, could some of the Toasters now be killable because their assigned rezz ship is gone? Or were there some of every model on each rezz ship? I'm just trying to think of ways that we're not stuck before clearing the whole grid.
While it seems like Epi is probably a civvie-aligned Toaster, the argument over killing them all or only some is pretty simple- I don't see how killing all the Toasters can be a bad thing for the humans. Based on lore, some may be civvie aligned but if we zap them all, and no humans are baddies, then we still win. If there are humans whose wincons require civ-aligned Toasters to be alive, that sucks.
Re: scum v. mafia, I get it now. All mafia are scum but not all scum are mafia.
RIP Ika. I was very surprised by his death. Please don't anyone take this the wrong way, but he was being somewhat disruptive, which baddies usually appreciate and don't interfere with. Until he died, it looked like we were heading for a Day 2 where the two main trains would have been Ika and Epi. I'll take the Ika/Silverwolf vouching at face value until I get burned by it, so I saw Ika as a frustrated civvie. Losing a civvie is bad any time. Being tasked with the situation where the top two are a frustrated civvie and a likely unlynchable role of questionable allegiance isn't savory at all. Ika's death reminds me of Martha's death in Biblical. It's not a death that provides any value other than eliminating someone they are displeased with. It's a bit impetuous a decision, really.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day Two
A stroll down ISO lane is in order for all the players I don't have a read on yet. Most of them just haven't posted enough to make an impression on me. I had trouble reading you in Spirited Away as well. I'm not sure what it is about you, Scotty, but it's like you're a mental stop sign to me.Scotty wrote:Feel free to read me, if you want to start somewhere.
The thing about jumping ships, is I think I recall reading that Natalie Cylonpants found the HUB, it jumped, and President Roslin jumps to follow the HUB. It's possible that Roslin may get some information.
There's definite information out there if the Hub is in fact able to be moved, and in that case we've surely got some sort of safeguard role that can intercept coordinates or something.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day Two
Are you confused about what I wrote? Or are you saying that you think there are Toasters who need humans alive in order to win? Because that does make sense if we're correctly assuming a non-binary setup.Ricochet wrote:My guess is that's the other way around from how you put it in the last sentence.G-Man wrote:While it seems like Epi is probably a civvie-aligned Toaster, the argument over killing them all or only some is pretty simple- I don't see how killing all the Toasters can be a bad thing for the humans. What I meant is that if there are humans who need Toasters alive in some kind of enabler relationship, that sucks for them because I see nothing wrong with locating and eliminating all the Toasters.

Re: Battlestar Galactica Mafia - Day Two
Additional details are needed, I think, regarding my list. That list, if you'll note, is in alphabetical order. Black Rock and LoRab are on my sus list largely because they are two players that I almost always suspect by default. They've both been on the quietish side but if I had to rank my sus list (most sus to least sus) it would look like this:G-Man wrote:POSSIBLY MAFIA

Glorfindel

I'm trying to give people the benefit of the doubt due to the game starting over Mother's Day weekend. That benefit of the doubt expires come Day 3. I'll be looking for Lazy Rotten Debras come Day 3.

Is there anything specific on Metalmarsh that gives you pause?
A lot of my issues with Metalmarsh revolve around his lack of substance. I've been noting page #'s on my notes spreadsheet, so the information below relates to page #'s in the thread (assuming a thread set to 40 posts per page).JaggedJimmyJay wrote:I'd be interested in hearing your beefs with Metalmarsh89 and Glorfindel to round out your top four, since I've already examined the other two thoroughly.
He starts out Day 1 with his usual silliness. Maybe it's because I was just in a game he hosted (hence he was a little more serious) that has me thrown off but his silliness seemed to run on too long. His early vote was odd and on page 15 he was asking some very easily answered questions and then more goofiness. More fluff and snark until page 29. That's when I first note him saying anything that I deemed useful. He was cautioning listening to what Epi was saying. This is after the lynch mind you. That means he coasted through Day 1 on a whimsical flying snark machine.
Some other things he said seemed off. He didn't believe that some Toasters could be civ-aligned, which makes a lot of sense for a complex game based on what seems to be a complex show. On top of it all, Golden the Coward speficially mentions that wincons are secret. His skepticism of the checkerboard grid plan was palatable to a point- Drum could have suggested that grid plot because it would miss the rezz ship(s) but it wasn't so sneaky at all. I also grew tired of him by page 37 because it seemed like he was content to just troll Ika rather than keep the game rolling forward.
I have very little on him during Day 2 just yet. All in all, he coasted, he poked, he shrugged, and he called it a day. I didn't see much helpful content and the whole sum of it makes me give him a hard sideways glance.

As for Glorfindel, he's my Lazy Rotten Debra of the game so far. He's made 13 posts and a few of them are of the "catching up " variety. He posts a few civvie vibes, agrees with a lot of other people's thoughts, gets sidetracked into lore/mechanics discussions, and tells us who he won't vote for. What's missing is independent thought and any mention of his own suspicions. That's almost exactly what Debra did in Biblical Mafia, hence the term Lazy Rotten Debra.

Alright, it's the end of the workday and I've got evening plans. I hope to check in later on tonight but there's another hockey game on tonight (and it's a Game 7). I am going with Nutella. A sliver of me wants to give her another day to prove herself but I'm out of time for the day and I just can't shake that Lazy Rotten Deborah vibe. I think Metalmarsh and Long Con could also be viable candidates today but I understand that MM is little more than a curiosity to a number of folks right now.

Awesome result! But I'm confused (and bear with me if I'm repeating anything that's already been discussed, I'll be catching up throughout the day). Nutella died as a Toaster instead of being rezzed like Epi. If we're still hunting rezz ships, why did Nutella die? I had wondered earlier about the possibility that some Toaster models are linked with a certain rezz ship (assuming that Golden the Coward isn't just trolling us by allowing the grid search to continue needlessly).

On Board Battlestar Galactica
HUMANS:
Admiral William Adama
Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace
Lee 'Apollo' Adama
Saul Tigh
Galen Tyrol
Karl ‘Helo’ Agathon
Felix Gaeta
Anastasia 'Dee' Dualla
Cally Henderson
Sam Anders
Lou ‘Kat’ Katraine
Brendon ‘Hot Dog’ Costanza
Doc Cottle
TOASTERS:
John Cavil (number one)
Aaron Doral (number five)
Sharon ‘Boomer’ Valerii (number eight)
Sharon ‘Athena’ Agathon (number eight)
Not On Board
HUMANS:
President Laura Roslin
Gaius Baltar

Tom Zarek
Ellen Tigh
Tory Foster
Romo Lampkin
TOASTERS:
Leoben Conoy (number two)
D’Anna Biers (number three)
Simon O’Neill (number four)
Caprica Six (number six)
Is there anything we can derive from looking at the role list this way? Lore people- can you tell us about any factions or interplay between these two groups that Golden the Coward might have brought over into the game??
[secret role] Might be human. Might be cylon. Might be stationed on Galactica. Might not. Who really knows.
