General tabletop games discussion

I've definitely stepped up how much I'm enjoying board games in the last little while. It started with the concept of Legacy gaming which has just made me so much more enthusiatic for board games full stop.

I decided to join Kickstarter and make me first ever pledge because of a board game I liked the look of, called Mothership.

Really looking forward to this one. I think it's going to be awesome.

Cool. I enjoy a good game of Catan from time to time.

Re: General tabletop games discussion

Having spent a lot of time helping out with the rules of the game Mothership, I really do think it's going to be a great game.

So, basically, I'm pimping/advertising for people who might want to buy it, because I don't want people who might think it is as cool as I do to miss out... pre-orders are going to close in two days. There is no guarantee it will get a retail version, but also in particular the very cool custom dice and silver embossed asteroids will no longer be part of the game or separately purchasable after that point.

You can get pre-orders, and read about the game (in the "Our Story" tab) here:

Re: General tabletop games discussion

Power Grid is fun.

I've gone a bit overboard with the tabletop game buying recently :p but it's so much fun.

It's difficult not to go overboard myself. :p We haven't been that bad lately, actually, but I'm sure a phase will come again at some point.
It happened when I discovered Kickstarter...

It would have to be, like, a Syndicate convention.

Re: General tabletop games discussion

Another excellent Kickstarter game that I couldn't resist - build your own theme park, take down other people's theme parks.

This one looks very well designed.

Re: General tabletop games discussion

I just got Dixit this year and its quite fun, except that I discovered thinking of good phrases is amazingly hard!

I'm buying so many board games at the moment that I don't know where I'll store them all. But it's worth it. Unfair, that I linked above, could end up being one of my favourite games ever I think.

How good one is at Dixit is entirely proportional to their brain commonality with the other players.

You can be terrible with one group and great with another.

Got it for my nephew at Christmas. It's good, but we haven't won yet.

I have never gone for systems that remove my boxes, even though they are technically a storage nightmare. Instead, I'm going to design a shelf especially for them.

This time it was my choice and i went with Above and Below. I really really recommend this game. It is a great blend of worker management and role play. So much fun, especially if you get into using voices and so forth when you read the encounters. I could not speak highly enough of this game. :)
The sequel, Near and Far, is even better in my opinion. And it is available with an expansion of sorts on Kickstarter right now.

I got Near and Far for Christmas and I LOVE it! We did add a house rule though because we found that if someone just rushes through and throws camps out all over it ends the game too quickly for anyone to play any kind of strategy. It's kind of a good way to lose friends. So now we play it so if you build a camp on the map it ends your turn.

Otherwise a fantastic game!
Interesting house rule. I've seen it that you can't place a camp when you defeat threats, for similar reasons. It's definitely hard to build a strategy (so is Above and Below) because it's hard to trace how others are getting points (or could get them) versus yourself. I always end up way too slow and can't do the storylines further away from the city as fast as others can.

I got Gloomhaven and it could easily become an obsession. It's soooo immersive. But the box weighs more than my 16 month old does.

Good luck. I’m about 40 scenarios in, it’s still good times.
