I'll also have a period of limited activity coming up (next weekend vacation in Gatlinburg, woo!), so I should pass on the prefect thing as well. Though I have been spending an inordinate amount of time on Internet politics groups, so maybe I am qualified? :P

Ah, MP, always wanting to talk mechanics :P I can see where you're coming from; if we were able to identify a strong dueling civ, we could put him or her up against the suspect for a better chance at a death. However, and this is important, the rules for warriors say "most likely to win in a duel." It's not a guarantee, it would seem. On the negative side, that strategy would identify good NK targets for the baddies. And if we try to get two baddies in a duel and succeed, one of them is destined for death :feb:

However, the civs have many more warriors than the baddies. So picking one from each list (suspected civs and suspected baddies) for each night might actually be a good call.

I agree, but that's assuming we have two really good baddie reads on any given night. If we pick a known or highly suspected civ at random, we have a 75% chance of getting a warrior, which puts us in pretty good odds for a fight.

And thats assuming our civilian read is right too.

So you are counting on the read being right, the civilian being a warrior, and the dice liking you. Are you sure those odds are that good?

While if you vote for two baddie suspects, you are diminishing the effects of the duel while focusing on one variable: the quality of your reads. If they are good, you have better odds of lynching a baddie.

I don't think that can be calculated, but I think the later sounds more likely to work.
Yes, but civilian reads are more likely to be right. So if we get that factor correct, then we only need to pick one baddie, the most high-quality baddie we have. We don't need to go scraping for evidence for a second suspect every time.

I agree that volunteers should be more effective late-game. Once all the treasures come into play, civs can become more dangerous in duels; again, this runs the risk of NK targeting, but how else will we know how to take advantage of said treasures?

Also, I understand MP :sigh: The game is emotionally draining, and I wish you the best of recovery.

Re: Romance of the Three Kingdoms [Day 2]

Back from vacation, finally catching up a bit on all of this. Glad we got Dr. Wilgy, and also glad that the case against MM is developing. So far, however, what's most struck me as suspicious was Jan.
Jan wrote:I would like to see one out of Metalmarsh89 and Turnip Head gone. I think I'm voting both.
Why?
Jan wrote:They're the loudest out of everyone else. I was actually considering JJJ as well, but this message sent to the GM smells of a scumplay. Idk.
Volume itself is a pretty meaningless criterion for a vote. Sure, you can argue that high posters are trying to avoid being seen as UTR, but you can also argue that they're simply active baddie hunters. Without other factors, high activity should be seen as a mutual trait. Misreading the message as scum could just be confusion, but not checking the roles to find that night power seem more like careless play to me.

Continuing to read, will post more thoughts as they occur.

Linki w/MP: My gut read on Sorsha is bad. Suggesting ideas and then not taking them seriously seems suspicious, and I find two instances of that.

Re: Romance of the Three Kingdoms [Day 3]

Alright, finally got time to sit down and work through this thing. Thanks for keeping posts under a thousands per day, fam :P Very glad the MM suspicion turned out, and I'm not surprised by the JJJ prefect kill. Kind of surprised INH and Scotty haven't been attacked yet, but then again, INH hasn't been much of a force in the thread. Some of my thoughts thus far:

I really liked nutella's defense against MP. I thought the second point, where she called him out for misrepresenting her attack on Dom, was particularly cogent. MP highlighted the "annoying" part while ignoring the meaty "sufficient content" and "voting behavior" reasons. That kind of deliberate misdirection pings bad to me.

I think LoRab's read on TH is very good. There's opportunity for WIFOM, but TH does seem too chummy with MM at the start, and I think "Or I could always vote myself so that I can duel the marmot and bring honor to my home." is a big red flag. It would be a way to take a vote out of play for a teammate in a seemingly selfless manner. Also, I see a possible motive for the immediate JJJ nightkill. JJJ asks why TH has beef with MM, and TH just shrugs it off with the silly "He made rude remarks about the size of my ancestors' bellies." Killing JJJ could be a way to eliminate followup questions today?

I don't like Nerolunar just kind of shrugging off my criticism of his D2 votes. The distinction between "random" and "impulse" votes seems spurious, especially when he says random is "being indifferent about the voted players" and then that his impulse votes were based on Timmer and BWT being "careless and uninterested." I don't get excited to vote for players who seem uninterested; carelessness is a slightly better criterion, but he provided no specific evidence. Can you back that up from thread posts, Nerolunar?

Jan continues to seem more baffled than someone should be. "Why wasn't anyone killed?" has plenty of reasons, and it's worth conjecture on why. That's the second time Jan has said something that seems to show a carelessness with thinking through the rules.

Re: Romance of the Three Kingdoms [Day 3]

Dom wrote:Boomslang, does a careless player mean an evil player that needs to be kept on the other side of the wall?
I'd say a careless player needs to be carefully vetted until we can figure out what's going on :goofp: Case in point is Nerolunar. "I guess you could say I am guilty of saying the same thing, which I kind of am  Ugh. I am a goddamn hypocrite." I really don't like this defense. If you're calling your own behavior out as shady, you're asking us to trust your civility on nothing but your word. I agree with the punishment of BWT's self-voting, but that's about it.

Meanwhile, Caps continues to dig himself into a hole. "I didn’t expect anyone to actually vote me," he says, after claiming "I would be comfortable being voted for." Why even say that in the first place, then, if you weren't prepared to shoulder the consequences? I really don't like that back and forth.

Following up on my D2 suspicion of Sorsha, I haven't seen anything to change my mind for the better, and there are a few things that change my mind for the worse. "I don't know if I'd have voted for prefects at all" is a third instance of being flippant about the game. Claims to be "ok with an MM vote," then self-votes and puts one on the absent INH. I see someone trying very hard to avoid making waves, and I don't like it.

Linki w/Scotty: I like the idea of following the WIFOM through its conclusion, but...
Linki w/Rico: UHM, indeed.

"Something about him feels wrong". I never ever like that justification. It means literally nothing and opens up the door for baseless accusation. Totally insubstantial claim posing as substance.
Fantastic catch. Very fluffy, and it gives DDL the flexibility to jump in either direction on the TH discussion. If they're teammates and a TH lynch looks preventable, he could say, "Nah, that was nothing" and vote elsewhere. If the lynch train has no brakes, he could say, "I still have that gut feeling, so I'm going to vote TH" and perform a bussing maneuver. DDL, search your feelings and give us something better to go on.

Four hours is still a chunk of time, and for once I'll be able to stick around through the end of day. Right now, I'd say my leading suspects are TH and Sorsha. I think we should call the big WIFOM bluff that LoRab identified, and as I posted recently, my initial suspicions of Sorsha have intensified over the days. That's not what I meant. I am a hypocrite because I voted timmer because of reasons(not being able to understand the game and the different arguments being thrown around) I exhibit myself. It wasn't really a "defense" more like an elaboration of my previous vote. I don't think I am acting "shady" - more the opposite by doubting my own point of view about things. If you disagree, let me know. I think you reached a little here with your interpretation.
But you still made the vote, and you still say that you didn't make it for good reasons. If we can't trust you to make informed, useful votes, how can we trust that you're working the best interests of the town?

I think people are finding some behaviours that are quite normal from people to be bad.

I also was going to come in today saying I found rico bad (after all his analysis, his votes weren't good), but then he got NKed so... I guess not.
I agree with you about TImmer, but I'm not quite sure where to draw the line for a possible Sorsha save. I'd say the turning point is probably vote 35; Mac voted Timmer to put him up 7 vs. 5, possibly in response to Russ's Sorsha vote. Ninja voted Timmer and TH, then Rico on vote 42 (and he's excused). DP and DFaraday might be worth minor looks as the people who put the final votes in Timmer's coffin

Re: Romance of the Three Kingdoms [Day 4]

Thanks for revisiting that Rico post, DDL. Since he's dead, I'm gonna do the look at DFaraday that he mentioned. Which is pretty easy, considering the dude only has 12 posts.

Early game is unremarkable. Nominates prefects for RP reasons, then dislikes duel volunteers but thinks they indicate player personality rather than alignment. In Day 1, sets up a little antagonism with Dom over his posting gimmick; notably, he also casts shade on Sorsha, then drops it in favor of MM. Day 2 continues the Dom fight, saying he's flip-flopping over Bass. Really, Dom continues to be his white whale for the rest of the thread. Launches a Timmer reaction on Day 3, and we see how that turned out.

So really, we don't have much to go on. The hyperfocus on Dom reads ever so slightly bad, as it gives him an excuse to not evaluate other cases if he knows they'd be for teammates. He did mention Sorsha early, though, so I'm curious: What's your current read on Sorsha, DFaraday?

My own fantasy football draft is coming up in a bit here, so I should vote as well. I continue to like nutella's defenses, and I think voting that way is wrong. I think I'm going to put a vote on DDL and see where that leads. The host post, combined with his manipulative observations about TH and me, give me enough suspicious to take him seriously. For the other vote... let's go with Caps, who has slipped back under the radar today. Perhaps he doesn't feel as confident about his duel chances now, for whatever reason.

My friend, I am not accusing you. All I've done here is made a measured, non-accusatory observation based on YOUR actions - as is my job in this game (or so I am continually being told). Your defensive reaction above is not helping. I said I didn't know what conclusion to draw from your actions so instead of your thinly veiled OMGUS, maybe you care to indulge me by explaining your actions? Thank you.
I explained my actions in the thread. I voted MM for prefect because he got me into the game, and I voted for him to duel because he requested to do so and it was Day 1. The two votes were made with different levels of information. If he had actually been elected prefect, I may not have voted him to duel.

And don't play innocent with me. You know as well as I do that every post in a game of mafia has a purpose. "Personally, I didn't vote anyone for Prefect about whom I had doubts" suggests, however slyly, that my own actions weren't entirely forthright. My "defensive reaction" is trying to get you to admit that purpose in your post.

If I wanted to get really tinfoily, I'd say his teammate's ability to "summon apparitions" means that we killed a ghost MP... idk.

A thought: maybe Caps and MP are part of the same team, and Caps's push to get himself lynched earlier was an earlier attempt by the team to pull whatever ability nonsense they just pulled on MP?

That's not what I'd call "going quiet." And his content doesn't seem to change much from one phase to another—there's a general will to fight, first vs. JJJ, then vs. Eloh. I agree that there's not much to go on, but I'm no more suspicious of him than of the other low posters at the moment.

Just for shits and giggles (and because DDL is totally bad), here's every post where Bass mentions DDL.
Bass wrote:Hey DDL, do you think most of the the people who are mafia are laying low or are they being active or... Are they in that sweet middle area flying under the radar?
Bass wrote:
DDL wrote: I didn't like Russ's recent "Congratulations on lynching Wilgy, guys!" It doesn't feel honest.

I think I'm voting for him today.
Didn't he post something first, then followed up with "oh and good Lynch" or was that someone else.
Bass wrote:
MP wrote: I would be willing to throw out the following slight town GTHs:

Boomslang
Dragon D. Luffy

Could change at the drop of a hat, but so far I'm feeling OK at what they've brought to this thread so far. Anybody else have some GTHs yet?
Do you have a mafia reads yet, even just something that pinged you?
Bass wrote:
DDL wrote: I just don't want to see, 5 cycles from now, someone going "I trust Jay. He had been leading town since the start!" Because that is where the danger lies.
:srsnod:
So that's not much to go off of. But no real disagreements, an early affirmative, and a late softball question to let DDL control the tone of the thread. Nutella, do you have anything else to add?

You evoked consternation on the first day for your prefect choice procedure, but since haven't done too much of interest. I don't like your fairly random Day 3 vote explanation, but I do like your questioning of Blooper. And you were very quiet on Day 4. I get... a very, very slight bad vibe? Mostly from this:

You don't think they're bad, you just want them gone? :eye:
Which is a little manipulative, and MM proved to be a good choice.

Well, I have to vote, and I haven't seen anything to change my mind. Bass is right about the quietness, but then again, it is a holiday weekend. DDL and Caps again.

Re: Romance of the Three Kingdoms [Day 7]

Argh, sorry to Caps. That should've gone better. Meanwhile, I'm in the middle of hell week for the musical I'm playing in (woo, Hair!), so my abilities to process are limited at best. Continuing to vote DDL until we can actually lynch him... I think a Bass lynch would be illuminating, but I'm not confident that he'll actually flip bad. So voting leetic to trim some of this dead weight.

Whew, I should not have missed that previous vote. Stupid life. And I'm really rather angry at myself for misreading DDL. Sigh, can't win them all.

Regarding this poll, my gut tells me it's not a rez. Chinese mythology is pretty big on ancestor spirits staying ancestor spirits, IIRC. The role reveal is a good guess, and in that case, I think I'd vote JJJ. That option would put the most possible posts into context.

I think the bigger issue is that you've won two duels in a row and presumably have some pretty kicking power-ups. Even if we did think you were bad, I don't know if anyone could take you out in a fight. Might have to come back to you once we've knocked off a few other people.

I also just wanted to point out that our little green hostpost friend has had a frankly terrible track record. With the JJJ reveal, his very first post of "JaggedJimmyJay" is incorrect, and DDL flipped civ; we can't seem to lynch Bass, so no way to evaluate that claim. I suppose the posts have to come from a civ role... now I'm wondering who.

Well, I'm leaving to go to an out-of-town concert (Explosions in the Sky!) and have to vote. So... going with Elo for not explaining her vote on Dom after repeated questioning, and inh because I think there's something to Quin's approach.

Boomslang, dear child, your fealty was to the nameless one and also his rodent spirit animal. You must let your words free.
The prefect votes were eons ago in game time, and I really didn't give them much thought. As I said, I voted MM for out-of-game reasons and INH because his banner looked cool :P You can choose to believe me or not, but that's the truth. You'll also note I was first to vote INH yesterday, which turned out pretty well.

Zuo Ci wrote:It is my instinct to believe the testimony of the man Boomslang. I did however report this occurrence to the most esteemed mathematicians in China to satiate my curiosity. Their oracles inform them that an accidental declaration of fealty to two members of a fringe faction would be impressively improbable. I would welcome consideration of this notion, though I freely release myself from such a dialogue. I commune with spirits, not with metaphysical symbols.
Improbably, perhaps, but not impossible. As my father, himself a wise old sage, once said: "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while." With over thirty players at the start of the game, the odds would be worse for someone not to vote two baddies as prefects, assuming everyone voted more or less randomly.

Scotty makes a good point about Daisy as a Turban... will have to give that some more thought.

Voting Blooper and Simon real fast before I have to play music. Blooper because I think she's been too blase about the votes that have come her way so far, and Simon because of his consistently stated dueling preference.

I apologize for not keeping up with this game, but this was closing weekend for Hair and I spent pretty much all of it either playing, cast partying, or set striking. So going to even up the vote with one on Bullzeye and cast another for Blooper, because I don't want her off the radar.

Re: Romance of the Three Kingdoms [Day 14]

I think Zuo Ci's analysis of leetic is spot-on. If we remove the last of the completely inactives, we can close the book on that entire line of reasoning for the identity of the YTs. I'll be placing a vote there today.

As for my other vote, I feel like a lot of my suspects are still in the poll. Blooper, Simon, Bass... Mac's desperation and rapid posting read as genuine to me; I can't see a baddie drawing all that attention to himself, especially in a game where inactives have gotten to coast so easily. Which leads me to question indiglo for continuing to jump down his throat. Will do some reading of that tomorrow.

Re: Romance of the Three Kingdoms [Day 16]

I feel like I'm being set up. Literally the last post of the previous day was Scotty calling me out for a rushed vote, and then he gets NK'd. Of course that's going to throw suspicion my way.

And I realized that we didn't finish our inactive hunting—we need to vote Aragorn. Jan was absent from Day 3 through Day 12 before Aragorn took over. There's also some negative back-and-forth between Aragorn and Scotty buried in Day 13, long enough ago that he might have thought able to get away with the NK now.

Well, y'all are barking up the wrong tree with me. If you want another name, pick Simon; Zuo's objection seems to be that he'd be hard to kill, but I've had suspicions throughout the game, and if it needs to be done it needs to be done. *votes DFaraday and Simon*

Who is cock? This guy. :P But seriously, good game everyone, and thanks much to Epi. I didn't think much about the civ factions because I did not receive a single night PM the entire game. Kind of shocked, tbh, but I guess I kept my radar level at just the right place.
