The Syndicate

The civilians are divided into three factions: Shu, Wei, and Wu. All three kingdoms need the Yellow Turbans, the Nanman, and Dong Zhuo dead to win. However, only the faction with the most living, non-recruited members will win.

At the end of each Day, the two recipients with the most votes will have a duel to the death. The victor will take the place of honor. He will be protected by bodyguards that night and will claim his choice of prize. The loser is eliminated and revealed.

Leader Class
Each faction has one leader. Leaders have unique abilities that aid their respective factions. In a duel, they roll one six-sided die.

Warrior Class
Warriors are the strongest roles, and most likely to win in a duel. They have no innate special abilities, however. They are the most common class. In a duel, they roll one eight-sided die.

Strategist Class
Strategists are the weakest roles, and most likely to lose in a duel. They do, however, have special abilities. All main factions have one strategist, except Shu, which has two. In a duel, they roll one four-sided die.


Shu – Virtue





Liu Bei
Leader
The leader of the Shu faction, Liu Bei is a believer of virtue.
Has BTSC with Zhang Fei and Guan Yu.



Zhang Fei
Warrior
This drunken, fiery warrior will do anything to protect his sworn brothers.



Guan Yu
Warrior
The bearded legend is one of the greatest warriors in China.



Zhao Yun
Warrior
One of the five Tiger Generals, Zhao Yun serves Shu with honor.



Ma Chao
Warrior
Known as Ma Chao the Splendid, he is one of the five Tiger Generals.



Huang Zhong
Warrior
An elderly general, highly skilled in archery, he is one of the five Tiger Generals.



Wei Yan
Warrior
Though originally a mere foot soldier, he became a famous general.



Pang Tong
Strategist
Pang Tong likes to use trickery to confuse the enemy.

What follows is an account of the three chosen prefects, whose appointments coincided with the rise of the Yellow Turban revolt and the emergence of the menace from Nanzhong.

Jagged Jimmyjay, whose courtesy name was Mehniposts, was from the province of Rym, where he had established himself as a man of wisdom. People sought his advice on many subjects, and he was especially consulted on judicial matters. However, he was a man known equally for his impropriety. When invited to have tea with an administrator, he wore improper clothing and used incorrect dishes and utensils. He unknowingly said things that caused embarrassment for the administrator’s wife. When it came time to appoint new prefects, his supporters asked that his clumsy behavior be overlooked in favor of his jurisprudential insight.

In a neighboring province called J’tm lived a shrewd businessman named Scot Ty. Before continuing, there is a proverb from that province that says, “Count on your ass to have less to count,” which comes from when Scot Ty was concentrating on his suanpan while riding a donkey through the village. When something spooked the beast, the preoccupied rider lost control and was deposited into a merchant’s tent. Many of the merchant’s wares were ruined, and Scot Ty had to provide a recompense. Despite this setback, Scot Ty engaged in one successful venture after another, and his political supporters all said that his business accomplishments made him suitable for the office of prefect.

It is now time to turn to Insert Namhere. He had a notorious reputation in the province of Me-Dia for his wanton vanity and anger. It was said that the wife of some official, who was rumored to be a witch, had cast a spell on him as a child, such that whenever anyone spoke his name in his presence, he became more powerful than before. Because of this, he demanded that all in his house speak his name whenever anyone was in the same room as he was. One day, a servant insisted on using his courtesy name instead. Insert Namhere ordered the servant taken outside, where he was whipped until he had said his master’s name twenty-five times. Because of the prodigious fear in the land over Insert Namhere’s accumulated power, he was made a prefect so that he would be appeased.

The following chapters will unfold what becomes of these three men.

The death of Ahuinan, Meng Huo’s third ravine chief of Nanzhong, resulted in a series of misfortune for the farmers of Hsiaop’ei, because it was reported that Ahuinan was cut down in the vicinity of Hsiaop’ei. The misfortune happened all in one night. A band of distraught farmers sought the advice of one of the elders in that region, a learned man who had fathered seven sons and outlived all of them.

The first farmer approached holding a dead rooster. “Armed men came and slaughtered our chickens. They left behind feathers that do not belong to any of our animals.”

A second man came forward and produced the head of a goat. “Armed men came and slaughtered our goats. They left behind yellow cloth, which we do not wear.”

“This is a good omen,” observed the sage.

“How can you say this a good omen?” asked one of the men of Hsiaop’ei.

“Consider that both the barbarians of the south and the mystical rebels have visited your people in the span of the same night, and all of them are accounted for.”

No one has been killed. It is now Day 2. You have 48 hours and two votes each to decide who will be in the second duel.

It is time to return to one of the prefects, Jagged Jimmyjay. When he heard of the slaughter of the animals the Nanman and the Yellow Turbans had carried out, he burned with anger. He called his servant to fetch his weapon and follow him into the forest. “Build a fire and then fill this kettle with water from the river there,” he said to the servant. Jagged Jimmyjay watched as the servant followed his orders. “Now boil the water over the fire,” he said. “And I will return.” The servant watched Jagged Jimmyjay run further into the woods with his weapon in his hand. Jagged Jimmyjay returned holding the severed head of a Nanman barbarian. Then he grabbed the kettle from the fire and doused the water all over his servant, who cried out. “Why do you cry out?” Jagged Jimmyjay asked. “It’s still cold.”

When report of this reached the Nanman king, he called for the head of Jagged Jimmyjay, and offered a handsome reward of exotic treasure. For this reason, even those who once supported Jagged Jimmyjay turned against him. They bound him and brought him to the main village and executed him. They gave Meng Huo what he wanted, and in return, he promised to leave their people and fields alone for a year, telling them that mercy is an exotic gift that is rare even among the Nanman. In this way were the people deceived.

When the people’s emissary was returning with the unfortunate report, he found the body of a stranger by the river. He observed this as an omen of more bad tidings to come.

We must consider the fate of Rico Chet at this time. He lived among the Nanman as someone exploring their culture and land. His plan was to return to the land of his birth in order to provide valuable information to the prefect there, who was planning to invade the southerly jungles.

Meng Huo invited the stranger to a banquet, and at first Rico Chet declined. Meng Huo scoffed at him: “What true warrior declines fellowship with other true men?” So for fear of offending the king, he went to the feast. As he ate, though, Rico Chet began to grow ill. Meng Huo saw this and taunted him. “What is wrong? Can you not stomach the food of Nanzhong?” The Nanman in attendance laughed and watched as Rico Chet writhed in discomfort, as Meng Huo’s men had poisoned his food.

The reaction to Rico Chet’s death will be made clearer in the next chapter.

The last chapter told of how Rico Chet fell to the menace of Meng Huo. This chapter shall relay how Tur Niphead met the same fate.

Tur Niphead had been at the same gathering as Rico Chet, and he trembled with anger at how Meng Huo had treated a guest. Plotting retaliation, Tur Niphead gathered a small army and prepared to bring Nanzhong to ruin.

One of the men who was considering his plot against the Nanman king was Son Eji, a mute. Tur Niphead agreed to the meeting.

Son Eji gave him a map and traced with a long fingernail, showing Tur Niphead the most efficient way to attack Meng Huo’s forces. Tur Niphead made obeisance and expressed his gratitude for the information. The information lead to his defeat, because the way Son Eji pointed out was in fact well-guarded and supplied. Tur Niphead and most of his men were cut down in the attempt.

Son Eji met with Zhang Bao the next day. “You have done well,” Zhang Bao said to the relief of the mute. “As I promised, I will make your tongue regain purpose.” Zhang Bao made a strange motion over the head of the grateful Son Eji, and soon the latter began choking. Zhang Bao proclaimed, “Your tongue will indeed regain purpose. You will choke to death on it and no one will know of our scheme.”

Whether or not Zhang Bao escaped after this cruel deed will be made plain in the next chapter.

In the last chapter, Zhang Bao had repaid a friend unkindly. He found refuge in a village south from his last victim, and there he remained until he regained his strength.

In that very village, Glorfin Del was sent among the Nanman to pacify their barbarous ways. He brought with him all manner of civilized customs, furniture, and kind words. “My friend, thank you for welcoming me.” There was a terrible irony there. Glorfin Del’s dialect made “My friend” sound like a Nanman battle cry, and the barbarians descended upon him before he could realize his mistake.

Rey Was labored every day in his fields, hoping to be rewarded for his diligence. He knew Zhang Jiao would repay him kindly. Zhang Bao saw his work and thought he could make him work harder if he got his brother to make the weather hotter. Rey Was labored all day, and grew faint, and that is how he died.

This continues the evils the Yellow Turbans inflicted upon the peasants.

When the Nanman menace became too much to bear, a woman named Sor Sha took it upon herself to trek through the jungles of Nanzhong in order to gain intelligence regarding their methods, culture, and plans. The elders of her city ridiculed her because she was a lustful woman, and could not control her lechery.

Sor Sha successfully made it to the Nanman king’s most secretive lair. It when then that Meng Huo himself brought her into her palace and offered her the company of one of his captives, Da Wei Bao Yi, whom he kept in a labyrinth of hedges, walls, and strange beasts.

When Meng Huo described Da Wei Bao Yi, Sor Sha became filled with desire, and vowed to find this hidden man. She never came out of the maze. It is unknown what became of her or the subject of her desire.

What fate befell the evil Nanman king will be relayed in future chapters.
