Re: SAW [Week 34 - "Fish Out of Water"]

Re: Fish Out Of Water - 3/5

I can't say I'm the world's biggest Progressive Rock fan (well, apart from a handful of bands who rule the Progressive rock world as far as I'm concerned--King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, Can and obviously Yes but to a lesser extent...), but I did appreciate this and was surprised I hadn't heard it before. I'm picky with my music and my progressive rock listening days are numbered, and not an every day occurrence, cos you gotta be in that mood. With all that said, it was pretty decent and definitely dug and appreciated the jazz fusion inside (yay jazz yay). I loved Silently Falling , but Lucky Seven was very jazzy and maybe my favorite. Great use of the bass throughout, I mean it's Chris Squire, but apart from those two tracks, can't say it really stood out for me and Squire was never a lead vocalist so I could see the vocals ruining the tracks for some people. It's probably decent to listen to as evening background music, nice ambiance, a little moody, a little chill out tempo'd. It's a warm 3.5/5 or a solid 3/5 depending on my mood I guess.

Re: SAW [Week 34 - "Fish Out of Water"]

Re: Timber Timbre - Creep On Creepin' On

So, the vocalist reminded me a bit of M. Ward in the first song. I dug it. I love M. Ward, I love his distorted version of love songs, and I thought I found something similar in Timber Timbre. Changed a bit as the album went on; wasn't crazy about the second track at all, but the album has some catchy tunes like Do I Have Power and Woman--and obviously Bad Ritual is an amazing opener. It's definitely a little gothic-y and dark and perhaps that just isn't my thing if it isn't implemented by PJ Harvey ala White Chalk. I don't think the band will change my life, but a 3/5 for this album for sure. Was easy to listen to, and enjoyable in some parts, but I wouldn't necessarily hurry back to listen to it again.

Re: SAW [Week 36 - "Take Care"]

Joanna Newsom - Ys

I remember the first time I listened to Ys, it was rather wordy, pretentious, and most notably unrelateable to my current mood. Her vocals were also almost child-like and didn't reflect a mature woman: the kind of vocals I usually lean towards. I put it aside then listed to it a couple years later and oh boy. There were tears involved, it moved me in a different kind of way.

I'm going to echo what everyone says, I think you want to read the lyrics at least a few times as you listen. Newsom is a lyric master and probably the best person to create music that sounds and tastes "beautiful". Did I mention her lyrics are incredible once you grasp them? Only Skin is maybe the most beautiful song ever recorded by a female artist. It's a magical album and one of my favorites so easy 5/5. I listened to it before sleeping last night again. Perfect <3

Re: SAW [Week 36 - "Take Care"]

I think my next hip hop album recommendation will be oldschool, by my favorite rapper ever: Del Tha Funkee Homosapian and my favorite album by him: I Wish My Brother George Was Here.

I'm convinced there's some secret rap and hip hop fans, even if Drake is not everyone's cuppa tea. I honestly wanted to share it because people overlook Take Care and call Drake that annoying "Hotline Bling" rapper (which is a good tune too tbf). He's got amazing flow imo, and I enjoy him immensely, even if he does fall into the rap/hiphop/pop category.

MovingPictures07 wrote: Tue Nov 21, 2017 11:53 pm As far as more modern hip hop goes, Shabazz Palaces is where it's at. Fucking love them. I'll nominate an album at some point probably.
I'd recommend Billy Woods, too. He's a modern mastermind. I mean he's not brand new, but someone that came out in the early 00s era then disappeared, and came into more prominence I'd say post 2012.

(no racial / sexist slurs in first song. Second song has two occurrences of the n-word for people who have a problem with that)

And here's a collab with one of the best MPs in the biz imo, Aesop Rock (contains no racial slurs, but one use of "bitch")

I was going to nominate an album by him before Drake, but they're not entirely on YT unfortunately. But really, Today, I Wrote Nothing (2015) is one of the best contemporary hip hop albums and proof there's still real authentic east coast rappers out there.

Also, he formed the rap duo Armand Hammer with Elucid in 2013. Their debut, Race Music, is also pretty amazing too.

Re: SAW [Week 36 - "Take Care"]

Since I'm late to the party, and I can surely listen to more than 1 album a week, I'm going to go back from the start at nutella's recommendation and have a listen through past albums.

The Family Crest - Beneath the Brine submitted by [mention]nutella[/mention]

So I've never heard of The Family Crest before, and I'm not a huge listener of orchestral music which is what the band labels itself as (orchestral indie rock?) so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it, but I like to think they have more indie rock in them with little flashes of whatever the hell orchestra is in this sense (I'm going to go with symphonic rock of some sort instead), which brings their music to life. Really frigging enjoyed this, and by the third listen through, I decided I can adequately rate it.

The album infuses a lot of different tecniques and genres I'd say, some jazz vibes on some tracks even, good song writing and quite a few paces in here. Sometimes I get flashes of Brandon Flowers, sometimes some The Decemberists, sometimes a bit of Elvis Costello, sometimes some Paulo Nutini or Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. All of whom I love in different quantities ftr. So many instruments, love the trombone, cello, trumpets, violin and drum use. It's very cool to hear in indie rock music and gives it a refreshing edge. The music feels upbeat and new. Lyrics are very catchy, the whole album is something easy to sing along to in fact, and the lead singer's voice is quite pleasant...clear and easy to listen to without grating on your ears.

I'll give this an easy 4/5.

Re: SAW [Week 37 - "A Charlie Brown Christmas"]

Thanks G-Man, that's a great review! And you'd be surprised, but I agree a lot with your last point of having rated it higher had he cut some filler tracks out of there. Your top album picks were pretty agreeable, though Marvin's Room is another important track for me and HYFR and Shot For Me are also noteworthy in my book. For what it's worth, I gave it a 4/5, and that's also because I actually did relate to some of the songs hahaha. I wanted to suggest more rap, and pop rap seemed liked the safest way in here. I should have definitely listened to my better instincts and gone with something with a little more funk than pop and it would have been better received. Not all rap is about bitches and hoes. I have been an avid hip hop listener for about 13 years now, so I can guarantee there's a lot of content that any average Joe can reason with too, where it's just fun every day stuff (not even going to try and recommend political hip hop on here, ever, ever ever ever lmao).

Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Stuart Duncan, Yo-Yo Ma - The Goat Rodeo Sessions

really nice listening experience, and there's obvious talent in there but it got a little bit samey to me so it's something I'd listen to while working on something else and don't need to be distracted by the music, I guess. If I gave it all focus, it would lose points and get a bit tedious for not keeping my attention. I liked how the album sounded almost unrehearsed though, like a huge improvisational gig. I dug that. I'll give it a 3/5.

Re: SAW [Week 42 - "Somewhere to Elsewhere"]

CunninLynguists - A Piece of Strange

man, this takes me back to 2007. A piece of genius production and lyrics was unravelled before me by my dear friend at the time, Sunshine. A story being told, section by section. Amazing, well thought out collabs too with Immortal Technique, Tonedeff and the amazing Cee Lo Green. It was deep, and it really hit me and one of the reasons why I love rap. It's funny because Sunshine swore to me back then that the album would be a classic in 10 years and guess what, it is considered a classic today! Impossible to even pick a favorite off this album, they're all epic tracks and the fact they're all together is what makes them even more great: Never Know Why, Nothing to Give, Caved In, Hourglass, The Gates....ughhhh. I liked their funnier debut too, but this album was their introduction to the serious world of hiphop where people actually began to give 2 shits about them, underground hiphop critics and mainstream hiphop critics alike. The best southern hip hop album released in the last 15 years? yea. absolutely.

5/5 and a top album for me

data.index - weird, believed my computer was making weird noises until I realized this is what I'm listening to
data.simplex - felt the music in my throat?????? is that normal?
data.duplex - slightly easier than data.simplex, despite being duplex. sounds like a receipt being printed and never ending.
data.triplex - definitely easier on my ears, louder and feels better. a little more wholesome. but annoying as fuck with no conclusion.
data.multiplex - went back to higher frequency, I don't like this tone. My ears don't like it. pretty sure if I had my rottweiler here he wouldn't either. it tries to incorporate some of triplex, but those frequencies ruin it.

ok I need a break.

Re: SAW [Week 51 - "A New Nature"]

I loved Los Campesinos! back when I discovered them in 2009. That's 9 years ago and my taste has changed a little bit but I can still appreciate their music. This is probably LC's most upbeat album musically speaking (I haven't listened to their 2017 release...maybe another submission for ColinIsCool). There's some twee pop in here mixed with the indie rock that is actually inoffensive and pleasing with decent synths and arrangements. I loved the lyrics, none of the cliche stuff you expect to hear and I hope everyone read along to the lyrics cos it does make a difference. Despite the more upbeat kind of music, it's still filled with sad songs about heartbreak or death or whatever like on songs What Death Leaves Behind, Avocado Baby and Cemetery Gaits.

I wouldn't call it a 5/5 album, but I'd give it a strong 3.5/5 even leaning 4/5 after repeated listens. Would have been an easy 4/5 9 years go for sure.
