Oxford dictionary says themself is not widely accepted and shouldn't be used in formal contexts.

Don't worry about that noise, "themself" is the most cromulent way to refer to a single person in the given context.

I think the problem is that "they" is becoming common for unknown third person singular, but it still 'feels' plural. So in this context I would use "they", but because it feels plural a singular "themself" feels off even if it is perfectly unacceptable.
