nutella wrote: Wed Jan 24, 2018 11:16 pm Hey guys here's another thing that might be fun. The Player Archetypes from Magic the Gathering can to some extent apply to player styles for different games/gaming in general and I was just wondering if they might apply to the priorities of different mafia players and hosts.
The basic archetypes are
Spike -- just wants to win. @JaggedJimmyJay says he will do whatever it takes for his faction to win so he is probably a Spike.
Johnny -- likes clever combos.
Timmy -- likes plays that have really big effects.
Each of these has some subgroups outlined on the wiki page I linked which are more specific and I think could apply even more interestingly to mafia (use of flavor, mechanics, social interaction, etc)
There's also a separate axis of Vorthos, who cares about lore/flavor, and Melvin, who cares about mechanics.

I recommend reading some of the descriptions in the article, it's a pretty interesting approach. (Also I think Timmy is a little harder to apply to mafia, but it can definitely apply to big gambits and such)

Personally I think I lean most toward Spike but I love big plays and cool mechanical combos as well (in any type of game, not just mafia)

Additionally this TVtropes page lists these as well as a few other paradigms for classifying gamer types.
I think I trend towards Johnny. I like role interactions and so forth when creating, hosting and even playing games. I also like to set up moral dilemmas for players and see how they handle them. Does that count as torture...? lol
