New game!!!! Let's go.

i've never played a Mortal Kombat in my life, can anyone who has describe the realms? Are there any associations between realms and certain characters?

Earthrealm is the mundane sphere, the netherrealm is the underworld, the outworld is the great void beyond. Chaos and orderrealm are the realms of competing energies, and Edenia is the blissful state at the nexus of all of them. I've also never played these games and just made that up. What are you going to base your vote off of?

Votes in this poll are not changeable.
I legitimately haven't played in a mafia game with a day 0 poll in years.

The way it used to be was that sometimes certain factions or roles would gain a small early advantage from certain poll choices, and sometimes certain roles would have information on which choice would be the best. I can't see Epig doing that though.

I can see epi making the different locations having implicit benefits to certain roles though. Like earth sphere being good for earthen punchboys, and the nethersphere being good for demonic types and zombie pigmen, edenia is probably good for like snake people or maybe celestial angel dudes or something etc etc etc.

or maybe the poll is just an inconsequential time keeper with no actual real game meaning

Re: Mortal Kombat Mafia [Day 0]

I'd agree that the visit realm options would probably effect the roles from their associated realms.

I think Jay's explanation makes sense. Especially if there's historical precedence for it. When I think of Epi's hosting philosophy I think of the word "balance", and secret reveals are less likely to effect the balance of the game then like.... bonus votes or extra protections or whatever else. Plus with this many secrets it makes sense that there might be a mechanic to reveal them over the course of the game.

Re: Mortal Kombat Mafia [Day 0]

there was this pokemon mafia game on hedville a million years ago where the day 0 poll was to decide which city gym to go to first, the different gym choices all corresponded to certain advantages that would be given to certain roles, but it ended up being super obvious which players were which role because of which option they chose, and i think like 3 difference civilians ended up getting civ credit out of it because they fought super hard for their corresponding gym choice.

that's exactly the kind of thing i can't see Epi doing

Re: Mortal Kombat Mafia [Day 0]

JaggedJimmyJay wrote: Thu Jan 11, 2018 2:29 am In this case the poll is worded for travel; we're literally visitng a realm. In that regard the flavor might be awkward alongside my theory. That these visitations occur in a specific order though suggests to me that we'll find our way to each of them eventually. In the event that this somehow provides a benefit to the Outworld, it may be better still to ensure that is covered earlier than later.
there's also a possibility that over the course of the game, we'll get similar night polls to decide the overall effects of the day phase. we might end up visiting every realm at some point, and each realm might carry some sort of small hometeam advantage or something, like "a random player from this realm will have their vore made to be worth +1 or something"

Re: Mortal Kombat Mafia [Day 0]

"In what order shall you visit the realms?"
it seems like we will be visiting multiple places, so either this poll determines the order of the visitations based on number of votes on each poll item, or it only chooses our first location, and we'll have to pick the other ones later during future night times.

If it's the latter there is less consequence because we can just like... choose whatever and then base our future choices accordingly. if the night poll(s) reveal secrets then that should be p self evident.

i think either way keeping the outworld in the lead makes the most sense? if visiting the outworld puts their dirty laundry out first then hell yeah, if being in the outworld during a day phase provides the outworlders with some sort of tangible advantage (like an extra vote or something?) then i'd rather they have that on day one when everything's pretty much a crapshoot anyways than on a later day when they might be able to better take advantage

I missed this question before. Jay is a player who, in recent history has tricked me enough that I now try to prioritize reading him asap. I've also noticed that, in general, reading one of you or Jay seems to lead to having a read on the other sooner or later.

I see both of you putting early day 0 effort into throwing sticks in people's spokes, but nothing too hardlined yet, which is understandable cus it's day 0 and 2/3 of the game hasn't checked in yet.

I guess that doesn't really answer the question

Not really. These are the initial "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" cases. A suspect nonetheless though.
I don't see anything you've said or done as being worthy of a civ or mad read, to me it's more of a "Quin seems lackadaisical and carefree" read, that might factor into a read later given different behavioral context.

Quin was asking me about why I hadn't commented on the suspicion against him, 'the only real suspect'. it was a comment on his questjon, since I hadn't really seen much suspicion put towards quin yet it seemed odd that he'd list himself as the top suspect. Odd in a "quin is being a goofball" way.

I'm waiting to judge until "Kyle knows" makes sense.

Claiming that Speed and I would be able to corroborate his thing would be an insane gambit if false.

Claiming that Sloonei 'is an indie role but probably the one that isn't last man standing and Speedchuck and Kyle can
back me up ' is such a specific and early claim that I can't even conceive of a way that it might be a lie without being suicidal.

My first impression is some kind of secondary secret role power is at play. Since every role has a secret power, technically speaking, using a secret power to put an indie role on blast isn't necessarily alignment indicative. However... Pulling any gambit this early in the game at all might be a sign of good. If this were a baddie secret power gambit it might make more sense to save til later in the game.

So.... I will wait and see and judge accordingly.

so what? i'm rude now

I guess I'm just a little surprised by Made's brazen tactics in this game.
What's the difference?
vocaroo Made (maf) was much more um.... spongy(?) with his reads. he was a non commitmental man sitting on a fence tossing soft undercooked spaghetti at whoever passed by on the nearby street. early on he seemed set up to go with almost any lynch comfortably. he had a couple unique suspects that he went after more than others but never particularly strongly. He also set up a fake claim gambit in the late game when things were particularly dire.

compared to that version of made, this version of made seems to be front-loading his risk-taking. he doesn't seem as cautious here as he did in vocaroo. claiming that Sloonei is an indie role is not soft spaghetti, that's some pretty hard spaghetti. this made also has already made a rainbow list already on day 0 which doesn't fit into the "vocaroo maf made" template.

that's my first impression at least. and different doesn't even necessarily mean "good". the thread dynamics in the vocarko game were also pretty unique and iirc Made wasn't even fully present in the thread until like 72 hours into the game.

I agree the outworld seems like the best starting point so we can potentially peek at those secrets, is there any consensus on where would be best to go second? Re: Mortal Kombat Mafia [Day 0]

based on their team name I'd assume all the outworlders are from the outworld, of the indie roles, Ermac is also from the outworld and Kano is from earthworld. So I guess that would make earthworld a decent second location, all the other roles are civ and I don't see any benefit to revealing their secrets publically. So.... Earthplace seems like a decent second destination, assuming literally any of our assumptions about how this poll works are correct.

I'm also like.............. really really bored of this topic. Like... I'm the one who brought it back up and I'm already boring myself. There's so many cooler things going on rn.

[mention]Epignosis[/mention] I and several others are locked out of the poll, if voting via post is acceptable then I would like to vote for earthrealm

Pirates mafia was probably my weakest town game of all time, and the only reason I had town credit in mountains mafia was that I had a highly public civ role and a distinctive typing style that I didn't manage to hide well enough.

I also haven't had a mafia role on this website in recent history so it seems strange to make this generalization about my tone.

You made lots of mistakes in Pirates. Like several I would normally want to push for a mislynch over yet when I looked around for who I could frame, I didn't think I could pull it off. You just seemed so darn genuine.

yes. I chose you and the other 6 because I've never played with you before. I'd like to know your mafia background and some basic facts that might explain your behavior in general.

for an example of why this is important.... I'd expect a player who's never played with Dr. Wilgy to find different behaviors of his suspicious than a player who's never met him.

Alternately if a player I assumed didn't know anyone here suddenly had a strong read on another player it would be important to know that those two players both came from the same discussion forum and have played multiple games together.

well.... I'm pretty sure. I can't recall exactly what games I might have played with birdswithteeth but I know his background. I'm pretty sure I remember him from the old revmaf days. maybe earlier.
I have been playing since 2011. I've played primarily on RYM but also a bit of Mafiascum and Somethingawful.com and over the last couple of years exclusively here. Haven't played since May.

birdwithteeth11 - Played a few games here, have very little recollection of meta.
Dave - Never played with.
Dom - Played several games here with Dom and have had significant interactions with him.
DrWilgy - Played several games here with Wilgy and have had significant interactions with him.
Elohcin - Played several games here with Elo and have had a bit of interaction.
Glorfindel - Played a few here with Glorf and have had a bit of interaction.
Gumshoe - I may have played one game with Gumshoe but relatively unfamiliar.
Jackofhearts2005 - Played a few games together with not much significant meta.
JaggedJimmyJay - Have played dozens of games with Jimmy as we were both from RYMafia. I taught him everything he knows. :haha:
Kylemii - Limited exposure.
lapluie - Might have played a game but not sure.
Long Con - Played quite a bit with Long Con. I think Long Con has a stronger feel for me than I do for him though.
Made - Played a little bit with Made but not a lot of meta to go by.
Marmot - Played heaps with Marmot and have had several significant interactions.
novaselinenever - Never played with.
nutella - Played quite a few games with nutella.
Quin - Played a shitload with Quin.
sig - Played heaps with sig.
Simon - Relatively unfamiliar with Simon but have played a couple games.
Sloonei - Sloonei is RYMFam from way back. We called him Darth Sloonei.
speedchuck - One or two games together.
TonyStarkPrime - Very limited exposure.
So.... you've been around. :p

birdwithteeth11
Dom
Glorfindel
Gumshoe
sig

are the players who haven't checked in yet. looking at the sign up thread a most of of them signed up early so they might have forgotten about this game.

sig mentioned in the sign up thread that he'd have low participation in this game due to school and he also signed up like 3 days ago, so he'll probably show up at some point

Gumshoe, birdswithteeth, and Dom haven't posted anything anywhere on this website since november.

Glorfindel has posted in the recent holiday threads but he's also had a tendency of absence lately. He replaced out of Chicka Chicka midgame and was replaced in mountain mafia without posting anything. He signed up for this game in September.

It's wonderful (so far) being back here with you all and it looks like an amazing game. I see we're already at 11 pages so I guess what I'm pleading for is:
A) your patience and understanding as I try to catch up and immerse myself in this game and
B) A clue about how you respond to someone by quoting their post. Somebody asked me a question and when I reply a name keeps appearing and when I press 'Return' it inserts some bizarre stuff in the middle of my post - sorry, again, I've not played since the redesign of the site. Thank Ye :)
Glorfindel!!! We finally meet. I replaced in for you in Chicka Chicka and won :)

It's significant because we are trying to not lynch town.

What's your alignment?
chaotic good :guitar:

I asked him about the significance of his statement because he said I wouldn't understand the significance. The basic premise of the game mafia is something I do understand because I've played mafia at least once before so I figured it was something beyond that. :p

I figured his statement would have to have had some sort of significance beyond the obvious face-value. Like an inside joke or a tradition or something, based on the other responses it seems like I was right.

You weak pathetic fools. You have come to Outworld first?

We will be certain to show you our utmost hospitality.

Our acid pits will be refilled. Our spiked arenas will be sharpened. You will fight, and someone will die in mortal combat.
it also seems like maybe this was a bad thing? at least now we know..

It doesn't seem like any secrets have been revealed either.

well i just mean that like... the whole "spikes are gonna get sharpened" and "we're filling our pits with acid now" stuff, like that kinda stuff doesn't sound really promising.

it seems to support the "locations give their associated characters an edge or a boon" thing than the "locations may give us insight into the nature of their particular associated characters" thing. unless the flavor text is non-indicative, which is possible.

just something to keep in mind if we get to choose again, it might be good to try and figure out what world has the most civs

the only time you've mentioned me negatively was after my first post for "trepid introductory nonstance", is that it?

also, while you're here, can i ask for a (brief) explanation of your read on Made and Made's read on you, from your perspective?

You've seemed focused on the mechanics of the game so far. I'm wondering what people have to say about that.
"focused" seems like a little bit much. i was interested in the day 0 poll at the time because it was relevant and i haven't played a game where there was one in quite a while. I think that there's a lot to be gained by revealing mafia and indie secrets as soon as possible so we know what we're up against.

can you answer my questions about Made please? linki- oh there it is

Since then, however, I've only had questions for him and none of them have been answered (I don't blame him for that, he's just been absent.) I can't offer a take on his read of me because I can't see where it comes from. He implied that he perceived me as feeling heat on Day 0, but I actually felt like I had achieved an inordinate amount of townie cred for that phase of the game. I don't know where any of his reads come from right now, and that's problematic. Maybe the boldness of the Day 0 rainbow was Made's principal motivation. He just played a solid scum game in Vocaroo but had his credibility destroyed when game mechanics all pointed to him. Maybe he drew another scum role in this game and wanted to come out swinging.
well.... sure, but your initial town read on Made came 2.5 hours before his day 0 rainbow list. you said you had a townread on Made shortly after Made came forward with his "pinkish shade of red" comment about you.

so i'm curious about your treatment of that read, it's strange to me that you in particular were so quick to decide that that was a good look for Made with only his confident claiming that you were probably the least dangerous indie role to use as context.

which causes me concern because you haven't verbally denied anything that made has said about you. which is troublesome behavior in a game with a lie detector. you haven't commented on his read on you other than to explain that you don't know where it comes from, which is technically true.

it seems like if Made has any kind of intel, that it indicated to him indie or at least not-civilian. Even if Made doesn't have any sort of intel, you still haven't responded positively or negatively, which bugs me because the only players in a mafia game like this who benefit from that sort of ambiguity are players with mafia roles and indies and... one of the indie roles needs to make sure 12 civilians die in order to win.

so that's my 2 cents on that

i don't think anything of it really.... i've been killed a few times recently and put into consideration a few other times for early murder for seeming too genuine, Jay wanted to kill me in phenon, i died night one in vocaroo. and apparently jack and dunya have had conversations about how much easier i am to kill that to lynch.

If you'd like me to deny anything Made has said about me: I am neither a Loner role nor a member of the Outworld team. I don't see that there's anything for me to respond to directly besides that. He's not elaborated further than the existence of his read.
and you'll stand by this denial?

I'm interested in Made's thoughts still, and in his cryptic weirdness, but we're cool for now.

I don't actually care that much about the lie detector for this, and it's not like they could let us know anyways.

If you're a dangerous role and Made knows something about you but is giving you a pass for possibly being the less dangerous indie then... I want to make sure that that can't happen because it could cause problems down the road.

If Made notices any contradictions then I'm sure he'll tell us about it.

that's the conclusion I drew from "ask Kyle" "wait not Kyle yet" "actually ask speedchuck"

I assumed he had some kind of one-shot secret power that would get Intel on a player and then send it to two other additional players or something.

Well... part of it is definitely that Made decided to make me part of it, by including me as one of the people that would (eventually?) be able to back up his read on Sloonei. I ended up looking back through both of their posts and interactions and in general I just still feel like there's something off about it. for now i think it can be put on the back burner until made drops in.
