Re: Random~
@G-Man - the threat to churches of becoming taxable entities is on the horizon in New Zealand as well. It's a direct result of their being people who are anti-religion who do not see why religious entities should be allowed to enjoy tax-free status.
But I think it would be very bad for policy reasons, because the reality is that the religious (and I'm not saying only Christians here) are often responsible for a larger percentage of social work, funded through income that the church makes, than other sectors of society. The reality of taxing churches is probably to leave the marginilised and poor worse off.

Hey all
Just want to let everyone know who hears about the earthquake that me and my family are safe. My city (Wellington) felt it pretty strong and did take a decent amount of damage in some areas, but there haven't been any serious injuries or deaths here.
Closer to the epicentre, the town of Kaikoura which is a very picturesque tourist town seems to be completely munted (the New Zealand term for being completely fucked by an earthquake) and many roads are going to take a lot to repair. There are a couple of deaths in the south island too, sadly.

Re: Random~
A quick update on all things earthquake.
I've ended up 'off work' all week, which is really code for 'working from home'. My building is safe but clearly some of its pipes ruptured, and we have no idea what the damage is or where in the building. We have what they are calling a 'staged reoccupation' from Monday.
They've just announced a building a block from my work building is going to have to be demolished. It's possible it won't be the last.
We are very lucky that this quake wasn't closer to Wellington at this size, in many ways. We are also lucky it happened at midnight on a sunday. We would likely have had fatalities in the city if it had come during the day, given the extent of damage.

Re: Random~
Great review, llama. Really good.
While no legal system is cheap, there's no doubt that the American legal system in particular is set up in a way that allows the wealthy to bury others in legal costs and make it fiscally impossible for them to fight. There are any number of things I would do to fix the American legal system, but it's so hulking and lumbering that it would be a very large challenge.
Access to Justice is something that policy analysts in the Justice space grapple with regularly. Access to Justice is represented by a cheap and affordable system, but it's also represented by the ability to present all evidence, to appeal matters when you believe decisions made against you are wrong, etc... all of which increase the cost of participation. It's a challenging balancing act.
