Re: What do you be readin'?

Last year I started a quest to read every single book that my wife and I own. I'm still working on the first book:

Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary- Tenth Edition (1996)

I may have bit off more than I can chew.

I tried to read that novel a few years ago. Every so often I used to go after a long book for the sake of reading a long book. I gave up after 20 pages. Maybe it's because I had no context to go on nor any prior experience with Russian literature. Something just wasn't clicking with me and it seems really mundane and hyper-detail oriented. Seeing you guys suggesting the importance of the translator, I wonder if that was part of the problem too.

Re: What do you be readin'?

I've been reading Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (1996) for almost exactly a year and a half now. Last night I finally hit and blew past the halfway point. It's all downhill from here, right? Right? :scared:

No. You have R-S-T on the back 13.

Have fun.
R and T don't scare me much but P and S are the two longest sections. It only becomes insufferable when I get stuck in a long stretch of words with the same prefix. I can see that happening in both P and S.

Still reading the dictionary. Getting close to being done with the letter P and closing in on page # 1,000. Here's my update post if you're interested.

Then you might enjoy reading the dictionary. I started in January of 2014 and I just finished the letter Q last week.

Re: What do you be readin'?

I'm still reading the dictionary. I'm still on the letter R. Life is busy and there are Olympics to watch, so I haven't actually read a page during the month of August yet.

I have been reading through the Republican National Convention platform little by little. I plan on reading through the Democrat's, Libertarian's and Green Party's platforms as well and comparing and contrasting them before election day.

Still working on the dictionary. Here's my latest update. It's been almost a month since I read a page but I'm determined to finish the dang thing this year. I'm currently in the early pages of letter S.

Getting close to the letter T though. After that it should get easier.

Re: What do you be readin'?

I don't see myself buying an e-reader device. I love the feel of a book in my hand, not some flat, thin tablet. The smell and feel of the paper and the sound of the turning page cannot be replaced for me.

I'm past due for a dictionary update. I'll work on that this weekend.

Back in the reading habit again. Still fighting through the dictionary. I'm into letter U now though, so it's pretty easy sailing from here on out.

Interesting words from January:
-Times sign
-Today
-Toss
-Tragus
-Trump
-Turnspit
-Turtle/Turtledove

This latest post is actually my update through the end of February. I'm currently on the second and last page of the letter X.

Interesting words from February:

-Verbalism
-Verruca
-Vigintillion
-Violaceous
-Vodka

Three of the five words in that list weren't recognized by spell check. :p

Re: What do you be readin'?

:hyper:

I finished reading the dictionary!

I figured out my original start date, so I managed to finish with a page-per-day count of greater than one (barely). My dictionary is 1,600 pages long. I finished on day 1,596.

I am relieved.

Charlie Blackmon wrote: Mon May 28, 2018 10:02 pm What did you make of the word, "torture?"
Meh. A French word by way of Latin roots. It probably didn't even register with me. Latin-derived words were so plentiful that it was boring. Sometimes MW would try to force non-Latin-derived words into a connection with a Latin word. That irked me every time. It was like the father in My Big Fat Greek Wedding who claimed he could trace any word back to Greek.

Book #4: The Bedford Handbook

Epignosis- have you ever come across this composition guide? I may be interested in your thoughts on a few sections of this book. I have a few other books about writing that may be fun to dissect. They're all waiting in the wings though.

I understand the book you reference covers things like resumes and what have you, but really, at this juncture, almost everything you would need in that regard can be found online anyway. Personally, I hated the books we had to buy in college for this nonsense every semester (Such as).
Strunk & White is on deck. I may save my copy of On Writing for when I’m ready to start on some fiction. I have a college text on writing fiction that I didn’t enjoy when I took a creative writing class. I may drag that one out around the same time as King.

Reading update for The Bedford Handbook.

The questions I posted on Facebook:

To my educator friends at all levels:

1) Which pre-writing exercises (listing, freewriting, clustering, etc.) do you recommend most to students and which ones do you think yield the best results?

2) Do you tell students to revise and edit while they write or after they finish a draft?

3) Should college freshmen already know how to write a competent essay or term paper?

4) Do you feel that it is ever too late for a student to learn how to write according to the standards these kinds of guidebooks consider proper?

The Bedford Handbook, Installment #3

My question for Facebook friends was:
Alright educators, the ESL trouble spot section was good food for thought, but what's it like outside the ivory tower of academic book publishing? This text devotes a fair amount of time covering verb confusion and article confusion. What ESL struggles have you seen the most on the front lines?
Please share your answers too.

Re: What do you be readin'?

Wow, I've been slacking in giving you guys updates on my reading. Here's six months of catch-up all at once:

BOOK #4- The Bedford Handbook
Update #4

Update #5

Bedford Handbook Review: Thank God I Don’t Have to Write Research Papers Anymore ( gave it a solid B to B+)

BOOK #5- The Elements of Style
Review: If Prescriptivism Is Wrong, Then I Don’t Want to Be Right (I gave it a solid A-, possibly soft A)

BOOK #6- The Idea of the Holy
Intro Post

Review: ‘Mysterium Tremendum’ is Not a Harry Potter Spell (I gave it a B due to clunky moments of translation and copious amounts of wordiness)

BOOKS #7-12- The Bible and More
Intro Post

I've been sitting on an update post for a few months now but I needed to re-read the first four chapters of Reading the Old Testament before I could give it a fair shake. My goal is to finish that post over the weekend.
