[ENDGAME]: Film Directors.

My obsession with cinema began when I was 11. It has since swallowed me whole.

For Your Consideration:

Some of us love cinema in a legit erotic way. For those people, I present the following.

For nearly forty years this story has given faithful service to the Young
in Heart; and Time has been powerless to put its kindly philosophy out of
fashion.

To those of you who have been faithful to it in return

...and to the Young in Heart --- I dedicate this mafia game.

Film Director Mafia

This will be a traditional-format game, but with an inappropriate amount of fun.

Civilians
Image
Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse Director: Has BTSC with Tarantino.

Image
Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse Director: Has BTSC with Rodriguez.

Image
David Lean Director of epics, he knows the value of taking one's time during shoots. Steady wins the race. 2 lynch pardons.

Image
George Cukor American Director of Classic Comedies. Can target a player to reference a romantic comedy in each post they make.

Image
Howard Hawks Classic Hollywood Director. A silent era director that fully embraced and utilized sound, he can be flexible. May adopt a player's power at night.

Image
Jean Luc Godard New Wave Director: Can send one message every day period to protege Truffaut.

Image
François Truffaut New Wave Director: Can send one message every night period to mentor Godard.

Image
Busby Berkeley Glitzy movie director and cinematographer: Can distract another player with glam and gold. Role blocker.

Image
Sergei Eisenstein Soviet Film Director and Godfather of Montage. Can post a recap each day.

Image
Fritz Lang German-Austrian Expressionist: Can creatively post his thoughts every night.

Image
Darren Aronofsky Another auteur who can find BTSC with David Lean using math, a common theme in his films.

Image
Pedro Almodovar With passion and desire being two of the prevalent themes of this acclaimed Spanish director, he may cause 2 players to miss the vote due to the manifestation of their carnal desires.

Image
Stanley Kubrick Realist, perfectionist director and genre hopper. He can once reshoot a day period.

Image
Cecil B Demille Known for his flamboyant showmanship, he also successfully made the transition from silent to sound. Each night he searches for Howard Hawks. If he finds him, they gain BTSC.

Image
Orson Welles Excess and the demise of Don Quixote left the former prodigy weak. However, in his early days, he is stronger. For the first 5 votes, his vote will count as 2. And 0 thereafter.

Image
John Waters Transgressive and ecclectic cult film director who often features Baltimore in his films. He can send The Baltimore FootStomper out after a player each night. That player will be muted during the day period and blocked during the night period.

Image
Ingmar Bergman Evocative Swedish film director who often had religion as a theme in his films. May grant amnesty to a player 3x, which will result in his/her removal from the lynch that day.

Mafia - The Brotherhood (BTSC). Odd Night Kill.

Image
Coen Bros. Jewish brothers who often use the same actors in their films. Can call upon the Golem to protect a player.

Image
Duplass Bros. Mumblecore creators. Inspired by Cassavetes, their super-realism shows the nuances of every day life.

Image
Wachowskis. Siblings known for their multi-part storytelling.

Mafia - The Hacks (BTSC). Even Night Kill.

Image
Michael Bay Known for explosions over plot, this director, can distract civs and turn their minds off (role block).

Image
Uwe Boll Known for video game adaptations, he can twice lock the thread when his work gets criticized.

Image
Roland Emmerich Natural disaster movie guru, his over the top films do not garner much critical acclaim.

Re: [Day 0]: Film Directors.

RULES.

1. No unauthorized BTSC (behind the scenes conversation).

2. No role outing or information dumping. If you have a concern about this or whether a prospective post is questionable, please feel free to PM me or the game mod, Epignosis. Remember that it's not actually better to ask forgiveness rather than permission.

3. Epignosis is our game mod. If you feel overheated (in a bad way) by a fellow player or host (that's me), take it to him. That's what he's here for! If you have concerns about my hosting or just generally any issues, he is a great resource. But remember, although I might seem like pushover, Epi the Enforcer will kindly make sure this is a tight ship.

4. Off-topic conversation is not discouraged in my games (imagine that), but please use Off-Topic green. There's an OT button in the toolbar above.

5. Non-players can post off-topic only, but please use Non-Player blue. There's an NP button in the toolbar above.

6. Dead players can post off-topic only, but please use Dead Red. There's a Dead button in the toolbar above.

7. I will be posting in this color. Please refrain from using it.

8. Don't be a jerk.

9. No double targeting. This means you cannot choose the same person to target on subsequent nights.

10. FUN is a requirement.

11. No one is Supatown.

Re: [Day 0]: Film Directors.

Yes, your favorite director may not be in the poll. I previously had 210 options but had to delete a ton.

Day 0: Film School Begins

Image

Everyone gathered around. This was their moment to learn something about the superior art of cinema in a tasty, palatable format. Would their minds explode with pleasure?

There was only one way to find out.

You may post. It is now Day 0.

Ava Duvernay is absent, and Kathryn Bigelow is spelt wrong which made her hard to google, and Nora Ephron made "Julie and Julia" which I hated, and while I loved "The Virgin Suicides", "Marie Antoinette" was an abomination that should've revoked Sofia Copola's filmmaking liscense, so that leaves me with Susanne Bier, of whom I have never heard, but whose films I may now watch just because I now feel an intimate connection with her because I just typed a long and unnecessary paragraph justifying a vote for her. :noble:
I truly believe Susanne Bier is the most gifted filmmaker alive today. I had Penny Marshall and others on the list too (Catherine Hardwicke, foreign directors, Mira Nair etc). but you can only have 50 poll options.

In that case, I am legit excited to watch her films! Where should I start? The one she won the Oscar for? (Keep in mind I am a cinema neophyte and may not appreciate some of the subtler/more technical aspects of filmmaking...

In a Better World won her the Oscar, but I loved After the Wedding in a nearly erotic way. It's being currently remade by Hollywood, who also remade her film Brothers.

Cinema neophytes are welcome!

Hitchcock was a big omission -- I didn't put any of the characters I had in my game in the poll (which was an easy way to delete the poll options from 210 to 50), but I forgot I deleted him. He might pop up somewhere later k.

Vic/Ric - You are just remembering wrong, sug. My living room is Hitchcock themed. I should take pictures. He's actually my favorite director (I refer to PT Anderson as my favorite living director because I am ridiculous).

There's a great new documentary out about Mel Brooks you might fancy called "Make a Noise" that I really loved. It spans his whole career, and gives tidbits on the making of many gems, including Young Frankenstein and The Producers. Delicious.

Day 1: A Piece of Cake.

There were so many directors to learn about! How would they make it through all of them? Would they discuss the use of color in films like Punch Drunk Love? What about the use of light in the 1932 version of Scarface? Or the use of sound in Dassin's Naked City? It was an almost overwhelming ordeal.

Someone walked forward into profile. A corpulent, yet dignified gentleman. He cleared his throat.

"For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake," he said.

He pointed to a trunk.

"I believe in that trunk may lie a corpse of dubious origin," he said in a mid-Atlantic accent.

"Well, this got real quick," said Metalmarsh.

"No one hurt a kitty, did they?" asked A Person.

He said: "For me, the cinema is not a slice of life, but a piece of cake."

It is now Day 1. You have 48 hours to determine who put the junk in the trunk.

Kubrick can "reshoot a day period" once in the game. Does that he reverses a day, annulling the lynch, or just simply that we get two day periods in a row?

The Duplass, Wachowskis and Emmerich seem to not have any powers? Is this true?

Uwe Boll - what does "lock the thread" mean, exactly?

Thanks, and items of interest to throw out there:

The Coens Bros have been picked to lead this year's Cannes jury! :fiesta:

Also, in light of Welles being in this game, his unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, starring Peter Bogdanovich, Dennis Hopper, John Huston and featuring all kinds of filmmakers like Claude Chabrol has actually now been completed and will screen at Cannes in May on Welles' 100th birthday!!!
Kubrick's role - more annulment in scope.

True, they do not have any powers, per se.

Lock the thread, meaning no one can post for a period of time.

I was hearing about Jason Segel playing David Foster Wallace at Sundance and that was very intriguing. And also a new Duplass Bros series with 10 episodes. So stoked.

Yeah i think so, if you have your forum time set properly. It's just 7 hours behind for you if you're using EST though, so just subtract 7 from the time.

Re: [Night 1]: Film Directors.

Day 1: John Huston, We Have a Problem

Image

Chances are if you've ever seen Treasure of the Sierra Madre, it changed your life. Directing his own father and Bogart to cinematic success, John Huston proved yet again that he was an impressario of the silver screen.

Try: http://historynewsnetwork.org/article/157864 to learn more about this Hollywood magnate. He directed his own daughter Anjelica to a heavily-lauded performance in The Dead.

"Wait, that's not true!" shouted BirdWithTeeth11.

"But it's right there in the textbook!" replied Made.

"I don't like this," said A Person.

Llama said something intentionally provocative. No one listened.

"Well, let's rewind the reel and hear that part again," said BirdWithTeeth.

He put his hand over the projector to stop it, but his sleeve got caught and it yanked his arm at the socket. As Birdy was bleeding to death, he wondered if Devin Townsend had ever directed anything.

Image

BirdWithTeeth has been lynched. He was Howard Hawks.

It is now Night 1. You have 24 hours to send in your PMs/night actions and vote in the night poll.

This is the historic Tampa Theatre. It was built in the 1920s. Llama and I saw Citizen Kane there in August.

SAME!! My friend and I reenact that scene all the time!!!!
The nitrous scene was so so so so SO funny! I have a feeling that Bill and Kristin ad-libbed a lot of that.

My biggest regret in life is that I never have a twin brother. Logan's the closest I have to do that.

My second biggest regret is that I am not actually Kristin Wiig.

Hello my sweets.

Has anyone else been voraciously following the news outta Sundance (besides Timmer, obv)?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/sund ... -festival/

A lot of good documentaries coming out of this fest. Can't wait to see them all. Last year's breakout hits were Whiplash and Boyhood, so let's home for features at least that strong.

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.

Day 1, Redux (Once More With Feeling):

"I feel like everything is a fantasy," said Vompatti.

"You wish," said A Person.

"Did you know that Frederico Fellini was a master of ethereal fantasy meets grounded reality?" said Timmer.

"What does that even mean?" asked Metalmarsh.

"Let's watch this girl dance," said Ricochet.

So they did.

"She was beautiful, and I'm sad she's dead," said Roxy.

"My teeth hurt," said Vompatti.

"If you like circus films, Fellini did La Strada," Bass helpfully offered.

"Oh, I should check out that documentary about Fellini himself," said Dom.

"Oh no, the decadence has killed A Person!" Long Con shouted.

"Is this what they meant by requiem for a dream?" asked SVS.

A Person has been lynched.

He was Darren Aronofsky.

Re: [Day 1]: Film Directors.

What was the very last film you saw?

Mine was Luis Buñuel's Tristana (based on the novel of the same name), starring the effervescent Catherine Deneuve (did anyone catch her in the recentish film Potiche? I freakin loved that).

You've probably seen his classic short film Un Chien Andalou, but have you seen L'Age d'Or? Whoamg.
