Harry Stephen Keeler [ENDGAME]

“Yet this theory of mine was untenable for two reasons: First, it partakes too much of coincidence - only in the detective stories of badly harassed authors do such unmotivated occurrences take place.”
- Harry Stephen Keeler, Find the Clock

SENSATION!
Get ready for Harry Stephen Keeler Mafia!
The game of crazy coincidences and contrived plot twists set in 1930s Chicago

"Author Harry Stephen Keeler (1890-1967) wrote more than 70 books of what he called "webwork" fiction — mystery novels with highly complex, luridly bizarre and nearly inscrutable plots." - NPR

Disclaimer: This Mafia is based on books originally written and published in 1930s America. They are a product of their time, and may contain certain implicit attitudes, racial or otherwise, that would be considered offensive today. Please try to appreciate that the intent of the game is not to offend, but merely to remain true to the source material.

Re: Harry Stephen Keeler [DAY 0]

Day 0
Image
SALE!
Casimer Jech, celebrated dealer in oddities and antiquities, is pleased to announce that on this Tuesday, March the 17th, his Curio Shop located on 22nd Street is having its first - and last! - ever sale. Ancient relics from the Far East! Rare and valuable treasures of every shape and size!
One day only! Supplies limited!

Please select which item you would like to buy. Only the first person to vote for each item will receive it.

How Items Work

Some items can be used to confer benefits, some cannot. Some items will be consumed when used, some will not. Most items can be stolen. When someone is lynched, all of the items they possess go to the people who voted for them, in order. So the first vote gets the first item, etc. When someone is NKed, whoever performed the kill gets the item. Items may not be voluntarily traded between players.

Day 0 will last 48 hours or until everyone checks in or until I get tired of waiting. One of those three.

Re: Harry Stephen Keeler [DAY 0]

Question for the thread:

Everyone has now checked in, and it took a lot less long than I anticipated. I can start Day 1 today, but on Friday I have a party I have to go to and will probably not be able to end the day on time. Do you want me to go ahead and do that with the knowledge that we may have a 72 hour Day 1, or do you want to hang out in the no-pressure Day 0 for the full 48 hours?

Re: Harry Stephen Keeler [DAY 0]

Day 1

Image
Everyone exited the Curio Shop, more or less satisfied with their purchases. A few stragglers grumbled that all the best items had been snapped up before they got there. Casimir Jech counted his money greedily, pleased with how the sale had gone, but somewhat annoyed at the motley assortment of ex-customers now cluttering up his sidewalk.

Some people were eager to show off their items, others preferred to tuck them quickly away in their pockets. Blindfaeth unwisely boasted about a claim to future monies.

Amidst the throng, a lone paperboy stood, trying to conduct his business, but with limited success. Out of all the people standing around, no one seemed interested in the news just then. Frustrated, he decided to remedy the situation.

“EXTRA! EXTRA!” he bellowed as loud as his little voice could manage. “Blond Beast of Bremen sighted in Chicago! London of the West!”

That got everyone’s attention. Someone quickly slipped the kid a nickel, and they all gathered round to read the paper. The dreaded Blond Beast was indeed in the city, and sighted in no less a place than - Casimir Jech’s Antiques and Curios Shop on 22nd St.!

Instantly, affability turned to suspicion, as the shoppers regarded each other with fear and apprehension. Could the Blond Beast be among them?

Golden wrote:Zombs - would I fake emotional crap as a baddie? Absolutely. I'm not going to say I wouldn't, I pull out all the stops in this game.

But no, it wasn't faked. I don't mean this in a dismissive way, but I recognise people will take that exchange whatever way they will. What was important to me was only that rabbit listened and understood - and I think/hope he did. One of the frustrating things I find in mafia is that you can't deal easily with that kind of thing out of thread - no-one wants to make the game worse with illegal btsc (and yes, I once tried to resolve a personal issue behind the scenes in that way and it did not work out well. People just believe you are extending the game into illegal btsc.)

Those who need to know that it was real know. Anyone else is allowed to come to their own conclusion.
If something needs to be addressed between players, please let me or SpaceDaisy know and we will act as mediators. Please, don't try to do it yourself, and don't do it in the thread.

Night 1
Image
After a while, Casimir Jech grew tired of all the people loitering around outside his shopping and killing each other. "If you're not going to buy anything else, get packing!" he snarled.

Not wishing to aggravate the old man more than necessary, the group looked around, surveying their surroundings.

Here they were smack in the middle of the Loop in Chicago - London of the West! Across from Jech's shop, Chief O'Toole's police station stood square and menacing next to a sign reading 22nd St. With the Blond Beast of Bremen still on the loose, it seemed comforting to have the police so near, but it also seemed like a good idea to stick together. Who knows what kind of interesting sights and sounds you might encounter by exploring this lively and colorful city? But where to begin?

Blindfaeth has been lynched. He was Simon Grundt.

Re: Harry Stephen Keeler [DAY 2]

Long Con wrote: Llama, do the Celestials know the five items they're looking for? Interesting if they do, because perhaps they would have gone for those items in the first poll.
Only they know whether they know that or not, and what they do know might be wrong (but what they don't know might be right).

Re: Harry Stephen Keeler [NIGHT 2]

Night 1

LizKeen said: "Mr. Fung, do you know if the ivory, jade and amber would be dangerous if they were in the hands of the wrong team?"
Wah Hung Fung, King of Chinatown was most gracious with his answer: "Ivory, jade, and amber are very beautiful substances, indeed, but they are entirely harmless. Have no fear."

Unfortunately, Metalmarsh89 should have probably had a little fear, because while this conversation was happening, he was being lynched in the background.

Metalmarsh89 has been lynched. He was Chief O'Toole.

"Um, maybe we better not stick around here," someone said, sheepishly.

You have 24 hours to send in your night PMs and to vote in the poll.
