An Introduction to Mafia

PLAYERS

Games are made up of a predetermined number of players divided into one of three teams:

Civilians: win by eliminating the mafia and in some cases independent(s)

Mafia: win by eliminating the civilians and in some cases the independent(s)

Independent(s): win by accomplishing an assigned goal, such as surviving to the end or being the last man standing

ROLES

In addition to being assigned to a team, players are given a role with various abilities that impact the game. These roles can greatly vary, but here are a just few common examples:

Mafia Don: Kills another player, eliminating them from the game

Cop: Investigates another player and learns their role or alignment

Doctor: Protects another player from being night killed

Role Block: Blocks another player from using their role ability

Vanilla Civilian: Civilian with no special powers to impact the game

Mafia Goon: Mafia member with no special powers to impact the game

GAME CYCLES

Game cycles are divided into two phases; Day and Night.

Day Phase: Players vote for the person they believe to be a member of the mafia. The person who receives the most votes will be lynched. At the conclusion of the day phase the host will write a post sharing who has been lynched and revealing their role.

Night Phase: Players send in their actions to the host, indicating the player they wish to target with their ability. At the conclusion of the night phase the host will write a post sharing the results of the night's activities.

STANDARD RULES

No illegal behind the scenes conversation, also referred to as BTSC. You should not discuss the game outside of the game thread unless your role description explicitly allows for it. Mafia team members are allowed BTSC, and occasionally small groups of civilian roles are given BTSC as their ability as well.

No editing of posts in the game thread. Here at The Syndicate we have the games forums set up so that players are not able to edit posts, but if a player finds that through a glitch or error they have the ability to edit posts they should never do so. It would be an unfair advantage to one player that happened to see a post before it was edited over another who did not happen to be online before it was edited. As such, once something is posted, it must remain as is. The only people who are allowed to edit are the Game Host and Game Moderator.

GAME VARIATIONS

Open Setup: Game outline is publicly shared, allowing all the players to know exactly how many players each alignment has and what role powers are in play. In this kind of set up it would be prohibited to announce your role to or dump information gleaned from your role ability into the thread since it takes any guess work and strategy out of the game. Open setups favor the civilians since it allows them to piece together what might happen and narrow down who might have which role.

Closed Setup: Game outline is not made public. Players do not know how many roles there are on each alignment nor what roles or role powers are in play. In this kind of setup it allows for players to role claim and false role claim because there is no way for the the players to know if any such role or ability exists. A closed setup favors the mafia since there is no way for players to piece together what may have happened or narrow down who may have which role since they have no idea what roles exist.

Semi-open Setup: A middle ground of the two previous setups. Some information is publicly known and some is not. For example, players may know how many are in each alignment but are not told what specific roles or role powers are in play.
