Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool

Everyone likes Radiohead at least a little, right? What do we all think of their new album?

It has started to rekindle my interest in finding new music. This thing's good.

Identikit is the early standout to me, but I expect every song to have its turn.

It sounds nice after one listen. I think "True Love Waits" will be a favorite when I'm more familiar with it.

Now that it's been multiple listens, I still really like the album, but I've been a pretty big fan of just about every album they've ever done (except Pablo Honey, which I pretend doesn't exist).

I start when I listen to something from the premise that it's not very good and then hopefully that improves from there upwards. :srsnod:

I have been the biggest fan of Radiohead since i was 18. 15 years being uber fan and introducing them to every friend or boyfriend i had (many are fans now). They were with me the end of my teenage years and all my youth (damn, i feel so old :sigh: ), and i was first in line when they came here in 2009 and gave an awesome concert. I still cant get over how amazing the bends, ok computer, kid a, httt and in rainbows are, masterpieces without a doubt. Know all of their b sides by heart.
But still cant help to feel that they last really good album was In Rainbows. I could never get into the king of limbs, and i listen to this last one and it didnt make a big impression. They are talented and a great band no doubt, but they new albums are not doing it for me anymore.

It's far from my favorite, but really solid stuff. I can understand why someone wouldn't like it though.

So I forced myself to enter AMSP into my Radiohead rainbow list rankings, and apparently I think it's my 3rd favorite Radiohead album.

Here's a ranking of the tracks currently, though none of them are sub-par even by Radiohead standards, which are quite lofty. I very much enjoy this entire album.

1. "True Love Waits"
2. "Decks Dark"
3. "Daydreaming"
4. "Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Thief"
5. "Burn the Witch"
6. "Ful Stop"
7. "Present Tense"
8. "Identikit"
9. "The Numbers"
10. "Glass Eyes"
11. "Desert Island Disk"

Ranking very much subject to change.

Second listen. Burn the Witch is still going individually strong on repeat on my phone - apparently I was "daydreaming" when I watched the single video and didn't think much about it, but right now the chorus hooks me alright. Daydreaming simply doesn't do it for me. As far as chronic sad songs go, I think it can go a lot better than this and I sort of don't buy it as much that Yorke should keep serenading me with them, almost two decades after these things actually sounded good; plus the droney bit (which prompts some to throwback at Kid A, I guess) sounds like boar snoring, frankly. Near "albumstopper" for me remains Ful Stop, to mirror Robot Mafia's (wait who) words, I've no idea what's going on, but I dig the build up and during the mid-piece climax, when some of the bass harmony subtly changes, I get actual goosebumps. Contrary to it not getting much love or even mentions, as far as I can tell so far, Desert Island Disk piques my interest, it has a blend of almost prog rock that then switches to a bit of jazzy chorus. I remember liking Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy..., but that's about it. There are a few tracks I actively don't like, either because they sound too heard-before easy mode (Decks Dark) or unpleasant effects (the reverb Yorke-on-Yorke voice mashup on Identikit). It just doesn't hold up in its entirety. I agree it's more open and musical than how much of a "distancing effect", artificial feel TKOL had, and it often tempts to idea of retro styles, retro moods, retro Radiohead.

I haven't listened nearly enough times yet but Identikit is definitely a standout track for me so far. I also like Tinker Tailor, it has a very Kid A sound imo especially at the beginning, and I love the string-orchestral bit.

I went on vacation and came back and I'm enjoying this even more than I did before. Dammit. Present Tense is the new hot shit. There is not a single weak track here.

My general Radiohead enthusiasm has been reawakened as well. Remember how good Reckoner is?
