SAW [Week 64 - "Home of the Strange"]

Syndicate Album of the Week
NOTE: if you didn't express interest originally, you can still participate! Everyone is welcome, just hop in and talk about whatever album is the flavor of the week with us. :)

Original description of the idea:
Spoiler: show
Hey gang,

Since a large portion of the regular users of our fine site here hail from a music-oriented site previously (such as Prog Archives or RYM), I think there's a lot of common interest in the world of music around here. Our tastes are different, but we appreciate music in general. That brings me to this idea described below:

Syndicate Album Ranking and Sharing (SARS :grin:)

The name can be anything. Whatever. Here's how it works.

~ Every five weeks (or so), everyone who wishes to take part nominates an album. Assuming there are more than five nominations, we hold a quick poll to determine which nominations will cover that five week period. Then, each week, we focus on one album. During this week people will have the ability to:

~~~ Listen to the album and talk about their perspective of it.
~~~ Rank the tracks on the album (at the end of the week all rankings would be combined into a group-wide average).

~~~ Make recommendations based upon similar albums or overlapping interests, or whatever else you might want to talk about.
The only rule for nominations would be that the album must be accessible by legal means, as in Spotify, YouTube, or whatever else. If we can't find it, we can't listen to it.
Lemme know in the poll what you think of this. If you have related ideas about what else can be done with this activity, you should share them in the thread. :)
I'm glad to see this getting some support. :)
If y'all like, we can just start throwing out nominations now. I'll say we can take nominations until 2 PM EST on Saturday (could be extended if necessary). If we have more than 5 nominations by that point, we'll do a poll to determine which 5 we will start with and in what order.
Please, no more than one nomination per person. I'll get us started:
Nominations:
Crowded House - Woodface
Corinne Bailey Rae - The Heart Speaks In Whispers
deadmau5 - > album title goes here <
I would do a non prog nomination and then I would be voted down :p but most of my music listening takes place in a different space.
Oh well, why not.
I don't know why you need a nomination and voting phase. No offense, but I think that's silly and going to keep you bogged down. Get the first x number of people to recommend one album each and use that.
I mean...what are you voting on if you (presumably) haven't heard the offerings before? And if you have heard them, doesn't that make you biased?
I don't know. This would be more interesting if you just invited people to list one album, and it goes in the queue.
And a week? How long does it take you to listen to a record a few times and form an opinion? It took me over a year to appreciate Jethro Tull's A Passion Play, but I get the impression most of you won't be giving us A Passion Play.
My two cents worth.
I'd be fine with skipping the nomination/poll. My only intent was to prevent 80 nominations from coming in and leaving us with an immensely long list. If it's capped at whatever number, maybe still 5, then sure I don't object to that. All in favor say aye.
As for the duration, I don't see a viable alternative. It definitely takes more than a week to get properly acquainted with some things, but it isn't reasonable to spend that much time on one album for an exercise like this. It's only meant as an introduction to the music anyway.
Or you may have meant to suggest that a week is too long?
If so, could be. I left that much time because people have things to do and lives to lead; I don't know how often y'all actually sit down to listen to albums. If that's more time than is necessary then I am open to changing that too.
A week is too long, was what I was saying. Albums take 40-78 minutes to listen to in most cases, and most people will be listening while doing other things. I guarantee you a week to listen and comment will drag your thread into the territory of "Oh I meant to get to it but forgot" more often than you would like.
I wouldn't want to go much shorter than a week. Music does take time to digest, I'd want to listen to it, let it sit, listen to it again.
What would the verdict be on finding an incomplete playlist on YouTube and then linking to a separate video of the missing song if that missing song belongs in the middle of the playlist? Are we trying to listen to the album in song list order? If so, the idea I have in mind would require listening to five songs, pausing the playlist, listening to an individual video, then resuming the playlist. I have a back-up album in mind but it's not quite as good as my preferred choice. I don't want to create too much work for people.
I have to listen to an album in one sitting and in order; I'm one of those weirdos that views the album as the ultimate vehicle by which to deliver music. But that's alright with me, depends on what everyone else thinks.
The album I recommended is not standard either in that it's live and just over two hours long, but I couldn't not recommend it. I still think that's doable for a week, but by all means, I can pick a different one if you all think that's too much. I think we can get into specific grievances or preferences when it comes time to vote though, right? Maybe Jay can advise there as to what he was envisioning.
I prefer listening to an album straight through as well. I guess I've gotten used to partial playlists and searching for individual tracks as I've been working through my Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame list. YouTube is lacking in the 'oldies' department. :disappoint:
I'll wait and see what Jimmy says.
My nomination/submission is The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. The album starts at 18:54 in that link, because for some reason the CD reissue puts the bonus tracks at the beginning instead of the end.
The album I recommended is not standard either in that it's live and just over two hours long, but I couldn't not recommend it. I still think that's doable for a week, but by all means, I can pick a different one if you all think that's too much. I think we can get into specific grievances or preferences when it comes time to vote though, right? Maybe Jay can advise there as to what he was envisioning.
I prefer listening to an album straight through as well. I guess I've gotten used to partial playlists and searching for individual tracks as I've been working through my Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame list. YouTube is lacking in the 'oldies' department. :disappoint:
I'll wait and see what Jimmy says.
That's 11 submissions, which I think is plenty for now no matter how we proceed.
So lemme know everyone, how would you prefer to do this?
~ Shall we go with a hard queue as above?
~ Shall we do a poll vote to cut it down and then revisit the rest later?
~ How many days do you want to spend on each album?
These details mean little to me, so I am very open to your preferences.
Note: if we end up doing a poll, I would gather some basic information about each album to make the choices feel a little less abitrary:
- Release year
- [Parent] genre
- Number of tracks
- Duration
If anyone wants access to these little "Spotify" nuggets we're dropping that doesn't already have it, I'm pretty sure it's free if you don't mind a commercial here and there.
I don't work for that organization. :p
I don't have a problem with a poll, but it should not last longer than a day to keep things moving. I don't object to weekly listens, because people are busy. Mayb poll goes up on Monday, listening begins on Tuesday, discussion and Wrap-up on Friday, weekends off.
I've long held the belief that you can't appreciate where things are now without an understanding (if not an appreciation) of the past. My submission:
Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry Is on Top
Genre: Rock and roll
1959
12 tracks
29:26
YouTube Playlist- Listen to the first six tracks (through Johnny B Goode), then listen to this solo track (Little Queenie), then resume the playlist.
Sorry for the split-up nature of this submission. This is my favorite of Berry's albums. I almost submitted his first album, After School Session, but I feel like this is album (his third) is a tad better.
This sounds good to me.
But it's up to you all, I'm flexible. I have time to listen to tons of music currently, so I can do this or a more quickly paced version.
Ah, the good old days when an album could get away with being under a half hour. I really hate the expectation thta all albums clock in at 70 minutes these days, and think it has been detrimental to music. I generally think the perfect album length is between 35-40 minutes.
