I'm an EitS fan too! Love their new one. Beautiful stuff.G-Man wrote:I didn't buy them, but I got two new albums at Christmas:
Weezer's latest self-titled album (nicknamed the White album). I think I actually like it better than their previous album, which was hailed as a triumphant return to form. It's light and breezy for the most part and has a very consistent sound the whole way through. In other words, it sounds like an intentional album instead of a bunch of tracks slapped together to satisfy a contract.
I also got Explosions in the Sky's latest release, The Wilderness. I love the band and have all but one or two of their albums. This one branches out into new territory in production, arrangements, and textures. It features shorter tracks than previous releases too, which I think may work in their favor. They used to be what I describe as a band to listen to in the passenger seat of a car as beautiful country side rolls past. Either that or an ideal soundtrack to lay over old home movies. This new one steps up their game a little and I'm not sure how to best describe the music.

Re: Bought Any New Albums Recently?
I like it better on the second listen than the first, but it still doesn't measure up to Of Natural History. I'm increasingly annoyed by Dan Rathburn's predictable communist "work is bad" screeds that make it onto every album.MovingPictures07 wrote:I didn't know about this!! After a long hiatus, they're back under the name Free Salamander Exhibit. I have to say, I'm fairly disappointed, though. The album feels much less experimental, much more straight ahead alt-metal. The Henry Cow and RIO influences are mostly gone. I think the loss of violinist Carla Khilstedt probably had a lot to do with this. It's a shame. I was really looking forward to this record.

I've also gotten massively into Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in the last month (somehow I missed him until now). Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus is so good I can hardly even believe it.

Isn't it though? I love RTJ3. Might even be my new favorite from them, which says a lot.A Person wrote:Since it was free I'm not sure about its "bought" status but RTJ3 is bangin

Re: Bought Any New Albums Recently?
Recent new albums!
alt-J - RELAXER - Pretty good, though imo they could never really top An Awesome Wave. This one grew on me though, on first listen I only really enjoyed ~2 of the 8 tracks but I appreciated the others more on second listen. Somewhat odd rendition of "House of the Rising Sun", again I didn't like it at first but got a little bit more out of it the second time around. Standout tracks are "In Cold Blood", "Deadcrush", and "Pleader".
Fleet Foxes - Crack-up - Hell yeah hell yeah. Finally we get more sweet, sweet Fleet Foxes content. Nice, gentle, understated, at points even a little boring on the surface/at first, but beautiful and complex underneath. Again, appreciated more on second listen, but not quite convinced I like it quite as much as their previous material. But it's a lovely, well-balanced album.
James McAlister, Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly - Planetarium - Have to give this one a mention because it's a great collaboration and a cool concept. Haven't gotten around to a second listen yet, but first impressions were that it was really nice listening and musically diverse, except that I rather too easily get tired of Sufjan's voice. But put a Dessner bro on anything and I'll check it out.
Speaking of which, stay tuned for The National's new release later this year! I've already gotten pretty hooked on the lead single, "The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness." I'm such a sucker though... to me, Matt Berninger's voice is like coming home and wrapping a soft warm blanket around my ears.

Re: Acquired Any New Albums Recently?
it's been a great week in album releases, these are all fantastic
Big Red Machine - s/t (project by Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner, solidly excellent)
Hozier - Nina Cried Power EP (been waiting for new music from him for a while and he delivered)
the Mountain Goats - Hex of Infinite Binding EP (surprise ep drop! and it's really good, some cool clarinet and stuff and holy shit that second track is devastatingly sad)
Paul Simon - In the Blue Light (new arrangements of various pre-existing songs and they're absolutely stunning, and involve collaborators including yMusic and Bryce Dessner hell yeaahhh)
god the dessner bros are everywhere i love them so much

I recently downloaded my free copy of the Destiny 2: Forsaken soundtrack. And my oh my, They Deliver some epic music
Michael Salvatori in particular, love his work. So far my favorite tracks are, The Fanatic, The Man They Called Cayde, and Gunslinger
