ERA is hardly even useful at the end of the season. Most of baseball's most well-known statistics are close to useless, especially when it comes to pitching.G-Man wrote:Alright you baseball people- is it even worth looking at stats yet in helping me pick? It'll take me another day to get the Week 2 scores figured out. I failed to grab a screenshot of my stats page showing total runs through Saturday's games. Now I'll have to calculate it the long-ish way. Easy to do come morning.

Re: WEEK 1: EZ Fantasy Baseball 2016
If you really want to dig deep into the numbers side of baseball, I tend to read Fangraphs on an almost daily basis this time of year. Fair warning: there is quite a bit of math involved, and it may take some time to learn about some of the main statistics they track, but we have an entire baseball season and several months to get through all of that. :P

Re: WEEK 1: EZ Fantasy Baseball 2016
If there was any doubt that the Reds were decent whatsoever, I give you tonight.
Watching the disparity between us and the Cubs so far (and I know it's only 1 month so extremely small sample size) just shows how many more years we have to go in our rebuild. And how long the Cubs are going to be this good.

I think so too. I noticed that they play the lowly Braves, as well as the Yankees next week.Sloonei wrote:Well picked.Metalmarsh89 wrote:I'll take the Boston Red Sox this week.
Also, one of my strategies for picking thus far has been to pick teams that play 7 games during the week rather than having Thursday off. Fortunately, Boston falls into this category this week.
And despite their poor pitching, it appears they've managed to put up a lot of runs too.

That's been my secret strategy so far too but I keep picking the wrong max-games teams. The Brewers did pretty well for me though. At this rate, I need everyone ahead of me to have two bad weeks in a row for me to catch up.Metalmarsh89 wrote:Also, one of my strategies for picking thus far has been to pick teams that play 7 games during the week rather than having Thursday off. Re: WEEK 4: EZ Fantasy Baseball 2016
It means you had the most runs (sole or tied with someone else) for a week. Once someone gets the most runs a second time, they'll have two asterisks behind their name. I'm just curious to see if everyone will get lucky and be a weekly leader by the end of it all or if some of us will get shut out by you ringers.S~V~S wrote:What do the asterisks in "Overall Standings" mean?

I'm going to be checking this when I'm in a sportsbook in Vegas on Friday. May be using it to help make some futures bets in baseball on some Over/Unders.MovingPictures07 wrote:Anyone seen this MLB predictions generator by 538? Pretty neat.
I would very quickly take the under for the Reds to get to 70 wins, for starters. For about $50.

I think the craziest thing about that is it predicts the Chicago Cubs as having the best chance of winning the World Series. Could this be the year?

Re: WEEK 4: EZ Fantasy Baseball 2016
on paper they're definitely the strongest team in baseball right now. They're great in every area and have plenty of guys on the roster who've won before (three of whom did it with the Sox in 2013, for the record). I'm pretty much a full-time Cubs fan at this point. They need to win.MovingPictures07 wrote:I think the craziest thing about that is it predicts the Chicago Cubs as having the best chance of winning the World Series. Could this be the year?

It'd be pretty awesome if they did. I can't imagine being a hardcore Cubs fan and having to wait out a drought this long.Sloonei wrote:on paper they're definitely the strongest team in baseball right now. The Cubs are probably the best team in baseball. The problem is, once the playoffs start that means basically nothing. I think the MLB playoffs are a total crapshoot more than any of the other professional leagues in America.

Re: WEEK 4: EZ Fantasy Baseball 2016
It's inherent to the structure. A team can put together a very impressive resume over a 162 game marathon of a regular season, and then have just 3 off games in the first round and it's all over. It seems to happen every year to at least one team, while a lesser team gets hot late in the season or in the playoffs and wins the whole thing. This also happens in the NFL, but not quite to the same degree.MovingPictures07 wrote:Why is that?JaggedJimmyJay wrote:The Cubs are probably the best team in baseball. Re: WEEK 4: EZ Fantasy Baseball 2016
That's definitely true. The Mets last year are a perfect example. They were the last or one of the last teams to sneak into the playoffs, and even that was dependent on a major collapse by Washington, but then they got hot in October and went to the World Series.
Kansas City was the opposite of this trend though. They steamrolled everyone in the regular season and continued to do that all the way through the playoffs.

Same with the Red Sox! They only scored 1 run (in a win) on Monday, but 11 yesterday and 9 today.G-Man wrote:This blind squirrel finally found his acorn. The Pirates are going nuts this week!

Ooh. What an awful time to be randomized the Cubs Only 1 game played so far this week (with only an hour left until the second game starts). Anyways, that's my fault. I've had a lot going on irl and totally forgot about this. Sorry G-Man! I'll definitely be tracking for awhile now

I want the Angels this week. They seem to be putting things together but I expect I'll kill their momentum.
I can't not obsess over baseball, if that wasn't already obvious.

One of my fantasy teams is depending on Albert Pujols to hit lots of balls over fences this year.

I read that post way too fast at first and only picked up on the words "my fantasy," "Albert Pujols," and "lots of balls."Sloonei wrote:One of my fantasy teams is depending on Albert Pujols to hit lots of balls over fences this year.
