So I got my first ever paper accepted into a conference for presentation. I'm going to the AAA (that's American Accounting Association for those of you who still immediately think of the auto company when you see that ;) ) Southeast Regional Conference in late April, and I guess I'll be presenting my second year paper (which at this point looks like it'll be gobbled up into one of the essays in my dissertation).

It's at the "kiddy table" presentations (Dialogue instead of Paper Session), so I was actually slightly disappointed yesterday, but I really can't complain. It was accepted, I'll get to network with folks, and at least I hopefully will get some valuable feedback on my paper nonetheless.

Baby steps, at least.

Big deal. I presented a paper there once. It was called, "Money: It's a Gas. Grab that Cash with Both Hands and Make a Stash"

Congrats MP! What exactly does it mean that it's "dialogue" instead of "presentation"?

juliets wrote:Congrats MP! What exactly does it mean that it's "dialogue" instead of "presentation"?
The session will be run a bit differently. I'll have like 10-15 minutes to present my paper instead of 20-25, and I'll have to share my time with like 4 other papers instead of 1-2. The dialogue session is designed more for papers that aren't as ready for publication so there's also a dialogue moderator that will try to spur conversation regarding suggestions. The time slot also will probably be a bit less favorable (like really early in the morning or the end of the afternoon). That's it though.

Really it's not much different. They emphasize that the reviewers still review the papers as rigorously as for the normal paper sessions, so assuming that's true, I should get at least as much valuable feedback as I would otherwise. It just has a "kiddy table" perception because we all know the papers that aren't quite as good but they still want presented get shoved into the dialogue sessions after the regular sessions are all taken up. :p

Last night was the first of our two annual HOA meetings. Three people volunteered to serve as board members along with one of the current board members being willing to stay on. That means that, after three years as HOA Treasurer, I get to step down!

So as some of you know, one of my old university lecturers contacted me earlier this week and asked if I'd be interested in assisting her with a research project, which I accepted. I know it's going to be so different and overwhelming, but in the most fulfilling way possible.

I'll let you know if I still feel the same in a few days :noble:

Or.... depending on how large your monthly payment was, you could save 2/3 to 3/4 of your former car payment and put the remaining 1/4 to 1/3 to work and add it to whatever you currently pay on any student loans or credit card debt (if you carry credit card debt- please say no). That way you're both saving AND reducing your debt. Win-win baby. Win-win.

I decided to listen to Epi and now I'm broke. Thanks for nothing, G. Should have been more persuasive.

But then I got hired for a new job. Finally. I can (hopefully) retire from my nocturnal lifestyle. Orientation begins November 6th. Adult achievement #2 unlocked.

I'll be working as a mental health specialist at a psychiatric program. Basically a patient supervisor. Helping them in whatever way I can. It pays much better than my current job (roving restaurant employee), comes with much more manageable hours, looks good on a resume, and actually has the potential to be rewarding work. I've been waiting for this to fall in line for almost two months now. It's a tremendous relief.
It also gives me a more stable schedule in which to fit mafia activities.

Good news. I have a new job, starting next month. It's a 33% pay increase, with extra vacation. Different kind of work too, hoping I'll enjoy it more. What's more, my wife works in the same building.

And yet, I handed in my 2 weeks notice to my boss today (who, by the way, is a nice guy). He tried to negotiate a little bit, and I could tell he was surprised. I think he took it personally, and was upset that (if I was dissatisfied with my job) I hadn't come to him sooner. There were plenty of other positions in the company, he was already negotiating a mid-year raise for me given my performance, etc. So he (I think unintentionally) guilt-tripped me, and now I feel like crap.

yaay.

speed its easy to feel that way and I'm sorry its putting the damper on your celebration. Talk to your boss tomorrow and make sure he/she knows its got nothing to do with them. If they are a good person which I'm sure they are they'll put aside their hurt and be happy for you. I am so glad for you getting such a whopper increase and increase in pto. Woo hoo!

Congrats, speedchuck! :yay:

I echo juliets's sentiment. I've also been in your exact position before, speed. Sometimes it's difficult not to take things personally from either perspective, but most sensible employees and employers rationally know otherwise. This is especially true if the other person in the arrangement makes a sincere enough effort to emphasize that fact.
