Wow, first scum lynch! I've learned a few things from this:
1. I don't feel confident in my ability to scum-hunt. I will probably review who all led the charge on colin, and follow their lead.
2. Defending ANYONE in game is a bad idea. I will suppress my nice-person side and not give anyone else the benefit of the doubt.
3. I won't be mad if you all want to lynch me next. I realize that I look pretty darn scummy right now.

I do what Golden does too when I'm catching up so my opinions are unbiased and not influenced by other people's perceptions and analysis which could cloud my own judgment. When I subbed into Mountains or The Search for Quin, I just read the game from Day 1 and posted as I felt needed, from oldest to newest.

I didn't read any of Colin's Day 1 posts. But confidence was pretty strong, and Colin's Day 2 was resigned and detached.

I may have voted for him, but my reasoning won't sway many players.

Speedchuck, Wolbre, Sloonei.

Luna, I don’t know about. She’s new. What people suspect her for is one post from another player. Do I think that scared Colin distances from a teammate in this scenario? Probably. But I’ve also never played with Colin and only seen his town play in FE so that’s a fair amount to bet without good info. I think Colin avoiding the Sloonei and Sig wagons because Sloonei is a mate to be more convincing.

LC I’m pretty null on. I’m not even shook after I last mislynched him in...MK? I just am not paying much attention to him.

Wolbre especially looks bad if Sloonei is bad. He had the wafflyiest defense of Sloonei since Sloonei threw away his eggo shield.

Speed, I just just don’t buy his rainbow. There are three neutrals and a large town. Two players are messing around. So he thinks they’re both bad? No way, Jose. That rainbow list is made up.

why marmot?

i'm leaning towards a scotty vote. is he usually sincere? is not voting for people you've never played with general etiquette? i've never played with him before but letting everyone he's never played with avoid his day 1 vote seems like a good way to seem friendly and agreeable.
Okay. A few things.

What kind of question is "is he usually sincere?" What does that even mean? Explain.

For some players, sure. Tends to be more so for LP-based players or old timers, but in my assessment it's not strikingly out of character for Scotty to say something like this if that's what you're wondering. Typically Scotty likes to vote for lower-participants or lurkers on Day 1; he usually has some sort of underlying method to his early votes.

And I can assume that you are taking this a step forward and implying Scotty is being disingenuous? Why single him out for that, instead of someone such as yours truly who has made a few posts that could be considered overly friendly so far?
First MP begins to talk. Then his words become more and more sarcastic, until he dies. When he resurrects he becomes completely pedantic.

But I'm digging his line of undead pedantic sarcastic questioning, so I'll give it a town read.
I think MP's line of questioning was valid, so speedchuck looks good for townreading it. Could be bad speedchuck pushing two Civs against each other while mildly buddying MP.

Golden wrote: Sun Apr 22, 2018 7:25 pm I was up to date with the thread briefly and it's all downhill from here.

If I had to put money on MPs alignment, it's town. Like, literally his first post pinged people. That seems like town MP to me.
Does that say anything about the people he pinged?
Solid question, no alarm bells for me here, although the post from Golden tweaks my already-existing suspicion of him so long as MP is town. Also, if you follow the linkback to the thread, Golden says he'll revisit this question later. Did he?

Giving new/unfamiliar players a pass on Day 1 is not uncommon among the various cultures that The Syndicate grew up from. The tenants of this community are hospitality, murder, and mayhem.
Thanks for the background.

Does any of that factor in to give you a read on Scotty, Dunya, or MP?
This post pings me. Looks like a generic "see me producing content" question. I know it's important on Day 1 to prompt conversation, but is speedchuck thought that reads should be available from that then it would have been better to hear what his reads were, not the most beige question possible.

A little bit.
:evileye:
He gets a beige answer to his beige question and gives a dirty look about it. Still doesn't try to answer it himself. Wants to be the guy to provoke content but not give his own?

???

was MP being sarcastic with me? I just thought he was using those tags for color differences. I feel stupid now.
(Twas a joke. You are correct.)

Does that say anything about the people he pinged?
what does it say about us to YOU, is the question, speedchuck.
It says you are avoiding basic ans... wait, you aren't Golden.

Not answering this right now, because you freaks have posted 5 more pages of content and I'm not getting bogged down with outdated reads.
"Not answering this right now", I don't really get this. Like, what is it supposed to say about speedchuck that MP pinged some other players with his first post? Makes me suspicious of dunya for saying it, because what it says about speedchuck actually ISN'T the question, really. Makes me suspicious of speedchuck because he treats it like a valid question that he needs to put some thought into and answer later. Did he answer it later? This looks like baddie teammates distancing.

Try not to think of it as defence. I'm not saying any of it to save myself but to give you perspective on my posts.

I'm fine being lynched today, but it won't get the town anywhere. However, I could still win the game and notch a victory on the meta-belt.

Or you could leave me around and I could help solve the game.
OMG, the final nail in the Golden is town coffin.

Dude, we're both town. Let's do this. :slick:
I agreed with your Golden posts until this one.

Cmon, dude. That's the thing literally everyone says under pressure.
This, I agree with. MP declares the "final nail" on Day 1 for Golden's Civness based on the most generic "I'm Civ" phrase ever? Foolish at best, bullshit more likely.
speedchuck wrote: Mon Apr 23, 2018 11:04 am A message to Dunya, Golden, and mayyybe Macdougall.

When someone makes a post, and it pings you, you should explain why, and elaborate when questioned. Then you (both sides) can accept what people say about you and move on to other things.

Instead, you guys have been staking your claim on said post and building beautiful multi-dimensional castles with multiple meta-arrangements that last for a hundred posts.

Just wanted to say that. I'm not going to try reading into these "he said she said" arguments. I can't follow them.

I'll bring in some reads in a moment.

I concur.

Epi lays low as scum, sure, but he's useful as town. Game has actually been going for less than 24 hours, finals for schoolteachers are approaching, etc. Epi hasn't been super active this weekend either, and has had company if I remember right.

I'm not going to lay a lazy vote on Epi for activity, and I caution against wasting your time with it today.
Epi was Civ, so this looks like his heart is in the right place, though it could be his baddie assuredness looking to pocket Epi a little. Although saying "Epi lays low as scum, sure, but he's useful as town" while Epi is laying low could be a soft attempt to garner suspicion in the guise of the opposite.

What do you mean by this? Epi is a pretty bold scum player in my experience? I absolutely do not take his absence from this thread as a mark of suspicion.
The one time I played with scum Epi, he was practically AFK for a quarter of the game.

***I don't think I'm passionate about it. That's just the way I write. With aggressiveness and passion. Yes, that kind of passion. Why else would I play mafia?
Golden criticized the post from a different angle than I did. Seems to be subtly framing a teammate scenario between speedchuck and Epi. I think... that Golden and speedchuck are not w/w. If this were a game consisting of one post, I'd vote for Golden before I vote for speedchuck. I DO think it's lazy to vote someone for inactivity. It literally takes the least amount of research and effort to do. I also don't think speedchuck came across as particularly passionate either, so that rings false to me too.

If I need an apologist, I'll attain an honest one.

[VOTE: speedchuck] aubergine
Explain night vale, or give me a different scum game to suggest differently.

Also, explain how I'm an apologist.
Epi calls him out for the "lay low" comment's dubious level of honesty. I guess Epi was a lay-low baddie in Night Vale? There are elements of Epi's meta that are predictable, but I don't think that he just lays low when bad. That would have been well-known by now, I think that the accusation is made to fit the behaviour, rather than really wanting to determine if the behaviour fits the accusation.

That's all I have time for right now. I'd colour speedchuck orange at this point, and I still suspect dunya and Golden after this slice of their game is revisited.

LC, I don't believe you even once implied I was bad until a throw away comment yesterday and now after building a case on speedchuck I'm bad? If you've been thinking I'm bad why all this 'hubris', 'you can't read me' talk?

I was laying the foundation of an epi/speed team - as a joke, because they were apparently 'caught' as a team in GoC on day 1 by DharmaHelper who was completely wrong. A joke I actually completed.

It isn't lazy to put a vote on someone for low activity because time and time again (the GoC being the most recent example), baddies tend to end up amongst the more quiet posters rather than the other way around.

So many of your post by post conclusions on speedchuck are 'this looks civ' that I cannot help but see someone who is trying to force a conclusion into an iso rather than come to one.

Lastly, I haven't revisited that question yet in any meaningful way but that doesn't mean I won't. Nothing has happened to shift my opinion yet, but it's something I've made a note of.

My own read on speedchuck was pretty up and down until this post which I think looks pretty townie. There's a chance it could be effective distancing but I like it generally. I know that feeling of getting a town read from a post and then being disappointed that no-one takes any notice, so his response to me noticing felt sincere.

This second Persian invasion was immense compared to the first, and Xerxes had planned it to the most minute details. Men continued to pour across the Hellespont by the thousands, and when they were footed in Thracian territory, the bridge of ships disembarked back into their fleet formations. The Persian navy advanced parallel along the Balkan coastline as the troops on the ground marched. Xerxes understood that the two major wings of the invasion would need to be coordinated together to ensure the least avenues for Greek resistance. The navy and ground army were rarely more than a couple of days apart in distance.

Image

Meanwhile, in Athens preparations for the invasion were being made at haste. A man named Themistocles, who had happened to serve as one of the generals at the Battle of Marathon, had risen to political prominence. He was famed for his powers of persuasion and his intellect, and throughout the war he would serve as the premier strategist over the Greek defense. Most Athenians feared the worst of the Persian invasion -- there were simply too many for any meaningful defense to be mounted, and that a concerted effort to preserve Athens would only result in the deaths of thousands and the loss of the city. The only course of action, they felt, was to leave the city essentially unguarded and to join the Peloponnesians at the isthmus. It was there, they said, that a defense of Greek territories could be mounted on the ground with the full combined strength of Athens, Sparta, and their satellite city-states.

For months, Themistocles railed against this strategy. Historians of the era paint a picture of Themistocles being literally alone -- one voice screaming against the prevailing wisdom of hundreds. The truth of this can fairly be doubted, but it is evident nonetheless that Themistocles was instrumental in proposing and executing a different defensive strategy. They key to defeating Persia, according to Themistocles, was control of the sea. Themistocles realized that the Greeks could never hold the isthmus against the Persians, as Xerxes's fleet would decimate any feeble opposition and serve as a permanent force against which not even the greatest Spartan warriors could stand. Instead, it was a combined front of an Athenian navy and a Spartan ground force which could save Greece. It helped that he had previously commissioned the construction of a large naval force on Athenian coin.

There had also been a previous occasion when Themistocles had demonstrated how supreme were his powers of analysis -- and at a most opportune moment too, when the public treasury of the Athenians had become flush with revenues from the mines of Laurium, and each and every citizen was due to get 10 drachmas as a personal windfall. It was then that Themistocles had persuaded the Athenians to halt this distribution, and to deploy the funds instead in the building of two hundred ships for use in the war -- by which he had meant the war against the Aegenitans. So it was that this conflict, by forcing the Athenians to become mariners, proved in the long run to be the salvation of Greece. Even though the ships were never used for the purpose for which they had been built, they did become available to Greece in her hour of need. What is more, in addition to the ones already built and in service, the Athenians were obliged to construct additional vessels. This was because, in the wake of the oracle, and after due consultation, they had resolved to do as instructed by the god, and meet the barbarian invasion of Greece by taking to their ships, every last man of them, alongside other such Greeks as wished to join them.

Night 2 has ended.

MacDougall has been killed. He was:

Pericles

Pericles was the head-statesman presiding over Athens in the wake of the Persian wars and into the Peloponnesian War. He is most revered now as an orator, as his great funeral oration remains one of the most famous and important speeches not only of antiquity, but in the history of western civilization. He is cited as an influence to many modern leaders, and I personally believe that his oration was a major influence for Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

Pericles' funeral oration

Day 3 has begun. You have 48 hours to lynch somebody.

We have received word of a prophecy of the pythia from the Oracle at Delphi.

Image

Choutas is clouding his eyes with a focus on principles only
Dougall looks great and he should be a beacon for rational thinkers
Listen to words from the gods who say Golden and Empee are townies
Speedchuck is trustworthy, Luna and Kyle we can safely rely on
Persians amongst us, but sloonei was lynched and we cheered to the heavens

I'm going to apologize in advance as I work 12 hour shifts Friday nights and Saturday nights starting at 11 pm - so I'm going to be few and far between. (I'll send the pay stubs screenshots if you want proof :P )
