Harry Stephen Keeler [ENDGAME]

“Yet this theory of mine was untenable for two reasons: First, it partakes too much of coincidence - only in the detective stories of badly harassed authors do such unmotivated occurrences take place.”
- Harry Stephen Keeler, Find the Clock

SENSATION!
Get ready for Harry Stephen Keeler Mafia!
The game of crazy coincidences and contrived plot twists set in 1930s Chicago

"Author Harry Stephen Keeler (1890-1967) wrote more than 70 books of what he called "webwork" fiction — mystery novels with highly complex, luridly bizarre and nearly inscrutable plots." - NPR

Disclaimer: This Mafia is based on books originally written and published in 1930s America. They are a product of their time, and may contain certain implicit attitudes, racial or otherwise, that would be considered offensive today. Please try to appreciate that the intent of the game is not to offend, but merely to remain true to the source material.
Roles:

Civilians: Kill All Mafia to Win
Image
Gilrick Sandringham - The Jack of All Trades. Extremely well read and a master of taking on others’ identities. Also completely insane. Gets a different power every night.

Image
Patrick McFee - The Cemetery Superintendent - Can role check the dead.

Image
Tim Waldo - The Burglar - Can steal an item each night.

Image
Mimi LeCompte - The Reptile Queen - Can send her reptiles after people, tormenting them.

Image
John Cooper Jarndyce - The Sensationalist - Can create a scene which will enthrall two players for a day.

Image
Jeff Darrell - The Ace Reporter - Finds out the location of various items, which he can choose to publish in his paper or not.

Image
Philodexter Maxellus - The Poetry Publisher - Can post poems in the thread to share his thoughts.

Image
John Barr - The Inventor of the Barr Bag - Can put one item in the Barr Bag, preventing it from being stolen.

Image
Sophie Kratzenschneiderwümpel - The Litigious Lady - Files lawsuits to extract items from male roles.

Image
Simon Grundt - The Feeble-Minded Detective - Gets info but there is a 50% chance it is wrong.

Image
Casimer Jech - The Antique Dealer - Can trade his items for others each night. If the item is usable, both parties can immediately gain the benefit.

Image
Oliver Oliver - The Wealthy Gad-About-Town - Gives himself BTSC with another player each night.

Image
Luke McCracken - The Cracksman - Searches for the safe or Shrik’s vault, finding a secret inside in addition to any items stored there.

Image
Chief O’Toole - The Police Chief - Can arrest someone each night, nullifying their vote the following day and their ability to use any items.

Image
Sato Okimo - The Japanese Lawyer - Can execute wills, stock certificates and promissory notes.

Mafia: Outnumber Civilians and Celestials to Win
Image
Macleish MacPherson - The Crooked Doctor - Can dispense medicine that does a variety of unsavory and often illegal things.

Image
Ivan Kossakoff - The Strangler - Can silence every night.

Image

Image

Image
Gustav Shrik - The Banker - Can store papers in his vault.

Celestials: Survive and Possess All Five Treasures of the Orient to Win
Image

RULES

1. No role outing of yourself or others. Role hint with extreme caution.
2. No unauthorized BTSC.
3. No editing or deleting of posts.
4. No on topic posts from the dead. Off topic posts from the dead must be in dead red.
5. Keep the thread drama free. Be respectful and have fun. If you feel things getting heated, step away, or PM me or the game mod. That's what we're here for.
6. No double targeting.
7. I will not be using a host color for this game.

Day 0
Image
SALE!
Casimer Jech, celebrated dealer in oddities and antiquities, is pleased to announce that on this Tuesday, March the 17th, his Curio Shop located on 22nd Street is having its first - and last! - ever sale. Ancient relics from the Far East! Rare and valuable treasures of every shape and size!
One day only! Supplies limited!

Please select which item you would like to buy. Only the first person to vote for each item will receive it.

How Items Work

Some items can be used to confer benefits, some cannot. Some items will be consumed when used, some will not. Most items can be stolen. When someone is lynched, all of the items they possess go to the people who voted for them, in order. So the first vote gets the first item, etc. When someone is NKed, whoever performed the kill gets the item. Items may not be voluntarily traded between players.

Day 0 will last 48 hours or until everyone checks in or until I get tired of waiting. One of those three.

I voted Green Jade hand because jade green is my favourite shade of my favourite colour.

@bullz - as soon as I read the list more fully, I actually wished I had taken the key. If I hadn't just thought 'first in first served' and had taken a little bit more time to think, that's what I would have taken for sure.

I hesitated for a bit before I chose it actually, partly because I thought someone would swoop in and take it before I could. I'm now just hoping it unlocks something and that the something it unlocks is useful in some way!

I was afraid to take the Silver Buddha (my first choice originally), the Green Jade Hand, OR the Two-Headed Elephant Charm, because I thought they all sounded like they were ripe for being Curse items.

Thanks LC :( now I feel great about my choice...

It didn't even occur to me to think that some of them could be curse items. I just assumed when llama said 'some can confer benefits, some cannot' - that some were good, and others are just there.

Bags being the sandworm! Hang on a minute, did the Sandworm eat people? Or did it really just end up being ridden by Paul a lot. I need to think this through.

Hi everyone! I'm not familiar with Harry Stephen Keeler but I like playing mafia :) so here I am.

I picked the stock certificate because maybe it's worth money and will go up in value.

I'm not familiar with Harry Stephen Keeler either so I'm hoping that won't matter.

Sometimes it will naturally come out, but it can be contained if we just remember that this is a game on a message board forum that 99.99% of the population of the Earth has never heard of before. No matter how successful anyone is, it means just about nothing.

Hey folks! Just popping in, haven't read anything yet, and very likely won't have the chance until tomorrow evening after my microeconomic theory seminar midterm, between studying for that and dealing with Death Note.

Yay game! See you soon!

Thanks, you too, Zomba!

Guess I better pick an item while I'm here. I would have picked the stock certificate, but it seems my fellow accountant beat me to that option. I'll go with the clock.

Now will be back tomorrow to read posts and such!

No one is familiar with Harry Stephen Keeler. He's the most obscure guy ever. But if you are smart, you will seek out and read his books because they are worth it.

So, I already have a suspicion but I am keeping to myself until day 1 to see how everything plays out.

Golden, do you see what I see?

Hi everyone! I am currently on vacation in Las Vegas (like the degenerate member of the Animal Sanctuary Squad that I am. I will not be playing until I return home on Thursday night. Otherwise, this is all you will hear from me until then. I'd ask for luck but I've already done fairly well in poker and blackjack. But I'll still take any good vibes. :D Happy mafia-ing!
