Also, for the record, roles were randomized. That being said, it was hella convenient to have my tie-breaker in the same house

I feel the same, actually. I tend to try and throw myself into a game and 'spearhead' things and I often just make a mess of everything. I took more of a backseat here and things went well for me. I don't think I've really been able to figure out how I should best approach the games I play.

Sprit, I hope your break is not too long. You're a lot of fun to play with.
Re: Welcome to Night Vale Mafia [ENDGAME]
Yes, I faked silencing. Then I got silenced for real.
It was hard to be enthusiastic with a team that could be worked out deductively. My vote was known to be worth two, so it was only a matter of time before I got caught. Eloh's fake flip would be quickly shown to be false, whether by no one being silenced or by the messenger posting a message. And Long Con was already dead.
On top of that all, Lorab's protection worked only against us- not the other team.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale Mafia [ENDGAME]
is it because of how i play
a little risky and not actual strategy of game mechanics
the only mechanic im good at recognizing is WIFOM and OMGUS, im also terrible at building cases
like almost anything you see thats early game is gut unless ive got an investigative role

GG guys. Was fun.
Nice keeping that check until the last day, Sprit. I was gambling that you were out of LD checks.
Thanks!
So I think if Tan Man hadn't killed TSP and blown the bluff, he and I might have pulled out a win. That second detector check really helped there. Could have ridden out that to victory.sprityo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2017 8:16 pm second one

Re: Welcome to Night Vale Mafia [ENDGAME]
About the curses!
I'm in mafia games to have fun, and if I can have fun by throwing people around with WIFOM then I'm likely to do that. Sometimes. WIFOM.
When I saw Rico doing his post gimmick, I decided to mess him up. I liked his previous gimmick better, and I wanted some revenge for it, so I forced him to speak in Poppy verse day 2. I know it's not ideal, but this was more fun than pseudo-silencing someone, and I didn't have any reason to limit anyone's speech. This was never supposed to be a thing. But then people started suspecting Blue Velvet folks. Time to blow smoke screens!
With research.
Googling site:mafiathesyndicate.com post gimmick or post limitation or roleplaying helped a lot. That's how I found the games, and I used them to throw people off my trail until they were buried in wine. I hope everyone had fun!
D2: Rico - POPPY verse - Blue Velvet
D3: Dom - Trump, limited to 140 characters - Romance of the Three Kingdoms
D4: Wilgy - Kills self in first post, communicates as diary, ghost, or zombie - Downtown Abbey Mafia
D5: Rico - Rico was being annoying toward TSP, so I disallowed all but pictures he'd already posted. Mean, I know.
D6: Wilgy - Scruffy from Futurama, not allowed to use official syndicate names in posts - Futurama Mafia
I think that's all correct. Let me know what your thoughts were. If anything, I hope I fostered a good time. I don't think it was the reason we lost.

Great game. Go civvies!!!!
So frustrating being deaded in a game where I had so much to say!!!! Although I was convinced that Elo was Hiram and I would have entirely messed with that whole theory. On the show, Hiram's Violet Head bought Cecil in an auction and used him to protect Dana several times (before returning Cecil to himself). Alas.
Fun game to play and to follow from the grave.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale Mafia [ENDGAME]
I lost because of (in my estimation) 4 things.
1. The way I play scum is to legitimately scumhunt, by townfirming people. If I can find just a little bit of misinformation (TSP's surprise false Eloh flip) then I can form a town net. It's chancy, but looks a lot like my town play because scum wouldn't want to make townreads/townfirms. Didn't work out this game.
This cornered me by POE, because...
2. Boomslang killed TSP. If it wasn't for the Tan Man basically claiming, I would have been anti-aligned with Eloh, TSP would be the Tan man, and we would sail through the endgame.
3. Last ditch effort didn't look good on me. I baited the lie detector, betting that he had used his three LDs. I lost that bet. Didn't help that Dom had used his tracking well. We kept too many info roles alive, because...
4. Our scumhunting might have been too earnest. I was legitimately scumhunting as best as I could all game, helping tremendously with nailing LC and narrowing down toward Epi. I wanted to make sure we could pin down the other scum team. Unfortunately, we did too well at that. I'll keep that in mind if I'm scum in a multiple scum team game again. This was my first time doing that.
And for the record Dom, I completely forgot about my pressure on TSP. I'm sure there are other pushes I forgot this game too. :P I don't keep notes.

I don't think your kill choices helped either, although that's less within your control. I baited a kill by throwing your name out there once I suspected it was you, believing that nutella was John and DF was Pamela by that point, and that it kept at least one of the power roles alive another day (I wasn't sure if LoRab was the other one).
One thing that also gets lost in games like this is the utility you can get from the right civilian lynch (although you can never plan it intentionally). Jack's lynch ended up working in the towns favour, we couldn't have narrowed so many things down without knowing timmer was the glow cloud.

Yeah, you are right about the kills. But the right plays (probably Dom night 2 and spirtyo night 4) but it really feels bad to kill people who are getting suspicion. And my Tan Man gambit was sure to fail based on the set up, but we had no way of knowing that.Golden wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2017 10:10 pm I don't think your kill choices helped either, although that's less within your control. Civ dom in full form is a sight to behold. These last couple of days it was fun watching dom just steamroll through. It was evident to me on the last day that the best possible thing I could do was just get out of Dom's way and let him take speedchuck down.

So adding an extra "olol" did get me killed in the end.
With a known mafia member agreeing with him that the extra "olol" meant I was bad.

Uses a different head each night. Each power can be used only once. Hiram becomes vanilla after all powers are used.
Gold Head - lynch switch (me and Eloh)
Green Head - add +1 vote (Epi some night)
Purple Head - Can anonymously message Cecil one night. (First night)
Blue Head - Dead role check (dfaraday)
Gray Head - Silence a player (used on Epi)

Told ya.
Btw, I didn't scumread you in the end. I was desperately trying to do an at the buzzer look for bad behavior from you to help the town and got cut off in the middle. Given another hour, I'd have concluded you were town. That said, I think your vote for me was a mistake. You didn't vote based off my words or actions. You voted based off the mafia's actions, giving them total control.
I guess what I'm trying to say is "Saying WIFOM on a mafia action doesn't clear players is fine because it's easy to go against the meta grain for fake cred. Saying WIFOM on a mafia action damns a player is not because you're not only battling the WIFOM, you're battling the assumption of who is in the mafia and again, it's easy to go against the meta grain." Your assumptions about the situation didn't take into account that Tony and Speed were the ones vote stealing so the meta of the Syndicate basically didn't apply.
Speaking of, amazing play on the part of Speed and Tony. Your only mistake was to steal from me twice. I was ready for it. Both of you did an outstanding job of pretending to be good guys.
@Blooper
Good game. I loooooved the flavor. Laughed a bunch at those writeups. I disagree with Epi about the fake Kevin/Cecil flip being a bust. I would have equally believed that Kevin took over Cecil's posting power when Cecil was dead and that Kevin flipped as Cecil. It's just that Eloh didn't put enough time into the game to make herself look like Cecil. That's not the setup's fault.
My one balance critique is that I think the man in the tan jacket was OP and harmful to the mafias. Unkillable, stopped Strex rolechecking, busted a politician softclaim. The only thing Tan feared was lynch. Essentially, Tan could play as a superpowered townie and if he did a bad job, he could switch alignments and remain a mostly superpowered traitor. Some tweaks to make it easier for Tan to lose and to make him truly neutral instead of very much pro-town would have been the only thing I would tweak about the setup.
Thanks for the game!

Man, why do we keep tying up votes? IIRC, more than half of the votes in this game and Pokemon were tied at EOD. That's such a weird meta thing. Don't we want to take control of lynches? Seems like there were lots of votes made specifically to tie things up. I get that we were hunting Marcus but still.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale Mafia [ENDGAME]
I think Kevin's seemer power counts a bust under the circumstances of Eloh's early (and unexpected) death and Cecil being still alive (and with people who could potentially connect with him - his private messenger, for instance - still alive). Plus, my personal feeling is that rolehinting in this game was quite leniently supervised, which obviously didn't work in Mafia's favor, in absence of closed setup and/or counterfeit roles to claim as. Not that circumventing the claim rule is uncommon, via subtle hints and such, still midway through the game everyone was discussing openly who they are or think others are. Easy to get the mafia stuck on their chessboard spots, this way. Not sure how TSP stayed alive this much, given that Boom had no death/wrath to fear from the Politicians (I missed Boom's early attempt to call bullsuit on TSP's claim, so whatever).
Slightly bemused by Tan's design myself, tbh, but not familiar with any of the lore - maybe he is a character who went with the wind. Being bulletproof isn't that uncommon, when you want your indy role not to get rekt that easily by nightkill forces (Moloch or The Judge from Epig's games comes to mind). Inheriting the mafia kill is definitely not uncommon, but I don't understand how that didn't turn him into an antagonist one bit. Indy-inheriting killers usually become SKs. What I would have probably never allowed myself was the role to change his wincon prediction that easily and often. Pretty low pressure indy role, overall, for Boomslang to handle.

I'm a fan of safeclaims because you don't have to worry about this.Ricochet wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2017 2:26 pm Plus, my personal feeling is that rolehinting in this game was quite leniently supervised, which obviously didn't work in Mafia's favor, in absence of closed setup and/or counterfeit roles to claim as. I admit, that means that leads to a different dynamic at times because people can become "confirmed" rather early.

Jack- everyone I could have meaningfully voted the day I lynched you was town. I was right to be conflicted. But your lynch turned out to be the most productive, and I couldn't lynch rico when he was overtly claiming Erika. The thing that put me over the edge on you was your vehement defence of rico... I thought you were claiming josie then backing off it when I pressed.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale Mafia [ENDGAME]
I have found that some of the most difficult roles to balance with minimal hosting experience are independent roles. To project how those will play out without seeing prior examples from the host perch can be a tough task, and all things considered I think things turned out well enough here. In my very first hosting experience, I had to restart an entire game after 700 posts had already been made because I overpowered my indy roles.
You did well, niju. Especially for a game with two mafia teams, I think things ran as smoothly as can reasonably be asked. The experience will surely influence future attempts anyhow.

That wasn't my intention at all. I was just listening to the song.

I thought speedchuck's performance as an evildoer was top notch. I had him pegged as a civilian the whole time.

TBH should've seen you earlier, Epi. Talking about your own role is a classic tell.

Indeed - I have learned a hell of a lot from this game, what works and what doesn't, and I'm sure I'll make more grand games and errors in the futureJaggedJimmyJay wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2017 3:14 pm I have found that some of the most difficult roles to balance with minimal hosting experience are independent roles.
