The Syndicate's Game of Champions: 2013

It's the ultimate challenge!! Experience blasts from the past with a wild twist! Duke it out with your fellow mafia winners to be crowned the champion of the year!

Invitations limited to only winners. Losers just aren't game enough.

ROLES

Civvies (17)

Damo Suzuki - [Avant-Garde 2] – This crazed singer has a personal bag of mushrooms he can tap into every night. Others might consider him an expert on the matter of such substances, but he is really too inarticulate most of the time to even consider the thought himself. He can grab one mushroom at random out of his bag every night to use on himself or on another player of his choice. Unbeknownst to Damo, there may be a few other random non-mushroom items in that bag as well.

Man-E-Faces - [Masters of the Universe] – Each night, Man-E-Faces must choose whether to be a human (no effect), a robot (may attempt a role check at a 60% success rate while doubling the number of lynch votes for himself the next day) or a monster (may attempt a night kill at a 40% success rate while quadrupling the number of lynch votes for himself the next day).

Trusty John - [Grimm's Fairy Tales] – Is always valiant and has the Kingdom's best interest at heart. The first time he is targeted for a NK, he will survive and there will be two days in a row. The second time he dies.

Homestar Runner - [Homestar Runner] - The lovable, but dimwitted star of this show. Each night, Homestar will host two players to join in his game show the subsequent day period. They will have the duration of the day period to play, and then during the night period, Homestar will declare one of the two the winner and that player will be awarded a prize. One day he can choose to sleep through the phase, thereby making himself unlynchable but causing his vote not to count either, and one night he can sleepwalk, thereby allowing him to follow another player, discovering whom they targeted.

King of Town - [Homestar Runner] - Has a smorgasbord buffet in his castle. He will choose one item to eat each night, giving him a one time use ability the following night, but he won't know what the item does before he eats it.

Mr. Ibis - [American Gods] - An American avatar of Thoth, Mr Ibis is a god of death, but also of balance. Each day, he removes someone from the poll. If he removes a civvie, the worth of his vote increases by one. If a baddie, it decreases by one, and an Indy has no effect. He does not know the results, but may ask the hosts his vote count once in the game. He may not remove himself on Night One.

Lucy - [Sgt. Pepper's] – A woman every bit as mysterious as she is beautiful. Each night she will lead someone through an acid laced vision. The effects of this will be a surprise to be interpreted only by the person she targets.

Mr. Henderson - [Sgt. Pepper's] – Using his amazing gymnastic abilities, Mr. Henderson can avoid being hit by a night target; without knowing what the power was, he will randomly redirect it to someone else.

MacGyver - [MacGyver] – Cannot be lynched while Penny is alive.

Penny Parker - [MacGyver] – Cannot be night killed while MacGyver is alive. Every night, Penny searches for MacGyver; if she finds him, awesomeness ensues. (Secrets) If Penny finds MacGyver, they gain BTSC, and become a civ Ninja team, with MacGyver carrying out the kills. Kills executed on civvies will fail automatically. If MacGyver dies, the kill passes to Penny.

Villager - [Minecraft] – Each night, the villager will choose a number which is associated with a player who has a night power; the villager will trade with the associated role. The villager will give the other player a place to stay thus protecting him from ALL night targets. In exchange, the villager will receive the other player's power for the night. The villager will not know the identity of the player, only the role he traded with.

Thomas - [Thomas the Tank Engine] – Being really useful, Thomas is always helpful and convincing. His vote each Day is worth three. Has BTSC with Percy.

Percy - [Thomas the Tank Engine] – Percy has the opportunity to take on a new civvie ability each Night, but can use each ability only once! Has BTSC with Thomas.

Jack Torrence - [The Shining] – Can post his thoughts to the thread each night. If found by Delbert Grady, they gain BTSC and a nightly kill, changing Jack's alignment.

Mycroft Holmes - [Sherlock] – Sherlock's brother, and high-ranking member of the British government. Can save someone from lynch three times, but not himself, and not the same player more than once.

Beggar's Banquet - [Rolling Stones] – Abilities include:
o Sympathy for the Devil - May role block a player once in the game.
o Street Fighting Man - May protect one player, except itself, once from night kills.
o Stray Cat Blues - Alarm Clock (Secrets) Once it dies for the first time, it is automatically resurrected the following period.

Meat Boy - [Super Meat Boy] – The game’s protagonist who tries to save his love from the evil Dr. Fetus. Every night he travels through a level, searching for Bandage Girl; if he finds her, he forces Dr. Fetus to flee to another world. (Secrets) Every time Meat Boy dies, he resurrects himself automatically the subsequent period. The fourth time he dies, however, he will remain dead.

The Manipulators (4)

The Sinister Exaggerator - [Avant-Garde 2] – Loves to exaggerate! (Secrets) Can tamper with the night posts every night, adding in one occurrence of its choice that didn’t actually happen. As a being of mystical presence, it can continue to do this even from beyond the grave. Additionally, as long as it is alive, the killer on its team can kill twice every time instead of once.

Rumpelstiltskin - [Grimm's Fairy Tales] – Loves wreaking havoc around the kingdom. Every night, Rumplestiltskin will pick a word to be the "magic word" the following day. If someone says the "magic word", then their vote will be worth twice as much as normal.

Catherine Martell - [Twin Peaks] – Owner of the Packard Mill, and the wife of Pete. Also having an affair with Ben. Can control what role she is shown as when lynched.

Jim Moriarty - [Sherlock] – A criminal mastermind, he seeks revenge on those he sees as meddlers. Every even night, he attempts to uncover a player’s role, thereafter publicly revealing his result, but his result has a 50% chance of being inaccurate. As his team’s killer, he eradicates a player of his choice every odd night. If he dies, his kill passes to the next in line above him.

The Video Game Villains (4)

Big Daddy (Bouncer) - [Bioshock] – Is mentally conditioned to protect one of his teammates under any circumstances, guarding them from harm. At the very start of the game, the team selects the player to bond to Big Daddy (Bouncer). If any character attempts to nightkill Big Daddy's target, Bouncer absorbs the kill attempt. Bouncer is harder to kill than most living creatures due to its thick armored suit; as such, it has an automatic 50% chance of surviving NKs. Starting Night 2, Bouncer targets a player of its choice with its drill, which has an 85% chance of killing its target. After using its drill, the Bouncer must take two nights to recharge its energy before another brutal attack. If Big Daddy is busy protecting on the night he is supposed to kill, he skips the night, and tries the following night instead.

Creeper - [Minecraft] – A creepy green creature. Each night he creeps up on a player and blocks his ability for the night. (Secrets) If Big Daddy (Bouncer) dies, Creeper stops blocking every night, instead blocking every odd night, and tries to kill a player every even night. However, it has only a 60% success rate of killing its target. Additionally, once in the game at any time, Creeper may explode, killing himself, as well as having a 25% chance of killing four other players. He may not select which players, however, as they will be each of the two players alphabetically above and below him among those currently alive on the player list.

Piranha Plant - [Classic Super Mario Bros.] – Secretly chooses a number every odd night. The person to vote in the subsequent Day poll that corresponds with that number is killed (Non-players and dead players can absorb this kill!).

Dr. Fetus - [Super Meat Boy] – The game’s antagonist, Dr. Fetus, is truly evil. Every night, he hides Bandage Girl within a level that he has engineered to confuse Meat Boy; he must choose which level by the end of each day period. If she is found, he flees and tries again. Dr. Fetus cannot be lynched until Meat Boy is successful in finding Bandage Girl a fourth time. (Secrets) If Dr. Fetus becomes the last member of his team still alive, he begins killing every even night in his Lil' Slugger. Because of Lil' Slugger's bulky and somewhat slow movements, however, it often struggles to actually kill prey, succeeding only 35% of the time.

Independents and Neutrals (5)

Zodac[Masters of the Universe] – The Cosmic Enforcer (Secrets) Zodac cannot be night killed. Whenever players are voted on during a resurrection or an inactivity kill event, Zodac chooses among all of the players, and his selection is resurrected or killed, whichever is applicable. During an inactivity kill event, the player of Zodac's choosing is killed, regardless of any ability or condition that normally would protect the player from night kills. Zodac is updated every night with how many players are still alive in each faction (civvies, each baddie team, independents). Additionally, Zodac decides who is lynched in the event of any ties. May win with any team.

Sander Cohen[Bioshock] – Controller and head of Fort Frolic, Cohen is an artist gone mad, to say the least. Now that he has finished his masterpiece, the Quadytch, he is content, only angered by those who dare to doubt him. He survives the first two attempts on his life, whether by lynch or by nightkill. Every odd night, he may use his camera to take a picture of any deceased individual, revealing their role to him. Wins by surviving, but only if everyone else alive has never doubted him.

Media - [American Gods] – She controls what you see, what you think, what you know. She gains power via popularity. (Secrets) Media possesses a sliding scale of powers based on the combination of votes against her and thread mentions of her player's name. If she votes for herself, it does not add to her scale. The scale resets every period and is not cumulative. And quotes do not count! 0 mentions or votes = No power; 1-5 = insanify two players, 6-10 = role check; 11-15 = cast a posting curse on half of the alphabet (lower or upper); 16-20 = protection from all night powers, 21-25 = one-time lynch save; 26-39 = randomly redirect all night powers; 40+ = every single power previously listed simultaneously. She wins by surviving until the end of the game, but only if she has received more lynch votes against her than each of the other remaining players individually.

Bob[Twin Peaks] - Wow, Bob, Wow. On even nights, can possess someone. That person will join his team and they gain BTSC. Bob himself cannot kill, but his minions can, unless they are under suspicion. Bob's minions collectively can NK someone every night, unless they receive at least one vote. To win, Bob and his minions need to outnumber everyone else. Minions can still use their NP, and even have BTSC. If Bob is killed, only his minions remain.

Delbert Grady[The Shining] – Searches for Jack each night; if he finds him, they gain BTSC and Jack gets a nightly kill. As a butler, he lives to serve. (Secrets) When he does not find Jack, he can send a proposal to that player the subsequent day period via the host, offering them the use of a night kill. That player has the remainder of the day period to respond to the offer. If they take the offer for the night kill, they will send in a target for it that subsequent night, but in reality, Delbert will choose the real target, and Delbert's target will be killed. Every time Delbert successfully executes an "offer" kill, he gains one lynch stop. Must kill every other player to win (except Jack, if they team up).

A GAME OF CHAMPIONS

So what does this mean?

1. This game is for champions only. You increase your chances of being crowned a champion by playing like a champion.
2. Thus, non-participants will be dealt with accordingly, and there are no such things as 'replacements'.
3. Just because you're out doesn't mean it's over.
4. May the best player(s) win.

Prologue: We Are the Champions

The champions had gathered. It was time.

DharmaHelper was staring down Russtifinko. "Alright, arch nemesis, I'm back and ready to take you down for good!" DH taunted. AceofSpaces commented, "Yeah, you better watch it... he seems serious, Russ."

A Person, birdwithteeth11, agleaminranks, and DisgruntledPorcupine were discussing new music releases. "What do you mean the new Death Grips sucks??! Sure, it's definitely their worst, but by no means does it suck!"

juliets, bea, Kate, and S~V~S were talking about their favorite scenes from LOST. "LOST is overrated!" interjected thellama73. He began to engage them in discussion... or attempted to, but they walked away from him.

Lizzy and Vompatti were busy discussing... something. Vompatti exploded, then regenerated.

blindfaeth was the last to enter the room. The players were startled and overjoyed, giving him a fantastic welcome back.

"Welcome...!" sneered a mysterious voice. "All of you have earned your spots in this first ever intergalactic, multidimensional battle of many worlds and times... However!!!" The voice suddenly became more dramatic.

"Unlike all of your past quoteunquote mafia experiences that led you here, this one is real, not virtual. You lose your life, you lose it for good, not just within the game. I anxiously await to see which ones of you will make it out alive."

It started laughing maniacally.

The players were outraged. They started exclaiming expletives and statements of disbelief. Elohcin gripped her husband's hand tightly. Dom most expressively displayed his disgust. Boomslang seemed unconvinced. "There is no way this voice is serious. I mean, we defeated the real Mysterious Voice before... surely this is just an imposter. Why are you guys freaking out?"

The voice chuckled. "Not serious, you say? Well then... let me show you just how serious I am!!"

The ground began to shake violently. Suddenly there appeared out of thin air a man, standing, wearing sunglasses and sporting a healthy tan. He looked dazed and confused. "What... is going on here???" he asked. Some of the players noticed the screenplay in one of his hands. It was timmer! No sooner could anyone respond did a giant sphere of fire appear from nothingness, consume timmer's body as he screamed in pain, and then disappear. His charred ash remains tainted the ground in front of them.

"How do you like THAT for a sun tan?" The voice laughed manically. "That's what you get for going on vacation!!!!"

"Now... before the main festivities, let us reflect back on the road that led you here, shall we?"

No one had ever dared take on a challenge as grueling as they now faced. No one in their right mind would. They unknowingly volunteered their lives to defend their honor, but they could not be afraid. Which of them would be crowned the champion of champions? Now it was more than just a glorious title. It was a matter of life and death.

May the best man live.

It is now Day 0.

You have 48 hours to select which game you believe reflected your best performance of 2013.

Commentary detailing why you selected your option in addition to discussing all eligible options is encouraged.

In response to 2., you should be able to vote now. Had to tweak permissions just a bit due to a shiny, new subforum.

By the way, I'll probably be really quiet until Tuesday. I have an exam that day that I'm frantically revising for at the moment.

I wish I could say my best venture was in Bioshock, where as a Big Daddy, I wound up recruited by a civilian. Like a dumbass, I told my entire team this fact. Realizing my stupidity, I said that I had PMed the host and that I would rejoin the team in Point Prometheus. And then I helped wipe out nearly my entire team in one Night. And then I got recruited again. I think I would have made it to the end had I not been traveling and wound up having to vote early in a fucking McDonald's. I chose poorly and got lynched that day.

So my best performance was my first here on The Syndicate. In Avant 2 I was The Sinister Exaggerator. I increased my team's voting power and mimicked MP's writing style to have my falsehoods presented seamlessly in the Host posts.

In sum, I lied, lied, lied my way to victory.

But don't worry.

My best performance was in Super Mario. That's the first time I got strong pings and I kept on my suspicions throughout the game. It was also my first win, so it has that special significance as well.

I actually think up until the point you turned into a major bad guy (seriously, how evil do you have to be to betray the baddies?), Bioshock was probably my best game of 2013. If we counted games that partially took place in 2013, Shawshank is definitely the best I've played in a long time. Video Game Mafia on RM is probably my best of last year, but that's not a TS game so it doesn't count.

Of the two I won, Thomas I died early in and it was really Lizzy who got us that victory, and the Shining I think I didn't really do a lot to earn the win, I was just around and lucky. I did pretty well in Homestar as well I think, until I made a few mistakes and ended up being killed off when the baddies realised I was unlynchable. Sherlock I've tried to repress all memory of. I think I had a solid baddie game going in Bioshock though, and I always prefer to be evil. That might be where I put my vote.

Linki - Mongoose and all the other winning civs kicked ass in Mario. They definitely deserved to beat our team.

I think my best performance was in American Gods, where I successfully went after my own teammate all game without getting him lynched and pulled out all the manipulative stops to coax my team to victory. Plus thta was just a really, really fun game.

LOL, I never understood that, you went after your CIV teammate the whole game, THE ONLY CIV you had. If he got lynched, it would not reflect well on you. i always wondered why you chose reywas to suspect rather than a baddie recruit.

I am really excited for this game. (hey what happened to the bouncing smiley? :ponder: ) Ah well... :lorab:

I think it is funny that MP picked Minimalism Mafia as the host option on the poll b/c I was going to jokingly say that my performance was greatest in that game. Haha....I did basically nothing and won.

For realz....I have to say my best performance was in Masters of the Universe. Even though it was my first, I lasted the longest in that game. I had BTSC with two great players, Llama and Little Tiger, which was very helpful.
Banners are cool, but a pain to scroll through so...
I've won a lot of games. I've hosted some games. The end.

I agree that American Gods was the funnest for me. Llama recruited me on like Day 0 and mischief was made. However, it was not my best played game as I utterly failed at hiding my identity and teammate Lizzybean called me out on it. So then I decided to triple bluff and pretend to be another player doing a poor imitation of me. But I don't think even one of you bought it. It was a fun try though.

I always enjoyed BTS because you get to know the players past their game personas.

Went with Bioshock. I think that was going really well for me. After gaining a ton of suspicion early on because apparently people whose names begin with B are bad and it's wrong to have suspicions while under suspicion, I managed to get people to back off and avoided what I thought were several certain lynches (and my vote was worth nothing all game). I even almost got a couple of people lynched. Had Epi not been recruited away from us our team would definitely have wiped the floor with the civs and splicers.

I picked a game I lost rather than one I won. That's because I'm cool :p Also Bioshock broke the 4-0 winning streak I had going in 2013.

Seems like the kind of whacky idea he'd come up with doesn't it? I don't actually remember. I just looked into the Bioshock thread to check but apparently every word in 'B is for Baddie' is too common to search for.

I am thinking about my answer to the poll and will decide as well before the end of the period.

Regarding Minimalism, it made perfect sense as the non-player option because it ended so suddenly and ridiculously.

As to Shawshank (and WWE), in the end I decided to divide the games based on when the games end, rather than when they start. So at least you have Shawshank as a possibility in 2014, Bullz, assuming you win a game between now and then. :p

Also, I wanted to say I mean no offense or favortism as to whether any of you are or are not included in any of the host posts. Anyone who was not featured in this story I hope and plan to include in future posts!

Since it was the only time I won a non-minimalism mafia game, Sherlock had to be my best performance. I betrayed my partner and worked with Lizzy, Mongoose, and Llama instead. We found ourselves in a position that allowed us access to information on a majority of the players, my partner had entered into an alliance with bullz and DH and some others, so I used that position to spy on them the entire game. With a lot of strategizing and a fair amount of luck, we got to win on the terms Lizzy and I had hoped to before I was a part of her alliance by being the last ones alive (but we also got mongoose there too!), and we ended the game by not killing each other off and let inh decide who "won".

I picked bioshock, because it's the only game I played well in at all.
Recruiting epi, picking up *tons* of plasmid! and somehow dancing through the post-Ryan holocaust by turning my real knowledge into fake evidence that I was another character.. Ok, maybe there was a lot of luck involved too. :-)

Hi everyone! So glad to be back for a game :) I'll try to be as present as I can be. The good news is, the syndicate is not blocked at work! :lorab:

I'm going to say that my best performance definitely had to be Masters of the Universe. I'm not even sure if I won that game, but I remember kicking butt. I got BTSC with lots of civvies and kept winning the host contests - most people acknowledged I was a civvie and I survived quite a while.

I specifically remember that I actually didn't do so hot in two of my wins, SGT Pepper & Minecraft - both times, I trusted the wrong people and thats probably why they kept me around long enough to let me win.

Well, I see some new faces so nice to meet you - my name's BF!

I am so happy to see you back, BF! :)

Also, my best performance?
I am torn between American Gods and Avant Garde 2. I may have lost American Gods, but I certainly did better than I expected to. I think the way I had to think my kills was pretty good. I certainly tried my best, but the civvies did not allow me to win. :p Damn Cult!
However, I did win, Avant Garde 2. Epig, Timmer, and myself won after a long battle. It was so much fun working with them, and it was one of my favorite BTSC experiences I've had to date. I don't remember my power, but I know we plotted and brooded for eons. And the way we lynched Rey was pretty awesome. I would not have won without my team. Plus, BWT was such a great recruit, and there was Bea and CBK!

I'll go with Avant Garde 2. Just because of the BTSC plotting that happened.

You can trust me this time. :feb:
We had so much fun in AG2!!!

You and timmer were phenomenal. Remember the headache of hunting down Herman the Planet Smasher?

I had to check to see if birdwithteeth11 was in this game. He is. I would have felt bad otherwise. He was the sacrificial lamb that proved reywaS was The Mysterious Voice. bird took one for the team that game.

I've only won three games, 1 ended really early, 1 I was inactive for most of the game, and the last one was Super Meat Boy. So, if the baddies weren't pissing their pants before, they are now. I'm really proud of the game I played in SMB, I felt like I actually fucking contributed to my team's win, which is nice. In terms of hosting, I'm really proud of Twin Peaks. It was a very ambitious concept, but it went out (more or less) without a hitch. Sherlock had it's fair share of problems, but it was a great proof of concept for that certain type of game. Sherlock also has maybe my favorite moment in a game, when Lizzy wrote a list stating everyone's roles, and she was right on all of them. But, I'm guessing MP means in terms of playing, so I'll have to go with SMB.

I think my best performance was in Sherlock Mafia. Kicked so much ass, won the only riddles, plotted schemed and wormed my way close to the end. Yeah, Sherlock mafia was a good performance for me.

Ah the game started! Woohoo! This is a tricky poll for sure. I personally played my best game in Super Mario, but had the most fun in BTSC in Bioshock with Epi, Snow Dog, and Bullz. American Gods is up there as well, but my baddie teammate DF was recruited by Llama early on and I had no idea until I was recruited. I think I am going to go with Super Mario on this one.

Worst performance would be Thomas for sure where I learned how conniving Ms. Lizzy can be. 'First is the worst...'

Linki - Lizzy and the role list. Will never forget that moment after she PM'd to confirm my role. Never should have forced her to vote Vomps for funnsies. :fiesta:
