The Syndicate's Sister Sites

This is the thread where we showcase our "sister site" mafia communities. These are other communities of mafia/werewolf enthusiasts that have gone above and beyond to establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with our site via informal and formal crossover of site members. Such crossover has been essential to expanding both mafia and non-mafia site participation here at The Syndicate, and for this we are appreciative.

Canucks.com (CDC)
Spoiler: show
Canucks.com, referred to by its members as CDC (Canucks dot com), is the official fan forum of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. Mafia was introduced to CDC in late 2008, although for the first five years games were not run regularly, and were small and slow, with very little strategy beyond random accusations. It was simply a minor diversion for most.

In 2013, however, games began to grow larger, last longer, and feature more quality play from its regular players, and by 2016 CDC Mafia hit its peak, with its most players, craziest game set ups, and most memorable moments. Although in recent years game size and frequency has decreased again, there remains a core of regular players who play on, and the longest and most intense games have been played during this time.

Mafia on Canucks.com has usually been played with a couple less common variations. Most of our games are Nightless, with actions needing to be submitted before the end of the 24 hour voting phase, and then the new round begins immediately. Historically, private chat has been allowed, although this is becoming less common in recent years. Another tradition is that players who are voted out are allowed ‘last words’. A final feature is that rounds almost always end 10 or 11pm PST, since most members are based in Vancouver, Canada.

Because we’re a sports fandom site, players come and go frequently, and we don’t get many dedicated Mafia players coming to join us. But for a small, fringe community within the internet Mafia planetary system, we have punched above our weight, with three of our five representatives to the MU Championships (as of writing in 2020) advancing to the tournament’s finale.

HeroClix Realms
Spoiler: show
Started by Peers in 2006, the HCRealms Mafia community was mostly an offshoot of the Heroclix Fantasy League, a group of people playing the collectible superhero board game Heroclix online. It also recruited members from the Arena, a "who would win in a fight?" subforum revolving around mostly comic characters, as well as the social and news sections of the site.

Since most of the players are comic/superhero fans and board gamers, nerd culture themes are common and almost every game is a role madness hidden setup. Most dead players will autopsy regardless of how they die and infodumping is almost always allowed.

In its heyday, HCRealms boasted 35 players for most games. Between inactive players, 24 hour phases and hammer voting, certain trends creeped up. Day One lynches were rare and going no lynch until Day Four wasn't unheard of. "Pressure" trains, waiting for info gatherers and roleclaim evaluation became the normal way to find baddies. The "Freddy" (after Freddy Kruger) role, a vigilante that only targets nonposters, became common.

By 2015, the player base had shrunk to an average of 15 players per game. As players became fed up with getting lynched for being unable to convincingly claim and watching days stall out, games moved towards plurality voting (instead of hammer voting) and always having some way to falseclaim (safeclaims, open themes, etc). Realms players now do much more traditional scumhunting but still tend to have greater reliance on night powers than most communities.

RateYourMusic (RIP)
Spoiler: show
JaggedJimmyJay wrote:Mafia was introduced to rateyourmusic in July of 2011 under the name "Werewolf". The second game was played immediately upon the first's completion as "Mafia", and that's the name that stuck thereafter. Over the last five years members of the RYM Off Topic community have played one Mafia game at a time, and we're fast-approaching game #100. Approximately 120-140 people have taken part in at least one game on RYM, though the number of players who have taken part numerous times is considerably less. In recent months and perhaps years the Mafia pace has slowed down, but every time we expect it do die away it seems to find a new life somehow. Hopefully it continues that way.

Historically RYM Mafia has been inclined towards closed setups with a near-equal distribution of role madness to vanilla-heavy games (but we're always open to new concepts, and open setups have seen a recent resurgence). Nearly every game is themed in some way, and one of our trademarks is featuring roleplay as much as actual gameplay. After every block of ten games we hold an awards "ceremony" that we call the Maffies to recognize players for a variety of accomplishments. For the most part we're a bunch of goofballs, but there is certainly talent to be found in our ranks too. :dark:

UPDATE: RYM Mafia is now essentially defunct, as the original Off-Topic forum was discontinued. We leave this here anyway as a legacy to RYM's lasting presence on and influence over The Syndicate.
