i also don't think we should be so relaxed about roleclaiming. doing it helps the mafia narrow down who frodo is, and the role list also has additional civ roles "intended for mafia claims" so i don't think roleclaiming should even necessarily be a reason to trust someone.

and yeah, based on the wording in the OP, the mafia know which roles are not in the game and are thus available for them to claim (I've played one or two other games with this mechanic -- in Mass Effect I was on a baddie team and we were told which roles we could safeclaim)

He's expressing something that sounds like that that is far more likely to have been thought of by a scum player trying to think of their opportunities and he has implied that I was legitimately role claiming rather than fake claiming, realised it and then made that afterthought part of the post to counteract it, then he looked at his post and thought he'd done a good job cleaning it up but he hadn't unfortunately.

We have no way of knowing whether or not mafia members received specific civ claims, or if they'll just have to try and choose wisely. Only the mafia members know this. I don't like that you seem to firmly plant yourself on one side, especially when it could provoke civilians to reveal their roles.

it seems like a safe assumption that the mafia would be set up with specific roles to claim, why else would there be exactly 3 spares, and not like... 6 spares or even more spares? What would be the point of allowing role-claims and giving the mafia exactly one fake role each if they just have to guess what it is. The game would be solvable in a single day, that's not fun.

I pretty much assumed it was that way based on context but nutella pointing out that there has been historical precedent for that kind of thing made me more confident in my assumption.
